I was never really into pc games except for maybe some UT04 n starcraft a few times at my friends place i was too young so i only liked the obscure ones like kings quest, oasis, you don't know jack, 7th guest all of which i loved but that was like around 10 yrs ago anyways i'mma bout to order a dell xps m1710 notebook and don't really know anything about pc games so any recommendations would be helpful (i prefer online 1rst n 3rd person shooters but am open to all genres.

So far i was thinking of getting fear since on my notebook it's portable but i been told it's better on 360 n ps3 so i dunno what to get it for, i never played halflife or wow or any rts game but what the hell they gotta b worth getting...right?, i been hearing alot about a game called company of heroes is it any good? i remember seeing 1 of my friends play some star wars game where u fight as a jedi online which looked like fun so does anyone know what game i'm talking bout? Do ppl still play point n click adventure games? or is that a dead genre?

I appreciate any help i get.

Half-Life 2 is, quite possibly, the greatest video game I have ever played. Buy it IMMEDIATELY.
F.E.A.R.
Quake 4
Call of Duty 3
Quake 3, UT2004, Battlefield 2 and CS(which comes with Half-Life 2) are the kings of online shooters.

If you're looking for a point-and-click adventure game get The Longest Journey. It might be hard to track down, but it's well worth it.

Jetpack
One Must Fall
Wing Commander (any)
Descent (any, 2 being the best)
Warlords 2
Ultrabots
Crusader (any)
System Shock (any - need to play those myself)

GOOD shit. The new stuff just doesn't measure up. It's kinda funny that almost everything on their is either Epic, Origin, or Apogee...

If you like the point-and-click genre, and enjoy Tim Schaffer's work, go for these:

MUST HAVES:

Full Auto
Grim Fandango
Sam and Max

FPS and 3PS:

Tribes 3 (Third-person)
Half-Life (Expansions include Blue Shift and Opposing Force, both of which are great)
Half-Life 2 and Episodes 1&2
CS Source (included in HL2)
XIII (fun comic book-style FPS)
Quake 4
Prey (MUST HAVE)
F.E.A.R. (MUST HAVE)

If you're into D&D, then go for Neverwinter Nights 2, as well :lovin:

If you like arcade games look for good ports on the pc.

House of the dead 3
Crazy taxi 3
Raiden 3(j)
Super bust a move
Guilty Gear x2
Virtua tennis
Outrun coast to coast (highest recommendation)

pc exclusives you must play half life 2

Some good non arcade console games winning eleven 9 and prince of persia two thrones. Resident evil 4 on pc is crap not even worth the download. My pc is basicly a dreamcast 2

Quake 3 is a must have. DL the CPMA mod and you're good to go. Sure there are other prettier FPS games but as far as a competitive FPS game goes, Q3 is perfection. Quake 4 is ok, it's been patched/moded enough to be playable but still nowhere as good as Q3.

Also another good FPS is CS1.6 but I hear valve is going to drop it to force people to switch to Source cause no one in their right mind would choose CS:source over CS1.6.

I'm not a big fan of other genres but Starcraft is also great, any long time running game that has withstood the rigors of competitive gaming are safe bets.

The star wars game you mentioned might be star wars galaxies, the MMO. Not really worth your time.

There is also jedi knight and jedi academy (the newest, though still a few years old). You run around like a 3rd person shooter but swing the sword using the mouse to have light saber fights. That might be what you saw too, and I really liked this game.

Any FPS games listed are awesome too, much better than console fps.

-Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 (or just get the First Decade and get every C&C game in existence). Try out the C&C 3 demo also.
-Starcraft
-Divine Divinity
-Unreal Tournament (I've only played the original, so the later ones might be better...)
-Duke Nukem 3D

I see Half-Life getting a lot of nods. I need to play both Half-Life games myself.

Quake3/CPMA is to hard for most average players. You cant get by with just reacting to the situation so it scares away alot of ppl. Also if you havent been playing it for a while your just ganna get run down till u learn how to time the powerups and strafe jump. If you do decide to play quake3 please take the time to learn how to play it instead of just jumping in because itll be a waste of your money.

Valve is NOT dropping 1.6 it gets played by 3x more ppl that source. But what is happening is #1. Intel is dropping all 1.6 sponsered teams in 08 for source teams. #2 DirectTV has a source league which offers salaries and HUGE PAYOUTS which most top 1.6 teams are trying for. The problem with this is if they play in DTV's league they are not allowed to compete in other lans/leagues ect. Thus leaving 1.6 with a whole shitload of mid-tier teams that no one cares about which will eventually kill 1.6 as a competitive game. As for it not being played publicly anymore, that will never happen.

When Severity comes out its ganna be that fire! John Carmack making a FPS just for comp play FTMFW

back on the zone days i was a top top player... then AoE 2 came out and shit was dumb if u didnt know the glitches... after that, shit was even more dumb

and CS 1.6 is CRACK.. GunMod ftw

theres a new game called Crysis coming out, looks sick as shit but you need a beast ass machine, check it out.

Quake3/CPMA is to hard for most average players.

I'm not suggesting he try and play in the next CPL soon as he installs. I think CPMA is great for a new player to start out with. I personally lived on map 17 instagib servers and I hated DM or tourny DM until CPMA came out.

One of the main reasons I love CPMA is the bots, if a new player were to try and pick up Q3 right now they wouldn't get very far because the default bots suck so they can't practice against them and second, Q3 has been out for so long that everybody that still plays is really good. The bots in CPMA allows a player to grow at their own pace and they don't have to fear joining PUGs and looking like a nub.

Also don't forget that there are a ton of CPMA demos. I think it helps a lot to watch top level Q3 players and see their tactics. I myself am a pretty good aimer and it wasn't until I saw demos that I realized map control is just as important, maybe even more, than aim. The demos also let players learn maps that are relavant to Q3 today. If someone is playing a regular version of Q3 the only maps they can really play are DM6, and DM17.

To add:
- Unreal Tournament 2004
- Company of Heroes
- Dawn of War: Dark Chronicle
- The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher's Bay (Director's Cut)
- Dark Messiah of Might & Magic
- Dungeon Keeper
- Wesnoth
- Within a Deep Forest
- N

The last 3 I listed are all freeware, and all are awesome.

Thx srk you always come through although alot of the suggestions that are for console i already have like oblivion i got for ps3 and riddick for xbox n the like so i would appreciate it in the future if u only suggest a console game if the pc version is better.

Anyways heres what i know i'm definitely copping thus far:

fear is definitely my first choice i loved the demo for 360
half life2
cs 1.6 do u buy this in stores or dl it online or is it a patch/mod?
company of heroes
grim fandango
and soon to be S.T.A.L.K.E.R. when it comes out

I would love to get quake3 arena, ut04, and halflife1 but since they're old are they stil worth getting? for example no one plays halo1 cuz halo2 is out so why get halflife1? or is it worth buying for the single player story mode? and ut04 and quake3 arena are multiplayer online games so do ppl still play them online? cuz if not theres no reason for me to cop them.

I played quake3 arena on ps2 and ut04 (titled unreal championship on xbox) a few years ago and absolutely hated both of them but not cuz of the gameplay itself i loved the fastpaced shooting but cuz they weren't online and i could pnly play the bots which was boring as hell.

I think i got enough to keep me busy for a while but are there any good puzzle game or any fast paced rts games? (preferably with a space or technology theme)

I read in game informer bout command n conquer 3 tiberium wars which looks tight as hell n it'l b portable if i get it for pc but would it play better on ps3/360? cuz the console and pc versions will b different.

seconded. Its a really good strategy game. But its TBS so anyone that likes fast paced action won't enjoy it. Its kinda like a long relaxed game of poker all night long... that can last weeks....

Im into medieval total war 2 right now and that game has so far been the best battle commanding game i've played. theres alot of thought u have to put into how ur going to use ur clavary for charging, how to position ur archers, use foot infantry/spears as blockades, flank enemy colum etc....

Warhammer40k:dawn of war/winterstorm/darkcrusade
Bf2/2142
HL2/ep1(is 2 out yet?)
Fear/Fear:extraction point (omg ep was tight)
Prey
PainKiller/painkiller:battle out of hell
UT/UT2k4
All the serious Sam games if you love arcadey shooters(Sam is one of the few games today that have shit loads of enemies on screen at once)
Oblivion is beautiful if you have the specs to run it, and its also fun if you like rpgs
Doom3/Doom3:resurrection of evil

And soon to be released on march 25(?) command and conquer 3. The demo of this is out and damn im fucking impressed by the way everything looks, the effects are fucking cool too. Check it out on all maxed out if you have the comp to do it.

If you are into FPS, I'd say Battlefield.

I've been playing BF for years now.. I prefer the old expansion of 1942, but there's BF2 and BF2142. I've just recently played 2142... it looks like a great game, but because I am so hooked on the old one, I'm having a hard time getting into the new swing of things.

Counterstrike is good I suppose. . . It's a little past it's prime (then again, so is 1942, by like 4 years heh), but I'm sure you'll find some fun in it.

And of course everyone is still recommending Starcraft, which is great and lots of fun online...even today.

Anyways if ppl still play ut04 i'll pick that up n it should tide me over until ut3 comes out although i'll most likely get that for 360 or ps3.

games currently out that i am definitely getting:
fear
company of heroes
halflife1+2
cs 1.6 (do i dl this from somewhere?)
ut04
quake3 arena
grim fandango
the longest journey
jedi knight: jedi academy (i'll get it if ppl still play it online)

future titles:

Sam & Max Episode 3 just recently came out, have yet to play it but if it's even half as fun as the others than it's a winner.

Serious Sam Second Encounter is one of the most pure fun FPS shooters out there, difficulty can be a bitch a lot of the times though.

If you like turn based strategy get Heroes of Might and Magic V, awesome game all the way. An expansion recently came out but I have yet to play it.

Nice it's good to know ppl still play jedi acdemy a few years ago i was watching my friend play it online and it doesn't get much better then being able to run around fighting with ur lightsaber and force powers..well that is until the force unleashed drops but thats late 07.

I'l have to look into gameflying these sam games everyone keeps posting about but first i gotta pickup games i listed in my last post i appreciate all the help i got.

cnc3 looks INSANE futuristic army battles in shiney new graphics with a fast paced gamplay? hell yeah! the senior producer said "it's really about how quickly you can get in and demolish your opponent" that's EXACTLY the kind of rts game i want to play although it's coming out for 360 as well and i dunno what to get it on cuz for my notebook it'll b portable but on the 360 i could get achievments and prolly more features.

Marathon: From Bungie before they got bought by MS the Marathon series is truly a classic. And im not quite sure but i think Marathon was the first game with dual weilding.

Alien VS Predator series: This game kicks serious ass. Single player is average... except the Marine section when you play against Aliens.... shit is suspense like no other. The multiplayer is nice as hell though. Although you have to take out the razor discs of the Predators to make it at least somewhat even.

Deus Ex: Dont play the watered down xbox sequel. Play the original that was one of the best games on the PC. I hate how they fucked up the sequel because they wanted to put in on a console. Fuckin xbox.

System Shock series: Another great FPS. Had tons and tons of style and atmosphere. Bioshock is/will the spiritual successor to SS.

Syndicate and Syndicate wars: A challenging but fun game where you control 4 dudes and try to kill a bunch of people. You can put money into researching new weapons and gadgets and equip them onto your 4 guys as you see fit. Challenging because controlling 4 guys at once without the usual RTS commands will surely give you some trouble. But once you get the hang of it still fun.

Homeworld 1&2: Huge ass RTS game. Beautiful back then and still is. Kinda like TA but in space.

Fallout 1&2: Cant believe nobody has mentioned this yet. One of the greatest RPGs everrrrr. The somewhat non-linear style with the post-apocalyptic style is a great match.

Day of Defeat: a half-life mod turned into commercial game like CS. Set in WW2. on an another note i dont know why everybody loves CS. I hate that game.

Natural Selection: Another half-life mod but one of the most unique. there are two teams the marines and the aliens. The marines are your usual fighters but there is one player who plays as the commander. The commander plays the game through a topdown view just like an RTS. He can give out commands, build structures for weapon upgrades and resources, and can equip players on the fly with various equipment. The aliens has you playing as an alien. Some are quick and climbing on walls and biting, or some fly with poisonous darts, or you can become a raging bull sort of thing. There is also a worker class which lets your other teammates evolve into better things, or get better abilities such as regeneration, more energy, invisibility, etc.

America's Army: Most realistic shooter IMO. Not as fast paced as most other FPSs not recommended for people who dont like to plan or be patient. My favorite FPS. Oh and its FREEEEE!

Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Another great FREE FPS. Very high paced. Choose from various classes which have different abilities and weapons. Great for the spaz gamer.

Diablo 2: Great RPG. Im running out of things to say for the games.

No one live forever 1&2: Well these games are the only ones i havnt played yet from the ones ive listed but i hope to play them soon. I have heard great things about this game.

Supreme Commander: Another game i desperatly want to play.... Looks like it could be the best RTS for me.

Thats all i can think up right now.....

Oh i tried to list games that not everybody will spam to death. like half-life or some shit.

I'm a fan of RTS games, so all I can do is recommend those. So you've allready heard and played Starcraft. Now try out Warcraft 3, command and conquer first decade, Dawn of War 40K and all of it's expansions. Total Anihillation (1997) might be to old for you, but beleive it or not, it's one of the better RTS games in terms of originality and depth. Supreme commander is the new kid on the block. Unless you have a really fast PC and the latest graphics card, I wouldn't recommend it. I thought my PC was the shit and I could barely run the demo.

It's a remake of Total Anihillation, so you can expect the same gameplay as in the original with a lot more improvements. Dark Regin is another good RTS from the late 90's (98' to be exact) and was years ahead of the game back then. Ideas from this game are finally being implemented in todays RTS games. I personally don't think that Starcraft is the best RTS in terms of depth and overall scope. The reason that its still a fan favorite and played in tournaments is because it's been balanced out compared to other RTS games. That however is still debatable by some people though. But all RTS games suffer from an overpowered side and a side that is almost unplayable.

Then someone comes a along and turn a weakness into a strenght. Then everyone jumps on the band wagon and now all of the newbs that were winning with the same old strat from the stronger faction cries for the nerf bat on the message boards. That faction who had a leg up gets nerfed into oblivian and then the vicious cycle starts and the whole game ends up being a mess. Here are some examples with a few current games. No, you know what, I'm not going to post all of that since that's not what people are here to read about. If you want to here more on it, just IM me.

Freelancer is nice if you like space sim games like Tie-Fighter or Descent Freespace. There's also a pretty shallow trading aspec to it in the same vein as Elite.

Also, I don't think anyone mentionned the Heroes of Might and Magic series. Those are great if you like turn based strategy games.

Well I heard that the early base defenses in Supreme Commander are actually quite useful. And later they have some nice artillery stuff too.

But I dont think theres a turret/bunker more overpowered than the tesla coils from C&C Red Alert. Building a line of them to the enemies base was crazy fun.

BUTTTTT if you REALLY love turrets/bunkers that much theres a Warcraft 3 multiplayer mod thing where you construct only turrets and try to stop hoards of enemies.

EDIT: Is freespace really free? What are the comp requirements?

Medieval II: Total War

Nothing can compare to the thick barrage of arrows flying into the other army. Then light them up with fire arrows.

Armed Assault just came out. Looks like a very fun FPS game. I definitely need a new PC system to play this sucka; it's the only thing that is holding me back.

I'd recommend BF2 but after playing shitless hours after hours, I finally realize it's a nooby arcadish FPS game. Still fun nonetheless.

Well I heard that the early base defenses in Supreme Commander are actually quite useful. And later they have some nice artillery stuff too.I was actually looking into the game but disregarded it since my PC isn't that powerful. I checked out the system requirements and I don't even meet the minimum. >.<

But I dont think theres a turret/bunker more overpowered than the tesla coils from C&C Red Alert. Building a line of them to the enemies base was crazy fun.I remember that, LOL, but I thought that there would have been newer games with such cheesy turrets.

BUTTTTT if you REALLY love turrets/bunkers that much theres a Warcraft 3 multiplayer mod thing where you construct only turrets and try to stop hoards of enemies.I think I recall something similar in SC, but I played them to death (Sunken D, Air D, Pylon D, etc.). I guess that getting WC3 would be just as fun while still refreshing. Thanks for the suggestion.

EDIT: Is freespace really free? What are the comp requirements?I don't know if it's freeware or something now, but it was an actual game that hit store shelves. I think the requirements are pretty low considering that it came out in the late 90's (IIRC) and that I can run it on my PC. BTW there's Descent Freespace, Freespace Expansion, Freespace 2, and Freelancer (not related to Descent and is more of an action game than a simulation game). I think that they call it Freespace because the previous Descent games were all in-doors and they don't want to confuse people.
