When fire goes wrong...

Flaming bar trick leaves student badly burned

A young woman who suffered severe burns from an exploding fireball after a cocktail bar trick went wrong is calling for the banning of similar stunts.

Miro Szabados still finds it difficult to look in the mirror after suffering extensive burns to her face, neck and hands during a night out with friends. The first-year fashion and design student at Massey University in Wellington, told the Sunday Star-Times that she is traumatised and afraid of fire after last month's incident.

The petite 19-year old was waiting for a drink at Maya Bar in Wellington in the early hours of May 13 when she was hit by a sheet of flame after another patron interfered with a display by the barman.

He was performing a trick, called a cinnamon sparkle - which involved lining the bar track with Chartreuse liqueur, lighting it and then sprinkling cinnamon over the flames to cause it to sparkle.

The trick went drastically wrong when a young man walked behind the bar and grabbed a bottle of cleaning fluid, which he believed to be alcohol. He told police that he then squirted the fluid on the flames to give them "a boost".

The flames exploded, shooting a metre-high sheet of fire across the bar that witnesses described as a "fireball".

"I saw a man pouring clear liquid onto the bar and then suddenly there was a flash of light. The next thing I remember is being on the ground patting myself, crying and being in intense pain," Szabados said.

The man, Jed William Curtis, a 21-year-old from Roseneath in Wellington, has been charged with disfiguring a woman with reckless disregard for the safety of others and faces a maximum sentence of seven years' jail. He has been remanded on bail.

Szabados was taken to Hutt Hospital where doctors operated on her extensively burned face, neck and hands for over two hours.

She remained in hospital for a week and is likely to suffer permanent discolouration to the areas where she was burned.

"It makes me very angry that this could have happened so easily - the man who did it was able to get into a back room to get the fluid. I don't think they should be allowed to do this. A bar is a small enclosed area and this shows how easy it is for this to go wrong. And anyone, even from in front of the bar could have done this and had the same effect."

Maya Bar was investigated by the Department of Labour after the incident, but officials found it was not in breach of any health and safety laws in performing the trick.

Bar manager Tim Ruck declined to comment on the incident.

Hospitality Association chief executive Bruce Robertson said such incidents were isolated. "But anybody doing flaming work needs to take special care, making sure that they have put in place safety precautions. A lot of premises already don't practise this type of trick because of safety concerns."

This isn't that newsworthy, but something bugged me about it. It's wrong to just be at the bar chilling one second and catching a fireball of flames the next.

heres an update 27/10/07
A teenage student engulfed by a fireball after a patron interfered with a pyrotechnic trick in one of Wellington's inner-city bars may have permanent scarring.

Wilton courier driver Jed William Curtis, 21, pleaded guilty yesterday to setting fire to 18-year-old Miro Szabados on the day he was supposed to begin a depositions hearing at Wellington District Court.

He had originally been charged with disfiguring Ms Szabados.

Judge James Rota remanded Curtis on bail till November 30 for a possible restorative justice meeting and sentence.

In the summary of facts admitted to the court, Curtis had been a self-employed DJ and had worked at bars around Wellington including Maya Bar in Blair St.

However, on May 13 he was there as a patron, standing at the end of the bar in an area designated for bar staff access.

Curtis had been drinking before going to Maya and later described himself to police as moderately drunk.

Ms Szabados, a fashion and design student at Massey University, was at the bar waiting to be served when the bartender performed a pyrotechnic trick, called a cinnamon sparkle, by laying a line of the liqueur Chartreuse along the bar then lighting it.

The liquor burns blue then cinnamon is sprinkled in, creating a sparkling effect.

Police said Curtis moved behind the bar to a small back room, normally used only by bar staff, which holds personal gear as well as cleaning equipment.

He took a clear bottle containing methylated spirits from a shelf and was seen to pour the liquid in a sweeping motion into the fire.

Witnesses said the flames immediately turned orange and created a fireball that flew out beyond the edge of the bar.

Fire leapt to the face, hands, chest and neck of Ms Szabados, who fell to the ground.

Other patrons patted out the flames while bar staff got water to pour over her.

Meanwhile, Curtis went back behind the bar to get a bottle of lemonade, which he poured over the still- flaming bar.

Ms Szabados spent 10 days in hospital and needed skin grafts to repair burns to her skin. She needed physiotherapy and pain therapy and there is still the possibility she could be scarred for life.

A man at the bar had his hair set on fire but was able to put it out and did not suffer any injuries.

Curtis told police he had wanted to extend the flames but did not realise what he was adding to the fire. He admitted he had been reckless and was concerned and remorseful about the victim.

His lawyer Chris Tennet asked for an alcohol report to be prepared for sentencing.

She may have been at a bar and grill place, so that would possibly explain why she was there in the first place. I'm guessing she was sitting at the bar but not drinking any alcohol. Whatever the case, poor girl. This incident probably left her dreams in ashes.

The drinking age isn't universally 21 all around the damn planet just cause America says so. I started legally drinking at 20 when I was stationed in S. Korea years ago cause the legal age over there is 20.

Nitpicking, but you weren't legally drinking. You're still bound by the federal laws of the US no matter where you are physically as long as you're a citizen.

I know it is for american military, I don't think it is for an american citizen in another country. I know a guy who was 18 and went to another country ( I think it was Ireland) where the age was lower and he was able to drink. however, a military guy in the same area wasn't able to.

Nitpicking, but you weren't legally drinking. You're still bound by the federal laws of the US no matter where you are physically as long as you're a citizen.

Technically in terms of being a U.S. citizen, you're right, but you're also wrong. You got it quite confused. Thing is the Army, the U.S. government, allowed it. We went/go by the law of the land. If we got into trouble in a Korea or any other country we were stationed in, we had to abide by their laws and punishments first THEN we were subject to military justice.

Of course the U.S. gov't would try to intervene and help a soldier out, but we had to comply. Over there it's the opposite of the U.S., it's guilty until proven innocent. If I got into a fight with a Korean and they attacked me first, but I kicked their ass, I would be automatically guilty until proven innocent. It's different once you leave American soil. Look at that kid who got cained in Singapore back in the 90's for supposed vandalism. Clinton tried to get his ass outta trouble, but he still got an ass whoopin'

They knew how old soldiers were and high ranking officers down to the NCO's hung out at the same clubs and saw who was drinking. So I came between a technicality of governments and it was government approved.

If you were under 20 and got caught drinking, you paid the price. I had a friend who never saw the light of day in Korea and stayed on "probation" because he drank underage, by Korean and U.S. laws.
