Here in Toronto it's all about hockey. 24/7 hockey. Anyone from canada who was watching the sports channels yeasterday should have seen the insanity that was ALL DAY TRADE DEADLINE TALK like it was a fucking election or a fucking NUKE went off downtown. lol not even the 9/11 coverage was that fucking detailed and over the top.

the #1 fluctuates here. back when the red wings were beasting it was about hockey. whenever the pistons are winning its basketball. and now its all about baseball since the tigers are winning recently. and football will never, ever be #1 here with the god-awful Lions - those perpetual losers.
You know how we do in NYC. Baseball is the number one sport. Until those chumps in the NBA and NFL start winning, they won't receive much recognition. I mean, basketball and football gets it's fair share of ratings, but they never win their respective championships. So, baseball it is. 26 championships speak for the Yankees.

In the city I live in, it's the San Jose Sharks (3 trades!). After that I guess it's the San Jose Sabercats.
In the general area, it (was) the San Francisco 49ers. Nowadays because of the ballpark and general downturn of performance by the Niners, it's more of the San Francisco Giants. On the east side of the area it's the Oakland Athletics, Raiders and Golden State Warriors.
College sports around here are rather secondary since there are so many pro teams. Cal and Stanford probably get the most attention. Santa Clara (Steve Nash's alma mater) gets some attention, but not as much as Cal or Stanford.

300% agree. Not too mention the Rock and Argos (well, maybe not the Argos).
I've always wondered what it would be like living out west, where the CFL is actually a big deal. Or, even more extreme, the Atlantic provinces, where you only have minor - league and University sports.

They didn't leave because they were unpopular, they left because of George Shinn, the asshole of an owner of the team. He wanted Charlotte taxpayers to pay for a new arena or else he would leave.
Shinn was also pretty much hated because of a rape scandal and the fact that he TRADED KOBE BRYANT FOR VLADE DIVAC simply because he did not want to pay what Kobe was asking. Let me stress: HE TRADED KOBE BRYANT...FOR...VLADE DIVAC.
The Bobcats aren't liked, because, well, they suck. Of course the Hornets really sucked in their early years but they were still massively popular even then, so it's not really much of an excuse.
Nowadays, we have the Panthers and memories of the Hornets; it doesn't mean much to get another NBA team, especially since the NBA is so crappy, boring, and full of overpaid punks now anyway. It isn't the same without guys like Bird, Magic, and Jordan.

It's football in this city. Our two high schools hate each other, their yearly meeting is the talk of the town. Plus our university won the Div II title a few years ago, and that got the place in a riot.
True fact, a few decades ago, when these high schools met. Days prior students from the county school would hang dead cats outside the city school's stadium (they're named the Wildcats) as intimidation.
Rod Driguez
03-01-2007, 12:07 AM
The Charlotte Hornets were well-loved by the city, at the very least. They even had a bit of national appeal back in the LJ/Zo days. I remember when they had a half-finished mural downtown with those two and Muggsy.... but Zo left before it was completed. Just shows the level of naivety the city had regarding "their" team back then, in the early days.
I think the Bobcats aren't getting that level of love out of the gate exactly because of the way the Hornets left town, and how Shinn handled things. I would imagine once burned twice shy, but I'm not in that area any longer and I don't know what the actual local vibe is towards them. Return of Shiki's assessment seems mostly accurate AFAIK, I'll take his word.
I am currently in the Raleigh-Durham area, where ACC basketball is king.

Milwaukee here. Football is first here. The packers pretty much own this state and the badgers are good too. Next i would say baseball then basketball.
Well, I live in Buffalo, so it should come to no surprise that the #1 sport here for the last 2 years has been:
Hockey. Everyone is talking about the Sabres. And everyone is sporting some kind of Buffalo Sabres gear, hideous as they are. But yet, the ugly new jerseys are selling better than any other teams in the league.
Working right across from the HSBC Arena (and I'm almost always either at work when it is on, or leaving during the tailgating), I get a constant view of Sabres-mania up-close-and-personal.
The traffic situation is annoying, but it is nice to see the people excited about something, even though I'm not that much into hockey.
But before Sabres-mania, Buffalo was always about:
NFL Football. The Buffalo Bills were the team in WNY. But because of this horrendous 7-year playoff drought, fan appreaciation is at its lowest I've seen in my life. Not to say that there arn't still tons of die-hard fans around. Just not as much as it was in the '90's.
After that, it drops off. You have fans of our Minor League Baseball Team: the Buffalo Bisons, and a respectable fanbase for our Lacross team: the Buffalo Bandits.
And college sports are pretty much ignored in Buffalo, even though UB's basketball team is pretty good.

Illegal transaction and murder was our sport since the crack epidemic.
kinda died down though.
but it was definatly at its strongest during the epidemic.
that was our sport, and money was the muscle to show for it.
alright let me stop telling the truth, and get on topic. yeah, NYC is full of baseball people. I never thought this was true due to where i live. like, in queens, everykid on my block knew how to play street b-ball and play at the courts like everyday.
same in brooklyn, and bronx..especialy the bronx.
I was surrounded by that shit, really. so yeah, i was kind of surprised when i found that out a while ago.

For the love of god, let one of our major sports teams win a championship before I die. Seriously, I think its been over 40 years now?

I agree to an extent: Roloson was in freakin' Beast Mode during the playoffs last season, but if the people in front of him can't score a goal, there's not much he can do, nor can the kid who had to sub for him (I'm bad with hockey names  )
Really, the Oilers sucked ass in general playing the Hurricanes. Watching some of those games was painful. Sure, thanks to an impressive home performance one game and Pisani's AMAZING overtime steal the game prior (haha at all the Hurricanes' fans watching that night expecting the cup), we came back to 3-3, but...
