Hello everyone,
I've recently bought a PS2 and I'm looking for a good SF game. I kinda lost track of the series because of my lack of a console. Anyway, I find it hard to find out what SF game is the best for me to buy. I'd like a 3d game with all the old characters in it such as ryu, ken, chunli, cammy, vega etc. Does such a game exist or not?
(I'm simply wondering if there's a SF game that resembles the last three MK games with old and new characters, with great backgrounds, a nice storyline and gameplay)
Thanks!
Best bet would be the SF anniversary collection which comes with SFIII: 3rd Strike and the Anniversary Edition of SFII (includes all the characters)

So you want a SF game that totally sucks?

Hm. PS2 3d game with EX characters... the closest thing would be EX3.
If you're looking for -good- SF games for the PS2, your best bets would be SF Anniversary Collection. SF Alpha Anthology, and Capcom Classics Collections (iirc, v1 for the older SF2's, and v2 for arcade-perfect ST). CvS2 as well. In terms of what you last described, it seems that SFAA might fit the bill.

Okay thanks so far. I did get Street Fighter Anniversary Collection and Street Fighter Alpha Anthology yesterday. I haven't played them yet because I had to go to school and school practise but according to you these are the games that fit my description best? What a coincidence:)
I was surfing down the internet and I came across other SF games that are supposed to be 3d. SF EX or something like that? But I saw that these games don't have the old characters, or am I wrong?
I can't help but feeling that the SF games haven't evolved as much as the MK series. Like I said, I lost track but now that I'm more or less back I find it much easier to get up-to-date with the MK series, with MK deadly alliance, MK deception, MK shaolin monks and now MK armageddon. What happened to all the characters from SF? Their storylines etc? And it's hard to find logical developments.

Well, it ain't like MK's story is hard to get, nor is it any good now. And SF, honestly isn't that hard to follow. At least, I don't have trouble.
Besides, is the story and all that stuff THAT important? Unless you're a fanfic writer that is.

honestly if its story and singleplayer game u want you cant go wrong with ANY street fighter game, id play alpha anthology first in that case as you have 4 games all with unique endings and bosses and whatnot right away. this will get boring once you beat all the games with all the characters and ull probably never play again.
if you REALLY wanna play street fighter your choices are much more limited, but the replay value is infinate :) pick up IMO third strike, cvs2, mvc2 or super turbo and hunt down your local competition. its this kinda play shoryuken.com is all about, asking about story lines and shit were covered years ago when theese games were new, so thats why people get hostile when you ask, its been asked a million times...and will probably be asked again next week by some other new person
I can't help but feeling that the SF games haven't evolved as much as the MK series.
Now that's a popular opinion!

I'm not really interested in helping someone who wants to play a SF game that plays like MK. Most people SF because it doesn't play like MK. Like polarity said, the EX games were in 3d...thats about as close as you're gonna get.
If your idea of evolving gameplay is broken mechanics and stupid gimmicks you are going to have a hard time here

You idiots piss me off so bad. Everytime someone new asks a question about Fighting games you go directly to being elitist asses and flaming someone for their ignorance. What's the point? He was just asking questions and expressing his opinions and you guys just start clowning him for not knowing anything. there was a time you fucks didn't know anything.
He asked for your opinion and you could have expressed it like an adult instead of an 8 year old trying to look "tight" in front of all your lunch room friends making fun of a new guy. You fucks are the reason no one want s to play fighting games anymore.

go to the bottom and look at the HUGE sf plot guide
sf had a 3d series known as the EX series and it had new and old characters but its not very good
there was supposed to be a 3d fighting compilation but it got scrapped and became the 2d fighter "capcom fighting jam/capcom fighting evolution"
and as for the not as developed as mortal kombat? umm capcom hasn't released a new street fighter since 2001 (cfj/cfe came out in 2004 but doesn't count) and mortal kombat is still coming out so yea.

If people stopped playing a certain kind of video game because of assholes that already play the game, they would eventually stop playing every game. Would you rather me bs about how third strike and alpha play like mka? If he's interested in more games like mk, then I suggest he try tekken or doa.

Uncalled for. You made it sound like we were giving him so much trouble. People answered his question and gave their honest opinion. It's people like you that cause things to get out of hand.

Agreed. There was no hostility in this thread. You just took it the wrong way.
So...to sum it up for the new guy:
SF Anniversary Collection is a favorite amongst the community because it has an Arcade-perfect version of SF3 Third Strike, which is the most refined and technically advanced SF game as of now. It is heavily (tournament) played in the USA, Japan and Europe.
SF Alpha Anthology is yet another good collection, again, simply due to it's arcade-perfect versions of Alpha, Alpha 2, Alpha 2 Gold and Alpha 3. I'd say the fanbase for the Alpha games are definitely up there with 3rd Strike. Right now, unfortunately, there's not much of a tourney scene anymore with the Alpha games, although that could change very soon.
Capcom Classics Collection Vol. 2 contains the arcade-perfect version of Super SF2 Turbo, a.k.a. "ST" or "Super Turbo" for short. This is a favorite amongst all old school players, however, to the eyes of a casual player ST looks just like Hyper SF 2 Anniversary Edition (included with the SF Anniversary Collection). There's differences, but if you're only a casual player you probably won't care.
Street Fighter EX3
3D version of Street Fighter with some new & old characters. Unfortunately the EX series was never well received by the community. They're only fun to mess around with, but almost no one takes them seriously as legit fighting games.

If you think 3rd Strike is simpler than MK, play Urien. Charge Partitioning>MK.

Like MK follows some sort of line of common sense? Hell, it seems every character that dies revives 2 games later since it seems that the "Netherworld" has some pretty fucked up custom regimes. :looney:

So, if I come and a topic and go YOU FUCKS! I think that's a pretty big generalization. I don't know how you assume someone is not talking about you. Why don't you trying being more specific next time.
