Have you ever read Sirlin's Playing to Win? It's a really good read, I'd recommend it. I'm guessing you think Real Lady's tactics are invalid because of some reason.

The bottom line is they work, and you use what works to win.

As they say, "if it's in the game, don't complain."

Again, check out Sirlin's Playing to Win. He works for Capcom now and is one of the main guys behind SSF2THD. So his philosophies when it comes to games are probably worth noting.

If the kind of strategy (if you can call it that) which can be made to work over Live, were viable offline, then that's what you'd be seeing at a tournament level, where competition is at it's most fierce and the standard of play is at it's height. The fact that you don't see wing and a prayer supers and excessive dash throws at these events is all the proof you should need that they don't work without lag, or against an able opponent.

The general gist of solid offline play is to eliminate every possible risk and to exploit the opponent's mistakes to the greatest extent possible. You can asses your opponent on these criteria fairly easily. A bad player can put in some impressive rounds with a little bit of luck (it takes just one random Makoto SA2 to turn a round, or one wakeup Shinshoryuken) and it's easy to mistake this for skill. A good player will beat you with minimal offense, minimal risk and maximum retaliation.

Also, playing with the utmost determination to win on Live is the path to the dark side. If you look at the standard of play amongst the most determined players, like those folks fishing for an S rank, it's plain to see that they're playing a repetitive, boring and crude subset of the game that has none of the variety and dynamism of offline 3S, which most of us signed up for in the first place.

It's because so many players have only pursued what works to win over live, that most games are so unrewarding. Do you honestly want XBL running rife with this bastardized, lag fostered imitation of the game?

I haven't been playing on live (or 3S in general) for that long, but I would much rather learn true skills then some lag tactics on live.

I'm starting to realize who is just using lag tactics (basically most Akumas), and I don't like playing them. I do enjoy playing those that are unpredictable and don't use the same boring moves over and over again.

I USE MAKOTO OFFLINE TO AND THE ONLY DIFERENCE IS THE TIMING ON PARRY,AND YOU R NOT CORRECT ABOUT THEY DONT USE dash throws THEY DO ,THEY DONT USE AS MUCH BECOUSE THE CONSIDER TO RISKY REMEMBER IS A TOURNAMENT,I WATCH LOTS OF TOURNAMENT VIDEOS (3RD STRIKE IS BASE ON TIMING AND DISTANCE)CHINATOWN FARE BEST PLAYERS THERE THEY BASE ON TIMING "WHY" I TELL YOU WHY ,,when they play they defence is really hard ,becouse they wait ,they wait and charge at the same time until you come close and attack if you are a good player if not the rush the hell out of you,the intimidated you by wait for a opening to activade they super and they say why u are goint to attack if you winning just stay back and keep your guard up!,i use that stragedy to dash and do MY COMMAND GRAB.(timing)
LOTS OF PLAYERS use wakeup shoryuken on my makoto witch it make it easy for me that is when i use my distance to parry or do my kara move ,i play lots of people ,every one play different some play the same as other some use mind games,some use tactics, my point is it dont matter if you play online or offline is the same the only difference is the timing if you are a good player and play offline you know what im talking about when i play in the arcade it take me a little time to get adjusted with the time and when i come home and play online my timing is really scrue up.

Actually, you DO see these. Just not at the end of the tournament, where most videos people watch are recorded.

Typically players who do the things you mention above get wiped out fairly quickly though, even online.

Things change online and they change in person, and they change based on whomever you're playing.

I've seen lame tactics work in tournament play, and I've seen them online. And sometimes they work and are valid, even though we feel they shouldn't be.

Again, I really recommend checking out Sirlin's Playing to Win. He covers this stuff better than I could, and he's an offline tournament winner.

Competitive offline play is my answer to this argument. If the kind of strategy (if you can call it that) which can be made to work over Live, were viable offline, then that's what you'd be seeing at a tournament level, where competition is at it's most fierce and the standard of play is at it's height. The fact that you don't see wing and a prayer supers and excessive dash throws at these events is all the proof you should need that they don't work without lag, or against an able opponent.

LOTS OF PLAYERS use wakeup shoryuken on my makoto witch it make it easy for me that is when i use my distance to parry or do my kara move ,i play lots of people ,every one play different some play the same as other some use mind games,some use tactics, my point is it dont matter if you play online or offline is the same the only difference is the timing if you are a good player and play offline you know what im talking about when i play in the arcade it take me a little time to get adjusted with the time and when i come home and play online my timing is really scrue up.

Actually, you DO see these. Just not at the end of the tournament, where most videos people watch are recorded. Typically players who do the things you mention above get wiped out fairly quickly though, even online.

I've seen lame tactics work in tournament play, and I've seen them online. And sometimes they work and are valid, even though we feel they shouldn't be.

That's the point I'm making. As the standard of play improves the amount of risk taking you see during matches decreases.

Over XBL the cost of taking those risks is at it's lowest, that's why they're more common. Your opponent is most likely not very good in the first place. He's burdened by latency in timing his retaliation and burdened once more in his punishment execution. The net effect is that a mistake, or an intentional risk will rarely result in the full, justified punishment. Offline, against capable players, against tournament players, against elite players, those risks start to pay off less and less. The amount of punishment you'll expect to receive for any mistake increases in tandem with the skill of your opponent.

Look at the top Japanese players. Nuki's Chun wrecks most top players, even when they're playing super safe (hit confirming at that sort of level means Chun's C.MK is effectively ~70 damage plus knockdown - whether you make mistakes or not :wow:). If you take a risk, any risk when he has meter, you will lose half your life.

I've read parts of Sirlin's Playing to Win before, though I've always found Game Theory (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_theory) a more insightful analogy to competitive gaming.

Everytime I play you I never start off with my best chars cause you're not deserving of it.



Actually I started parrying his crossups during the set. It would be hard for me to review the matches as we are playing since I would have to stop, rewind, review...etc etc. I just record matches cause I thought it would be fun and a learning experience for everyone.



Tournament is tournament and XBL is XBL. If you can play from your own home against anyone in the world why would you play them just once? I'm not on here for bragging rights, i'm on here to play unlike yourself. People say that I'm good cause they can see skill vs dash in throw with makoto...remind you of anyone?



You make it seem like evo players are invincible or something. People play and they lose, that's how they learn. You just happen to have one of those inate abilities called WTF Skills. During your matches I'm just like why the fuck would you do that right there? Show me a quality match outside of you doing some dash throwing and I'll be like okay he has potential. You know if you spent more time developing your skills instead of yappin there still may be hope for you.

I never have a problem chasing Rockman down in tourneys. :lol: It's tough to play against Ibuki players in any kind of lag so he may have been purposely more defensive to compensate for the lag. Even offline tournament level Uriens have to block a good bit against good Ibuki players. Her pokes are simply better than his for the most part so he has to take time to look for opportunities to punish. Throwing random fireballs and jumping in at innopportune times is a quick way for Urien to get thrown in the corner and stunned. A good Urien player can force Ibuki to turtle as well because Urien's damage pay off is so much higher off certain attacks than Ibuki's. If Urien has Ibuki at mid screen...rushing all over him isn't the best idea in the first place. All it takes is one c.HP, headbutt or AA fireball to ruin Ibuki.

If you never see any good player that's turtling...go on YouTube and type in Kuroda or Tokido. You'll have enough turtling to last you a life time. They'll win matches that way too.

I agreed with you that Urien needs to block. What I am trying to say here is running away vs stay within a close distance. Like Tokido, he stays within a distance that he has the priority over the other. He doesn't run around.

GG's Too Much Power. Good stuff. Kara throws were on point and you have some nice block strings. You let me block way too much stuff though. I realize how the Akuma vs Urien match-up should be played, but so many dive kicks would be rich pickings in a better connection. I was picking you out of quite a few, in that connection. Lost two matches because my execution failed me as things went right to the wire. Nice execution on the kara demons. I'm absolutely positive I should have escaped at least one. Was holding up whilst I was still on the floor. Got caught anyway :( I forgot to send you and FR. Very interesting matches.

How come the connection goes so slow when either one of us jumps? It wasn't scrolling or anything, but it slowed noticeably. Weird.

GG's Shep D. Our connection sucks. Some good matches in there. I didn't really have the input granularity to contend with your Ibuki. Too fast! :)

GG Goblin King. Connection at the character select screen was awesome. Easily the best I've seen. So good in fact, that I sent you a FR there and then. The game fired up and things instantly went to shit :sad:

GG XEN MASTER MARK yeah the lag wasn't the best but I guess I used that to my advantage by using the dive kick a little more then I would use to haha but fun matches though =)
