Some Cell questions.

-Is it explained why Cell reverted to a "chrysalis" before going back in time?

-Did Cell go back in time because there were not enough people to absorb in his time due to #17/#18 killing off most of the population and thus making him to weak to absorb said androids?

I believe it's because 17 and 18 did not exist in Cell's original timeline.

I think it's something like

Timeline A = regular timeline

Timeline B = Future Trunks' world, 17/18 running rampant and killing everyone

Timeline C = Cell's world, 17/18 were killed at some point, so he killed Trunks' in this time and jacked his time machine

...I could be wrong ofc, shit can be confusing

Cell reverted to a larva, because he couldn't fit in the time machine.

-Regarding Budokai 3, I recently got the game again, because I lost my original copy, but I noticed that it's the bilingual "Greatest Hits" version. However, I noticed that Launch no longer speaks in the Edit Skills mode (she still greets you when you enter and you also hear the sneezes), is that because of a cutback they had to make, in order to fit the Japanese voices into the game?

Possibly.

Plus, I don't think the original B3 has character portraits' mouths moving when they talked, as they do in the GH version.

Another of Akira Toriyama's creations. She's a main character in the manga series called Dr. Slump. She even makes an appearence in OG Dragon Ball and is one of the few who could actually ride on the Nimbus cloud. Oh and she's a (super powerful) robot.

For the record, Sabat's Recoome wasn't always that bad. During the pre-Budokai 3 (or maybe Budokai 2), he sounded more like Bluto, from Popeye. Why he didn't continue using THAT voice, is beyond me.

This is a series that someone made that takes a lot of stuff from dbz which you can notice immediately in a few scenes. The guy completely hand drew everything and used the actual voices from the sonic games to make them say what he wanted except for Nazo which he got someone to VA who isn't that bad. I figured if people here liked SMBZ they might like this series if it wasn't already posted up.

I wouldn't call them mistakes, so much as I would say that FUNimation just didn't give a shit about getting an accurate translation, and basically rewrote the show without regard to how much sense it made. Toei actually sent them English language scripts that basically got thrown in the trash upon arrival.

Ever notice how dubbed Dragon Ball has several credited English language writers?

I fail to see how that's failed logic. The Master Emerald was more powerful than him and apparently anything else, and since he was such a powermonger by nature, why leave such a threat in one piece, especially if others on the same planet had proven themselves capable of tapping into it?

Hell, it's better reason than any of the reasons that the three main DBZ villians wanted to destroy the world.

Freeza/Freezer blew up Namek and wanted to blow up the Earth both out of pure spite of Goku.

Cell wanted to blow up the damned planet because of ennui and arrogance.

Buu wanted to blow up the planet on impluse, which is why he managed to do what everyone else failed to do.

i still dont understand whats so funny about it? its just a minor mistake unless there is something else that i dont get

I posted the link.

If you can't see the humor in the melodramatic reactions of both Nappa and Vegeta, then I doubt you'll find it humorous.

Yeah I like how the music flowed soooo well too.

Yeah. I have to make sure to find it all of it before I forget today.

Actually it's something that DBZ used in the later (higher budget) fights like the legendary SSJ2 Goku vs Majin Vegeta fight. As they clashed they showed a full closeup 360 scrolling view of them trading blows. It's a nice animation effect that let's you feel the full scope of a melee.

The reason why I'm impressed is because it I realize that to do this effect on flash he had to manually draw the characters at different angles frame by frame, transitioning from front to back as they were attacking. To pull that off requires an excellent understanding of perspective.

To be honest, I'm not even sure why they put the Supreme Kai in there since he didn't do a god-damned thing during the Buu Saga but wet himself and accidentally help unleash Mystic Gohan's power.

I finished watching this about two hours ago, and I must say that above, I'm constantly amazed that Flash Series seem to actually have excellent conclusions when most TV productions, many movies, and a lot of novels just fall short (or fall long in some cases).

I posted the link.

If you can't see the humor in the melodramatic reactions of both Nappa and Vegeta, then I doubt you'll find it humorous.

Yeah. I have to make sure to find it all of it before I forget today.

For the sake of keeping this thread alive, I once again present to you the DBZ Movie Formula!!!

Note: This does not apply to every DBZ film, nor do these events have to occur in any particular order.

1) Peace and harmony is shattered by an unknown evil.

2) Some bad shit goes down.

3) Plot-revealing narrative is given by a character (usually King Kai), followed by the Z-Fighters going into action.

4) Z-Fighters square off against evil dude's minions, and usually get their asses handed to them.

5) HOLY CHILD ENDANGERMENT, BATMAN! GOHAN'S IN TROUBLE!!! HERE COMES PICCOLO TO THE RESCUE!!!

6) Everybody is down, but Goku, who unleashes mass amounts of ownage on evil minions.

7) Main bad guy jumps into action and proceeds to trade blows with Goku.

8) Main bad guy powers up and gives Goku some serious trouble.

9) Goku does something drastic in order to regain the upper hand and achieve victory.

10) Everyone is safe again; peace and harmony resumes.

-Other notable things include Krillin getting chumped out for lols and Vegeta occasionally taking Piccolo's place and helping Goku out.

DRAGON BALL FANS!!

I have a question to ak you. I don't think i've seen more than 5 episodes of either DB and DBZ, but I want to know, how good is it?

How good is it if I were to start watching now, from the beginning, the original DB? How do they hold up over time? Are there certain parts that are more shittier than others?

The reason I'm asking is because I'm trying to think of a long, engrossing "fighting" anime to show this girl (we've seen naruto, kenshin, etc.), and I know DBZ is all about fights, I just don't know if its good. And is it good for showing females? (Keep in mind she loves Naruto).

Is it impossible to go back and take DB seriously after having seen shit like the newer stuff that's out there, or does it still hold up even if you've never even seen it before?

Basically I'm asking you guys, just how good is DB/DBZ?

I'm looking for a variety of opinions so more than one answer would be appreciated. Thanks.

^Personally, if I were to recommend a long, engrossing fighting anime to someone, I'd go with Hajime no Ippo.

DB would be a good choice but I'm not sure about DBZ. DB is more of an adventure but still has plenty of fights and humor. DBZ can get repetitive but if she can make it through the Namek/Frieza arc then it gets better.

DB/DBZ is legendary. Is it even possible for it to die out? I personally enjoy the few early episodes DB where Goku and Krillin starts training under master roshi. DBZ got too dragged out, skip and few scenes/episodes and you're still set to go.

It's very good, but honestly, the comics are a lot better. The show is pretty much a straight adaptation, and the voice acting is really great in its original language, but the pacing is slow and bloated. There are also some idiotic filler episodes.

And DB and DBZ up through the end of the Freeza saga is probably your best bet for Dragon Ball. Beyond that, it gets a little dumb.

The Freeza Saga was good but I'm probably in the minoirty when I say that I certainly don't think it was the pinnacle of the Z series. To me, it seemed like it lost some of its juice as it wore on. Big whup if Freeza was the first OHNOEESSSTOOMUCH POWAAAAAAA!!!!!1111 villain. Cell had a far more interesting (if a bit too complex) backstory to him. Plus Gohan going Super Saiyan 2 and beasting on Cell is just too much. The music track that plays when Gohan loses it is so awesome. I admit that I like the songs with lyrcis in Japanese DBZ but the regular music just flat out sucks.

OG Dragon Ball is really good. Daniel-San, if you want to get into the series and save some money, I recommend picking up the manga. DB is 16 books. DBZ is 26 books. 42 books total $7.95 each. Of course if you're into reading your manga online, there's probably some place on the net where you can check out all the manga. Me, I've yet to find a site that has DB/DBZ manga. Plus, I'm one of those dudes who prefers manga in his hands as opposed to on the screen.

GT sucks. Don't go anywhere near.

Hokuto no Ken is pretty damn good and the 1st season is over 100 episodes.

Hajime no Ippo has the classic loser coming from nowhere to turning into a dangerous fighter

Dragonball to Dragonball Z is very good, but its a very long series and it definitely has its share of filler, but its worthwhile for anybody to watch as it is pretty much set the bar in terms of how you can compare power from different anime series.

Thanks for the responses.

Regarding Bleach: I watch it (up to 58 at the moment), but it doesn't do anything for me.

Yeah, I understand the DB/DBZ manga is probably the shit but keep in mind this is something for me to show to a female (and others if its really good), so it's not like she's going to want to sit with me and read a comic. Which is why I'm looking for anime only.

So from what I'm hearing, Dragon Ball is actually BETTER than Dragon Ball Z? Which is funny because coming from a huge anime fan like myself who has never really seen ANYTHING DB/DBZ related I always thought it was the other way around.

Thanks for the ideas on what eps not to watch. With long shows like this where there's bound to be shitloads of filler it's always good to know what you should skip. Is there anywhere I can go and get the comprehensive list of DB/DBZ episodes I should watch and the ones I should skip? Example, watch 1-75, 85- 140, 151-180, 200-231, etc. Or should I watch ALL of them up to a certain point and end the series early (like after the frieza or cell arc as some have suggested)?

Like Wikipedia tells you what Naruto/Bleach anime episodes are based on the manga and which ones are not (filler), so it's a handy little tool to see which eps need to be watched.

For DBZ, I'd suggest skipping the Garlic Jr. Saga but other than that, watch everything else. Even though Akira Toriyama himself wanted DBZ to end with the Cell Saga, The Buu saga still has memorable moments.

Also, look up the DBZ movies since those have great fight scenes too. You may want to avoid the 2nd and 3rd Broly movies though.

Then he wanted to end it with the Cell saga. Then he wanted to end it with the Buu saga. By then, he said, "Fuck it, you guys do whatever you want. I don't even care anymore." Hence, GT.

So from what I'm hearing, Dragon Ball is actually BETTER than Dragon Ball Z? Which is funny because coming from a huge anime fan like myself who has never really seen ANYTHING DB/DBZ related I always thought it was the other way around. It depends. If you're looking for a lighthearted action-oriented fantasy/comedy that gets sort of dark at the end, go with DB. If you're looking for a 100% action-focused sci-fi show with the occasional fantasy/comedy overtone, go with Z.

Ultimately, though, the addition of "Z" to the title is cosmetic. You can watch DB and Z as if it were all one continuous series. The tonal shift from light to dark, and from light action to heavy action all gradually occurs throughout. The only real reason you'd look at them as two separate entities is that Son Goku's origin is revealed at the beginning of Z, which simultaneously introduces sci-fi into the mix and downplays the earlier fantasy elements.

Good points (it's been awhile), but I thought it was the second form Frieza that he whooped up on?

First form Cell, he got cocky and let him get away to suck up more people and eventually become stronger than him in their rematch.

With Dr. Gero, don't really recall, but I think he let him get away as well to activate the androids.

Versus Android 17, though one of the best fights in Dbz history, he didn't have enough power to finish him off and prevent cell from absorbing him.

oh and the music is just terrible, why did they redo it in dbz, but then left the music in the original series (which was good), and yes piccolo has a cool theme which was destroyed by whoever was in charge of dubbing the english version. I mean the second cast that they got to do the voices were good however why they didn't use the original music is beyond me. A lot of characters have a theme song, even nimbus.

Jamie Chung has joined Justin Chatwin and James Marsters in Fox's "Dragonball," the live-action adaptation of the popular Japanese comic.

Chung will play Chi Chi, the love interest of Goku when he's growing up.

Man... looking back after all these years, Piccolo was really good at messing up, but Vegeta still owns the ultimate dumb ass title.

Cell Saga was filled with bitchy plot extensions.

- Piccolo could have finished off First Form Cell, but got dumb and Cell escaped, leaving him to absorb more people and get stronger.

- Vegeta could have finished off Second Form Cell, but his Saiyan pride prevented him (and Trunks) from finishing off Cell, allowing him to absorb No. 18

- Krilin could have prevented the Perfect Cell transformation had he pressed that damn red button to destroy No. 18. Instead, he got pussy whipped and destroyed the remote control instead.

But pretty much LAWL @ Vegeta and Krilin blaming each other afterwards.

Krillin: Hey guys couldn't we just like... search around for Dr.Gero before he completes Cell and win?

Z Fighters: STFU Krillin!!! You're NOT gonna ruin this for us!!!! Fuck You with your "Logic!!!" C'mon say that shit one more time... I dare ya!!! I triple dog dare ya!!! I swear to god....

As far as Goku having a love interest... it's really all about the food. Even after that, Goku is a horrible, horrible husband and father.

And I'd recommend watching all of DB, skipping the Garlic Jr saga in Z, and stay far, far away from GT. You might get frustrated with the long drawn out stuff in Z though. There are episodes where there's really only 5 minutes of actual new stuff while the rest consists of an a)stare down b)redundant flashbacks (maybe even stuff you've seen minutes before!) or c)regurgitated fighting sequences. Common shonen fare for an ongoing manga, I suppose.

And speaking of manga, anyone else holding out for the re-release next year? I really hope they don't screw it up this time.

Finally, I'd also recommend Hokuto no Ken (shit is fucking brutal) and One Piece. One Piece gets a higher recommendation because it's essentially the new Dragon Ball of this generation (literally and figuratively speaking). I'll save that rant for the pretty much dead One Piece thread.

You might wanna try Yuyu Hakusho and of course Inuyasha if those aren't 2 of the ones you've seen already. Inuyasha not your standard martial arts anime but it's more girl-friendly than most others.

DB is focused less on fights than DBZ, though the fights tend to have a bit more technique- fewer giant ki blasts and more "this is my secret special move and/or strategy" stuff. Overall DB is something a bit more like One Piece etc, more of an adventure thing +fights which moved toward the DBZ direction over time, obviously.

Thanks for all the great responses. At the very least, I'll give DBZ a chance since they're now releasing it by the sagas at very reasonable costs. I watched a couple YouTube clips to get a feel for it and it didn't seem like anything a female would take too kindly too, but then again that's hard to tell from a few clips.

Goku's Japanese VA is supposed to be a kid at heart, though Masako Nozawa (who also does Gohan and Goten) adds some bass as he goes into ssj forms. She, as well as the rest of the Japanese cast, adds distinct emotion and character that makes Goku, Goku. Wouldn't change it for the world.

However, this aspect doesn't translate well for an American audience. Even still, I'd much prefer a voice that is undeniably Goku and not a generic superhero voice. As well as VA's that can actually act, but now I'm nitpicking.

He's not supposed to sound like a huge musclebound superhero. When we first meet him, he's a 12 year old country bumpkin who's never seen a girl in his life. This is crucial to understanding the character. Throughout the series, his body grows up, but his mind stays the same. He is in a state of emotional arrested development, and he only really matures through his fighting technique.

Of course, thanks to FUNimation, most westerners will only see the show for what they turned it into: a mindless fighting cartoon.

I don't think anyone would have pegged any of the American VAs for "generic superheroes". Mind you, I would have liked it had Goku's voice gradually deepen over time, but how can you take a full-grown muscle-bound man in his 20s and beyond seriously if he sounds like a 12-year-old Japanese woman?

But you're still not going to get away from the fact that it's the same actor. The man-child voice fits the character, and can also be seen as the opportunity cost for consistency.

And the answer to your question is, you're not supposed to take him seriously, until he does something incredible. The voice enforces the dichotomy of the rather air-headed country boy and the amazing warrior he becomes when he's facing a powerful opponent.

Hmm...the original name of "Bulma" sounds interesting, especially considering what she named her children. (Though it does sound extremely risque to if you think about it in that respect.)

And about Bra's name, I think she was actually still called that in the DBGT dubs that aired on Cartoon Network. I remember knowing her name before that, though, so I may be wrong. However, I'm pretty sure it wasn't changed considered that she only really addressed in the entire two episodes where she wasn't under Baby's control.

P.S. It probably was "Bulla" though considering much American dubs overly censor everything.

It really doesn't seem very likely, and even if that were to happen, that's at least 5 years off. And really, there's only so many times you can re-release an old, old anime. What I'm hoping for is an actual redo of the anime series with better animation, less episodes. With the original Japanese voices. Time's a ticking, Masako Nozawa is already in her 70s...

Just copped Season 2 of DBZ. I missed a lot of this show when it was on (I watched the hell out of the "Next Dimension"/"OVER 9000!!!!" dub back in 95, but I really didn't see much past the whole Ginyu/Goku switch), and actually now I'm glad I didn't.

I LOVE the option to watch the dub with the OG Japanese BGM. (Call me weird, but trying to listen to the Japanese track throws me off a little. I usually watch anime with the dub track on, but with subtitles to see what they're REALLY supposed to be saying. I can't explain why, but that's just my preference.)

Anyway, I find it astounding that the simple act of changing the original background music makes DBZ a different show. Instead of a "I'm trying really, REALLY hard to be bad-ass" feel to the show, the show actually gains a lot of heart and feeling.

Anyway, Season 2 ends where I left off: Ginyu is a frog and Kuririn & Gohan are in Saiyan armor.

I only wish that FUNimation would give us the Ocean Group Dub that the UK got. I don't care about recycled (Super Fighitng Robot) Megaman BGMs or censorship, I just want to hear Brian Drummond as Vegeta, Scott McNeil as Piccolo & Terry Klassen as Kuririn again.

anyway,

He's been a perv since day one with teen Bulma. I'm surprised Android 18 didn't kill him right then and there.

Looks like it's from a movie, not sure which one i haven't seen many of them.

You need to watch the original series, he is a huge pervert, it's all he thinks about in his old age. :)

Also, i have seen that clip in english but I don't remember where.

I really never kept up on the DBZ fighters after the first one. BT3 has 161 Characters? I imagine that they are mostly all clones. And is it still insanely broken like the other games?

I just got copies of the first 2 seasons and i'm nearly done watching them. THERE IS SO MUCH SHIT THEY CUT OUT. I mean...I know dbz was butchered...but I just didn't know by how much. I finally got to see everything and just for the record I've been watching it in english just to see how funimation did with the voice acting and what not and then i'm gonna go back and watch everything in japanese. The only voices i've had problems with that didn't seem natural so far are Nappa, Recoome, Jeice and Guldo...probably because I'm comparing them to their Ocean's dub counterpart. The picture is so crisp on the dvd's. It's kinda cool that they went this far for the show in the whole cleaning and everything.

Is it just me, or is it really hard to find FUNimation's releases of Dragon Ball?

Perhaps they're just waiting for the rights to release their dub of the 1st 13 episodes and then they'll release it.

Also, why are FUNimation's dubs horribly inaccurate for what the original is actually saying?

Because they took MAD liberties with the license, and also didn't bother thinking ahead to see whether or not any lines spoken would conflict with future episodes. Such as Goku's father being a scientist, who invented the Artificial Full Moon technique, and another lovely piece of failure, courtesy of Terry Klassen and Christopher Neel (who were the head writers for seasons 1-4, I believe)......

THE SEASON FOUR CONTINUITY SCREW-UPS!!!

Trunks said that Dr. Gero was the leader of the Red Ribbon Army, which is a big, steaming load! Also, they said that the assassin Tao Pai Pai was NOT an assassin, but they said that he was a general in the RR Army! However, when they dubbed Dragonball (which was a much better dub than DBZ and DBGT, though I hear it's missing some inserted vocal tracks), they said that Tao was an assassin/mercenary. That really bugs the crap out of me. Between the RR Army continuity errors, King Cold's gay-ass voice, Chris Sabat making Yamcha sound like a sniveling bitch-boy coward 24/7 (yeah, I know he was scared in the Japanese version, but not piss-my-pants scared), and the inappropriate music that played during Trunks's encounter with Frieza, you could say that my experience with season four was unpleasant.

What's strange is that they haven't fixed the General Tao error, because he's still called that in the Tenkaichi series. My guess is that FUNi considers DB and DBZ to be separate licenses, hence some slight differences in names (i.e. Tien in DBZ and Tien Shinhan in DB).

What's even stranger is that, while FUNi still hasn't fixed all of their earlier writing goof-ups in the remastered sets, they treat every other show under their belts--that ISN'T DB-related--like fine china! Take the new One Piece dub for example...... IT'S BLOODY INCREDIBLE!!! They've even changed the attacks back to their original names! The only thing wrong is that Cartoon Network is asking for consistency with character names (Zolo, Chaser, Trace, etc.) for the sake of the 4Kids dub viewers and that they're being pricks, flashing out the contact frames for many of the attacks! Thank God we'll be getting uncut DVDs and uncut Unlimited Adventure for the Wii for our troubles!

After watching what i've seen so far in the uncut...jeezus christ... Is there anyone more lecherous than Roshi!?

A MISERABLE PILE OF WORDS!!!

I think you're getting Ocean's dub mixed up with Funimation...Ocean's dub was the one that said that Goku was a brilliant scientist and all that jazz. Funimation definitely fixed that error when i watched that fight. I'm still unsure of how far off Funimation is from what is actually said which is why i'm gonna watch everything over again in japanese with subs when i'm done. Has the season 4 uncut box come out yet?

Yeah, I know that the moon scene was from the Saban era and it has since been fixed, but FUNi is still in charge of DBZ and they should have had some say over script approval and stuff. Either way, it was still a huge boo-boo.

And make no mistake, FUNimation fucked with the script for every single episode. You will rarely find an accurately translated line throughout the entirety of American Dragon Ball Z.

I'll find that out soon enough when i go back through it in japanese. And that whole thing about the funimation actually hiring out to oceans I didn't know about because I assumed that Funimation and Oceans were were 2 entirely different companies...because of that I was thinking of the fact that other companies can't do anything with the series without funimation's permission. And seeing as how funimation as their own voice actors...I didn't think they'd have a need to liscense out. You sure Ocean's wasn't under Saban or something?

It's a comaprison between Ocean's and Funi's dub versions............the lines are virtually identical.

I overall like Ocean's dub better.

Despite my ranting, I still enjoy the DBZ dub. It's just that the crappy writing really annoys me sometimes. The crappy writing, crappy voices, and the crappy music is what annoys me. All taken together, it kills the sense of fantasy and adventure, so the only reason to even watch it is the fighting--which, by itself, I don't find especially exciting.

The majority of the crappy reputation that DBZ has in the States is the result of changes made by FUNimation.

Here's how it goes......

-Ocean is a voice recording studio in Canada that provided the voice actors for DBZ (Viz uses them for MANY dubbing jobs). When FUNi relocated to Ft. Worth, TX, they had to hire a whole new cast and work cheap, since they could no longer afford the Ocean VAs.

-FUNimation is a small children's entertainment company turned anime licensing giant that possesses the DBZ anime license. I don't know of their origins, but DBZ was pretty much the thing that put them on the radar.

-Saban is a television distribution company/children's entertainment company, who brought Super Sentai to the US, in the form of Power Rangers. They also helped FUNi put DBZ on the air in syndication. Unfortunately, they held them on a short leash, censorship-wise.

I don't know who owns the rights to the alternate dub which continues to use the Ocean voice actors, but I DO know that they can't say words which directly reference "death" and "killing," and they recycled the music from that crappy Mega Man cartoon.

So for everyone who has a soft spot for Scott McNeil and Brian Drummond, there is more out there.

I honestly prefer the dub of dbz.....same as the rest of my anime
dub is the way to go!

However, OceanGroup dub is gay
why the hell are there two different dubs anyway?

Funi dub is much more convincing
and Vegeta is much more badass to me

The Ocean dub he sounds so lame and wannabe tough guy
It's not even for real to me.

Oh gawd oh fukin god listen to Trunks
