It would be great if you could teach me how to better control my Board.Everytime I move at high speeds,I feel uncomfortable as fuck, and if you read my post earlier,I bailed going down a slope that wasn't even that steep.Plus I can barely turn without feeling like the board is coming from under me.

One of my friends may also be coming with me if this happens. He already knows how to do some tricks and stuff though.

If you may my asking, are you Black or White?

Just because randomly I've seen some good Black skateboarders around

In the 100's or further down low like the 80's,70's or 60's?

And yeah.I do feel kind of "Awkward",Skating around on the Southside.

The way I figure is that if I get good enough, regardless where I am,or who it is,they have to respect that.

If I ride around not being able to do shit like I am right now however,I will get occasional stares.

I'd rather impress a few kids, and get some stares, then having EVERYBODY saying "Dayum!Dat nigga right thur suckz!!!!"

Chicago is just now starting to get consistent 40 degree weather(Which is pretty warm IMO),and I would imagine that is about as cold as it gets(A little more or less) in the Deep South.

Well just my right one, but they couldn't figure out why it happened or whatever. Supposedly it usually happen to tall Latino males and stuff. It could of been a pre existing condition or something but I doubt that it had something with skating. I had no chest trama or fallen to the point where you get the air knocked out of me. I was 16 going to 17 when this shit happened. But everything is good now.

Bluntslides on ledges are nuts. I prefer to do them on rail. lol Practice locking or stalling on curbs to get a better feel for it. I can't really say on how to them on a ledge.

I got this from another website but idk how much help it would be.

blunt slide
these are done by olling and turning a 90 or more to position your tail on the object from the other side.
exicution: ride at a large angle towards your object, and pop a hella high ollie. now turn a 90 or more degree angle, what ever it takes to get your tail on the object. all of your weight should be on the tail, and to get a long slide it just takes practice, that is the key to these tricks is practice
this trick can be done f/s or b/s.

Do you guys skate like full time on a long term basis?

I've been skateboarding for about 6 years and for the first 3 it's all I cared about. I lived in a small town and just cruised down the empty roads and tried flatland tricks and shit.

Now I live in a city with mad parks and 7 year old kids who can just dominate. I'm not really feelin it. Fucking cookie cutter humans all wearing the same outfit, it's just not skateboarding how I came up.

The point of my rant is this:
Is it normal to stop caring for awhile and come back in a year or two?

final_cut
04-10-2008, 03:29 PM
It's normal, but as a rule I try to stay away from parks in general, and limit myself to a max of once a month. (I take my kids to the park, that is the big plus there, can't take them street skating.) I mean they can be fun, but they tend to suck the life out of skateboarding. Unless you are into vert and your park has a vert ramp, that is a different story.

Before dealing with curbs, ledges, gaps, stairs ... almost anything ... get comfortable doing the trick with a decent amount of speed, flat ground. For ollies, get to where you can ollie comfortably rolling pretty fast (just work your way up, a bit at a time). I used to ollie over gaps that I would draw on the ground with chalk, so that way if I missed or came up short there was no consequence. Afterwards, gaps were no issue.

I've seen lots of people get hurt because they roll up timidly and only partially commit to the trick. If you roll up to a curb slowly, for example, chances are your back truck will clip, no matter how well you pop it.

As for getting over fears, just inch toward your goals a little bit at a time. Where I grew up, there was a spot with a 2-stair, a 3-stair, a 5-stair, and a 7-stair. No one went straight to the 7. I started by doing flip tricks on the two, then kept moving up until I could pull the same stuff on the 7. I lucked out growing up near a spot like that, but you can simulate the same thing in other ways.

I would lose kickflips off and on over the years. There was an odd period where my switch flips were more consistent than my regulars. I always kinda left kickflips behind when I started on a bunch of new tricks.

Same here. Some days I'm on point, but other days I have mad issues. The worst is when I set up for what I feel like will be an epic kickflip, but then I don't even fucking ollie and the board just rolls over on the ground.

Hell, I'm just glad I got through that learning phase of kickflips. Just above my back ankle on the inside of my leg... I had a permanent swollen bump. Boards were a lot bigger then, and I was constantly smacking my board against that part of my leg somehow. I dunno how I even did it, but shit, man, that was some pain. Now my main concern is keeping balance in line with the extra weight I've put on from drinking beer. I mean, from getting older.

Yeah, thats how I'm feeling about these Ricta wheels right now. I was ready to slap my momma.

edit: I always forget why I love skating in September/October until I am out of school for break. Winter months are raped with cold weather, Im in basketball mode during the Spring months and summer is just either raining or too fucking hot. The only thing that saves the summer is the night skating, but thats overrated.

September/October gives you that great weather, Halloween Skating at UNC is just one of my favorite times of the year.

And whats up no free outdoor parks in the area? (although I've heard of some random half-pipe in the middle of the country)

Black Chanler
06-07-2008, 08:11 AM
I never really bought "skating" shoes, I've always just skated in old Nikes/ new balances (and I was given DC's), and I am under the impression that the Nike SB's are terrible to skate in (minus the zoom tre, but they are out of my price range).

*flips through ccs mag*

I was thinking about getting the Lakai Koston's, I'm sure he wouldn't wear no bullshit.

OJ4
06-08-2008, 08:21 AM
yeah dont skate in sb's. they have nice designs and everything. but you would be dropping 80+ on them and i'm sure youre not gonna want to shred in them.

lakai's, es', falllen are pretty dope. i've never had a pair of dc's, i never liked the designs of them so i cant tell you if they are good or not. but then again its all really just personal preferance.

what i used to do is go to this skateshop at the beach called hotline and go to the sales table and they always had shoes on sale after they would be released after like two months and i would get two pairs of kicks for the price of one.

i recommend goin to a mom and pop skateshop, they would be able to help you more than pacsun would.

I think SBs are good for skating in. I got my kid some P-Rods and he likes them. I had some black SBs I used to like a bunch. They didn't wear out too fast. More recently I got some supra vulk shoes, dunno what they are called but they are the best lowtop vulk shoes I've ever worn. I bought 2 extra pairs, cuz skate shoes these days, they don't stay on the market long.

Anyone remember the mike carroll vans midtop? those were the best ever. Only available once.

OJ4

hey guys.. question : loose trucks, or tight?

i personally ride tight, loose is too wild for me. but i've heard loose is better once you get used to it

I ride with my trucks so loose, they almost fall off. Kind of like a crutch, but I like to be able to turn and push at the same time, you know?

learn how to carry your board with your front foot when you pop. what i mean by this is, when you pop your front foot should immediately go into action and float up to carry your board. dont focus on ollieing really high, just try to pop and carry.

What are you guys doing this Saturday? Skateboarding, I hope. June 21st is go skate day. I'm working on a few things, you can see the flyer for it on my site (http://www.busstopmag.com/). Basically we are having a skate competition at 4 of the 8 different skateparks in the city. Contest is called 'Bangers for Bucks', and it's basically like a best trick contest on 1 obstacle for like an hour, then we move on to the next park. So I'm doing that, and then I'm going to head over to a different park just south of where I live, because there is a big party/music thing. My kid's gonna skate in a 3 and under contest.

Can't wait!

Shit, google maps is probably just as good as anything. There are so many parks these days, it's not even funny.
There are some sites though, but most of them try too hard to include every park, and it's too much to keep up with. Lots of the info on skateparks gets outdated pretty quickly. But anyway, there is:
Transworld skatepark finder:
http://www.skateboarding.com/client_search.do?typeID=207&name=&city=&state=FL
Skateboardparks.com

Etc. Most of these sites vary in degrees of brokenness, but that's what you have to deal with.

I've Started doing my own map of spots using google maps though, it's insane. You can create your own content and have it be searchable - I'm adding the tag 'Skate Spot' to each and every location in my town that is skateable over the weekend. Can you imagine if everyone started doing that?

Loose Trucks turn easier I think,so you can Kick turn and stuff like that.

As a beginner I feel more comfortable on Tight Trucks tho.I'll eventually move over to looser trucks

Black Chanler
06-18-2008, 01:38 PM
Well I never skated loose until today,

+turning is easier
+your spins are better
+so are your pivots

-but its easier to fall
-harder to land
-if you have them too loose you will get wheelbite and you will mos definitely eat shit.

Once you get over that hump I think its better.

i ride my skateboard around town...just the other day i had to skate to work...45 min event.

now mind u i tend to have rocks and cracks..will this throw me off....will the skateboard have a tendency to get stuck in small cracks or will it ride just the same.

I'm not the most qualified person to answer all of this so I'll answer best to my ability(And let one of the more experienced guys correct me if I am wrong)

But that's cool.I try to Skate up my Block whenever I can,so yeah it's definitely good to get out.

Yeah you can get thrown off your board by rocks and cracks from my experience, but if you are going fast enough usually you won't have too many problems with small cracks.Traveling over Rocks or Gravel,I wouldn't exactly recommend that since it's not exactly flat ground.Kind of a nuisance to me,since I am relatively new.I almost face planted a couple of times because of rocks.

I'm just starting to get around to the point where I feel comfortable enough in myself to start ollieing so I'm not exactly in a position yet to answer the ollie question.

For me it just helps me land better, turn better. I don't really like to lift the front wheels to turn. But you really need to learn to balance and control your board on the ground better. Some people say you get stiffer pop with tight trucks, which makes sense, but if you have good balance you should be good either way.

I like to zoom around cars and people sometimes (like an asshole, lol) so I keep mine super loose in case I need to cut left or right all of the sudden.

*flips through ccs mag*

I was thinking about getting the Lakai Koston's, I'm sure he wouldn't wear no bullshit.

<3 My Nike P-Rod 2's,but those will be the last Nike Skate shoes that I buy,and try to skate in.Nice shoes, but too damn nice.

Lakai's,Vans,or Etnies is the way I would go.Lakai has some really nice shoes, and of course Vans are classics.

Yeah, that's the level I want to get at.Like EA Skate type shit

My board control is so much better than it was when I first started out,but I'm not that comfortable yet lol.

Anyway need Ollie tips. How do I get my Back wheels off the ground?

It's basically like

1)Bend knees,Pop Tail

2)Jump and simultaneously slide front foot up the nose

3)Level out

4)Land

the gnarliest shit happened to me on monday....

so i was at the skate park, and there was this big drop in, the slanted kind not a quarter pipe or roll in, that me and my friend were messing around on because there was another one a little bit smaller not too far away that was good to catch air off of given you get a lot of speed.

So my like 5th time hitting it, i took a lot of speed with me going into the drop in and right when i get over the edge i see this little black kid coming in from the opposite side really slow and it all happened so fast but the next thing i knew SMACK and a warm sensation spread throughout my mouth accompanied by two stinging sensations.

After i had spit up a good amount of blood, rinse my mouth out at the water fountain for 20 minutes, then iced my mouth for another 20 minutes, i had realized what happened from my friends account.

Apparently, i would have went right by the kid but he got so scared he put his head down so his helmet was brandished sort of, like right as i came by so it sort of swung into my mouth. Of course, my teeth just bashed against my mouth and left me with two severe wounds that are still prickling with pain.

he came up to me and was like "are you ok?" i was so pissed i was just like "no. watch where your going" and i stormed off. the kid was a scrub too i observed later, he would just fuckin sit around.

What do you mean by custom exactly? If you are looking for a good board, there are all kinds of factors that go into it. How big are your feet? Are you a heavier guy? For me I usually ride workshop decks, but I recently got a couple of Krooked decks that I like a lot - I little bit wider than I'm used to but I'm kind of liking it because I'm riding more transition lately. I also got some new Indy trucks - be wary of buying new trucks - It's like learning how to skate all over again.

BaSiK_TeKniK

Hey, check this out - ESPN just put up a new interview with Ryan Sheckler. I wrote about it on my website here (http://forums.shoryuken.com/busstopmag.com), but you can see the direct link here (http://sports.espn.go.com/espnmag/story?id=3492225).

Some choice quotes:
---
"A signature ChapStick would be so sweet," he says to no one in particular.
Encouraged, Shaw leans forward. "So," he says, "how do you feel about flavors?"
---
He is unlike any street skater in history. One, because he is preternaturally gifted, able to ride with uncommon grace and with the consistency of a dart pro. And two, because he's happy selling out. He plans to start a clothing company. A gear company. Do movies. "You know what I really want?" he asks earnestly. "My own cologne."
---
Film scripts arrive on a regular basis, including, Sheckler says, one based on Avril Lavigne's song "Sk8er Boi."

---
Sheckler turned 18 last December.... (followed by)
Skoal. "My only addiction," he says, tucking a wad into his lower lip. "I started doing it about six months ago. I don't know why." He says he doesn't do any other drugs but does drink a little now and then. As it turns out, he drank the previous night until 3 a.m., hitting the clubs and dance floors of New York City, making out with America's Next Top Model winner CariDee English, a woman nearly five years his senior. "She kept tugging at my hair. It was like, What is that about? She wasn't so great with the conversation, either," he says. "She wants to fly out to a contest. Whatever."
---

I've always tried to avoid reading too much about this guy, and I've never watched the show, but after reading this I kinda wanna see all the rediculous things he has to say before the train wrecks.

Do you know the Rolling Hills Elementary School spot, with the park next to it. It's in this town in Rancho Penasquitos. That's one of the biggests spots around here that i know of, aside from the 3 skate parks in a 20 mile distance :woot:

They are always sketch though more like a 350 and I cant do them straight flatground like I want to. I have to do it off a high ledge so I can have time to spin. </playingshitdown>

Man I'm the same way, I can only do a 270 and have to pivot or powerslide the rest of the way.

Plan on hitting the park this weekend with Biolink.

I hate skating in the heat so I usually hit up some spots during the night, but I was going to work at like 7 am all summer. So I couldnt get no nightime skating in, I needed the sleep.

Ah well that really sucks.

But yeah. Lucky me I'm not that into Sports games. Went to Gamestop 3 times and before my dick could even breathe they asked me if I had preordered Dat Madden yet

Going tomorrow. Hopefully I can get bigger pop on my ollie, and land some kickflips. Might just shred that bowl with all of the OG Skaters as well.

*Two Days ago*

GS employee: So are you going to pre-order Madden?
Black Man: Hell nah, wal-mart gonna have it cheaper
Me: *warm smirk*

*back to skating*

Don't kill yourself trying to get the kickflip down or feel you are any less of a skater for not getting it, it took me forever to land my first one. Practice is important but you are going to waste a lot of time if you just concentrate on flips, there are a wide variety of moves that do not involve flips (most of which actually give you more style points).

-backside 180's look sexy, frontside as well
-a high fakie ollie / nollie
-big spins (360 shove it with body varial)
- POP shove-its look amazing especially when u catch it high
-manual / nose manual'ing a good distance
-power slide

but yeah, kickflips are tough for me. i can do them, but i can't catch them high in the air. for some reason, my heel flips are phenominal. i can almost frontside heel flip / backside heelflip, i can heel flip big step ups, i have done heelflips off of launch ramps, off of small gaps, but kickflips are still tough for me. hell i can even almost backside kickflip

it's all about practice, i just don't practice my kickflips that much, but i should and will

First real week back on the board. I used to skate a whole lot back when I was younger. Around age 14-17 or so. But once I graduated I got plagued by what most skateboarders do. School, work, girlfriend; so I haven't really got to skate in about 2 years or so. Forgot how good it felt to just flow down the street and be able to do a good line of tricks.

Today I drove up to the football field where I spent the majority of my high school days at. I live in a small hick town with nothing but flat really. Just a few curbs, manual pads, and a ledge or two. So i threw my old ledge, flat bar, and manual pad in the back of my jeep and went up there to skate. A bunch of kids where up there. None looked older than 16 or so I backed my jeep up, got out and said whats up. They helped me unload my stuff and started to get the session under way. Everybody was having a good time. Reminded me so much of my High School days.

Then what appeared to be the coach and his family rolled up in his pick up truck and of course parked right in the way of the session. They hopped out and and started to unload the truck for the concession-stand for the football games. The skating kids began to get all pissed and started cussing a the coach (in front of his little girl mind you) and what not and the guy was about to call the cops so I stepped in told the kids to shut the fuck up and offered to help the guy unload his truck. The skater kids looked at me like I was stupid. At first the coach looked at me as if I was trying to trick him or something but then he agreed and I helped him and his family unload the truck and restock the concession-stand. After ten minutes we were done and he said thanks and shook my hand and I said not a problem and apologized for the kids. His wife offered me a case of cold gatorade which I of course took. It was hot as fuck. The coach then went out and moved his truck to the side so we could continue the session.

I rolled out there with a case gatorade and sat down on the curb and started drinking. The kids were all over my balls asking me to give them one but I told them bitches since they didn't help they weren't getting shit unless they went and apologized to the guy for cussing at him in front of his daughter. So one by one they did and the coach said he was sorry for parking in the way and the session continued on the way like normal. The funny thing about it is, had this been 4 or 5 years ago I probably would of done the same thing as the kids. Funny how things change.

Sorry for bumping a old thread and making such a long post. Just this story really reminded me of this thread. Happy skating guys. Thanks for listening.

This was the first real summer back on a board. I never really stopped skating but haven't really had time to really do it on a regular basis, but since I lost my job and decided to go back to school it is like I get a real summer from when I was a kid. But I just moved to a place with covered parking, so there is no stopping me now!

I've been skating for a while but Ive been decent since high school. I never really take anything personal (I also rocked an Africa necklace for like 5 years, so niggas ain't testing my blackness LMAO), I can't recall any straight up hate because I am a black skater. There are instances where I hear "lollercoaster, this nigga fell" or a "look at this nigga trying to be Pharrell" its irritating at worse. I think police give me a harder time because I am black, and I am a lot more reluctant to run from the cops because I know I am the easiest to recognize (or even the only person they chase after).

Honestly I can see why black people use to look at skateboarding so weirdly. As a whole blacks don't do things unless we see our faces on it (we use to have the same mentality with clothing brands). When Tiger Woods became famous a lot of blacks were calling black golfers Tiger Woods, so I guess its only fair.

And before Rob and Big what was the most popular show about skaters? Jackass, Wild Boyz, Viva la Bam, and those cats were on some other shit. What is the most common phrase you hear when black people watch them shows? "Oh, black people wont do that shit." "Them white boys are crazy". So before people realized that people live the skateboarding culture differently, I can understand weird looks.

I've always thought black people generally had way better style. Kareem Cambell, Darrel Stanton, Theotis Beasely, Antuan Dixon... you can't tell whether they're riding switch or taking a nap.

Unfortunatly you have TK as a retarded stereotype.

ah. i remember the " you skate that makes you a oreo" days. man i started skating in 98 and although ive been doing it off and on, i still kept up with the industry. and ppl used to pick on me and my friend all the time, like it was times when i had to skate in nikes because i was afraid to by airwalks and vans. now fast forward a few yrs later and now its the hottest shit since sliced bread. but i admit i kinda miss the old days because there was only a few of us and when we saw a black skater on flim, kats would be like "oh snap" lol

and harold has passed away a while ago. sad to see him go, i remember watching him on old zoo york vids from back in the day.

You gotta give Nike SB props for forcing the other shoe companies to be more creative with their designs/colorways

A tad old, but I had to post because p-rod is looking cool as shit in that photo. It was to the point where I was tempted to buy the deck.

Not only did Footlocker buy CCS mail order, but check out their most recent agenda published in the new Transworld Business mag.

If we don't mobilize soon, our industry is going to be hi-jacked by the sporting goods companies and their chains of distribution. Core skateshops will be a thing of the past.

Support your local skateshops, and encourage them NOT to legitimize the sporting goods companies.

I think its very important to support the mom and dad skateshops, as long as they are more accommodating than big business. If they aren't loving then fuck em IMO.

i'm actually kind of happy about the commercialization. because one thing will lead to another, and hopefully skateboarding will be in the olympics, and there will be more skatepark's around. local skate shops will never die, in my opinion. skate shops aren't just skate shops, they are somewhere u can hang out. i don't think people are going to start hanging out at SportsMart

Skateboarding is getting the respect and innovation it deserves.

Keep in mind that skateboarding has always come in waves of popularity, and this is certainly not the biggest one yet. Once it dies back down, Foot Locker and whoever else are just gonna move on.

I personally got into skateboarding to escape from all the bullshit, and you can't really squeeze that aspect out of it. Just take advantage of nice skateparks and low prices while it lasts who fucking cares.

i think skating was going to be in the olympics or was at least talked about and all the vert skaters got really pissed and said no. I don't think the current industry is going to want to watch it get commercialized like that. People are already pissy about CCS, Jackass, Life of Ryan, the X Games, Tony Hawk and energy drinks, I don't think any further commercialization is going to help the situation, if anything it'll lead to another collapse.

good lookin on that video. so true. im 25 now, and i started skating back in 8th grade, and i distinctly remember the shit talks and what not. although i went to a mostly white school, the group of brothas and sistas was not feelin that shit, but now you fast forward, and cultures are so mixed now, with skating being okay for whoever, jay z done did cd's with linkin park, etc......

its nice to see the ignorance start to fade, but it was kinda cool being different i guess, but im over it. i remember wearing vans, medium white t's, chain wallets, and all that, just doin me, with whatever i could get my hands on, and most of my people were like, vans, fitting shirt, chain wallet? your a cornball son, and now look at em. wearing what i use to wear, because their favorite rappers started doing it. funny how things change

i just skate to cruise now, i aint tryin to be doin tricks like the old days. lol. but i dont think im special, and people should have the opportunity to skate and wear what they wear without being attacked as following a fad. i mean, most shit nowadays has already been done, and is just being rehashed anyways. aint nothin really new anyways. just different people claiming to fame and shit.

we all at one point picked up a board or whatever because of something trivial. i didnt have an enlightening moment that made me skate. i just saw it on the x games, and my best friend was doing it, so i thought, thats cool, i want to do it. so if lupe influenced you to skate, thats cool, son, do you. enjoy the freedom of it.

i love to check bammas about me being a follower though. the assumption amongst our people seems to be that, oh lupe just started that, or jim jones just started that, so i see you doin it now. huh.................................
