View Full Version : So what headphones does SRK recommend?

Alright, well I know SRK loves their music... especially music with good bass.
My pair of Sony clip-over-the-ear headphones recently starting flaking out on me. So, I've been looking into getting a new pair of headphones. I'd consider getting the same pair (they're < $20), but I figure I can do better.
I'm looking for something that first and foremost sounds good (which pretty much rules out the ones that go directly into your ear, since bass is shitty on those), is portable (I use headphones primarily when working out, or whenever I use my iPod), and is at least somewhat stylish. I may not be the most image-conscious person in the world, but I don't want to walk around with something ridiculous looking on my head.
So, what do you guys recommend?

I have a pair of Shure E2C (http://www.shure.com/PersonalAudio/Products/Earphones/ESeries/us_pa_E2c_content)s. Everyone around me claims they've blown them out and have gone through more than one pair, but I've been on the same pair for the past three years with no issue. They're kinda weird fitting at first, but once you get used to them, they're awesome.
EDIT: oops, you said you didn't want in-ear ones. My bad.

a lot of iems produce bass.
e2c does not produce enough bass on an ipod.
ex71 produce a lot of bass, but the wiring is too fragile.
v-moda vibe produces enough bass and sounds way better than an e2c.
I have tried all three of these and vibe > 71 > e2c in terms of bass. vibe > all in terms of mids and highs.

my sister has the sens hd212 pro. They're pretty awesome unless you are too self conscious about big cans. i don't think i would recommend them for fitness though.

Audiophiles seem to like and think highly of Koss's KSC-75. Take a look into it. I have a pair myself and the sound is pwnage but I hate the fitting.

i have a full size pair of sennheiser HD212. love them, they're designed for DJs so the bass is out of control. all other sennheiser's i've come across have also been excellent. i think PX100 are the best lightweight headphones for your buck.

Headphones, one of my more favourite subjects.
It all totally depends on what you want and how much you're willing to spend.
Since you said portable, imply bassy, and somewhat stylish:
I will start off by recommending the V-Moda Vibe. For more subwoofer-y (but to most, less "good"), the V-Moda Bass Freq. If you want head subwoofers and don't mind a bigger aesthetic, the HD212 is cheap and bass for days. Sounding better but quite, uh, not stylish is KSC-75s or PortaPros.
If you really want to get into it, headfi.com is to headphones what SRK is to fighting games.
Usually fitness headphones don't go so well with excellent sound, but the best I've found for working out are http://www.sennheiserusa.com/newsite/productdetail.asp?transid=500504
I've run 10+ miles at a time and never had to adjust them on my head. Sound is better than most (if not all) fitness headphones I've tried. Long cord + cord clip = win. Some people might be turned off by the bright green, but it does turn a few heads.

I have these - http://www.bose.com/controller?event=VIEW_PRODUCT_PAGE_EVENT&product=qc2_headphones_index
The best I've had yet and the best out there(I've had my share of headphones)
A couple years ago I heard the sony dj headphones were good. I have some bose ones, and they are alright.
I'm sure the BOSE ones are good and all...but fuck THAT shit. They better sew a Fleshlight and an arcade stick on one of those bitches if I'm gonna pay $300 for a pair.
Anyway, if you're looking for a cheap pair, these are really good for the price:
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-MDR-V150-Monitor-Headphones-Reversible/dp/B000092YPR/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3/105-2002161-5407631?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1180860310&sr=8-3
I'm not a fan of Sony stuff generally, as it tends to be overpriced, but these have been good to me, and you can find them in a random Wal Mart for $20.
Stay away from KOSS. They will stop working. Guaranteed.

I used to wear Philips headphones. The sound quality was decent, but I went through three of those motherfuckers in five months; they're made of cheap plastic, and break after minimal use.
I'm presently wearing Panasonic Stereo RP-HT355 headphones, and they're amazing; huge, comfortable, and unbelievable quality.
I've been using them an average of a few hours a day for over a year, and they're still completely undamaged, and the sound is as clear as ever.
Here's the link;

Without breaking the bank, the Koss KSC-75 is a great choice for a great sounding portable solution. Do the Kramer mod and you got yourself the best sounding headphones you can get for $10. Like TheIlluminati mentioned you should definitely check out Head-Fi, especially their sale forums.

For headphones I recommend any of these:
- Audio-Technica ATH-A900 (http://www.audiocubes.com/product/Audio-Technica_ATH-A900_Art_Headphones.html)
- Audio-Technica ATH-A700 (http://www.audiocubes.com/category/Headphones_Audiophile,+Hifi/product/Audio-Technica_ATH-A700_Art_Headphones.html)
- Audio-Technica ATH-A500 (http://www.audiocubes.com/category/Headphones_Audiophile,+Hifi/product/Audio-Technica_ATH-A500_Art_Headphones.html)
Maybe those are way too big for what you want.
Are you sure you do not want to consider in-ear ear buds?
It is mostly Sony's fault the in-ear ear buds got a bad bass reputation.
For ear buds I recommend any of these:
In-Ear:
- Sharp MD33-S (http://www.audiocubes.com/product/Sharp_HP-MD33S_Four_Pole_Headphones.html)
- Sennheiser CX300 S/B (http://www.sennheiserusa.com/newsite/productdetail.asp?transid=500831)
- Creative EP-630 (http://www.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=437&subcategory=441&product=11397)
- Shure E4 (http://www.shure.com/PersonalAudio/Products/Earphones/ESeries/us_pa_E4c_content)
- Ultimate Ears super.fi5 Pro (http://www.ultimateears.com/superfi/item__view_item__prod-979.html)
- Sony MDR-EX90 (http://www.audiocubes.com/product/Sony_MDR-EX90SL_Earphones.html) (The wire is thicker, and the bass is less exaggerated but still Sony.)
Conventional:
- Sennheiser MX400 (http://www.sennheiserusa.com/newsite/productdetail.asp?transid=004853) (Personally I hate the foam)
I have less experience with clip-ons because I wear eye glasses.
Clip-On:
- Koss KSC9 (http://www.koss.com/koss/kossweb.nsf/p?openform&pc^sc^KSC9)
- Koss P14 / P16 (http://www.koss.com/koss/kossweb.nsf/p?openform&pc^bh^P16)
The range of the above Koss Clip-Ons does not goes as far as the others I mentioned.
- Koss KSC 75 (http://www.koss.com/koss/kossweb.nsf/p?openform&pc^sc^KSC75)

I use these, inner ear phones are weird at first, but are perfect for what I use them for, biking etc... These get good bass, but I know there are others that get better. If you want the bulky over ear ones, then go for it, but there is many inner ear ones that have plenty bass.

i use these for editing and composing on my computer. these are really the only pair of studio quality head set ive used, so i cant tell you how they compare to other ones. what are you using these for? these arent too portable tho cuz of the long ass cord thats meant to be plugged into areas across a mix board.
ear buds are bad for your ears anyway. good idea to look at head phones.

BOSE...everything i've heard from them has been great. I'm a military brat so my dad is a BOSE freak. He has bought me everything BOSE I have, ipod stereo, bose radio/cd player, and their headphones.
Headphones (QC2) are nice but heavy; they also make your ears sweat but I havent heard anything that has come close to BOSE

You can't really go wrong with BOSE only thing is kind of expensive but it worth it
If you really want to get into it, headfi.com is to headphones what SRK is to fighting games.
I have to agree, Head-Fi is the best headphone site there is.
When you want to buy new headphones, there's two things to consider: price and sound quality. If you want good quality headphones, you may have to pay a bit. The motto over at Head-fi is "Welcome to Head-Fi, sorry about your wallet", which is true when you're shopping around.
Okay, my post got erased and I wrote quite a bit...but here's what I recommend looking at (ranged from cheapest to most expensive):
Koss KSC75 (http://www.headphone.com/guide/by-headphone-type/clip-on-type/koss-ksc-75.php) - I own a pair of these headphones and they're pretty damn good for the price. Only problem is the ear clip - it's VERY flimsy, so if you're afraid you might break them, these may not be for you. personally, I'm really careful about these things and yet mine still broke on me.
Sennheiser PMX 100 (http://www.headphone.com/guide/by-headphone-type/street-style-type/sennheiser-pmx-100.php) - never listened to these but they've given it a good review. The Sennheiser series generally gets good hype over at Head-fi.
iGrado (http://www.headphone.com/guide/by-headphone-type/street-style-type/grado-igrado-white.php) - Grado has always been praised over at Head-fi and to this day I use a type of Grado at home. Might want to look into this.
As for a different type of headphone..and going higher in price:
Shure E3C (http://www.headphone.com/guide/by-headphone-type/in-ear-monitor-type/shure-e3c.php) - I've used these before and they're perfect for all-around listening. I've upgraded these to the
Shure E4C (http://www.headphone.com/guide/by-headphone-type/in-ear-monitor-type/shure-e4c-black.php) - which are even better then the e3c's but of course higher in price.
Shure e500 (http://www.headphone.com/guide/by-headphone-type/in-ear-monitor-type/shure-e500.php) - Now we're really going overboard in price here, but this is a top choice for earphones.
At Head-Fi's Buy/Sell/Trade forum, you can buy used headphones for a much cheaper price. If you don't want to buy used headphones, I personally buy at earphonesolutions.com .
I think it's always important to do some research before you choose to buy almost anything to make sure you get the best bang for your buck. What I've listed are some of the top choices I'd recommend and I've lurked at Head-fi for quite some time.
BTW, although I've personally never listened to Bose headphones, the people over at Head-fi don't like Bose at all. Buy Other Sound Equipment is what they call it. Again, I don't know how Bose sounds but that's just what they have to say about it.

Another vote for the Koss KSC-75. The fitting is weird until you adjust the bendable metal clip and depending on what kind of workout you do they might not stay on. I haven't had the clip on mine break yet, the only part that can break is the join between the clip and the driver really. The the bass is really good and the mids are pretty clear. You have to consider what kind of music you will be listening to, your price range, and file format of your songs though. But the KSC-75 is a good all around pair of headphones. You can get them at circuit city for $20 and they come with a lifetime warranty. I have a pair myself for portable listening and a pair of Senn HD 595 for use at home.
I haven't had much experience with BOSE either, but from all the bad reviews and the prices, I would just stay away from them. Most of the low end Sony headphones aren't so good either. But yeah, if you don't want to do a lot of research at headfi, just get the KSC-75, you won't regret it.

Definintely right. From a price/performance standpoint, the Marshmallow -also known as the FX33- is a great buy and provides substantial bass. An audiophile might call it bloated, but many people, including me, would call it a fun sound.
The stock tips provide the most bass.If you want to try balancing out the sound, you can try using tips from the Shure E2C; the foam and soft flex tips work well.
