View Full Version : So am I shooting myself in the foot with an 8-way stick?

I'm a newb at arcade sticks, don't hate me. =/

I heard 8-way sticks aren't the greatest to use. But rumors are rumors and I could just be a loser at stick, I never take that out of the equation. I assume mine is 8-way because it's an octogan shaped gate(lol?). For those of you going to Final Round or those who have been and have played on the arcade cabs there, WHAT is the difference between the 360 and an 8-way? Are there any tricks to the 8-way that allow quicker super arts, etc;?

How long does it take to adjust to the arcade stick? I find I'm in normal situations where on pad a super art is guaranteed but with the stick I'm repeatedly mashing out the motions and nothing happens.

What is your hand placement on the buttons? I use to be clueless and find myself staring down at the buttons to see where hand was and if I was over the right button. That's not so good in the middle of a match. Currently my index finger rests on the medium kick, middle finger on the med. punch and the ring finger on the high punch.

I use to hold a arcade stick like a caveman but Exodus showed me a crude drawing of a hand holding it like a pencil. Weird to me but guess it seems right. I suppose there is on wrong or right way to hold it but whichever way is the least hinderance.

And finally.....how long is this supposed to take to become awesome? I've been playing with this arcade stick since November and I'm still a little ghey boy: I get the shit rushed out of me and I find my brain can't keep up with what's happening on screen and what motions to input.

Are there those who just can never learn this because I'm starting to feel that way. MvC2, WOW! Getting use to that arcade version was as easy as falling out of a boat and hitting water. Not the same with 3S. In the heat of battle I find myself messing up everything, all the while looking over at my cosplay trenchcoat on the ground and saying "I'm definently not going to frx if I play like this.". YeahDood ordered a stick and he'll be feeling my pain soon enough. Advise me, SRK.

GOGOGOGOGO:rofl: Not likely buddy. We have an arcade with 3rd Strike over here again and after only playing 1 day I was picking back up on the stick pretty quickly. It shouldn't take that much more time for me to be back up to par on a stick. Sorry RPD... I can't share in your pain this time... dood.

Stop being a scrub. Tough it out.

I took at least 6 months to get down my motions right, and I couldn't do half the stuff I could do on a pad. Believe me, my little brother was kicking my ass.

I don't think you should be practicing online though. Try some offline in a while. It's better.

you have to tough it out

iih you get the american optical 360 like i have i learned that much quicker than i am with my jap 8 way stick.

the jap stick is more precise but i'm noticing with practice its much easier to pulloff moves. i'm still having trouble with suoers because i never did "circular" motions with my optical stick. i would slide it against the edges to do my supers with much ease

just stick with my former pad buddy...it will pay off. just think of the bigger picture. practice on cvs2 also...its helping me.

good luck!!!

8 way cabs are usually nice, difference from the square gate if that you must hit the diagonals.

Except for Deviljin01's stick. His is just trashy puny 8 way garbage.:arazz:

3 tips.

1 . SLOW DOWN, move inputs are very lenient in 3s as you know, hammer it in practice mode as slow as possible until you never fail. You'll find the speed will follow naturally.

2 . Hammer expert mode in any of the Street Fighter EX games, weird it may seem but its the thing that helped me the fastest, im still not sure why it did but it did.

3. Tough it out, frustration and stick proficiency WILL happen, it's unfortunate that frustration comes first though.

Good luck

fucking scrub. just grab the stick they way taht feels comfortable to you.. i for one i put it between my ring and middle finger and i don't move my arm at all just the wrist and i can do pretty much everything i want with ease.. all my friends grab the stick different ways and some move their arm all over the place.Besides just cuz someone does it one way doesn't mean that it's gonna work for you.shit there is people that grab it like it was the "stick" of a car.how they do the moves is beyond me but it works for them and just tough it out on the losses

Do me a favor and stick your HRAP in the garbage.I'm gonna have to go with Mod on this on DJ

for one throw your octagon gate in the trash and go square gate

No way man, TRIANGULAR GATE!!!!

Um...

Yeah.

I rest my first three fingers on the top three buttons at first, and then I just adjust them around based on what buttons I feel like pressing. Have you ever played 3s in an arcade or are you 100% s-pad experience up until this stick? If that's so, it's no surprise the stick is hard for you. Good luck man, I'm waiting for my stick to get built and I'll be in the same position. As for the stick, I hold it with two or three fingers on the left, and my thumb on the right.

Wanna have "we suck at stick" duels when I get mine? They can even be Q mirrors if you want. Or not, if you don't want.

Generally there are three categories of using a stick(+ variations):
1. covering having
http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/game/docs/20050408/ggl20.gif

2. pinching having
http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/game/docs/20050408/ggl21.gif

3. wine having

I´m using the third with stick between middle and ring finger (and 4-way gate). Just check out which is feeling more right.

I´m using a 4-way because:
-short ways
- clearly defined corners (imo a pro because i have problems with for example blocking low on 8-way...on a 4-way I always know "where I am" (stick position))
- got used to it
,but imo it is a bit easier to pull off supers or other motions with an 8-way.

Button use:
I would suggest you to use your pointing finger for lp lk, middle finger for mp mk and ring finger for fp rh. Throw, uoh and taunt with pointing + middle finger. I got used to it really fast because I dind´t had to think about where the buttons are and which finger to use to push them. Its just : which finger + up or down.

I doubt that it ´ll help, but gonna post it anyway :wonder:

Peace

Wow, good advice!

Mechanica: You are correct in your assumptions. DDR is the rage at my local arcades not fighting games.

It's a custom stick using Sanwa buttons and a Japanese balltop stick.

If you aren't going to compete at local arcades or tourney's then I would say fuck the stick and just stick with your pad, there's really no point in learning if you aren't gonna play anyone. But that's just my opinion. Also the worst shit you can do IMO is play online with it because your timing is gonna be so fucking bad offline and for some people it's extremely difficult to fix that problem and it will definitely cost you your fair share of matches. But if you really feel like you need to learn the stick then go for it.
