If you had to leave a gang, what would you do?

Pretty much if you were a gang banger and you wanted to leave the life what would you do? To be honest, I'm asking this because I'm in a similar situation. I'm trying to get out of a crew of people that are becoming increasingly self destructive and violent. They are doing alot of drugs, and one of them is becoming increasingly unstable and violent towards other people in the group. I told them straight out I want out, and yea... they did not take it well. So I'm looking for some advice.

i wish i could give you a straight up answer. i was in a similar situation but i got lucky and became a victim of circumstance. my people ended up beating people up for the hell of it including random homeless people. if i would have stayed i would either be in jail with them if they got caught or not trustin a lot of them cuz we have different views. but straight up if you said you want out they should respect your shit and not ask questions.

It's called Greyhound it to a better city/neighborhood. Some of you may remember I had gang problems which was why I left Chicago (an El Rukn/Black Stone is on probation for five years because of me), and I was asking any SRKers if they needed a roommate, cus I had no fucking place to go.

I had a little bit of money to pay rent but no car, and also had no family that I felt that I could stay with. A couple people on here offered to room with me, and I woulda just took the bus there.

Eventually my mom let me stay with her for a little while before her crazy ass kicked me out again. But really it was so fucking bad in Chicago gang-wise for me that I was not sleeping and had SERIOUS paranoia just walking down the street that I was a marked man...when it gets that bad, you can just take a greyhound to any major city and start fresh, it can't get worse, can it?

Really, there is probably no one on SRK that hates gangs and gang members more than me. I think it's a shame that gang activity and thuggery is considered the cool thing to do for any young male under 25, especially black ones. Why we are spending trillions on overseas terrorism that has killed...what,less than 4000 people in the United States whereas WAY more have been killed by internal terrorism (Gangs) I will never know.

What makes them want you in so bad? Is the shit about making money? If so do you bring in mad profits or something? It's kinda pointless to go through all that trouble to keep you in the "crew" if theres no good reason. They'll probably get over it.

I was kinda in a similar situation when I was about 15 -16 years old. It was all kid shit, I got in mad trouble and cut them off. I haven't been in any trouble since. I actually still chill with some of them now cause nobody is doing dumb shit anymore.

Anyway don't be scared to fight if they come to your house talking shit especially if you live with family. If shit gets too extreme for you though it's better to just bounce if you have a lot to lose. Sometimes theres only so much you can do if it's only you. I cant really say cause I have no idea what the dudes you chill with are like.

I think your best options have been mentioned already. If they are in fact a real black American gang and are as serious as you say they are, then there is really only a few things you can do. Making up bull shit excuses like someone mentioned is a bad idea, since all it's going to do is draw attention to your self. Being straight with people is always the best thing to do and since you've already done that, excuses aren't going to make any difference. Calling the police on organised gangs isn't a smart thing to do either, fair enough you might feel harrased by these guys now, but god knows how you're going to feel when they're actually after your ass with reason.

Personally, in my opinion, I'd say the best thing to do right now would be to buy your self a weapon and prepare to jump ship. Something like a knife, brass knuckle, hell even a gun... Yo, I don't think you understand. People grow up in different situations and are brought up in different areas. Some people get it lucky others don't. Some people go through that phase where they wanna be tough, be known. be respected, have a sense of brotherhood, etc. I know, cuz I went through that shit years ago. When there's nothing else better to do, some times you just wanna be down with the "cool" crowd. I used to be in the Bloods myself. After about 6 months or so, I just thought to myself, this was pretty lame, cuz my life wasn't going anywhere. Why smoke weed, hang around the same area, go jump kids, cuz they were wearing a different color, such as blue. I got out of it, thank goodness. I took it like a man. I got jumped in and I got jumped out. I didn't realize it then, but that was my shot at redemption. That was over 10 years ago and that was probably one of the best things that ever happened to me. It seems like this thread got out of control in my absense. I just wanted to get some sleep after all this. I mean parting ways with one friend is hard enough, I basically told a group of 6 or 7 people to fuck off. People I've known for 5 years. Listen, I didn't want to mislead any of yall, and to be honest I hope it is just "Teen Drama" and it just blows over. However, despite the fact they haven't shot people, despite the fact that they aren't "the crips", "the bloods", "hardcore skin heads", or the "baseball furies" or whatever, I felt, and still do feel, that they are a threat. They've beaten people down, they've stolen (alot), and taken drugs to the point of addiction (pretty much everyone in the crew except me and one other person in the crew).

I'm not trying to boost my e-rep or something similar. I may not live in a really ghetto neibhorhood, but in all fairness though I'm not exactly in the fucking OC having a slap fight with Luke Perry over some whore who's probably doing 5 other guys anyways. All I was looking for was advice, and I'm glad I got some. I really hope I didn't mislead you guys, it was never my intention.

Yea it was probably my bad for making the thread title like that. It's just that it was how I felt after that conversation. Even though I pretty much explained that I was not in a gang, just felt like it was a really similar situation, it was probably my bad for typing like that anyways. I apologize, again I know it's not good enough for some of you, but I just point to the fact that I may not have been in the right state of mind after actually going through with it and burning that many bridges at once. Even if they are assholes, you still feel that bond. Then again as the old saying goes "Hey pal, your excuses are your own." so I won't blame you guys for tearing me a new one. How many people just read the damn thread title and didn't read any of the posts made by jin. He made it terribly clear that these were friends who started acting this way after he was already friends with them for some time. So I can't fathom how people can say that he shouldn't have joined a gang in the first place, unless you didn't read his post.

It doesn't sound like the guys are serious or stupid enough (they mean essentially the same thing talking about gangs) to hunt you down. Of course owning a gun couldn't hurt, but I think most everyone who legally can, should own a gun. I'm betting that tx has castle law, which is a godsend in regards to home defense. The best thing that could happen is that 6 months from now you get a call from an old friend who was inspired by your leaving and decided to do something better with their life as well. The next best thing is you never hear from them again. Judging from what you wrote those would both be pretty good. Hope everything works out for you.

Nah these niggas are insane. They pretty much come to my house and they said they'll just keep coming until I "go with them". I pretty much avoided them for two weeks before this, yet they still messaged me talking about when is the next time I'm going to come over. I blocked them and they went on another IM handle and found out i blocked them. They confront me, I tell them straight out, and now we're at this point.

I actually thought about going out and getting a weapon because I don't really trust these guys to do the right thing and leave me the hell alone, I get the feeling that jumping me isn't below them. I'm thinking of giving them a chance, if they don't leave me alone call the po-lice, if they get violent then I'll buy a gun. I would tell them you know how would you feal if one day one of you guys wanted to leave, and no one would let you do you think that is fair? Jin, if it's looking like these guys are up to no good, possibly going downhill, then get out of there. Last place you need to be is with them if one or all of them does something dumb. You've done told them you're not gonna hang with them the way they're acting, they can't respect that, then they're not friends. At the least they may get over it after a while. You'll find new people to hang with, and if your paths cross theirs, you'll have some backup in case they're holding a grudge, but hopefully they won't.

Pretty much if you were a gang banger and you wanted to leave the life what would you do? To be honest, I'm asking this because I'm in a similar situation. I'm trying to get out of a crew of people that are becoming increasingly self destructive and violent. They are doing alot of drugs, and one of them is becoming increasingly unstable and violent towards other people in the group. I told them straight out I want out, and yea... they did not take it well. So I'm looking for some advice.

Start acting & dressing REALLY nerdy! And often suggest nerdy gang activities for the group to do, like have a Dungeons&Dragons or YuGiOh! Tournament.
