EDIT: Renamed...
CHAAAAAAAAANGE NOOOOOOOOWWWW!!!
Just copped Season 2 of DBZ. I missed a lot of this show when it was on (I watched the hell out of the "Next Dimension"/"OVER 9000!!!!" dub back in 95, but I really didn't see much past the whole Ginyu/Goku switch), and actually now I'm glad I didn't.
I LOVE the option to watch the dub with the OG Japanese BGM. (Call me weird, but trying to listen to the Japanese track throws me off a little. I usually watch anime with the dub track on, but with subtitles to see what they're REALLY supposed to be saying. I can't explain why, but that's just my preference.)
Anyway, I find it astounding that the simple act of changing the original background music makes DBZ a different show. Instead of a "I'm trying really, REALLY hard to be bad-ass" feel to the show, the show actually gains a lot of heart and feeling.
Anyway, Season 2 ends where I left off: Ginyu is a frog and Kuririn & Gohan are in Saiyan armor.
I only wish that FUNimation would give us the Ocean Group Dub that the UK got. I don't care about recycled (Super Fighitng Robot) Megaman BGMs or censorship, I just want to hear Brian Drummond as Vegeta, Scott McNeil as Piccolo & Terry Klassen as Kuririn again.

subtitles are no more accurate than dubs, because it's still a TRANSLATION, yo.

^Yeah, but Funimation mistranslated A LOT of stuff, and liberally added lines as well. There were a lot of serious moments that got turned into slapstick in the Funi dub.
...But I'm betting this thread will be closed in favor of the anime thread anyway.

The Best Fights of the Entire Series were:
1. Vegeta vs. Recoome
2. Krillen, Pic, Gohan, Tien, and Chaotzu vs. Nappa

see, there's just too much stuff out I want to buy. I still don't have the first season yet, now I have to get season 2 as well. The first one is more important to me, as I think that saiyan saga was better....that first Vegeta VA and Zarbon were the best out of the entire show.
I'm curious...did the first season include Radditz? ...that wasn't really a high point for me. Radditz = lame....especially compared to everything else that happened after him.

I agree,Raditz was lame...
Anyway,I heard Funimation really fucked up with Vegeta's death and didn't keep it consistent because when he got shot by Frieza he was supposed to die.I never understood that part.Did h dies when the planet exploded,or did Gohan take him back to the ship?

Vegita died shortly after Freezer shot him.........He basically died in Goku's arms.
Vegita was resurrected after Dende made the wish to bring back all the people Freezer killed to life.
Another thing..........I didn't know Ocean dubbed the whole DBZ series. I was watching the episode where Buu arrived at Kami's place. The music sucked as usual..........
I still feel that Ocean >> Funi's dub. Scott McNeil is on fire.

what i hated about the dbz dub post-ocean group is the raspy voices. they kinda had this california surfer dude irritability about them. it's been a while since i've seen the dbz dub so i probably don't know what i'm talking about.

There's plenty of clips of the Ocean dub on YouTube. I've heard stories about an alternate English dub that continued to use the Ocean Studios voice actors, but I've never found any until YouTube came along. Well, all the stories are true, but this alternate dub ended up recycling background music from that crappy old Mega Man cartoon!
Anyway, here's some clips.
Super Buu arrives at Kami's Lookout (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ebXGCWqo9s)
Vegeta self-destructs against Majin Buu (Brian Drummond as Vegeta) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7TYxS8pyWE)
Android #18 owns Vegeta (WARNING: Extremely sucky Trunks voice ahead) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IY01lcIpsRA) - FACT: #18 is voiced by that black chick from House of the Dead. Don't believe me? Go check imdb!
The Androids discuss how they monitored Goku (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMz7bTazA2Q)
Vegeta vs. #19 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5Kzl-SQyYg) - They can't use words involving death in the show, so Vegeta can't say "Never say die!"

I have always preffered Freezia to all theo other villians, because when he start going through multiple transformations that shit was original. Also the entire Namek Saga while long, the story did give more than one or two characters moments to shine. Even if it was only for like two seconds.

I hate it when people say this, because it just doesn't take the whole picture into account.
The only thing I can really say is - if The Simpsons were to age 10 years, would you accept anyone other than Nancy Cartwright playing Bart Simpson? Would it be weird to keep her on as the voice she has literally defined?
That is why the Japanese voices sound strange at first.

different strokes for different folks, i mean i'm all japnese when watching anime, but lets be honest .. goku voice in japnesse sucks.... but i do understand what your saying alot people on here think kenshin dub was great.. i'm like wtf!!! kenshin dub voice alone is one of the worse i have ever heard.
my own question is how bad is the picture and animation in these sets i heard alot of conflicting reports.

Yes.
Well, if Nancy Cartwright could age her voice from a 10-year-old boy to a 20-year-old man and keep it there consistently, then I'd rather her still be around, but I honestly don't think that's possible.
Anyway, I think that the English dub of DBZ suffers because they pulled the plug early on Dragon Ball (after only the Pilaf saga), so between DB and DBZ in the US, we never met Kuririn, Lunch (who initially got cut from the US series), Uranai Baba, Hacchan, Arale (Dr. Slump the manga is being published here now, but I don't know if the anime will ever get picked up), Tenshinhan (who was strangely called Tien), Tao Pai Pai (Who became "General Tao" in the dub), Chaozu, Tsuru-sennin, Yajirobe, Piccolo Daimao and "Ma Jr."
Thus, in the Saiyan saga, Yamcha, Tenshinhan, Chaozu, & Yajirobe are nameless jobbers and Piccolo was always a good guy, just a little grumpy. Also of note is how they changed Piccolo's dialogue to be more sympathetic to Gohan as opposed to "I can't wait to kill you, you know." and "I'm only helping to save the world because I want it for myself."
Switching gears to dub comparison:
While Justin "Yusuke Uramehsi" Cook's Raditz was bearable, he's nothing compared to Jason "Joe Higashi/Yusuke Godai" Gray-Stanford's Raditz.
And in terms of Goku's voices, my order of preference is:
Ian Corlett
Sean Schemmel
Kirby Morrow (Seems to be the next logical choice for Ian Corlett roles, since he doesn't do dubs anymore)
Peter Kelamis (fucking terrible, though to his credit, his screams are pretty close to Masako Nozawa's)

I used to think Dragon Ball was good until I started watching real anime.
You don't need three or four episodes to do one fight. Yeah, those fight scenes were ridiculous, a bad guys sits back while the heroes "train" or level up against lesser opponents.
Meanwhile the bad guy says like three lines the entire episode and before you know it we have a lame-ass To Be Continued. It took me a few months to to realize this and say to myself, "what the fuck was that?"

What I mean is that back in 1995, the first 13 eps and the first movie of Dragon Ball were dubbed an aired on syndicated TV. Most of you never saw it because it was on at like 5:30 on Saturday morning. It didn't do too well (I wonder why...), so FUNimation skipped ahead to the more action-oriented Dragon Ball Z (Dragon Ball was more comedy and gag-oriented up until the Piccolo Daimao saga)
It's literally skipping from Chapter 2 in a book to Chapter 17 (The corresponding chapters of the manga.)

but the goku's japanese voice is deffinetly db fan service

the greatest scene in all of dbz is gohan going ssj2 in japanese.

There wasn't supposed to be a Buu saga originally. Wasn't supposed to be a Cell Saga either IIRC, since I heard that Toriyama wanted to stop after Frieza(but the fans wanted it to keep going or something).
As far as the sub/dub issue goes, I watched them when they first started on CN with some friends in college, but then we got some imported tapes of sub DBZ and watched ahead lol. I liked both versions of it because they were different interpretations of it(Dub was very hard edged and tense all the time, while the Sub was more...humanitarian and showed more drama). I guess it's mostly due to the music.
Anyway, which release of the DVDs would I need to get the Ocean Group dubbings plus the original japanese track?(since the dubbing in the new ones suck.)

Cell probably was the best villain of the series, buu (fat buu) was the funniest
my fav saga was the cell saga followed closely by the buu saga, it woulda been better if some of the ideas for buu werent rip offs of the cell saga like him bein able to regenerate and comin back to life after near death...but overall i enjoyed both of em
i didnt care for the garlic jr saga

 I have to definatly say the android/cell saga was the best,
-It had future trunks
-Goku didn't save the world someone else did
-NO spirit bomb! (that is seriously used too much it's in almost every movie (or some variation of it) and used on every major villian goku fights as a finisher (vegeta, freeza, Buu) and it takes way too long/episodes to actually use.
-Gohan stopped wining and became raw
-Piccalo (at a point) was the strongest/best warrior on the planet
-this series is not as predictable as the others
-vegeta gets his arm broken
-Goku Dies and stays dead for at least 7 years
-Freeza gets sliced and diced and his father is killed
-THE HUMANS ACTAULLY DID SOMETHING AND MATTERED (Tein,Yamcha,Krillin)
-the whole alternate time line where just about everyone is dead except F. trunks
there is a lot more but I don't feel like typing for that long

Dragon Ball is the best of all, the things i didnt like about dbz is that it deosnt mention alot about human characters (yamcha, tien, krillin, roshi, chowsu) as it goes further toward the end..they should be consistant through out the series, the series also it lacks humor, and i felt bad for yamcha, his role was good in DB, but weak in DBZ, i mean he always the first one that get killed in the battle, lost his girlfriend Bulma to vegeta, then gave up on fighting..and i probably i only one who doesnt like vegeta..

My favorite saga would have to be the Saiyan saga because there was
more hand to hand combat rather than just throwing around fireballs and teleporting around. You also get to see all of the original dbz group fighting (chaotzu, tien, yamcha all get less airplay from this point on)

even though i hate pretty much everything about japan, i gotta say, dbz is awesome. it goes against everything i hate in anime:
mainly, the main characters are not girly elfish skinny wussies with purple hair. hell no, these are BLUE EYED, BLOND HAIRED, MUSCULAR ASS KICKERS, THAT PULL NO PUNCHES AND BEAT THE CRAP OUT OF EACH OTHER.
anyway, even cosplayers (http://www.twango.com/media/jie.cosplay/jie.10433) cant ruin it
but seriously, did they really need to nerf/rape/pwn gohan so badly in the buu saga? cmon now.
oh the main thing that pissed me off of any akira toriyama shit is his blatant racism.

Since Bulma was the head female of the series, they pared them together for more ideals to introduce Trunks.

I hate it when people say this,
I also hate to hear that cuz you know they're really just talking about Goku, Kuririn, Oolong and Gohan, but saying "everybody" for some reason. Everyone else sounds like an adult. And Vegita does indeed sound like royalty, unlike his (and Piccolo's) "my throat's sore from deep-throating guys" dub voice. In the original, most of the characters sound like real voices you'd probably hear on the street in Japan with the exception of the characters I mentioned earlier. In the dub, they ALL sound like silly cartoon voices, no matter how serious the dialogue, and all the kid characters are OBVIOUSLY done by women, who are probably just using their normal voices, unlike their japanese counterparts, who are "pulling a Cartwright" (woman doing a young male voice and actually SOUNDING like a young male). That's the main thng that killed the dub for me: I was hearing mocking effigies of the characters I once thought were cool (another thing mainstreaming has killed for me).

You wanna know what's good about GT? And this is the japanese version: Dan Dan Kokoro Hikareteku, Don't You See, Hitori Janai...and the final japanese episode. For a shitty spinoff series (and believe me, the american version was even worse) the final ep was fuckin' triumphant. I don't know how the american dub final ep is, or even if they used the original japanese ep, or just ended the series in the same ep the last fight ended cuz I couldn't stand it. With a few cut scenes and eps here and there, and the "awesome" (*snort*) va's from DBZ, they turned trash...into shit.

DBZ = Best Shonen Anime evar. Act like you fuckin know.
I'm sorry, but the Japanese version rocks the dub so hard. Masako Nozawa has some incredible voice control. Yeah, when she's being silly and shit, she's all high pitched, but listen to her when Goku's actually being badass (i.e Super Saiyan 3 for the first time). Her voice drops like a whole octive. It's incredible. Vegeta's Japanese voice is too slick. And dear lord Freeza. Goes from a creepy transvestite who's been smoking it's whole life in the dub to one of the scariest, craziest mutherfuckers ever.
Warning for all of you thinking of picking up the DVD sets: They are Widescreen. This is a fullscreen series. That means they have been cropped. A lot of times it's not too noticable, but sometimes...gah. No clue why FUNi did this.

Warning for all of you thinking of picking up the DVD sets: They are Widescreen. This is a fullscreen series. That means they have been cropped. A lot of times it's not too noticable, but sometimes...gah. No clue why FUNi did this.Actually, the show was originally produced in an aspect ratio somewhere between widescreen and fullscreen. I am not certain why Toei chose to do this.
The original DBZ prints have deteriorated. FUNimation was able to fix them for the most part, but the tops and bottoms of each frame were damaged beyond repair. When confronted with the choice of either cropping the left and right sides (as per usual with the T.V. broadcasts) or the top and bottom, they chose the latter. Though slightly more of the frame was lost than cropping the other way, this at least enabled them to both solve the problem of damaged prints and include anamorphic enhancement.
Keep in mind, Dragon Ball ended 10 years ago. Though these episodes are just now getting released on remastered DVDs, the prints themselves have been sitting in a warehouse in Japan for over a decade. Some things are not built to last.
And anyone who chooses the dub version is at least a little bit fruity. The subtitles are translated about as closely as they're going to get (thanks to a superb translator that they should have fucking employed for the dub in the first place), so there's no reason not to watch the Japanese version.

I like Radditz. Only good parts of the Buu Saga where:
Raditz never actually did a move called Double Sunday. They just gave him moved named after days of the week for some reason.
I'm still to this day wondering how Vegeta's Final Flash didn't finish Cell off and only destroyed his upper right torso. The blast shaved off the northwestern hemipshere and pretty much tore the Ozone Layer a new one.
Which version of Cell did Vegeta shoot a Final Flash at? A Cell Jr. hax'd by grabbing a Final Flash blast and punting it away (IIRC). If it wasn't Perfect Cell I say it should've taken out more of him.

Unmei no Hi is a good song, but other then that I can't speak for the rest of the Japanese music. I grew into the American music, except some songs did get repetitive (someone pointed out to me that there's usually music playing at all times, which explains why it felt so repetitive).
I liked both DB and DBZ, but unfortunately I have yet to watch the entirety of both series. I still need to see past the Red Ribbon Army saga in DB and the Radditz/Saiyan sagas in DBZ :\
Edit: I'd like to say that Vegeta really needed more victories. Honestly, he jobs in almost all his fights with anyone. Since he's unfortunately forced to be a step down to Goku, he still doesn't get too much opportunity to prove himself.

Re: Japanese Voices
The thing is, America started with DBZ, with all of the characters already grown up. DB was an afterthought, like "Hey, see how it all started!" But in Japan, everything started with Dragon Ball.
Goku, of course was a little kid. He was given a voice appropriate for a little boy. Yes, he was voiced by a woman, but hell, that's an industry norm for any country (Kid Gohan's VA's have been female in the English dubs...). Through the course of the series, Goku aged. There was one episode in DB where, literally, they skip 3 years, and Goku goes from being a little boy to the grown man we know him as. I suppose they could have switched out the VA for Goku to a guy, but believe me when I say that this would have gone over HORRIBLY. The VA for Kid Goku, Masako Nozawa, defined the role. She WAS Goku. Anything else would not have been acceptible. If you watch the show from the beginning of DB, as Japanese people did, it's just the most natural, most expected thing.
It also represents a side of Goku that was lost in the dubbing. Even though he gets bigger and stronger throughout the series, in many ways he doesn't change a whole lot from the time he was introduced in DB - he's still just a big, innocent, country-bumpkin kid at heart. Again, if you've watched the show from DB, it all makes sense.
I started on the dub myself, then switched to the Japanese version when I found Psaros's Uncensored site and saw just how much the show had been changed. At first, Goku's voice didn't quite sit right with me either. But eventually, I got used to it. And when I did watch DB from the start, that voice just became Goku - I can't imagine any other voice for the character.
Unlike many otaku, I don't think that the English dub should have tried to copy the voice Nozawa provided for the character. I can understand why they would move away from that, especially considering that American audiences hadn't been following the story from the start. And I don't want people to prefer or even like the Japanese VA's over the American ones. I just hate it when people say "The Japanese VA's suck, why does Goku sound like a girl!" without knowing the whole story.

man i dont understand why gundam continued to make their sequal up till today, but not DB/DBZ when it got more fans, support and profit out of it...i want more DB/DBZ!!!Toriyama wanted to end DB with the destruction of Namek. That's why most of the main characters were dead and Gohan was the Z-Warrior left to defend Earth. However, he was persuaded ($$$) to stay on, so he cooked up some technicalities to keep the series going. Then he wanted to keep Gohan as the main character and retire Goku, hence the end of the Cell saga. But once again, he was persuaded ($$$) to bring Goku back for the Buu saga. Finally, Toriyama insisted on ending the series once that was over.
Then, of course, Toei decided they wanted to do more episodes of the show--which Toriyama agreed to, though he didn't want to do anymore issues of the comic and would only do character designs for the show. It turned out VERY awful, and they rightly ended the series in 1997.
Perhaps that's why the Freeza saga is my favorite. It's the last one that really gelled with the series, and wasn't just tacked on to make more money. And I really can't see the wisdom in pushing the series even further at this point.

I know. The Harmony Gold dub. They only did one season (I think), and you're right, it used to air like Saturdays at 5AM.
They only did the one season, and then Funimation picked up DBZ and under the Pioneer's supervision, dubbed it up to halfway through the Freeza Saga. Much like the Harmony Gold dub, it was plagued with horrible/inconsistant airtimes. Not to mention that the show would frequently re-start from "The Arrival of Raditz" whenever Funi ran out of dubbed episodes. Pretty much, the only people who watched were the people who already knew about the show. And all these people hated it for the vast changes it made from the original Japanese version.
DBZ didn't catch on until CN picked it up and gave it a GREAT timeslot, everyday weekday at 5. This is where the show finally picked up steam, and attracted new viewers in America. However, as I said before, these people all came into the show on DBZ - they'd never seen, much less heard of, Dragon Ball. Funi went back and dubbed DB (didn't they?) but it was more of an afterthought. In America, Dragon Ball IS DBZ.
I personally like DB > DBZ. The fights were a lot better - less "I need to over-power you!" and more emphasis on actual fighting/techniques.

Az, you forgot about FUNi's original DB dub (Summer 1995-96), which was done years after Harmony Gold. It was distributed by Seagull Entertainment. Yes, the same company that previously helped DiC put Sailor Moon on the air in the states.
They only did one season of that. Unfortunately, this was because anime was originally looked at as mere filler for syndicated cartoon lineups, thus it was canned after the first 13 episodes (Krillin was supposed to show up in the very next ep)! FUNi decided to bring DBZ over early, banking on it as a sure-fire hit.
The rest is history.
Here's the intro to said DB dub! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZzz6bEGZeA)
*EDIT* I'd like to add that the manga is better overall. If only the anime was paced as well as it was......
*EDIT* I wonder if FUNi ever released those first 13 eps uncut and uncensored? That's all depending on whether or not Vidmark's family entertainment label, Kidmark ever lost the video distribution rights to those eps.

Speaking of that song, I saw randomly on MTV Japan some pop singer had done a re-make of the song...and she even re-created the scenes from the DB ending animation in her video! They had her with the Bulma hairtsyles, looking out the rainy window, riding the motorcycle, in the Capsule House...she even had a dragon radar.
It was...surreal.
That dub of DB was actually sorta good. It was clearly censored beyond belief, though they did manage to keep in a few good jokes...like Oolong discovering that Goku in drag wasn't a girl by watching him pee etc, but I liked the music and the voices and the presentation. I was one of relatively few who watched that first dub season of DB before seeing DBZ, and I though Dragon Ball was the shit.

The eventual jump from DB first couple of episodes to DBZ beginnings was jarring as fuck. Although it did sort of make me appreciate the DB episodes better when I eventually got to see them.
IMO, as a whole DB > DBZ >>> DBGT.
Anyone else think that Goku was a douche after watching DBZ. I loved the kid in DB, but after the Cell game begins he becomes the series biggest asshole.
As cool as it was seeing Gohan kick ass at the end of the Cell Saga, Goku's reasoning for staying dead was weak. Hell, it was a bit of dick move to transport Cell to King Kai's planet to begin with.
It only got worst in the Buu saga. Him not killing off Buu when he had the chance, mutiple times and him abandoning his family (for the second or third time) to train Uub at the end. Dude went from being my favorite to the nigga I hate to see on the screen.
GT was just an abomination and is probably the reason we haven't seen anyone else try to tackle picking up a new DBZ series either set in the future or during the time gaps.

Yeah, Toriyama REALLY wanted to shift the focus on Gohan, but the fans just weren't having it - they still loved Goku. It's why Goku always seems to peace out for awhile, but then ultimately come back and save the day.
In the Japanese version, Goku ditching everybody is just a part of his child-like character. You know he never grew up, so its plausible. Like at the end of DBZ when he leaves to go train Uubu, he's just like "cool strong new opponent whee!!!!" and all the other characters are like "WHAT THE FU- ah, classic Goku!" In the dubbed version - yeah, he's just an asshole. Things lost in translation I suppose.

I have Super DBZ. It's not bad, but kinda linear. I also have Sparking Neo! (what's the title in America?) which I like as a 1P game, not sure how it stacks up as 2P. But Neo's probably my favorite DBZ game.

Thats the main reason why i hated Buu saga with a passion. That saga should have ended with Gohan,Goten and Trunks saving the day. Not Goku and his deux ex machina the Spirit bomb.

Anyway, is Budokai 3 the best DBZ game for PS2? Interested in "getting" it.
I would say it's either that or Super DBZ. Budokai 3 is actually pretty damn fun, especially with the character customization through capsules. It may not be the most deepest and technical fighter, but it sure is a blast to go through capsules to see what kind of nice combinations you can make up.
Super DBZ is alright too, but I think it just needed a bit more polish. Feels way too clunky to me. It really could use a sequel or a revision..

whats so good about budokai 3? after i played budokai 1-2 i kinda gave up on the series and thought the control scheme was wack...(pppe for moves, no flight etc..)
but last year i went and got the budokai tenkaichi 2 and loved it, the controls were great, easy to learn, and it was actually like it is on the show, good combos, teleports during fights and everything
i always hear that budokai 3 is good but was scared to try it.... does that game differ much from budokai 1 and 2?
and how does it stack up to budokai tenkaichi 2?

Yeah, but did it seem to anyone else that he almost kept trying to end the series even before Cell game? I mean the way most of the storyarcs ended it almost felt like they kept pushing him to do more and up the ante until by the time DB ended we got DBZ, which starts out with Goku dying. Obviously it couldn't end like that completely but even the end of the first saga had Goku not actually beat Vegeta completely.
But maybe that is just me.

Raditz never actually did a move called Double Sunday. They just gave him moved named after days of the week for some reason.
This was a FUNimation created move.
Basically, they made DB: Budokai and wanted to put Raditz in it (even though his whole purpose in it was to job to the heroes, it's like putting in Ninja Murasaki, which would actually fucking rock if they made an original Dragon Ball fighting game, but anyway...).
However, Raditz was only in like 6 episodes so he had no moves. So they gave him one in the game and called it Double Sunday.
Then FUNimation redubbed the first few epsiodes of DBZ, strangely completely re-using the original script, which was waaaaay the fuck off (though taking out the whole "Next Dimension" thing and the "Home for Infinite Losers", because characters in a kids' show can't die and they sure as hell can't go to... umm... hell...). Seeing as Raditz now had a move name, they decided that he was going to "do" this move now.
Kind of like having Kylie Minogue kick a guy in SFTM and calling it the Cannon Spike (yeah, I know it was called "Thrust Kick" in the movie, shut up.)

Well, as previously stated before, the series was supposed to end after the Freeza/Frieza saga (BTW, DBZ came out at around the same time as Batman & Robin, hence FUNimation/Saban spelling it the way they did).
Thus, Goku was supposed to be the one and only Legendary Super Saiyan. However, since the series was continued, things like making Vegeta, Trunks, Gohan, et al Super Saiyans came up.
Then, the series was supposed to be all about Gohan, what with him being the first to go SSJ2 and Goku dying again, but the fans wouldn't have that, so Goku came back to life and went SSJ3.
Then, Dragon Ball (Z) ended, and the fans wouldn't have THAT, hence the abomination known as DBGT.
So, to all of you who complain that companies don't listen to the fans, see what happens when they do?

Well, think about it: Why would a Japanese company care about what an American consumer thinks unless the product is intended to be international?
For example, Guile was put in Street Fighter II because Capcom wanted to "appeal to the American player" (partly because SF1 was more popular in the US than in Japan, though before SFII, I'd never heard of Street Fighter...)
However, mangaka and anime companies produce stories and shows that would appeal to Japanese consumers. Name me one anime made with the intent to be international. (On the flip side, name me one US movie, TV show or comic that's intended to be international...)
Also, wouldn't most US companies listened to their fans, wouldn't we also get bombarded by porn?
Wouldn't we get an episode of Family Guy where Brian actually gets to nail Lois?
Wouldn't there be an episode of Friends where Monica, Rachel and Phoebe just wrestle around in baby oil (and don't speak)?
Wouldn't have Samuel L. Jackson completely pwned the Star Wars prequel trilogy, causing A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back & Return of the Jedi to instantly become non-canon?
Wouldn't Freakazoid get more than 2 seasons?

Yeah, it is a bastard move for a 40 year old guy to do...but for Goku, it's believeable since he does have that child-like personality.
Goku was always like that. He agreed to marry Chi Chi thinking marriage was just an event where he could eat a lot, and when he found out what marriage actually was he was like "Ah, fuck it - I can't go back on my promise!" Then Kami tries to make him into the new God of the Earth, and Goku was like "Hell no, I don't want that responsibility!"
Despite becoming so damned powerful, at heart Goku never really grew up at all. You watch Dragonball, and it's Goku as a kid. You watch DBZ, and it's the exact same Goku, just with a bigger body. That's one of the things that the dubbing kinda failed to capture.

We dipped into Bizzaro World for a second there....because One Piece is ugly as a pig's ass...maybe the manga itself is better visually, but I already doubt that. Yeah, I can't resist the cheap shot at One Piece....I always have to take the opportunity.
It's interesting how the massive hate died down once DBZ stopped being the most popular anime in the U.S....back in the old SRK days....DBZ was like Halo. One mention of it...just in passing....that would result in the next 17 people chiming in about how much DBZ(the dub of course, because everything from Japan is a flawless, blessed gift from God Himself, ya know.) sucks. Now, a DBZ thread only gets a few hateful comments.
The next mega popular show, Naruto---I'm genuinely surprised that the hate bandwagon there is so weak and small. I thought surely at least 80% of the folks from the old Naruto threads would go on constant hilarious tirades about how it sucks now because it happened to make it to U.S. television.....I'm actually rather disappointed in the lack of otaku-fanboy hatred.

The one thing i like about Naruto is that everyone has the opportunity to beast on someone at some point. When i look back at DBZ Tien,Yamcha,Krillian, and Piccolo kinda fell to the wasteside while Goku was the one that saved the day which is fine but it kinda sucks to me.
When i watch Naruto and see someone like Neiji or Shikamaru fightin the Sound Four its interesting to watch cause i know obviously Naruto isn't gonna jump in and save the day like Goku and plus u get to see some potential in alot of the side characters.
Plus i actually like the Naruto dub alot. Gotta love Steven Blum as Orochimaru.

At what point does Young goku turn into older adult goku when he marries chi chi, and before DBZ is made? that was part of the DragonBALL arc right? how many episodes was dragonball anyway before dragonball Z was made?
I would love to see the original Dub or DB and then DBZ if possible.... also, does anyone know if they are dubbed, is DB AND DBZ unedited and uncensored? if not, can i get the next best thing and find it subbed? but thats a last resort kind of thing. i just want to see them in order and uncut, original dub, or at least, subbed. anywhere i can watch them online / buy them for cheap?

Guess I'm the only one who enjoyed the Bardock movie. . . . even if Akira Toriyama didn't make it. . .
Yeah, but Toriyama did have a large hand in its creation. In fact, he made it canon by drawing Frieza have a two-panel flashback about a Saiyan (Bardock) who had the balls to oppose him.

Oh yeah how'd I forget about that. . . .wasn't that the only one one he ever did that for. . .?

They re-released DVDs for season 1 and 2. You should check it out.

During the Android Saga, he also did a short manga version of 'History of Trunks,' where Trunks was already a Super Saiyan and I believe Gohan was missing his arm, as well. Gohan dies much like in the animated version, but obviously, his death didn't trigger Trunks's first SS transformation, because he was already one.
*EDIT* That OP/DBZ crossover was originally aired in Japan, aboard the Going Merry replica, which features souvenir shops and, of course a theater. Heh, even Goku couldn't lay a hand on Enel, which shows how broken Logia Devil Fruit users are (unless you find their weakness).

I saw them in stores already, with season 2 having vegeta on the cover? ive heard the new dubbing in those dvds, i hated it. Is there any way to watch those uncut with the original first dubbing? if not, does anyone know where all the episodes are with the Og dubs? uncut or not.

Goku gets older by the end of DB and marries Chi Chi at the end of the series- there's some filler episodes at the end before DBZ starts of some adventures they have, or something. Dragon Ball was like 160-something (?) eidpsodes.
DB DVDs I have seem pretty much censored, though the dub has some censorship/dialogue changes...you could just put on the subtitles, though. DBZ had an uncut DVD version release, though I don't know if that's the same as the more recent full-season DVD releases.
edit: ah, nevermind. If you're looking for uncut + OG voices, I think you're SOL.

DB is 168 episodes, if memory serves, and DBZ is 291.
I find it funny that people run up to Chris Sabat at conventions, asking him to say "IT'S OVER 9000!!!" when it wasn't even him who originally said it.Ryo Horikawa will always be Vegeta, but I have a soft spot for Brian Drummond. He was fucking weird.

Rhio, remember when I mentioned that Trunks had a special theme for his first Super Saiyan transformation in the last DBZ thread that was made? Well, I found a clip from the Spanish version where you can hear it! I believe the name of the song is 'Battle Power Unlimited' and it starts at 2:17.
I've looked everywhere for that damn song and I can't find it!

You kick ass, for hooking me up! I LOVE the '80s synth-rock in this one and it worked very well with the scene in the anime!

It's the last arc of DB, the Ma Junior Saga.
Goku barely defeats Piccolo Daimao, who spits out an egg offspring before exploding. Goku goes to Kami's Lookout to train, at which point he's still a kid. There are a few "everybody's training" episodes, then they jump 3 years into the future for the Tenkaichi Budokai.
All the DB cast has assembled - Roshi, Bulma, Tenshinhan and Chaozu, and Yamucha (who now has his face scars, but its not explained how or why). Everyone is worried that Goku won't make it by the deadline. Then some little girl loses her balloon, and Bulma is trying to grab it out of a tree until Goku (who is now in adult form) grabs it for her. Everyone is like "Who the hell are you?" (Goku is wearing a turban and some funky clothes), and Goku's just like "It's me guys!" Then he takes off the turban, and everyone's like "Wait...Goku?? ...WHAT THE FU-!"
After the tournament ends, Goku runs off with Chi Chi, and there's a filler arc where the two of them have to rescue The Ox King and Chi Chi's Wedding Dress from Fire Mountain. They do so, get married, and that leads into DBZ.

Goku vs. Majunior was one of the best battles in anything Dragonball! I wish people actually cared about sharing more DB eps, rather than just DBZ or DBGT!

extra androids, how are there two time machines,
Iirc:
A)Androids-
#19 and 20 don't exist in Trunks' time, that's why he was all surprised @ the extra androids. (The future was altered by his going back in time to warn Goku and co.)
B)Time Machines-
Trunks in the Cell Saga = from Future Timeline A; took the time machine to help the z-senshi, blah blah blah.
Cell = from Future Timeline B; killededed Trunks in this timeline, then jacked the machine to go back into the past b4 the Trunks of Timeline A came along.
That's about the gist of it, I think.

Weeeeeeeee. I just did a run through Android Saga to the end of the Majin Buu saga. I had to forward through those fight scenes but it still took a while. I may have to buy the DBZ sagas afterall.
Fight between Piccolo and Android 17 definitely wins it all!
Now back to DB...
