Just get the NOCD sets that have been added to U4 and use them to play online.
Although I'm at work and I can't personally try it out yet, I don't think the NoCD sets will work with MAME. They only work for Elsemi's emu for now.
However, I could be totally wrong, and maybe U4 can play with those sets.

So he was actually in the programming but not usable in any way? Thats odd. I never knew any of that since I skipped 2I from NG and went straight to 3s. Thanks for clearing that up. I need to get 2I now...
So any chance he might be in 3S on DC or PS2/XBX? Or they axed him at all?

No they do work, they are completley different sets that have NOCD after them, [they were not supported before u4] but too much hassel for a lag fun time,
come on Elsemi, hit us with netplay already

I have no clue, it's in Japanese. However, it may read the nvram AFTER the first run of the CD-rom thing like it does offline except when it's online. Have you tried that? Otherwise, I really have NO clue why they'd release 4.1. =/

Right now I'm trying on Kaillera, but I started the game by myself. Find a server where you can start a game alone (daroms is the first one that comes to mind). I'll get back to everyone in around 20mins or longer. I'm setting up the nvram offline and online at the same time so it may be longer.
Although I may have troubles finding someone to test it out after I've started a game. IDK I thought I saw some people playing on 4.1 but they could have just been having the revelation that it has the CD-Rom loading screen also. Dunno.
EDIT: Sorry folks, 4.1 is jank unless you're using the NO CD versions.

I just got u.3 today! Now u.4 is out...especially since I'm a noob at Mame, I don't wanna download u.4 now and freakin screw anything up after it took me so long with the help of MaybeMemories to get up and running...

Agree 100% on everything you said.
Took me forever to get it working right, and they're releasing new version every 2 days, and I need to re-check over and over to make sure it works, but I don't want to bother people.

MAME usually isn't updated so frequently; it is recently since CPS3 is now being emulated. Also take into account that there are a bunch of different MAME builds.
Nobody is forcing you to use the newest version. I mean, people are STILL using that garbage MAME32k 0.64. Just wait until CPS3 emulation is perfect/progress slows, and stick with a build that you and your friends like.
Here is what was added to u4.1 regarding CPS3:
this update improves the palette fades and blending (warzard green sword looks good.. player sword looks good, fire effect looks good, jojo intro looks good)
not 100% sure it’s correct.. but it’s an improvement.

Also, 0.116u4 is the last version before 0.117, so if you find any bugs, please report then on the mametesters forum to make this build as instable as possible.
I wonder if Haze will manage to emulate the CPS3 at 100% speed until it comes out.

Basically what I just did... Hope people don't keep using u3.1 when .117 comes out. It'll probably be a while before the NOCD sets start getting circulated.

Anyone remember where to get to that recent official mame (32b?) release that supported CPS3? I don't mean the Mame32++ 0.116uwhatever that we've been using online. The one I'm talking about this time has an arcade machine (orange and black?) as its Windows icon, and the tab menu font was a bit different than the PlusPlus menus. I think the text was italicized and clearer/less rough-looking. Searched this thread and everywhere else (which is funny because didn't I get it here originally?!) but found nothing.
Thanks.

I think we are allowed. We aren't supposed to deny the existence of roms. We're allowed to say he needs roms.
What you need:
A CPS3 Emulator (Mame32++ 0.116u4.1 is the online one people are using)
The rom itself.
Pretty self explanatory. Well, maybe it isn't but I can't get into anymore depth than that without worrying about a ban hammer hitting me.

This is the final version of the CPS3 emulator.
So I guess this means for CPS3 netplay, it's MAME or nothing.
Well, atleast there are now graphics filters in ElSemi's CPS3 emu but its a real shame that its the final version. I was hoping for netplay which ElSemi could have easily have added via Kaillera.

Either my vision has fucking deteriorated or I'm seeing no differences at all? What video filters, when I look at this new update and MAME. I notice NOTHING! Is the video filters an option or something?
I see no difference between this and 0.116u3 tbh...unless I'm doing something wrong. I even loaded the CHD and it didnt do the writing process. Hell ELSemi's emu even lags for me. Something MAME hasnt been doing to me. I dunno know the reason. You STILL cant fucking pause emulation.
ELSemi's emu has been "meh" to me.
EDIT: Ok, I notice the filters...but I havent been seeing any differences. Unless I don't know what correct filter to use.

yeah after showing all that promise, ElSemi's emulator has become somewhat of a disappointment. i mean, sure i love it because it works on my computer, but there's a lot of things missing.
"unload rom" action was something he took out, why? it made things so easy to switch games. now you have to close the freaking emulator to switch games.
as spinning beat said, pausing is terrible. i have to keep pressing the pause button until it actually pauses. it's almost random. and if you talk to somebody on AIM while your game is "paused," it keeps going.
and, no netplay. netplay would've been freaking awesome with his emulator.
Hmm my plug-ins folder does indeed have DLL's, but is there supposed to be a scanline DLL's within the folder?
There are a few scanline DLL's in the plugin folder:
genericscan.dll
scale2x75.dll
scanclear50.dll
scanclear.dll
Check the Video -> Filters option in the emulator to change the filter while a game is running.

Does that last part mean we can use our own graphic filters by putting the .dll files into the plugins folder? Sounds like it, but I want to be sure because of the wording. 3S looks nice and arcade-like with the "unfiltered scalines 50%" but it seems a bit dark. Would it be possible to find a .dll file for an unfiltered scanlines 75% filter and use that? I have a feeling it would brighten it up a bit.

[CustomScan]
ScanType=0
Percent=0
That's the cfg file. Any ideas on what to put? I tried various things but nothing happened; when I start it always has the unfiltered SL 50% selected that I used before.

Is the online play in the Mame emulator even worth trying?
Yes.
In fact it's probably the most played game on Kaillera. At least on daroms and anti3d. It plays like any other 2d fighter on kaillera, except for if you yourself have a slow computer or your opponent does (you can tell if there computer is slow just by how long it takes them to load the ROM at th beginning of the game). I use the 'excellent' connection setting and so long as I don't play absurdly laggy (over 70 ping I kick them, I generally look for below 50 though) people I can get off parrying just like in real life, no big deal.

Yeah I tried the same time, I even messed with the framerates and thread priority/multithreading. I think they set the exact CD read time as the CPS3 machines for better accuracy. My advice:
Copy your nvram and paste it if you need to do it again
You can open multiple instances of MAME and do all your ROMS at once if your computer is fast enough.

Proper pausing, full speed. Just a better experience over-all. Even though I did have to boot the CD, which was complete bullshit. It took only 10 minutes per game. I only booted the CD's for Jojo and the SF3's.
Everything is alright in the new MAME. Plus the shadows don't look like fucking black holes anymore!
My PC can run MAME, so I have no problems with it. Although I admit ELSemi's is more memory friendly. But his newest is laggy as hell and the sprites look rough. I prefer my MAME.

If your computer can handle MAME, and if you have a fast computer the CD booting won't take THAT long. I thought it would be hours on my machine but it took 10 minutes for 2I and 15-20 for my NG.

Not really. The CHD has to be placed in it's own folder named the same as the ROM. For example:
\mame\roms\sfiii3a.zip
\mame\roms\sfiii3a\cap-33s-2.chd
This works for me.

I read the "read me" file and all but could not find how to load cheats with this Mame. Any help would be great.

Open the MAME GUI, then go to Options and click Default Game Options. In the window that opens up, on the left side of the window you will see "Miscellaneous", click that. You will now see a menu with tick/check boxes, find the one that says "Enable game cheats" and tick it. Click OK..............Now run your game then press TAB while in game to bring up the MAME in-game menu.
The rest is pretty straight forward after that!!

i've got a question that's been bothering me for a while now.
let's say we have a crappy computer whose video card sucks. if we can get the cps3 mame and ElSemi's emulator to work, why can't we get a dreamcast emulator to work well/properly? (since sfiii was ported to dreamcast) it should work, no?
Gaijinblaze
07-11-2007, 10:07 AM
Gaijinblaze- would have thought that was it but didnt work for me either, atleast he also gave source for some of the filters :)
Well if you ever figure out any way to configure the filters, let me know. All I want is for the unfiltered 50% to have the brightness of the scale2x 75%, then I can stop bugging people. :wgrin:
Uh, anyone notice a difference in gameplay between ElSemi's emu and MAME? Like in 3S, the gameplay just feels smoother and less strained in ElSemi's to me. Does MAME have built-in input lag or something?
No wonder I couldn't access the service menu before, my F keys don't even work apparently. Once I designated a different button for it, I could get to it. I hope they're not permanently broken.

Hey guys,
I discovered what you must do in order to have no input lag whatsoever on these (and other) emulators.
First, use the USB polling rate modifier and change your Windows USB rate to 1000mhz. This will reduce your 8-millisecond USB input lag to 1-millisecond. Instructions here: http://forums.shoryuken.com/showpost.php?p=4053071&postcount=627
Next, MAKE SURE you have Vertial Sync DISABLED. For ElSemi's emulator, open the emulator.ini and make sure you have "ForceSync=0". For MAME, just go to your game's properties, click "Advanced" on the left-hand menu, then make sure "Wait for Vertial Sync" and "Triple Buffering" are both unchecked.
The downside to having Vertical Sync disabled is that you may experience image tearing while you play. The only way to fix this is to INCREASE the refresh rate for your monitor. However, if you can't do that, you do have to just live with the tearing. This is the ONLY way to play with no lag.
Finally, make sure you have a lag-free adapter if you're using a Playstation joystick. The Pelican brand PS2 to PS3 adapter works great for this, and is detected automatically by Windows XP!
Response time will be 100% arcade accurate if you do these three things.
Happy gaming!
Shoryuken needs to have its own European and US Kaillera servers so we can have online SF3TS tournaments.
BTW, MAME 0.117's SF3TS Japan NO CD set runs in US mode online so you can read the super art names.

I didn't do anything. In 0.116u4.1 and below, the text was in Japanese but when I went online with 0.117 the text was in English in the NCD version of SF3TS even though MAME should run it in Japanese. I think the person who compiles Mame++ set the NCD version to run in English online.

Gaijinblaze

Yeah exactly. If you don't know what supers to pick you've got bigger things to worry about than dipswitches. Especially if you're new to 3S, you shouldn't be learning the timing of the game online. It's like teaching a young child a useless language he'll never use instead of a necessary one. Gotta start off the right way when you're most vulnerable.

I have a question for anyone knowledgable in MAME...I've been playing SFIII3 for a few days now under MAME on my mac, and recently installed ElSemis emulator on my girlfriends PC. I immediately noticed a large difference in the visual quality between the two versions with the PC being quite superior. The MAME version on mac looks to be in either lower resolution, lower color depth or lower anti-aliasing.
Does anyone know what could be causing the difference? Opengl vs. direct3d? I've tried several of the runtime options on my mac but haven't been able to get the quality the same.

If I'm on mistaken. Elsemi's emu is much better in terms of quality than the Mame Emu. Although ElSemi's does not come with online play...its a sacrifice some people will take. In other words, Elsemi's emu is made much better than the Mame ones.

I would try:
1. Enabling Bilinear Filtering.
2. Enabling a Visual Effect (I like Aperture 2x4bg)
3. Enabling an Image Enhancement (some of these take up a lot of processing however)
4. Set Scale Screen to 1.
5. Set you resolution if you're playing in full screen, but also turn on Enforce Aspect Ratio.
EDIT: This (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v375/prozaccat/Untitled-1.png) is what SFIII3 looks like on my screen. I use Aperture 2x4bg and Bilinear Filtering (Bilinear Filtering is probably the most important option). Some people don't like Aperture, I've had my firend tell me it looks like an old TV. Be sure to click to zoom in on the image in Firefox/IE it has weird red lines if it's not zoomed to it's actual size.
I use the 2xSai filter in MAME with 640x480 res, 60Hz refresh and vsync enabled on a 21" Sony CRT monitor.
http://i14.tinypic.com/54028tu.jpg
Looks better than that on-screen due to the JPG compression.

ElSemi 1.0 works as well for me as the other three did, basically at full speed, but MAME, which improved in speed only a little for me after .117, is still far too slow to use. I'm beginning to think it's my crappy mobo that won't let me dual-channel my RAM. Still, all things considered, I don't think it should run at only 55%...

What are the specs of your mac? Mame has always run worse on my Macs, I'm assuming because it gets less support in general.

I noticed compared to the console versions, the game looks zoomed in. IS there anyway to make it appear like it did on my TV in the PS2 version.
I said this in an earlier post:
This (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v375/prozaccat/Untitled-1.png) is what SFIII3 looks like on my screen. I use Aperture 2x4bg and Bilinear Filtering (Bilinear Filtering is probably the most important option). Some people don't like Aperture, I've had my friend tell me it looks like an old TV. Be sure to click to zoom in on the image in Firefox/IE it has weird red lines if it's not zoomed to it's actual size.
My advice is to enable Bilinear Filtering and choose a Visual Effect.
EDIT: that screen shot doesn't really do it justice here are some more:
Opening Screen. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v375/prozaccat/openingscreen.jpg) Looks almost anti-aliased around the edges.
Character Select. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v375/prozaccat/characterselect.jpg) The circles aren't as smooth as they may be with an Image Enhancement like 2xsai. But I think it looks an awful like it does on my TV.
Shin Akuma stage. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v375/prozaccat/shinakumastage.jpg) Looks sort of like my first screen shot, just not during a special so it's not dimmed.
If anybody else has any settings I'd like to hear what you use and see some screenshots, I messed around with the settings Eiji posted and got some pretty results with that too.

From the discussion here... if you looked... Mame is more memory hungry then the CPS3 emulator. You could try a different video out put aswell.

Welcome to the joys of raster graphics.
CPS2 and CPS3 fighters run at a native res of 384x224 pixels. If you're playing on a PC monitor at some incredibly high resolution (1280x1024 is pretty average for most low-end LCDs these days), then each single pixel from the emulated game will be scaled three or more times in each direction. i.e: What was a single pixel on the arcade original becomes 9 pixels (3x3) or more on your monitor! Just like if you draw a single-pixel width diagonal line in any paint package and scale the image 3+ times in size, you'll see the horrid stair-stepping effect as the pixels grow.
If you find that ugly, you've got 3 choices:
1) Use the various RGB filters provided by your emulator, as documented by Johneh above. Some emulators also include extra scaling options like Scale2x (http://scale2x.sourceforge.net/), but do be warned that all of these chew up extra CPU power. This will attempt to blur the image enough to fool your eyes into thinking it looks better than it really does.
2) Connect your PC via TV-out to a low-res TV. The downside here is most TV-out cards will spit out an interlaced signal, which can be equally as ugly for purists. It's worth noting however that the PS2 version of 3S is interlaced, so it can't look any worse.
3) Use AdvanceMAME (http://advancemame.sourceforge.net/) and/or and ArcadeVGA (http://www.ultimarc.com/avgainf.html) and connect your PC to a real-life RGB 15KHz arcade monitor. Both represent considerable cost and effort, but will give you the most arcade-like experience, and the best visual quality that is proper progressive scan 15KHz RGB output. Tasty.

You've got no chance on an XBox. The CPU's too slow, and there's not nearly enough RAM.
CHD games do chew up a lot of memory. Run MAME+3S in a window, fire up task manager (windows) or top (Linux/UNIX/Mac) and see how much memory it's using. I don't know if the 256MB on a PS3 would be enough to be honest.
Games like DoDonPachi and GunBird 2 already creep into the 300MB of RAM usage when fired up under MAME and all ROMs are loaded into memory.

Uhh yeah, that's kinda the problem with emulation. Get a better processor if you want it to run smoother, or find an emulator that uses GPU acceleration.

Two words.
Virtual Memory.
RAM is around 1000 times faster than disk (RAM latency is measured in nanoseconds [10^-9] whereas disk latency is measured in milliseconds [10^-6] - making disk literally 1000 times slower OR WORSE).
Swapping back and forth to disk is called "thrashing", and means instant and severe reduced performance for applications that do it.
Virtual Memory (ie: "swap") is designed for what's called "graceful process degradation". It allows a process to gracefully make it's way out of RAM to swap to free up for other interactive/foreground apps, and then eventually quit out and die (unless it's used again, and swapped back into active memory pages).
Running a single application that has half of it's active pages in RAM and half in disk means the application (a) runs up to 1000 times slower for any memory calls and (b) has additional overhead as it pushes RAM pages to disk and vice versa.
So once again, I don't believe the the PS3 has enough physical RAM to cope. And all the "Virtual Memory" (swap) in the world isn't going to fix it. In fact, it's the very reason WHY it won't work so well on PS3.

Wait... if it's only the CHD version that would run the XBox out of memory, why couldn't the console run the no-CD version, especially given a less resource-intensive emu like FBAxxx?
Come on, if the thing can run the Neo Geo MONSTERS at full speed and no frameskip, are you trying to tell me a single SH-2 would somehow magically bring the console to its knees?
Let's face it, MAME is a pig. It loads things in it never needs, and probably, thanks to its Mongolian Hordes-styled programming, probably doesn't UNLOAD it, making its memory footprint ginormous.
Yes, MAME for CPS3 on the XBox would probably fail, but that doesn't mean CPS3 on the XBox itself would.

Come on, if the thing can run the Neo Geo MONSTERS at full speed and no frameskip, are you trying to tell me a single SH-2 would somehow magically bring the console to its knees?
SH-2 isn't an easy CPU to emulate either. I honestly don't believe the XBox's low-cache 733MHz CPU could do the job. Looking at some of the other single-CPU SH-2 games in MAME (say, some of the 2D ST-V/Saturn games that have one of the processors disabled like Shienryu and Cotton), and they're requiring 2GHz+ on full-cache Intel x86 procs to get a full 60FPS.
No, I don't think the XBox will handle CPS3 well at all. I could be wrong (and often am), but I just don't see it happening.
What I am sure of however is that there will be a lot of effort into getting it working anyway. That whole scene is full of folks who'll work day and night to port and hack various emulators into a working state on XBox. But I'm just laying down my early prediction that it won't be happening at a full 60FPS.
Well the CPS3 games can pretty much get away with an underclocked SH-2 at 10MHz instead of the normal 25MHz.
I think frameskip will be needed to run CPS3 on Xbox even with the CPU at 10MHz. I can't imagine it running without frameskip. Even at 10MHz, the SH-2 is more powerful than the CPS2's 68000 @ 16 MHz.

Enable Infinite Power P1/P2, Infinite Time, and Infinite Energy P1/P2. Also, if you want to get a perspective on how much damage you're doing this is what I do: I disable the cheats using F6 and then before you/the computer/second player dies hit F6 again and they'll go back up to full health and the time will reset. There's also Auto Blocking and Stun Settings found by people in this thread earlier on (props to you guys these are nifty).
BTW: that also lets you choose the stage and play as Shin Akuma/Gill.
If you don't know how to enable cheats, I'll give you a walk through just tell me. This is for MAME32 (which includes ++).

I'm still hoping more stuff gets discovered, although that doesn't seem too likely.
Anyways, if you're using the No CD Rom you can copy and paste all of the aforementioned cheats into a file named cheat.dat (open up a notepad copy and paste the cheats and save the file as cheat.dat). Then place that file in your MAME directory (the mame directory with MAME and MAME.ini not any subfolders).
Now, you're going to have to enable cheats in MAME, because for whatever reason they're usually set to off by default. Open up MAME.ini in Notepad and scroll down till you see the section Core Misc Options in that section there should be Cheat and to the right of Cheat there should be either a 1 or a 0.
0, of course means off.
1, of course means on.
Replace the 0 with a 1. Then save the file. Fire up MAME and run SFIII:3s No CD (very important that it's No CD, if you aren't using the NoCD version I'll give you the cheats for the original version too). Now when in game hit Tab > go to Cheats > go to Enable Cheats and there should be all the cheats.
For more information (and probably a more thorough explanation) go to these sites:

what version of mame works well with 3s and also I have a logitech pc controller. Does mame have a 8 button layout so I can change the controll scheme as the ps2 with L1 and L2 as 3ppp, 3kkk? On the nebula site it says added feature 8 button support for version 1.0a, but on the cps3 emu there's only 6.
Henaki

you cant map 3PPP and 3KKK without some sort of input program such as joy2key i think.
8 button support means the emulator supports up to 8 different inputs besides joystick, not that its the console version.

Yes, you can. I would set L2 as 3ppp and L1 as hard punch. What you do is you set the LP, MP, HP and then set another buttons as the same for them (after you set a button if you select the same button again it adds the button to your scheme, pressing ESC will set the field to 'none'). Confused? This is my layout (I'm using a 360 controller the Z Button is actually the left/right trigger):

So say I wanna do Akuma's ppp special, I'd just hit DDD + Left Trigger.

I've been trying to play this with my cousin on kaillera, but I can't get it to work. Is there something special that I have to do? We both have the same emulator and the same no cd japan region 3rd strike rom, but whenever we start the game up we are playing two separate games. We don't see each other in the same game.
Also, does anyone know how to talk in game again?

Your PC is fine. Just try a different video output. DD and D3D are slow for my card. I tried GDI and bingo! Full speed. You might try enabling throttle and allowing frame skip also.

i think mine ran too fast on DD.
so i have it back to D3D, you can even turn the biliner effects off for speed but mine was too fast
i enabled multithreading , runs fine, slow online could be my speed

You hit the 'Home' key to to talk. If you don't see your message on the screen when you send it you aren't synched, if you two have that problems again both of you should reset your emulator and try again. This happens to me sometimes.

OK, I'll keep workin on it.
R o c k l e e: I made a small program that scrambles data and finds pointers depending on what section I put. I grabbed the data from what I found on the Xbox version.
I also found out character animation data. clsn data velocities etc etc but don't know how to tell what goes to what. With time it's separable but the method I'm using is too hard.

I just noticed something interesting when in Hugo's NG stage....
There's a reason the crowd disappears in round 2.
If you look over on the right side, you'll notice someone there who wasn't during the main festival, apparently passed out drunker'n a skunk.
If it goes to a third round, the table in the middle seems to disappear as well (one of those nice little touches that got lost in 2I, I suppose).
Apparently, the fight begins at the tail end of some kind of party in Munich (Oktoberfest, possibly?), and shuts down as it wears on...

I wonder why Jojo's Bizarre adventure games had to be on CPS3. Playing it now its a great game, but graphically not as 2D intensive as something like MVC1. The games could have easily been CPS2, same goes for Red Earth i think.
Only the SFIII trilogy really needed the CPS3 horsepower.

JoJo's and Red Earth both use a lot of hardware scaling. There's no way either would work on CPS2 for that reason alone.
Remember that programmers take a while to get used to hardware as well. 3S is the last of the CPS3 games, and the programmers doing it had a lot more experience with the hardware. You can't expect games appearing on hardware in the early years to look as good as games in later years.
Ghouls and Ghosts, Knights of the round - 2 CPS1 games. Neither look anywhere near as good as Final Fight and Street Fighter 2, released on the same hardware but quite some years later.

Yep! Another example would be Super Street Fighter 2 for CPS2. Compare that with MvC1 or SFA3 towards the end of CPS2's career. Another big improvement from beginning to end.
