I'm not a major, I am a graduate.
I'm already about five years behind. Tech moves too fast.
I find it interesting, and a little ironic that Graphic Designers need these programs to practice their craft, but being as how we're a dime a dozen, we don't have the money to afford 'em, even when we're saving $1800 on 'em.
that's why friends with the cracks and burned discs are so much better.
as for advice on schools: Don't go to PTI

That's when you ask yourself, "why spend money on this when I can download these programs for free!"
Being a pirate has its good and bad points, lol.
Alot of this stuff don't seem worth it tho =/

Maybe when I'm really rich I'll buy Photoshop because I can afford it. And as for schools, is there really a *good* school to attend? It all seems the same to me. They teach you how to use the tools and commands in the programs, and your talent takes you as far as you can go.

nope, there's only about six programs I use in that Adobe Studio Bundle, the rest would languish, and go unused.
as for photoshop, it's good, but not worth paying money for.
just get a burnt copy of the latest version.

At least some years ago, you could get the programs from school computers easily....I'm not sure how much better the security is on that now, but back in the day I swiped photoshop 5 and illustrator(and other programs) just by saving it to removeable media(either a ZIP or a CDR, can't remember which)...I was surprised such a simple method worked.
Advice---this is applicable to most college students really---NETWORK network network. Kiss as much ass as possible, hooking up with the local art community, and professors. I think this applies even more to art and music majors, as once you get out, if you don't know anybody, then that's just it...GAME OVER for you, forever. I learned the hard way. An art degree with no real connections is truly worthless.

I'm a graphic design major, but like someone said, they're a dime a dozen, so I moved on to motion graphics work. Much more money there.

I don't know graphics design in particular, but it seems like in any field, the school just gets your foot in the door to get hired.

Sorry guys, I'm a fine arts major not a graphic design major, I only stumbled on the website and thought it might be a great resource for college students. Some of the items they sell are almost 80% off standard retail price.
Not all of the stuff they sell has to do with Graphics Design anyways. A 1gig USB drive for 10 bucks is a steal.
MOD: Not contesting you but why is Maya bad? I read that Maya was used to make character models for LOTR for example so I know it has many commercial applications.

already have the programs...for free! and all I can say is it don't matter where you go for graphic design...just work on your talent be it 3D modeling, photoshop and whatnot...it's all about your skill. and I jumped from Graphic design to Animation.
