You can't get BTM, only admins have it and it's only showed at events like Evo. It's SRK's best kept secret.

Any truth in this?
They showed it at either last year's Evo, or the year before it. So yes.

Actually at Evo2k5 they cancelled it, due to time constraints or something. We did get lots of lulz watching Alpha Generations in dub though.
"Ryu, can you fill my bucket?"
I'm not to sure at 2k6 though. I don't think they showed it.

At 2005 they showed it, the night before SFAG, 2006 is the year it was cancelled due to time constraints.
Hopefully itll be at this years evo if we have the time, so, buy your plane tickets people!

I saw it when they played it at South by Southwest about 5 years ago. I loved it! I really hope it makes it's way to DVD someday....somehow.
Yeah, they play it (or try to) at like every EVO, but it beats me as to why they haven't produced it.
All I know is I saw it at EVO2K5 and I liked it.

I've been waiting since 2000 to see it lol. Been here for a long time, seen countless Bang the Machine threads, always ends the same way sadly with nothing much happening and the thread just getting forgotten. In a time when arcades are dead it'd be nice to have it released so that the younger generation can see what it was like, and for the older guys to have something to remember.

i've never heard of this before, but if it's a documentary about the arcade scene then yeah it would be cool to see. I remember being 10 and going to the arcade to see 10+ people playing MvC2.

It's a documentry on the fighting game scene. It follows certain pro players and their interaction with the scene itself.

Seriously how hard is it just to press a bunch of copies and send it to Netflix? Independent producers do it all the time :(

Do you guys think it would be hella cool if some how Bang the Machine was put in with the EVO2k6 dvd's as a bonus feature if you buy the whole set of the 2k6 dvd's. Man they would sell alot of dvd's i think.

I saw it in Tucson back in 2001-2002(?) and also at Evo2k5. After they showed it at 2k5 there was a brief press conference where they stated they planned to bring it to UMD and DVD later that year but I guess that fell through.

I would pay 50+ for this documentary
I bet it will just be dangled in front of us SF players for years, shown at EVO and other EVO events, and never made available.
...until the fandom really dies, and they sell it to make $$.
I'm not trying to be a dick (and I don't really care to see it to be honest), but if current trends persist, I think this is what will come of BTM.

I've really been wanting to see BTM for some time now, but I can see why whoever owns the rights would be reluctant to release it, professionally at least. Apart from the hardcores here at SRK and maybe a few others, there just isn't a whole lot of demand for something like this.
The EVO DVD pack-in is a really good idea. Hell, even if it was sold as a stand-alone disc exclusively at SRK I'm sure it would do moderately well. In any case, it might be a better option than seeking out a standard distribution deal.
SuicidalGrandpa
02-13-2007, 11:04 AM
Why not release it? I mean, if you're making good money and giving back to fighting fans...what's the big deal?
I've been wanting to watch this ever since I saw the trailer on YouTube, but there's no way I'm driving all the way to EVO just to see it.
I would like to see it rereleased at SXSW if possible. But yeah an independent release would be the shit, maybe lease it to capcom to put with future fighting games? I know its never gonna happen but come on guys if Ed boon could do it with like 3 mediocre MK games then at least capcom could attempt to do it.

The documentary was pretty good, considering that it only represented a very small slice of the the gaming community, and definitely showed its biases. Tyram, go ask Spider-Dan about it, since the first 15 minutes of the documentary featured him. JSF productions even came out to TILT to film footage for the documentary. Luckily for me, I was there, and had an 80 win streak that day. Theres like 2 quick pan shots of it in the movie.
P.S.-
Spider-Dan had one of the greatest lines and looks on his face at the end of the movie........

is there any chance of BTM2?
R | C
02-13-2007, 02:59 PM
I saw it at Evo 2k5; it was awesome! Apoc's flip was actually my most memorable scene.
One of the makers of BTM was present at evo 2k5 (I can't remember who ... director? producer?) ... anyways, he made a brief speech before the film was shown. He said that they wanted to edit the film to add new/updated content such as new players - which I believe he was referring to Justin Wong (Wong wasn't covered in BTM ... or at least the one we saw at evo 2k5.). And that was the last that I heard about BTM.
I believe there's been several threads already after evo 2k5 on the possibility of BTM going to DVD (postings by fans, not the film makers) ... but they usually come to a dead end. I think someone even came up with a suggestion of having BTM on a pay bit torrent download basis ... nothing resulted though.
I'd totally pay up to $40 for it IF it ever gets released on dvd.

I saw it back in like 2000 or something, at a screening out here. Great film for people who want info on the oldschool tourney scene, and as a bonus they randomly say my name once!
Seriously, I almost cried.

Hi,
I'm doing an MA in Design & Digital Media at Coventry University (UK), and I'm looking to do some sort of video documentary about the UK fighting game scene as a module project.
I've heard about the Bang the Machine film documentary about the scene of the US players, but I've never seen it, nor I even heard that its available. I'd be really interested to find out if anyone has a copy on DVD, and I'd be willing to buy it off them if the price is good. It will be a valuable source of research for my work.
Thanks in advance.

i hate to break it to you, but this "Bang the Machine" thread has been done to death. honestly.
it currently is not in circulation, and only select members of the fighting game community (read: evo staff) have access to the source material.

Daigo Umehara shot to fame in 1998 after winning the official Capcom Street Fighter Alpha 3 national tournament in Japan. As the tournament champion, he then went on to face Alex Valle, the winner of the U.S. national tournament. This final showdown was held in San Francisco on November 8, 1998. The final was played as best out of three games, with each game consisting of up to five rounds. Daigo won the finals 2-1.
He was later seen again in an exhibition "rematch" in Japan. American players fought in four games (Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike and Marvel vs. Capcom 2) for the right to battle Japan's best players in those respective games. Daigo only entered the 3rd Strike exhibition, but defeated all of his opponents, ending each round with Ken's fierce Shoryuken.
These events were filmed for a documentary entitled Bang the Machine.
Yep... I reeeeeeally wanna see that video.

I would pay a lot of money for this film. I would never pirate it, by penalty of silverback gorilla assrape. I would be willing to sign to these terms in a notarized contract.
This documentary was made during what I think of as my golden age of gaming, so I have been interested in seeing it for years.

Would you rather have NO ONE see your film and make no money or have anyone who wants to access the film be able to see it and acclaim it and make no money? I'm not saying I want to pirate it, because I'd DEFINITLY purchase a copy if it was availabe, but come on man! It was finished in 02! I want to see that shit and so do a lot of other people. Anyone know a way to get ahold of anyone involved with the making of the project, yet?

QFT.
For those that don't know: BTM never got a proper commercial release. It was screened at a few specialist events, but has never been available to buy or to reproduce.
The only way to see it is for somebody with the footage to screen it for you, so you would need to either know the team who made the film, or be around if/when admins can screen it. They have said before that, if ever, this would only be at big community events like Evo or a foreign equivalent.
MrWizard
12-04-2007, 08:33 PM
We screen it every few years. We screened it in 2002, then 2005, possibly 2008. Only time will tell.

I was hearing rumors a year or two ago that some/all of the footage was lost in a fire, any credence to that?
EDIT: Damn you Mr.Wizard, too fast, lol. Well atleast that alleviates my fears that the footage was lost forever.
