EA's 'Skate' and skateboarding in general

I know there are a good number of lurkers on SRK that skateboard. So, I'm gonna ask what you think so far about the promo stuff for EA's new skateboarding game, 'Skate'.


I know EA gets a lot of shit for being a big corporation and whatnot, but if this game is any good, I'll certainly look at them in a totally new light, like I'm sure so many football and basketball fans do. EA is pushing this game without showing any real footage from the game. I was on XBL the other day, and these trailers popped up, but mainly they were just lifestyle/1 trick shoots with the skaters from the game. WHAT? I know, I wanna see the game.

If you like skateboarding, are you optimistic about this? do you think its a bunch of crap? I dunno, I'm kinda sick of the way tony hawk games portray skateboarding, and the only skating game I liked was the thrasher one.

Lemme know what you think. I may post reflections of your opinions on my blog if they are interesting.

It's good in general to see a new skating game hitting the market other than tony hawk. I blame him for the recent surge of little children hitting the skate parks with the over protective soccer moms yelling at everyone to not knock their child down. >_< MOVE!!!!!!

This game looks interesting. As stated before, we need something to liven the shit up, not just the same ol' tony hawk stuff all the time. Cool to see other skaters here, been ridin since 87' so I'm not into the big stuff anymore. Self preservation seems to kick in as you get older :( Do more tech stuff now. I always liked Thrasher more than Tony Hawk. I am sad there wasn't a sequel for it, like most of you. So I'm interested to see how this game turns out like most of you. I've only seen one very small clip of the game, which was very cool, but why is EA hiding the footage if it's any good? That's what worries me.

I remember that. I remember that it was supposed to be about skateboarding, but rollerblades got popular so EA changed it to rollerblading. It makes more sense though, skateboarding and holding on to cars isn't very conventional in regards to cross-country road trips.

Why? The game's control scheme doesn't coddle you by using simple directional presses and button combinations. You'll have to work a little harder for those rail slides.

The rest of the controller is used for further body control. With the Xbox 360 controller, X and A perform left leg and right leg pushes, respectively, to gain speed. Right and left triggers will make your skater grab the board, depressing both will lay you down on the board for a coffin slide. Control feels natural, comfortable and refreshing in light of the white-knuckle button jamming you may be used to with Tony Hawk. What about the other buttons? B will act as a modifier for your tricks, with Y cycling through currently available tasks and challenges.

I think it will work depending on how you hit the controls to perform a grind. Like if you input them in a smooth motion then the grind would last longer. Or they could just jack the balance meter from the Tony Hawk series.

Holy shit. This demo is the best thing to happen to my xbox 360- seriously. I can't even describe the awesomeness of this game. Everything from the little details to the big stuff. Like when you halfway ollie up a curb, and get in 'board' position, then kinda roll off, just like in real life.

the only thing I hate is how in the demo, the demo guy pushes *** footed and I hate seeing that. if you go switch he pushes regular. =/

Its this park we have here in jacksonville with this 70s style snake run, they still have slalom comps sometimes but the whole concrete part of the park is awesome for carving around.

RE: Ollies, I always practiced with my wheels in a sidewalk crack so the board didn't move. Trick that worked for me is learning that you really have to jump with both feet, and not just try to leverage yourself into the air. the snapping the tail and sliding your front foot forward is really only how you get the board to come with you.

Btw I've played the demo till it forcefully booted me twice now(once last night and once on my lunch break today) I'm stoked for it.

I was a big fan of the original THPS, and since then I agree the series has gotten a little ridiculous. I really like how tight the controls feel, and the more genuine feel to the gameplay.


Case in point: I spent 30 min. trying to perfect this one line. Haven't seen that in a skateboarding game before.

The new tony hawk demo was supposed to be up on live today, but It hasn't shown up yet. Possibly cause of the maintenance from earlier. Might still pop up later.

I don't really pay attention to where my front feet are actually, just that the board kind of comes up along the side of my foot enough for me to push it forward to level it out in the air. I mean don't get carried away with sliding it forward, know what I mean? I dunno, maybe some people learn better from sliding it forward. I just never thought of it that way.

He used to live by me and I used to go to all the kona contests that he was in. but I mean he is the only freestyle skater I know of that really gets any coverage, and that is just because he sort of adapted. sort of. And he is in the tony hawk game, so I guess they really can't mocap him. So I guess that is one big reason for the lack of casper slides.

I can't get skate.reel to work at all. I have this awesome video of me doing a nose bonk off a bald dude's head, and he spills his drink. It's uploaded, but I can't find it.

And for real, every real flip trick I can think of is in this game with the exception of like a pressure flip. if you look in the trick book, there are hundreds of variations you can do with them. Unless you are talking like backflips or something.

I agree with the Pro Skater 2 love. For me, my top 3 are Skate, Thrasher, and Pro Skater 2 in that order.

I found like 3 or four real life inspired spots last night. Downtown, I found a recreation of the Gonz gap/embarcadero type deal, And at the school I noticed those benches up on the embankments like Jeremy Klein did in the Hook-Ups video. Then there are those marble rib-shaped ramps that stick out of the ground, I forget where I have seen those but yeah, and those angled ledges that stick out from the ground from that building in Dallas where Josh Kalis used to skate.

see I felt the exact opposite, I thought the new control scheme was extremely well done, and I HATE HATE HATE the new THPS game. In the small amount of time that I was playing it, I never once felt like I pulled off something that was truly awesome, where-as I seem to do that in skate like every 5 min.

BTW finally played my full version last night. <3 that game long time.

hardflips are pretty easy for me, I haven't played it much, but I've been trying to do the rocket air. It's a double grab while you hold down on the right stick. That one is hard for me.

No no no, you pump when you go down the transition, and straighten up when you get to the flat. If you are doing it right, you'll see your character swing his momentum forward and his arms will shift forward. just move it into nuetral position when you are on the flat/upslope. You can also get speed by pressing up when going down a hill, basically any downward slope, press up on the left stick.

So far I find it far more entertaining than any tony hawk game, and its as deep as you want to take it, I mean its a huge map, with infinite lines for you to perfect. At least thats how i see it.

You can certainly do flat and lip tricks, with the exception of inverts/handplants/sad plants. You can't really do freestyle tricks, if that is what you mean. Like pogos or caspers/anti caspers. Lip tricks are really what I love about this game, they just happen to be really, really hard.

It basically took me three days straight to finally get a noseblunt slide in the pool. its crazy how the grinds even have special commands like that. Thanks for the heads up on the PS3 demo, its time for me to work on making a comparison list.

Well my city is pretty much a skater city. There's a handful of skate parks and I always see kids in parking lots messing around. If there's one thing I should be able to do, that's skate. I prefer the longboard and inline skates myself compared to a skateboard.

I just played the PS3 version of skate, or at least the demo. Its nuts, I have no idea why the PS3 versions of everything EA makes look like shit. The backgrounds are all smooth looking till you get really close, and then detail just POPS in at you. All the shit you see that isn't HUD is jaggy as hell. Not only that, but every time I skate the manual pads by the ditch, the game slows way the fuck down for like a second when I do ollies or tricks. WTF. and you can't save or edit replays.

I think I said this earlier, but I learned by putting my board in a crack in the sidewalk to keep it from moving. Don't put too much focus on your front foot. snap the tail, jump, and flatten the board out. It takes a lot of practice.

Also, when rolling, push with your back foot. It gives you better control, and you don't have to re-adjust your feet for ollies.

One thing you can do is just work on controlling your board over larger than average cracks when you roll over them, I kind of like to lift my nose and sort of bump off of them. but if you are going too fast and it doesn't bump, you are gonna eat sh!t.

I'm interested. I like skating around and trying to find new and interesting places to pull backflips. I don't know, it's just something I do while freeskating. I either look for some small ramp that'll let me do a backflip, or something real high that I can try and ollie over/gaps. Awesome game.

As a thought, I think you should spend more time checking out the Replay editor before you start your next movie's production. A lot of random flip tricks while pushing about coupled with the low tempo music (at the beginning) kind of killed my interest in it. The stuff was cool, but there's too much 'regular' camera angles of you just riding along before a trick. For me, unless the line is really long and complicated, I'd be more interested in almost a highlight-style editing with fast paced, more up tempo beats.

nah, I don't think the game cheats. I think some people have a hard time with the 'game of skate' portion of the game, where you have to beat the computer at performing tricks. Its easy to beat that though, once you know how to do 540s, because the computer can't ever do them. The computer is just programmed to randomly fuck up at skate, but its really hard to beat.

Is it just me, or does this game take like 500 years to load? I'm wondering if its my xbox, or Xbox live slowing my stuff down, or what. I've finished all the game accomplishments that aren't online, now stupid shit is taking me forever to finish, like I put a beard on my guy and it takes 2 years to show the change in the character editor. It wasn't like this at first. It used to load fast as hell.

ive played it for a little, just fucking around. and some things that are very possible to do (manual, ollie, manual) arent possible, but you can do a fucking nollie fullcab heel off of a 1 foot flatbar off of a nosegrind.

I got the 5 hour achievement just from playing the game, it just randomly popped up. So I don't think it matters what you are doing, maybe you just have to be in career mode freeskating around. I didn't even play it in the actual 'freeskate' mode.

Manuals are tough. With flip tricks, its easy to just memorize and flick the stick the right way, but manuals are all about practice practice practice. Its tough, especially on the PS3 version since the sticks are so loose. on the 360, I just move the stick into the position where my stick's tension tightens a little, I don't know how else to describe it.

The game doesn't differentiate between frontside and backside ollies. Grinds, yes. But frontside 540 ollie, jesus christ. It just says 540 ollie.

ive played it for a little, just fucking around. and some things that are very possible to do (manual, ollie, manual) arent possible, but you can do a fucking nollie fullcab heel off of a 1 foot flatbar off of a nosegrind.

Step your game up. Manual -> Ollie/Fliptrick -> Manual is easy once you can manual.

I still can't do a rocket air in this game, I always get a double grab.

It should show you how in the trick book menu. Just press the back button and go down to the book looking thing. I don't remember exactly because I don't really do that trick but I think you go into double grab and press down on the right stick. I mean technically that would make sense because a rocket is basically just a double grab with your feet on the tail. I think it is in the advanced grabs section.

So, I've done every trick in the trick book and have yet to receive the achievement for it. WTF!!

I dunno, its kinda buggy like that. I think sometimes if you just barely do a trick, it'll register in the book. It did the same for me, I didn't get the achievement till like 4 days after I'd completed the book, just skating around. I guess you could try repeating every trick. I love the hell out of this game, but some of the bugs really suck.

So I just picked this up for Xbox 360 and so far I'm loving it. I can skate around all day in Career Mode and not do any of the challenges, but I really want the X Games area to open up.

But anyway, I was wondering if anyone had tips on Right Stick movements - differentiating between similar motions like 360/Laser flips, Varials, Hardflips/Inward Heels. For the most part I can get either one of them on every try but I can't always tell you the one I'm going to get. =P

It all depends on your stance. If you are riding regular, the tricks are done one way, and switch they go the opposite way. It takes a little bit to get the hang of it.

I used to hate the vert skating too, but I've come to realize that it is my favorite part of the game, once you learn how to ride without pushing at the flatbottom and how to do lip tricks. I've been practicing that a lot, trying to get kickflip back lips like rune glifberg. its tough, but I like that its still challenging.

Yeah this one took me ages. I kept doing Shove-its or Varials instead. What pissed me off more was when I would do about three 360 flips in a row while skating back up to the start of the challenge. :annoy:

So I found a monster glitch... It allowed me to glitch me way up in the air, way above the Mega Ramp, as far as I like actually. The only problem is it takes extreme patience as you climb little by little. I uploaded the drop in to skate. Reel but that website doesn't like me right now so I can't get a hold of it. But yeah, it's rad. Basically, every time you spawn you drop from the air and land on the ground. If you keep spawning in the same spot over and over, you'll actually spawn the equivelant ammount higher each time. The only thing that complicates this is that out in the open, there is too many places where the computer can create a new spawn point, resetting whatever you've climbed. But up on the mega ramp, there is a spot which indeffinately fixes your spawn point unless you fall down into the skate park. Once on this point, it's just a matter of keeping on bailing untill you reach the desired height, like up into the sky for example and it even lets you drop in to the mega ramp! In order to land you have to use safe land (FS grab > Double Grab) just as you land, which slows you down a bit. but from that height it makes no different as if you actually hit the launch you can easilly clear the vert ramp at the other side. My next objective is to reach the top of the map...

Out in the open world though it's a lot more difficult bacause as soon as the computer sets a new spawn point, the climb is over. Basically, on the mega ramp you creep round the right hand barrier and set the skate board as if you were grinding on the edge (however it isn't programmed to grind). You start moving backwards so once you're against the wall, you tomb stone which causes you to bail. When you spawn you start moving in the opposite direction which is down the mega ramp, eventually the computer wont be able to spawn you anywhere but on the edge of the drop in down next to the net. Then all you've got to do is keep on bailing (christ air = insta bail)and you'll get higher and higher each time. For some reason it sometimes randomly spawns you to left which allows you to land on the ramp.

The result is something like this... Sorry it's in MOV...

man, i gotta get a 360 again. I'd like to get into this title seeing as when i tried the demo it felt like a chore to do a trick. I'm sure once you settle in it feels good though. No work for me until january 19th when i get my license back though so it'll be a bit before I nab another 360 :/

You deffinately should man, I really like this game. It's just so relaxing to play and yeah, at first the controls are a little tricky, but once you've got through some of the game it all falls in to place and makes perfect sense.
