I'm what you could call a low-level player when it comes to fighting games. I'm predictable, I don't know what half the jargon here means, and I jump around entirely too much. I'd probably improve, but I don't have any competition around here. Mopping the floor with the "computer" is usually easy enough, though. Beating Alpha 3, Third Strike, CvS 2, not a problem.

...And then, there's Street Fighter 2. And I mean, every single version of it out there. I first noticed a problem 3 NYE's ago, when I decided to go to a co-worker's place to ring in the new year. He had a SNES set up, and Street Fighter 2 Turbo. I called first match, and he beat me. Then another guy beat me- and then his sister, as well. In the years since, I've had a few oppertunities to test out my game in singleplayer, most recently with SF Anniversary.

It's a God damn struggle for me to get past the first match. Things only get worse from there, and I'm even using Ken- with the purple gi!

So, I suppose this leaves me with two questions.

1. Will mastering SF2 help me to get a better grasp of the basics that every top-tier fighter needs?
2. Does anyone else just suck ass at SF2?

SF2 AI is well...special lol.

Seriously, I can win against people, but when it comes to the AI? Haha, it makes you look scrub.

Where do you currently live? Go to the regional/match making section to find competition in your area.

I live in Dover, New Hampshire. The closest arcades are both 45 minutes away or so, and only open during the summer. Thumbs-down.

The AI on SF2: AE is stupidly hard. In my version (the PAL version) I cannot beat arcade mode even on "easiest" mode unless I use several continues. In fact, the difficulty setting on that game doesn't seem to make any difference, it seems equally hard on all of them. I really don't like this as it spoils the 1-player aspect of the game.

Just pick a shoto and fire ball spam the cpu to death. But yeah the AI is pretty retarded in most versions of SF2. I'm used to it though cause I've been playing the AI since like 6th grade lol.

when playing any version of sf2:
1. must set difficulty to 8 stars....unless you're a girl or some creature
2. choose a desired char to finish the game
3. beat the game without losing a round

dont be a girl/creature.

good luck

No. SF2 is quite differently played than anything else.

Yeah, true. I'd still personally pick a better game to learn about those on. Tick throws are godly in SF2 because you can throw them when they still look like they're in block stun (and throws are just powerful), rushdown is cooler when you can dash of some sort, combos are fucking weird in sf2 and don't help you with combos for other games IMO, though poking yes. It's all about poking.

How far a drive until you get into MA?

You should check out Tokyo Game Action. Lots of comp there. And it's not very far from NH.

Don't listen to this moron, old school will give you better fundamentals than any of the newer gimmicky games. Learn old school first, it'll cover all the important bases. Combos are secondary, believe me.

"LOL- Dude you suck at fighting games."

"Yeah I know, I just said that. Jesus Christ."

"...Yeah, well you suck at fighting games [jive turkey, cracka, etc.]"

Otherwise...

I thought that might be the case, either way. I'm not going to be able to carry everything over, but I don't know squat about poking as I type this. I'll definitely have to look into Tokyo Game Action. Thanks for the tip!

She actually had a lot more experience with Street Fighter 2 than I've had. I only owned SSF2 for my Genesis, and it was overshadowed by MK3 at the time.

Anyway, who says girls can't excel at fighting games?

Although, there may be a few lookers out there that can hand out some asses in the 2D arena. I'm trying to teach my girl how to throw fireballs, currently. It's not going well, though.

i'd probably start with Street Fighter 2 Turbo: Hyper Fighting or Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo. the speed on SF2:WW can be tought to grow out of once you get used to it.

yep, the SF2 series should teach all the fundamentals pretty well. go to gamefaqs and print out a movelist, spend some time in training mode to get familiar with a character or two, etc. look for good pokes and combos you'd use to punish a missed shoryuken. then try to beat the CPU.. work your way up difficulty levels until you can beat 8 stars without losing a round. then try to do that with every character.. that should keep you busy til you get human comp.

and hit SRK and youtube for any questions. actually the alt.games.sf2 (i think that's it..) newsgroups had some solid info too. but really, human comp is your best bet.

1. Will mastering SF2 help me to get a better grasp of the basics that every top-tier fighter needs?
Yes, it will.
I'm better now because of SF2.
Personally, SF2 is my favorite game.
2. Does anyone else just suck ass at SF2?
I used to suck,I used to jump too often,I only wanted to do combos.
Now, 1 year ago,I noticed that playing tactically is actually more fun than do combos.
Now, I'm in the way of mastering.

My advice if you can't get any human competition irl is to get mame .64 and start playing on Kalleria. Just keep playing and learning from your mistakes and you should eventually get better.

Thanks for advice, those of you who have chosen to be helpful! If anyone's really hard up to see pictures of my girl, it would only take them 5 seconds of thought and effort to come to that end.

It's going to be hard to get out of the habit of jumping. It's an easy way to overwhelm scrubs and stupid AI. This is not the case with the SF2 AI, and I'm certain it won't be against real people. I gather some of you welcome hop-happy scrubs. I suppose I'll look into anti-airs while I'm at it, that reminds me.

1. Will mastering SF2 help me to get a better grasp of the basics that every top-tier fighter needs?

'Course. If you can't do a combo in SF 2: WW, which is the slowest SF there is (not including Street Fighter) then how can you even hope to do a combo in any other SF?
Practice jump in late fierce > standing/crouching fierce > hadouken. It'll cause knockdown and most likely dizzy. Do it again and that's one round.
Yeah, there's more to the game than that, but I'm with Duck Strong on this one.

oh, and try to beat the CPU without jumping :D

To add to this challenge, try to beat the CPU with only normals :D
Normals are important as hell to learn, don't overlook 'em.

terracotta
03-01-2007, 02:03 AM
mm, i dunno.. it's impossible to beat some characters without specials (e.g. Zangief vs Ryu). but yeah, definitely essential to learn the normals..

most of it is applicable in other SFs.
- the throw/special option select theoretically works in any game where throws are performed with f/b+P/K (so not Alpha 3 or SF3:3S).
- the piano input is standard fare in SF3:3S for linking (e.g. far MP xx Shippuu with Ken).
- anything like Fei's negative edge flame kick.. i haven't really seen. something like Honda's/T.Hawk's negative edged throws won't work on post-ST games since grapplers get whiffed throw animations.
- going through DPs.. i'm not sure.

That strip's new as of today, V. And EVERYBODY's really good at sf2 (course, most of us grew up woith it, playing it in arcades and on genesis and snes, then later on psx and Saturn)...'cept you, somehow. And girls. Guess you just started too late or something.

Vynce
03-03-2007, 02:17 PM
A few others have professed to be less-than-stellar at SF2; in this very thread. Didn't check dates on the strip- good timing on your part, then.

I did start late, as you say. I didn't play 2D fighting games much until the Dreamcast. And even then, I didn't play them all that often. I've only been playing regularly for a few months, and I had no interest in getting better until I started posting here. Not because I think I'll ever be much into competing, mind you. I just feel like I could be getting more out of these games.

SweetJohnnyV
03-04-2007, 03:01 AM
What on earth are people talking about here? Play the computer on 8 stars?! WTF :looney:

You may be able to improve your timing and execution by playing against the computer. But that's it. In general, playing agains the AI will rot your brain. It cheats. Hard. Things that work against it won't work against real people, and vice versa.

Maybe it's not common knowledge yet, but just recently they invented the internets. Besides being able to get free porn, which is nice, these intertubes can let you play games against other humans...even if they don't live in your house! It's really quite amazing.

But seriously, if you have an XBox360, pick up Hyper Fighting on Live Arcade and play against some real humans. If you don't have and/or can't get a 360, then consider picking up anniversary edition for the original XBox, or try the whole Kaillera thing out on the PC. There are plenty of ways to play against people these days from the comfort of your own home

terracotta
03-04-2007, 06:19 AM
hehe.. i think a lot of us are just quoting what we did before the internet. though even some places don't have much SF comp online or the infrastructure to support it (e.g. the United Arab Emirates).

sometimes i think if you're used to good SF comp and got deployed to Iraq for X months, you're better off not playing than trying to keep sharp with arcade mode. it's easy to pick up a lot of bad habits playing the AI.
