View Full Version : How bad is your vision without glasses/contact/surgery? It can't be worse than...

The Invincible Swordsman

Mine. Just came from the eye doctor and I asked him what my vision was without contacts.......

The Invincible Swordsman - So what's my vision at? I can't remember what it was last time. I think it was 20/140 or something like that.

Doctor - O_O

TIS - What?

Doctor - Let's put it this way..... the worst I've ever seen was 20/400. Yours is just like that except you can see well in close.

TIS - 20/400?

Doctor - Pretty much.

I did eat carrots. And peas. And all my veggies. I think it was all the TV I used to watch..... when I'd sit 4 inches from the screen.

I wear contacts.

I can read the letter E on the chart. I know from memorization that the next few letters are F, P, T, O and Z. I don't know if I can actually read the third row and down.

Anything several inches from my face is blurry.

Anyone here that's met me knows I wear glasses, and the above statement is how bad it is for me without them. lol

If I wear glasses often, which I have been doing for the past 2.5 years or so, my vision is a little blurry without them.

I've always had great vision, but wearing glasses makes it worse. I got the glasses so I could do a 10 hour drive without stopping (and for reading for extended periods) because if I stare at something for more than a few hours, my vision goes blurry.

For some reason afterwards, I continued to wear them. Now, if I don't put them on my vision isn't as good. It's. . .weird.

If I go a few days without depending on them, my vision will be fine again.

The last time the doctor told me what my vision was in terms of 20/x was when I was a teenager (I'm 23 now), and back then it was already 20/400, and I've gotten a couple new prescriptions since then. 20/450, 20/500? My guess is somewhere along those lines.

Basically, without glasses or contacts I can only see by contrast. If someone puts giant white letters on a black wall 10 feet from me, I might be able to make them out, but if someone asks how many fingers he's holding up but puts his other hand behind that hand so I can't find a color contrast, then even if it's a couple feet away I won't be able to make it out.

Man, I could NEVER understand how people could not need corrective lenses. My dad is 62 and barely ever wears his glasses. I think it's strange that people maintain perfect vision for so long o_O

I didn't start wearing glasses til I was in 10th grade. I hated wearing them and never wore them except for when I drove at night, but now I have contacts and wear them every day and feel awkward as all hell without them. My vision is only -1.75 and -2.00 in each eye, but that's a whole... number down from what they were a year or two ago. It scares me that it's only gonna get worse :(

Veib
03-15-2007, 04:40 PM
My right eye is -4.50 and left eye is -5.00. I just checked the numbers from this card I got when I got my glasses, and apparently these are six years old now. And considering I can still see, I guess it's pretty safe to assume my vision has stopped getting worse. Yay.

what the hell do those numbers mean?

I have no idea how the 20/140 stuff works, but for the +/- numbers:

- = nearsight, can't see far well, concave lens
+ = farsight, can't see near well, convex lens
Number = thickness of the lens. Bigger number = thicker lens = worse eyesight.

20/xx is based on a 20 foot measurement. i.e., 20/40 means at 20 feet you can see what a person with normal vision can see at 40 feet.

If I'm in front of the pc, I can't read the text on the screen, my eyes have to be within 8 inches of the monitor to read anything of it. (normal size text btw)

I don't get the hate against glasses, I've been wearing mine since I was 11 and I couldn't imagine life without them. Sure I broke a pair or two while playing bball in high school, and sure it further proved the stereotype of geeky asian kids with glasses, but the pair I have now (rayban frames ftw!) is freakin awesome. And you know how people buy frames with no prescription lenses so that they can look cool and sophisticated? Yeah fuck you.

I have bad eyesight, I just never wear my glasses for some reason. I know I should, but I'm always either forgetting them or just don't feel like wearing them. Its funny because in school I'm all like:

*Hallways walking to class*
Person: Hey Dawain!
Me: Uhm, hi?(Who is this person?)

*In class*
Me: *Gets up and gets 5 inches close to the board to copy down the work*
Teacher: Dawain thats not even funny

Hey, thats just how I am. <_<

Study: Playing Video Games Improves Eyesight

LiveScience.com
Thu Mar 15, 5:20 PM ET

Playing "Gears of War," "Lost Planet," "Halo" and other action video games that involve firing guns can improve your eyesight, new research claims.

Sedate games like "Tetris" don't work.

People who started out as non-gamers and then received 30 hours of training on first-person action video games showed a substantial increase in their ability to see objects accurately in a cluttered space, compared to non-gamers given the same test, said Daphne Bevelier of the University of Rochester.

Most aspects of vision have to do with the size of one's eye and the thickness and shape of the cornea and lens. But some visual defects are neural in nature, said Bevelier, author of the new study on vision and video games published in the journal Psychological Science.

First-person action games helped study subjects improve their spatial resolution, meaning their ability to clearly see small, closely packed together objects, such as letters, she said. Game-playing actually changes the way our brains process visual information.

"These games push the human visual system to the limits and the brain adapts to it," she said, in a prepared statement. "That learning carries over into other activities and possibly everyday life."

The finding suggests that playing first-person action video games could be a useful rehabilitation therapy for people with certain vision problems, she said, such as amblyopia (or lazy eye) and the simple effects of aging.

Another study has showed that playing certain virtual reality games that involved physical motion helped stroke victims improve their ability to walk eventually.

My vision is decent-ish-bad.
I can see maybe...2 or 3 feet if the thing is really tiny.
Like, there's regular size 12 font. I can see it maybe 3 or 4 feet away, but anything farther and it's jumbles.
Though, I like glasses, so it doesn't really matter...I just ended up spending $500 on glasses a few months ago, so i'm gonna wear these glasses with pride.

But seriously, you're lucky you can see that outstretched hand clearly. I just took off my glasses to test. If my hand is any further than, say 4 inches or so from my face, it's blurry. Unless I knew who you were before my glasses came off, I'd never be able to distinguish you from any other blur I call a "person."

Mine used to be very good back in high school, but as the years went by it got worse, and these days with nothing but looking at the monitor all day at work, it doesn't help so it's not so good anymore. I have glasses, but I never wear them unless I'm on unfamiliar territory on the road.

If you can't see the Big E, I suppose that's a sign to get Lasik heh.

Don't worry though about all these guys with 20/20. EVERYONE eventually becomes farsighted with age. EVERYONE!
