by new generation , i mean starting w/ Blade in 1998 to April 2007.
Live action only

So you fans of rubber ear wearing cap, dolph lundgren puinishers will have to sit this out

Factors include : closeness in look, character to comic, acting ability ,etc

I picked the 9 imo which would be somehwat good. it doesnt have to be the title character either.

Discuss.

Jackman as Wolverine is too good, followed by Stewart and Maguire for Spider-man and Pr.X respectively.

Went with Snipes as Blade.

Im not too terribly familiar with the comic (read a few of the Midnight Sons stuff WAY back in the day), but as a half-breed vampire killer, he seemed to have good martial arts skills and the weapons he used were very comic hero-like.

I picked Ian MCkellen as Magneto. Imo, he has the martyr/fanatic powerful superiori while having some positive qualities, i e not just a straigh tvbillain /or hero.

-I like maguire as peter, but imo Raimi needs to have the wisecracking spider-man more in play. most of the humor seems to come from parkers bad lcuk and such, but ha rarely makes fun of the villain and sometimes goes into melodrama emo phase a bit much.
If spidey 4 is (mor elike when), i hope they make spidey more wisecracking ireeverent and less maudlin.

I guess it would really depend on criteria; is it based on not having to modify the character too far from the comic, or just some "he/she looks cool" sorta thing.

Honestly, i really dont see too much of a problem with any of the casting. Im sure people hated Vinnie Jones as Jugg, but youre not gonna find someone that size. The accent and such varied, so i guess that's not too accurate.

I think Snipes, and Patrick Stuart were pretty much spot-on. Stuart for being an old, bald white guy (?), and Snipes for having some real-life martial arts skills.

And Tobey was a nice choice aswell.

Snipes as Blade ELEVATED the character's position in the mainstream and somewhat in the comic world. He is going to be the standard for any Blade protrayal (live action, comic or otherwise) for a long time.

Next would be Stewart as Professor X, only because he brings a huge level of class to any character he plays. Even if he is only in the movie for maybe thirty minutes.

McKellen as Magneto. Can't top that in my eyes. He practically makes part three worth sitting through.

I like Stewart as Xavier, Snipes as Blade, Dafoe as the Goblin (mirror scene FTW!!!), J. K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson (No one mentioned HIM yet??), and Chris Evans as the Human Torch.

I'd say Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man, but he kinda delves into that "spacey bug-eyed look of wonder" too damn much, and some of his lines sound like he's asking questions.

Patrick Stewart is too obvious. He was MADE to be Xavier. The casting director's first and only pick, I'm sure. Hugh Jackman also makes a great Wolverine (IMO he would also make a great Solid Snake). Nightcrawler's missing...

Spidey's another great choice, although it's debatable because of how the webbing is generated...J.K. Simmons as J. J. is near-perfect casting. Almost as good as Xavier.

It's hard to choose just one character in the poll, but I'm leaning towards Xavier. You simply can't cast anyone else for the role.

Million
04-19-2007, 07:50 AM
yeah, it's been said a million times. Stewart was destined to be Xavier. In fact, people should just call him that from now on, no matter what the situation. When I happen to see an episode of his era of Star Trek, I think "oh there's Prof. X". He was and always will be Xavier.

2nd place is definitely Spiderman/Tobey. heh, what the hell kind of name is that anyway? "Tobey" sounds like the kid who got beat up by a girl in elementary school....even his name gives off the idea of someone who is perfect to play a geek-turned-superhero. There's always that other guy(Jake something?) they could use who looks like a carbon copy of Tobey....I can never remember his name, but he and McGuire are basically clones.

You're as about as retarded as the movie you love.

Anyway, Blade is definitely the answer in this poll. Stewart was just too obvious. But, Snipes as Blade? That was God tier casting right there. You couldn't pick anyone better. Shit, now I gotta go get the first Blade movie on DVD. He set the standard as far as casting calls go for Marvel comic book movies.

I like Tobey as Peter/Spidey, but I agree with AngryLiberal's post. Those are the same points I made in the Spidey 3 trailer thread. In my case(to go with Million's post), I'd cast Topher Grace as Spidey. He has that charisma that Tobey lacks.

It's a tough call between Stewart and Snipes.

As said, Stewart IS Xavier...hiring anyone else to portray him in live action is pretty much unthinkable.

However, Snipes deserves a TON of credit...he turned a fairly obscure and unpopular character into a mainstream comic book hero name who's now pretty much considered a Marvel A-Lister. SOLELY based on his portrayal.

I picked Hugh Jackman since he's pretty spot on to me. He's a little tall for Wolvie but they usually draw him taller than he's supposed to be anyway. He's the only actor on the poll that I'd have a tough time seeing him being replaced by anybody.

Xavier's American so his movie accent doesn't fly with me. It's okay to make him sound a little educated like the 90s cartoon, but not that accent. Still if I was making an X-Men movie I would cast Patrick Stuart anyway and say screw it. But due to that, I pick Hugh Jackman over him. Comic book nerdiness for the loss I guess.

I still wonder why they decided to make Juggernaut british or whatever (he's American too in the comics) and not establish that he's Xavier's stepbrother in the third X-Men movie. Strange strange comic book movies...

Xavier by a longshot. the last film showed he had that darkside and his good intentions were almost as skewed as magnetos. that's where he's at in the comic. Him and mags are on the same level as far as moral terpitude.

I'm gonna base mine on suprise factor, because let's be real. Like everyone said Stewart=Xavier. Period. That was a fucking given before they finished saying his name linking him to the movie. That being said....

JK Simmons as J.J. Jameson
Wesley Snipes as Blade
Ian Mckellen as Magneto

Those are the 3 top tier.

Dafoe deserves WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY more than the 2 votes he has now. Dafoe >>>>>>> everyone else on that list, both IRL and as a Marvel character. Dafoe Goblin is the truth.

I say turn the tables on him and ask HIM why the bed is broken...

Based on the selection...

#1 Blade - When I first saw the first fim, I didn't know it had anything to do with Marvel. Then I looked over some of my old school 95' Fleer Ultra Marvel card collection and found his card. Even still everything I know about Blades story line is from the movies. Thats's all, and I think it was Wesley Snipes acting that made me like Blade as a character. He's the only person who can play this character in opinion now. His acting as the character in all 3 films was very good imo... but the movies themself went from good to bad in sequential order. Always in costume. Doesn't dissapoint.

#2 Wolverine - I think Jackman does too good of a job as Wolverine. So good that everytime I see him out of costume I think "Wolverine". Regaurdless of the comic flaws the movies hold. Overall, he does his part with perfectly. Always in costume like Wesley and doesn't dissapoint.

#3 Spider-Man - I know more about Spidey than I do about Blade. Who doesn't. The Spiderman movies are all top tier films imo. Regaurldess of the flaws betwen them and the books. Tobey plays the role almost flawlessly. Everytime he's in costume the movie is exiting, but because of this, I'm not sure if it's his character or his acting that I like better. Maybe I don't like Peter Parker. I think the costume is doing the work here though.

I voted Blade.

Also, after posting my responses, I would've added Doc. Oc in as well.

Pat/Xavior - Too perfect, so perfect I think he's cheating. Xavior was designed around Pat. He doesn't even have to act his role. Hax I'm tellin you.

Rutger Hower should have been Magneto. He's cold enough in some of his roles, and he knows how to act fucked up/ crazy. The magneto they portrayed in the initial launch of the X-men series in the 90's and then the one in fatal attractions was practically made to be Rutger Hower and Rutger Hower could walk that line of cold and cunning / ruthless and unhinged EXTEMELY well. I like Ian McKlellan as Magneto but I always thought Rutger Hower would have made a fantastic Magneto.

Tobey is too Emo. Topher Grace would have been a better Peter Parker because he's actually funny, and could do the wise cracking thing that Tobey can't. Any jokes Tobey makes just sound hollow and stupid.

JK Simmons as J.J. Jameson was the best casting decision ever made in ANY Marvel movie because that guy fucking NAILED it. Willim Dafoe made an INCREDIBLE Norman Osbourne as well. Talk about fucking crazy.

I'm really not understanding people picking McKellon as Mags for one reason. Magneto is rarely IF EVER portrayed as a frail old man who just HAPPENS to be able to control magnetism. In all of his incarnations over the years he has always been strong/muscular aside from his powers. Magneto also displays a great deal more emotion than McKellon ever did in the movies.

Bad, bad choice I think.

I'll go with an underdog and very much against the grain and say Chris Evan's Human Torch is the best overall screen adaptation of a Marvel cat I've ever seen. He has Johnny's attitude down and the CG for Torch is fairly believable.

I don't get how Wesley Snipes nailed down the character of Blade.

Wesley Snipes made Blade = Wesley Snipes. So of course Wesley Snipes was awesome as Wesley Snipes. He's a badass black guy in shades. Done. How was Blade different than like...any Wesley Snipes movie?

Blade is a guy who has barely appeared in comics since the 1970's - there pretty much IS no character. You could have thrown in like Denzel or like Randy Jackson in there, and you guys would have thought he nailed the role. There was no set character with personality and stuff, no existing role that Wesley Snipes had to fill.

I'm really not understanding people picking McKellon as Mags for one reason. Magneto is rarely IF EVER portrayed as a frail old man who just HAPPENS to be able to control magnetism. Yeah, you remember when Jim Lee used to draw Magneto? They should have had Ahnuld play him. Gandalf was a bit to frail for me, I'm with you - but overall X-Men and X2 were excellent movies in every respect, and you always have to keep in mind that these are literal translations of the comics.

Like the leather jackets worked a lot better than yellow spandex would have.

Molina was awesome as Doc Oct, and all the Spidey movies were awesomely cast...

'cept we were having a discussion one time right after Spidey 1 came out and way before Spidey 3 was even considered, and someone brought up how awesome Eric Foreman would have been for Spider-Man...and ever since then I haven't been able to fully enjoy the movies because I keep thinking how much better Topher would be than Tobey.

Though Tobey was very good...I'm scared of watching Spider-Man 3 and seeing Eddie Brock be more Petery than Peter himself.

And if they had signed Topher, they should have just thrown in Donna as Mary Jane as well.

!

to be fair, the "realism" kick bryan singer was on, heavily influenced this.
Since Singer was eager to have someone who could almost seem as if he was old enough to be in the holocaust (granted mckellen is prolly still to young to be og the proper age).
Another thing is that the heavily muscled magnus didnt come to be popular really till Jim lee. If you love at JAck kirby, and especially Dave cockrums uncanny 150 or thereabout, mckellen is eerily similar.

Still, rutger hauer would have been a great choice now that i think about. I remember wizard magazine picked him to play magnus in their casting couch fantasy articles in the mid 90's. the only one of those to come true was stewart as Xavier tho.

Ian McKellan, without a doubt. Just the way he portrays himself--that barely veiled arrogance, the underlying tone of sinister menace in every syllable that comes out of his mouth. . .great stuff that fits Magneto from the comic books to a T. Yeah, definitely Jackman. Wolverine was meant to be played by a tall, handsome, elegant-nosed showtunes singer. I was pumping my fist in excitement at the end of the second movie as Wolverine and Cyclops cried while draping over each other after Jean died. Vintage Wolverine. Nothing convincing about that portrayal, at all. Maybe if they had stepped on Jackman's face a couple dozen times and sawed him off at the shins, otherwise get that shit outta here.
