WELLINGTON, New Zealand (May 2) - A plucky Jack Russell terrier named George saved five children from two marauding pit bulls, but was so severely mauled in the fight that it had to be put down, its owner said Wednesday.

George was playing with the group of children as they returned home from buying sweets at a neighborhood shop in the small North Island town of Manaia last Sunday when the two pit bulls appeared and lunged toward them, Allan Gay said.

"George was brave - he took them on and he's not even a foot high," Gay told The Associated Press. "He jumped in on them, he tried to keep them off.

"If it wasn't for George, those kids would have copped it."

One of the children, Richard Rosewarne, 11, was quoted in the Taranaki Daily News on Wednesday as saying George fought with the pit bulls to keep them off his 4-year-old brother, Darryl.

"George tried to protect us by barking and rushing at them, but they started to bite him - one on the head and the other on the back," Rosewarne said. "We ran off crying and some people saw what was happening and rescued George."

But George was so badly mauled that a veterinarian had to put him down, Gay said.

South Taranaki District Council official Graham Young said the two pit bulls had been impounded, and likely would be put down because of the attack.

In New Zealand, owners of dogs judged to be too aggressive can be required to have them neutered and dogs involved in attacks are destroyed.

This is why I prefer dogs over cats. Referring to the small dog not the asshole pitbulls.

I feel bad for the dog sounded like a badass dog they should put a memorial at that spot in honor of the dog, but realy only one line comes to mind...

Jack Russels are fucking awesome. I have one as well, and he's probably the most loving and protective dog ever. Kinda gets annoying sometimes, since he tends to growl at anything that could possibly pose a threat, but he's great. I'm not too suprised to hear that one would do something like this.

The issue with pit bulls is that it's the owners that raise them to be like that. Where I grew up, they were mostly breeded for fights.

True story: One time when I was 7 this huge mean ass chow was stalking towards me and my cat with hair standing on in, growling, drooling the whole nine yards. I was freaked, but what does my fearless brave kitty do? He actually jumps up on my shoulder and uses me as a trampoline to jump onto a nearby tree.

Turns out the chow wasn't mean after all, but that was the day I realized how worthless cats are in situations like that. :bluu:

Totally. Cats just do not have that kind of loyalty for its owner, and will run away without hesitation.

No matter how small a dog is, it'll still stand there fearlessly and defend its territory or owner to the best of its ability in that situation.

George is awesome, but I hate how animals (the pit bulls) get put down because of instinct or training. A human attacks someone, they get some jail time or something. A dog attacks someone, they kill it. All life is equal. Except for insects and spiders. They can go fuck themselves.

I have a Jack Russel as well and he is the exact same way. The funny thing is my neighboors have 2 pitbulls but they are very well trained. One day my dog busted through my screened patio and ran right up to those dogs, and started barking and growling at them when my neighboor was walking his dogs. He told those pits to stay and to not move. My dog was being a dick and was all up in thier faces but those pitts didnt move once. Im glad my neighboor has well trained dogs cause that could have been the end on my dog, Charley.

Dogs are loyal to an extent, just like any other animal. I've known people with dogs, and they were real good with them, turn on them. But people fail to realize that it's the individual animal and not the species itself. I use to have a cat that would scratch the fuck out of someone fucking with me. :tup: A this story is also the fucking reason I can't stand pitbulls. Pit bulls are naturally aggressive, regardless of how they are bred. That's why you shouldn't leave them near children.

That doesn't mean that you can't have a gentle pit bull or a raging german shepherd. But given loving raising conditions, a pit bull is more likely to attack you if you do something it perceives as aggressive, like, say, a child getting in the dog's face, unlike a more gentle breed like the shepherd.

Naturally aggressive dogs need responsible owners. There should be testing and licensing to see if an owner can handle an aggressive dog. I'm dead serious.

I really really fucking hate pit bulls. My grandmother's mailwoman got mauled so badly by one that she was in the hospital for like 4 months, and all they did was put the dog to sleep. The owner fucking had all this equipment for dog fighting in their back yard and they didn't do anything to him for breeding a killing machine. If you are teaching a dog to fight, and/or have the equipment, then you belong in prison.

Edit: And yes, aggressive breeds will attack children/people for no reason. One of my good friends had his 2 year old mauled by a Pitt that they never taught to be aggressive and always treated well.

....beat them, teach them to fight, feed them gun powder, feed them meth, abuse them, rub pepper in their eyes, tie them to a tree and poke them with a stick and yes....they are gonna fuck somebody up.

The breed has potential to be agressive for sure, but so do all terriers. Dobes, Rotts, German Shepherds, Presas, Chows....all need special attention and owners that know and want to train them properly.
