I kinda left it vague but I should've clarified for which games. But anyway I meant for any game people want ranbats in. The only game that has any resemblance to a scene in Seattle besides Marvel is 3S. Plus I was kinda poking fun at the whole "America copying ranbats" thing with the Chun Li/Sugooi piece. I would absolutely love to have a Marvel ranbat though. Doubt I could get in proper shape in 3S come Evo time.

Perhaps we could even teach the world a thing or two about how characters outside of Mag, Storm, Sent, Cable, Doom, Blackheart, and Ironman are played.

I can understand that, but at the sametime I think that punishes a lot of the players. Especially players who have a lot of points. I mean mixing it up for fun/variety sake is good but I think a lot of people are too serious about Marvel to have that be an option (assuming we have these that is). Also as I understand it, at ranbats people are only allowed to use one character/one team the whole time. That could be kinda nasty for Marvel considering the matchups in that game but it's something to discuss I suppose.

i agree with the general concensus... i think it would be fun and a good way to get prepped for evo, but i don't think having "themed" tournaments would be that much of a benefit. to keith, the vast majority of the japanese ranbats i've seen are players picking their best char. player's like yamazaki (twelve) and zangoef (alex) may be an exception to the rule, but they are extremely good with their chosen char and do make it deep in the ranbats, usually to get raped by a chun-li or yun player. as for marvel, i don't see how forcing players to pick what would essentially be low tier characters would benefit our evo prep or the scene overall.

i like the idea of ranbats, but i only think we should do them if we can get a bomb commentator. my nomination goes to frank. that guy makes light bulbs burning out seem funny.

Also, if you're up to it, then playing a low tier is FINE. If s'your character then s'your character. Playing against (statistcally) better characters well for you to evolve, change characters, or give up.

They're upper-tier chars, but Dudley isn't exactly at the top, nor is SA3 Makoto. Ken is really made great by the people who play him, IMO. He doesn't have half the advantages of SA2 makoto, chun, or genei-yun. Who I HATE playing, btw. Yun is just no fun. I've seen KO play Ibuki before, as well as Ryu. He beasted with both. :rofl:

Yknow, it wasn't until today at GW with massive rotations, that I realized how much of a good idea running these could be. We would be able to have A LOT of these (I refuse to type the word out cause I don't wanna laugh) before Evo if we were to have them at Zach's. So far it seems as if the interest only lies in having these for Marvel and Third Strike. Since so many people want them, when should we get these started? I think we should wait until the get2gether after tomorrow night's event (which I would imagine would take place March 2nd). At least that way we can iron out all the details in between time. But speaking of which, what should be the stipulations??

-5 dollar entry fee, prizes being given out like 70/20/10 or something like that.

-I know the 3S guys wouldn't mind being stuck with one character the whole tourney, but I'm not too sure how well the idea of sticking with one team would be for the Marvel crew. But then again a lot of us only use one team =/.

-I'm really ignorant about the point system. Like how much they give out for each place and all that. Maybe someone knows??

Counter characters is a HUGE deal in 3s. Ken is one of the best characters, but he's got a weak match up ratio to Chun-Li (I've been told that it's around 30/70 and Ken has to win round 1 because he's very limited once Chun-Li has meter). Chun-Li owns a majority of the field, but gets slaughtered by aerial characters (Yun, Akuma, etc.). At the higher levels of 3s play, it's easy to exploit match-ups. This is why Japanese tournaments force you to stick with one character for the length of the tournament. They want people to pick their overall best characters (or commit to a mete-game choice as was the case with the Japs showing Yun love at EVO) and tough it out, as opposed to just seeing both players alternating between 3 characters after every loss.

The reason you see special and theme tournaments alternating with regular format in Japanese ranbats is because most of the players there are familiar enough with all characters to play them competitively. This degree of aptitude no doubt comes from having to meta-game in their uber-competitive arcades just to keep from losing money. The special format ranbats are some of the most fun to watch, as you get to see just how deep some of the lesser known characters are in 3s.

However, now that I've thought about it, it really wouldn't work for Marvel (as I suggested previously in this thread).

I'd like to play ST, but not for money. That game is too short, and a touch random unless your name is Daigo or Cole. Ironically, those are the very reason that I prefer that game as opposed to XvSF in Zach's second cab. It's crazy random fun, and the games are short so it's easier to get a couple in while waiting in line for MvC2.

Also I did a bit of homework on other ranking battles around the country to see what their point system was and I found that most places go by this system.....

1st Place - 10 Points
2nd Place - 7 Points
3rd Place - 5 Points
4th Place - 3 Points
5th Place(s) - 1 point

From what I've read people basically pay money everytime they enter a ranking battle for however long they have them (I read 4 months?) and then the money given is out to the top placers 70/20/10 at the very end.

As far as 3s or ST goes, I think that people absolutely need to stick with a single character for the duration of a tournament. If nothing else, this is how most tournaments do it. Conforming to the standard will give participants better experience if the purpose of the ranbats is indeed to prepare for EVO.

For those who have never taken part (or read about) ranbats before, please know that sometimes the entry fee per event can be as low as one or two dollars. The cash pot at the end of a season is meant more as a pat on the back. The reason people participate is really just to get exposure to an environment. If the entry fee is minimal, it encourages more people to play. It would also defeat the purpose of payouts at events, since so little was put into it.

Another thing of note would be that many ranbats seasons run one (perhaps more) event a week. The benefit, again, is to provide players with practice. This also gives the weaker players the illusion that if they attend more events, that they'd have a chance of placing higher. Though the reality is that people who show up for just over half of the events and win end up taking it anyway.

One poker night has already transpired since discussion began on this topic. With another rapidly approaching, shouldn't we go ahead an iron out the details? I have no objections to the point system that Deezo laid out earlier in this thread. For those who missed it and are Cody-riffic, here it is again:

1st Place - 10 Points
2nd Place - 7 Points
3rd Place - 5 Points
4th Place - 3 Points
5th Place(s) - 1 point

Standard double elimination brackets, random (blindly assigned by an impartial human unless someone demands that we use tournament software) pairings for first round, and 70/20/10 split per event. Regardless of whether Deezo will be attending this Friday, I'll be there to run the first Marvel event with Zack's permission. As we are in a hurry to get things underway, perhaps the issue of whether top finishers will receive anything other than bragging rights should be settled as we go. The only issue left now is what should we set the entry fee at, and what time do we start? Some of you folks are uber competitive, so $5 should satiate your needs. I have no prayer of winning, and I just want to get practice in, so I'd vote for a more traditional ranbat style entry of one or two dollars. But, whatever people decide, it's cool. I posit this to you all, should we start before or after poker? And why do people start showing up so late? If we all just get there at 8 or 9PM, we could probably have it wrapped up before 11PM and get on with poker at the usual hour.

I recognize that there are 3S players in this area, but the sad truth is that there will be 12 to 20 Marvel players there on any given poker night and 3s is seldom fired up. We're in a rush to finalize the Marvel event for this week, but I promise to begin 3s if there is truly interest.

As we are allegedly prepping for EVO, we should probably play on console versions of the games. I can bring a Dreamcast this Friday so that we can have it running on 2 screens (3 if we need to utilize the arcade machine to expidite the process). Can anyone bring some MAS sticks? I think Zack only had 2 in working order. When we start 3s, I have a PS2 and Anniversary Edition. Someone else would probably have to bring an additional console and copy of the game to run any event of 16 or more. If we only have 8 for the 3s event, I guess 1 console would be plenty though.

We're gonna focus on the console versions of all games as those will be the versions used at EVO. While the DC version of Marvel is the closest thing to arcade perfect, it does seem to suffer slowdowns when multiple moving sprites are onscreen at the same time. It's still worlds better than all other home versions though.
