I thougth about building a custom stick, but for a PS3. The new hardware has me a little intimidated. I just got a HFS3, and want to mod that, but what's stopping me is that I don't know if the sticks I saw on LizardLick.com are compatible....heard something about mounting compatibility. Asked the guy (Chad) at LizardLick, and he said to as SRK! Full circle.
So, if I can't replace the stick in my HFS3 with Sanwa parts, I'm wondering if I can gut out the HFS3, and combine it with Sanwa parts in a custom box.

im in the middle of that too, the stick costs as much as a sixaxis, and you can take out the pcb and but in a dualshock in there
and then use the fs3 pcb in a custom box :lovin:

Search for a local carpenter, or look for someone in your area that can work with wood.

I don't have room or the tools for woodwork/painting.
Just do what i and many others have: find an ok quality stock stick on the market, and put real arcade parts inside it. Also saves trouble on figuring out how to hack a PCB for your stick.
I neither had the access or knowledge to do the wood work necessary. When i read about the capcom anniversary stick having a solid case w/ease of swapping in happ parts, i was sold on the AC.

i think that this was posted already but ill say it anyways. buy an arcade sick and swap the stock parts for real arcade parts i dont think that you need to solder for that,
You can usually pull off the wires and put in qd's and itll work the same :3

I'm currently in the process right now.
I'm trying to pad hack a Dreamcast Official pad, so far I cannot get the damn thing to work.
I got the box built and everything.
Here's the problem.
Board #1, got all the face buttons to work, joystick stuck in the down position.
Re solderd, all face buttons worked only when joystick held to the left.
Threw it out.
Board #2 X,Y,L,R, work. Joystick all screwy, recognizes left and right as A.
Is there a reliable diagram that someone has used to solder an offical DC pad.
I use this diagram. http://nuclearplayground.com/joysticks/joystick_images/dc_segapad/Sega_Pad_Detail.gif
Does anyone know if that's accurate.
I have like 4 more Offical DC pads to go through and there are plenty out there.
I have one MadCatz pad, I know they're incredibly easy, and I'm going to use that one for my 2nd stick, I want 2 so when my friends come over we can both enjoy MvC2 the way its meant to be played.
I've read about the delay of the L and R's but I do not think that's accurate because I was assisting and doing THCs at will when a few of the buttons worked.

All you need to do is go to home depot with measurements. They'll cut wood to size. You just need to drill the holes and screw the thing together. There are easy to use templates online.

Where? I've looked everywhere for a Japanese layout and evetually had to make my own. Just wondering for anyone who else may be wondering.
Oh and nothing stopped me from making my custom stick!
My dad has pretty much all the tools to make one so I set out and finished the entire thing in about 2 weeks.
First box - PoS, threw it away.
Second box - Better, so I wired it and working fully.
Third box - Starting work on it, looking awesome so far.
I can tell this third box is gonna be 200% better than the 2nd. So really it's all about trial and error. I found out what doesn't work, what ruins the whole thing, and the easiest way to do certain things.

I dont know the materials....needed...
Here's what I used.
For the box:
3/4" MDF Fiberboard for top and sides
1/4" MDF Fiberboard for bottom
Average size Wood screws to hold it together
Wood Filler to fill the holes
8x10 precut sheet of Lexan. (You can buy a bigger sheet and cut it to whatever length you need)
Few different grit sand papers
Whatever color spray paint you want
For the electrics:
Radioshack -
8-Position Dual-Row Barrier Strips
8-Position Jumper
Female Crimp-On Quick-Disconnects (10-Pack)
Not sure what guage wire.. I just used some extra I had left over
Think that's about all you need material wise.

Measurements for the above are in millimeter, and if you ignore the rightmost two 30mm buttons, is the most accurate Japanese layout I've seen.

Right now the only thing stopping me is hesitance.
I bought a custom stick off of eBay for 40USD with the purpose of modding to my own visual liking (ie I hate yellow buttons). When it came in a few weeks ago I opened it up to take a gander at what I was getting into and thankfully I somwhat understand whats going on in there. I'll be fine with the wires going from the buttons to the pcb, however what do I do with the metal wiring that maps all the buttons (ie do I need to desolder it or try to make something similar)? I'll probably need to take a pic of it tonight to provide more clarity.
I've got a soldering gun (and have access to a pump of desoldering IIRC), so all I need to do is order my sanwa parts and draw my face art. Joy. :looney:

If that doesn't make sense to you, you're SOL. If it does, there you go, that's how to do it.
If you use a NC (normally closed) SPST analog switch IC like the MAX4611, you dont even need the inverter chip. One chip and you're good with all 4 directions.

For me, I have a hrap2 but I really don't want to chance messing it up. My plan is to hopefully find someone near me who knows what they are doing and go from there. I want to get rid of the turbo switches, move the start and select buttons to the side of the stick (depending on how hard that will be), bring it down to six buttons and place a custom picture I'm having a friend make for me. At this point I don't even have the picture so I'm not rushing, though knowing who I could pay to do it for me would be awesome.

I have always wanted to make my own arcade stick. Now I have finally mustered up the courage to try it out. However it seems the only seller of arcade (jap) parts for UK is gremlin solutions, I want to know if they are a good source or are there prices a bit over board. I want to save money cos I don’t know how many times I will screw up (plus need to buy every tool as I have none) would it be cheaper to order from US?

Do you have the tools or access to them? Most places like home debot won't do angled cuts, I've found. I'm pretty sure you would need for that particular style. If you don't know someone with a table saw, I would print out measurements from his website and bring them to a local wood crafter for cutting.
From there, you can either assemble with woodscrews or brads (nails with small heads) and glue. For minimum fuss, you can use contact paper as a finish. It doesn't look as nice as stain/pain and laquer, but it is significantly less time consuming.
I haven't personally gotten any good advice on plexi tops, so I couldn't help you there.

Too damn expensive to bring the parts down here, so I still need to gather more money. Also, I think that the wiring can't be that hard, so it's not a problem, but all the case building tutorials are for plain cases, I'd like to be able to do something with more advanced materials and results, like the known names that build greatly designed cases of high quality here in SRK.

I actually am doing that now. I had one chunk I hollowed out from the right. The only problem would be getting everything in since there's not enough room to work with your hands.
Second one I hollowed out from the top. There'll still be a wooden panel on top. so it's actually one chunk and one board.
Gonna look nice though.

Hopefully, nothing is going to stop me now that I acquired some sticks and buttons on ebay. I've practically looked at almost every thread in the Tech Talk forum to lessen my chances of messing up really badly. But I still have some questions before anything starts.
1) I don't have a router, will an Ultimarc J-Stik need any routing if I bottom mount it on 1/2" MDF? From my understanding a J-Stik is a modified Sanwa JLW with a longer shaft. Is that correct?
2) Anyone know where to get a good curved button layout template for Happ Competition buttons? Preferably one that tells you exactly where you have to drill holes into. Most of the Happ templates I've come across uses the straight button layout.

That should work for sanwa parts too right? I just need a solid template. I found this somewhere on SRK as well.

Also, I plan to make an Ivan Drago stick. Dunno if I want to have a dark cherry case or just spraypaint it red. If I do the cherry case, I will prolly go with red buttons/balltop. Spraypaint, to with yellow buttons/balltop. I guess it depends on how my stick art request turns out. Color scheme suggestions are welcomed.

Art size will be 8.5 x 10.5. I think the stick itself will prolly be 9.5 x 11.5 x 2.5. Maybe have it "curve in" or some shit like that.
I'm excited.

Thanks Shoo. I actually downloaded that previously already but I thought they were for Sanwa buttons due to the fact the diameter for the buttons are listed as 30mm is it not?

I recommend checking local fleamarkets. Most have a few used game vendors.
Other than that, ebay/amazon.com

IMO, the hardest part of making a custom stick is getting the graphic right as well as a nice housing. In the summer, I will be bothered to find out how to print the graphic properly, cut the plastic cover for it and get my dad to help me make up a housing for it. Wiring etc is the easy part...

You can pretty much follow any HRAP/HRAP2 modding guide, except that you'll need to desolder your wires instead of just pulling out the quick disconnects. I'm not too sure about the stick either, but just use the search function. Many people have asked this question before.

Not sure if this thread is still going (shoo), but building the box is what's stumping me. At first I was terrified of the wiring, but that doesn't seem so hard now. I got a couple of ps1 dualshocks I can do the spiffyshoes hack on if I need to, and I opened up an old ps controller I had laying around that doesn't look too bad to wire to.
Now I don't know how to build this damn box. I've looked at paik's log, but I have no interest in building out of a solid block. I'm a total beginner woodworker, so the simpler the better. Aside from basically building a rectangle, I'm not really sure how to mount the stick and plexi and stuff like that.

you should add this tutorial http://www.slagcoin.com/joystick/example3.html to the list of reasons. It gives directions on making stix without all the expensive power tools(well it looks like it to me)
lol i actually had enough money to build my own at one point, but then life took it all away D:
oh and as for no paypal/credit card
just get one of em prepaid ones

Oh, wow thanks! That's perfect! I had been looking at slagcoin a lot, and it's been very helpful so far, but this looks perfect. I must have just skipped right over it.
Thanks SRK. You da best.

Time constraints and inexperience with a lot of tools.I can do basic cutting, screwing etc but I never learned anything with sanding, painting, working with glass or hole puncturing(for buttons).Once I'm done with college and have that 6-12 month job search period(happened to just about everyone I know)I'll definitely invest some time into making my own.

I'm pretty sure any furniture maker will be glad to help with the construction of the box for a couple bucks... I'm going to do that soon, as the best powertool I've got is a power drill :0
