How did circumcision become a prevalent North American custom?

Hope this isnt too offensive, but its interesting to note that in America, Jewish people/Arabs are minorities, yet this procedure is done to a majority of newborns, even if they are not of the faiths listed above.

Is it done simply b/c docs wanna make more easy money?

-Misconceptions about it being "dirty" to leave uncut?

Or is it b/c everyone does it, why not us?

Penn and Teller did a "Bullshit" episode on Circumcision. It appears (just from the show, I don't know because I don't care that much about it) that there are all kinds of myths surrounding circumcision. They mostly concluded that it's done for cosmetic reasons rather than any factual reason now.

I find circumcision interesting in that there are a lot of christians in this country that claim to believe that "god made man in his own imagine", yet show they don't believe their own shit by saying he just happened to goof up in that department. Make absolutely no sense. I honestly believe most don't even believe the shit that claim to follow the faith, 99% just make up their own rules anyway.

As far as I know, there is nothing in the bible that states that circumcisions began to correct any sort of physical flaw. Jews are circumcised as a sign of a pact with God, not because our dicks weren't made right.
