Well for people who don't know the site, it's a gaming news feed site. A pretty big one at that. They ran a story about a possible new feature that might be coming to the PS3. Sony then decided to blackball them pretty badly. I give Kotaku a lot of respect for going along with the story and being pretty respectful about it. Just another reason why my thoughts on Sony is slowly going downhill, not only does this fuel the rumor that Kotaku originally posted, Kotaku is a news site that caters to the gaming community much more than other sites do. Just more bad press for them. Bad move Sony...bad move.

Here's the link to Kotaku talking about their blackball.

Here's the link to the story that caused all the issues.

Me thinks this isn't actually about the rumor at all. Rather, it's more likely the mountain of negative press bloggers have been piling on Sony. Is some of it justified? Yes, but when I go to Kotaku and read something along the lines of:

I Sneezed; Sony didn't say "Bless You" - Therefore, Sony worst company in the Universe

I don't think the Kotaku blog are real journalists at that point.

I remember reading a report on Kotaku that was something along the lines of:

Virtual Fighter 5 sitting on shelves

then 2 days later, we find out it's in the top 3 selling games in Japan...

Yeah....fair and balanced, just like a certain "newscorp".

Joystiq is just as guilty of this too, and they better watch thier backs.

i like how the guy at kotaku tries to portray himself as a martyr.
especially with the :

"my job only is to inform the readers of news as quickly and accurately as I can"

kotaku is for gays.

Wow, lots of hate for Kotaku haha. Well I agree they aren't true New type site. Though I never like it when I see stuff like this. If Sony did this because Kotaku did one of those "This is why Sony Sucks" things and Sony did this...fair...I'd laugh even. Though when I see it happen when they are just reporting what they heard, made sure people knew it was rumor, I just see someone trying to filter what I can see, hear and read. I think that sucks overall. Sony's reaction to this was a bit ridiculous in my opinion. Kotaku this time put the reader over business and they get blackballed. I see bigger things that just Kotaku with this.

I don't know...be it games, politics or anything I hate to see restrictions on this. Though Sony has the right to do those things no doubt, I just think they played their hand for the wrong reasons.

blackballed is better than blueballed, imo.

 Very true...

Though maybe this qualifies as Kotaku getting teabagged?

Lol. I got blueballed by Sony! They showed me a video of killzone, but never let me play with it!

Seriously though, that PS3 'Home' thing sounds retarded awesome.

yeah i'd say teabagging.

honestly, kotaku's staff and sony's pr department should have a battle royale.

everybody's happy.

I have no problem with Kotaku myself. Decent blogging site with solid info, and constant, all-day updates.

No hate here. I'm sorry it came to this over some rumors.

I don't really like Sony and the way they walk around all day like Ps3 is the shit and ignore the numbers

BUT

From a strictly business standpoint and can kind of understand why Sony wouldn't want something like this to be leaked to the public.

I didn't know that typing up unconfirmed rumors counts as being a "news source" now.

From what I can tell, these idiots brought this completely on themselves.

Sony doesn't have the better argument often these days, but they do here.

This sentence just shows you are looking at this too narrowmindedly. You aren't considering the business aspect of this. Businesses, particularly ones with competition, don't always like their new ideas being leaked before they intend to make them known. This isn't some like government coverup shit, its standard business protocol.

I know hating on Sony is the new "in" thing these days, but come on. It's not like Nintendo hasn't done just as much fuckery in the past and behind the scenes.

In so doing, Sony asked us not to publish the story, first nicely, then not so much. Sony Computer Entertainment of American representatives reminded us that the story was a rumor and then went on to say that publishing it could harm our professional relationship with them.

When I responded that we were going forward with the story and that sometimes news doesn't come from official sources I was told that if we published we would likely be blackballed by the company.
Kotaku got three polite warnings already, and they just decided to be a dick about it. Fuck 'em.

That kind of shit of so naive man. People pull the same crap with microsoft vs apple. They hear a few bad things about one company, and assume their competitors are a bunch of fucking saints.

SRK you have surprised me. I expected this thread to be about how big evil Sony tried to push around the brave journalists at Kotaku.

You guys are right, Sony did nothing wrong here. Kotaku enjoys special access from Sony - they get invited to special events, they get special hardware. Sony does not have to provide that stuff, and it is perfectly within their rights to revoke that stuff whenever they choose.

Kotaku printed a rumor, not news. And in so doing helped steal some of Sony's PR thunder. There is no "journalistic integrity" here, this wasn't some important thing the public just needed to know like the PS3 catches your run on fire.

From the way It sounds, sony did nothing wrong, and Kotaku behaved like some ungrateful pricks and slow learners too.

The Sony representative guy told it straight up: that they would ban them from attending special sony stuff if they posted the rumor. Kotaku did it any way and now they are whining about being banned?

Also the Kotaku guy sounds a bit stuck in his own world, greatly overestimating his sites worth to gaming. I myself have never once heard of Kotaku up until now, and won't lose any sleep over them not being allowed to screw with Sony and get away with it.

So we move from product based to service based, starting with packaged product augmented by downloadble content. We'll enhance this with social networks, the MySpace experience, this will be a key part of the PlayStation3 going forward. What brings it to life is the voice chat, the text chat, the video, the social features we're building in for the future.

Am I the only one who doesn't care about this stuff? I'd rather they focus on making good games.

The only difference is, when Nintendo's ship sank in the mid-90s, there wasn't this deluge of negative press.. probably because there was greater media control back then, with magazines in the back pockets of all the major game companies.. but Nintendo still got off easier than Sony in terms of public image.

I'm surprised this thread didn't turn into another 'fuck Sony' tirade. Sony sucks more often than not, but I am tired of blog sites (like this one and Joystiq, among others) spreading their transparent fanboy agenda at every opportunity. If it was just bloggers shitting on every company out there that makes a slip (like what Fatbabies used to do.. anybody remember them?), I would be more entertained and supportive of their unprofessional approach at journalism.. but it's been ALL Sony, for at least TWO YEARS now.. and it's just annoying, hypocritical BS.. most likely nerd revenge because the big bad Sony usurped Nintendo's domination or killed Sega or whatever.

Sites like Kotaku need to either grow up, or tie themselves back to the tether pole and STFU. Fucking retards.

PS. What colorblind motherfucker designed that site.

the bitches at kotaku even published dude's email. on some, 'show my friends the breakup letter' shit. on what planet does that count as responsible journalism?
