Genre doesn't really matter, although it would be nice if something other than hip-hop was played.

If you want to get their attention I'd slip in a couple old-school joints.. stuff they listened to when they were in elementary or middle school..

wouldn't rap, whether its gangsta or not be just a subgenre of hiphop?

Depends on what kind of house party you're having. If it's just a chill-out party or an after-after-after-party kind of thing, I'd want to have some downbeat or "Starbucks music" playing. Stuff that is not necessarily there for you to say "OOOH I REMEMBER THIS SHIT", but more just to have something going when there's awkward silence during conversations. Look for Ministry of Sound's Chillout Sessions compilations.

Man, I thought that song was by some random, fat, black, soulful guy like Luther Vandross or Billy Ocean or some shit.
Instead, I'm greeted by some fucking pasty-ass 11th grader. Fuck you, 1980s!

Deep House, it's classy and has a rhythm people can follow.
Gene Farris, Nicholas Matar, Ian Pooley, Miguel Miggs. would be some good artists.
