I voted yesterday for the Nick Garcia from Long Beach, that kid was ripping it!!!!

I love the kids who pose that they skate.
damn gotta love the posers :lovin:

dammit Im trying to get down these frontside flips.

"Posers" never bothered me. The people who bother me are the dudes who have tantrums because they aren't landing anything . Then they wanna start breaking shit and that's when I get pissed off.

Like that Alex Olsen bit on Fully Flared, I would have hit that nigga.

I have friends like that and its pretty sad because they're grown men acting like a child. I'll admit, I use to do it when I was younger not because I didn't land my trick but because I would eat shit too many times in a row. Then I grew out of that habit after awhile.

Mike Carroll was another one of those dudes that would fuck their boards and shit if I remember correctly from the Fully Flared video. Shooting the board out hitting the camera guy in the head busting him open. :shake:

I am one of those people that stress pretty fucken hard when I skate or whatever. It's usually not cause I am not landing a new trick, but more or less because the shit I am supposed to have on lock is usually not working. So I stress and throw shit and yell at things. But majority of the time, it's usually best just to drop it and quit on the day because you know shit is only going to get worse.

There's activemailorder.com or utilityboardsupply.com. There's just too many to name but those are the primary shops I order shoes from.

Don't u hate it when punks that don't really skate put you on the spot infront of other people? Me and like 4 homies were hanging in the park yesterday smoking some bowls and i had my skateboard with me just to mess around on ya know.

So this one dude is like "oh i used to skate back in the day! i had the kickflips down(probably some stationary bullshit). can u do em'?"

I landed my first kickflip when i was in 5th grade. i can fucking do kickflips in my sleep, but when skateboarding is all about flow and focus. i was not warmed up or in the flow or focused, i was stoned chilling in the park! of course i tried and i couldn't do it properly. putting me on the spot and shit, thats the problem with skateboarding. too many people treat it as a competition, or an "anything you can do i can do better" type of sport.

thats how so many dumbass kids get hurt, they get peer pressured into trying to ollie 6 stairs when they have never even done 3 but their social status in their group of friends depends on it.

well thats my rant

usually you wanna look for decks made by Anti-Hero, Real or Krooked. They make their decks a bit wider. If choose your decks based off of graphics, then you might hate all three

Here are some Santa Cruz decks (http://www.skateparkoftampa.com/spot/shop_productsummary.aspx?CategoryID=1&ManufacturerID=1092)
And there is a pretty wide Duane Peters Model (http://www.skateparkoftampa.com/spot/shop_productdetail.aspx?ProductID=19666)

Is that what you are looking for? if you are looking for normal shapes, you can pretty much get wide decks like that at any shop.

You are better off with loose trucks, honestly. Though it is difficult to balance, through perseverance the balance will come to you naturally. It is much more difficult to do certain tricks where you really need to scoop(tre flips, hard flips, inward heelflips, 180's, frontside/backside tricks) with tight trucks.

You can do these tricks with tight trucks, but if you are thinking of taking them to obstacles like stairs or gaps, you can forget it.

Plus when you are doing tricks you can lean out landings on loose trucks; most professionals ride their trucks loose.

I'll give you an example, skip to the end of the video Prod does a nollie frontside flip over like 10+ stairs(when he is wearing green), and if you watch his landing something like that would have been IMPOSSIBLE with tight trucks, and it's easier on your ankles and knees. See for yourself the benefits of loose trucks

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCikg8LX3WM

I used to ride tight, medium tight, but honestly i felt the hindered effects of tight trucks. I can honestly say loosening up my trucks have improved my skating greatly.

That sucks, I ride loose just because I find it easier to move around and shit. But yeah dude, just ask someone to borrow their skate tool.

You should try a 7.75, those are usually a good size for me. Hell even an 8 is pretty good but 7.5's just kill me.

I'll try to eek it out a little bit longer then with Longer trucks. Long enough to where I can actually start learning some tricks at least.

I skated today. with a bud. only folks out. it was cold as fuck

I know

It's so wrong that the warm weather only lasted for like a millisecond.

I don't really mind it though. Cold weather= Empty Skatepark for me.

On the one half I don't have the help of other Skaters to show me if I'm doing anything right or wrong which kind of sucks because I like Skating it up with other people. On the other half I at least get to perfect what I know how to do without any hindrance

Ride whatever feels comfortable for you, i started out with tight because i just couldn't balance on loose trucks. and i eventually my skating felt so limited and with tight trucks i would always tic-tac landings and turns. then i just loosened up the trucks one day and it felt so good and right, i've never went back

I had to learn how to adjust my trucks the hard way.

Here's an awesome tip though: Use two pivot bushings. (the smaller ones.) Like, if you buy a pack of replacement bushings, keep the old one from closest to the nut, and replace the big fat one at the bottom with the smaller pivot bushing in the pack. You'll turn smoother, and you can tighten up your trucks without locking them down.

If you have good form, it shouldn't matter. If you can level out correctly, you'll land with your gravity centered. But I guess if you can't hit your ollies perfectly, tighter trucks will help my maintain your balance on landing.

does riding loose make tricks easier or harder. like landing an ollie?

It depends mostly on the Skater.

I'd say if you are just starting out it's harder, but that's just me. Loose trucks give you less stability than tighter one's.

Some people might feel more comfortable going into the air with the added stability of tight trucks because it makes them feel more confident

Loose trucks have a lot more give with the landing so it's easier on your ankles, legs, and feet. You get to absorb the contact, and just roll away.

Right now I have crap balance, so it's not as smooth as I want it to be, but eventually I'll get there.

i can't do high ollies at all. all my ollies are fucking low. front foot is ok high but my heel. doesnt go up for shit no matter how much power i hit it down or how high i raise the heel the tail of the board doesnt follow.

Well... hmmm. From what it sounds like, your timing might be off. The tail comes up as high as your nose if you slide your lead foot just slightly after you leave the ground. I know a lot of skaters have this problem to begin with (so did I when I learned how to ollie). I would try to concentrate on the proper technique before trying to go high haha. Any chance you can vid your ollie? It would be easier to critique it if we can see it.

EDIT: Are you at least landing with 4 wheels or do you kind of have a staggered 2 wheel -> 2 wheel landing?

Dunno how you are doing it, but you have to have good timing.

Like some people Pop *Wait 1 second* and then jump and slide.

All of the moves have to be as close as you can get to them to the previous move, so basically as soon as you are popping down as hard as you can you are also doing the other 2 steps. If done right the board should stick to your feet.

I'll try it as soon as I get to the park.

I know the theory on how to do it, but it's just weird as hell and scary.

The point is to get those two front wheels to actually make contact with the wall as soon as possible, so you just dive straight forward in.

Of course when you are nervous the first reaction is to lean back, and then you end up eating shit.

My question is, what's the weight limit before you start brreaking your boards daily lol?

You must have gained a lot of weight lol.

How much weight we talking about?

Anyway I don't think there would be a problem so long as the weight as evenly distributed over the board. It's all about how you ride.

I've seen 250 pound guys riding around and doing tricks with no problem.

Definitely get a bigger sized board though, and maybe something with carbon fiber or fiberglass layers. Loose trucks for sure since it would help absorb the weight.

you're going to need a month or two to break in your body. that's the problem with being bigger, u fall harder.

breaking boards is apart of the process IMO. that's how you learn how to land on the bolts, at least for me. for a little while i had a bad habit of always landing my backfoot on the tail and snapping it, but i just learned to do otherwise.

That'd be sweet :woot:

Went Skating today, and I was fucking stinking up the joint.

I think I need to train more in the basics before I move on to tricks suffice to say.

The only basic thing I really have left to learn as far as riding around goes is kickturning.

I'm still ollieing like shit(Little ollies where the board maybe leaves 3 inches off the ground). Can't shuv-it either.

I tried to shuv-it today, and I got a varial kickflip instead HA

Yeah it's all fundamentals. Height and style come with practice. Make sure you can push good. Nothing looks worse than somebody trying to do a trick or a stair set or something and they look like a fucken clown riding up to it.

Went skating today for the first time in a week or so. Works been kicking my ass. Went to this little spot we call Jerusalem. Dunno why. It's about a waist high loading dock and a big bank to the right of that you can pop into and get haul ass. First time I've skated any kid of drop in a long time. Threw down the normal shit. Ollied it. Nollied it. FS/BS180'd it. Switch ollied. Kickflip 2nd try so I was like fuck, shit is working today. Ended up putting down 360 flip in 10 tries or so. Shit was so buttery too. Better than my normal ones on flat. Made my day. Put down a FS flip too but mine look like I'm twelve years old and shit. No pop and low catch. Shit is nasty. But that went down too. Been a good day.

you're going to need a month or two to break in your body. that's the problem with being bigger, u fall harder.

breaking boards is apart of the process IMO. that's how you learn how to land on the bolts, at least for me. for a little while i had a bad habit of always landing my backfoot on the tail and snapping it, but i just learned to do otherwise.

http://vimeo.com/1892972?pg=embed&sec=1892972

a few fatboys in this vid are ripping it, and just having a good time.

Im currently 285 lol, after I had to pick up weight to play offensive line, but Ill be back down around 245~260 before I would even try again.

I ride my trucks tight as fuck. Like I seriously can't even turn unless I kickturn. I try skating on loose trucks and can't control anything, my board goes apeshit and I ride full speed into posts and bustops. I find that looser trucks helps with landings though, less of the board whipping out from under me and more barely-landed-but-still-landed tricks. It helps a lot because my landings have always been hella sketchy. But still, I'd rather be able to control what direction I'm heading in at a moderate speed than be able to land stuff more consistantly.

Also, does anyone else here ride 7 inch boards? I like to skate 7s with Tensors because it lines up better in rail. I find that 7.5's on Tensors gives this wonky slant which can throw me off sometimes, and also it grinds down the bolts on an angle so it fucks them up, and the slant gets perpetually worse. I'm too poor to buy new trucks that often. Good 7 inch boards can be hard to find though.

Damn at Danny Way though. Dude his a fucken monter though. He will be back for sure.

And 7inch boards? How do you ride that shit? I have small feet (size 9 shoes) and I still ride 7.80-8.00 inch boards. More control and makes my tricks look cleaner. I used to ride 7.5's about a year ago but my tricks suffered. It just felt like I was getting my feet off the board too fast and causing my flip tricks to be low and my pops all wonky. So I started riding bigger boards and it fixed the problem.

Hell yeah, I am 6'3" 6'4"ish, 190lbs and a size 13 shoe. Anything less than an 8 is suicide on my part, in fact I was thinking about getting me one of those 8.2 or 8.4 decks Real makes.

krackerjack
11-27-2008, 03:42 AM
Yeah, my feet are size 10, so I guess it's managable. But aside from lining up better in rail I find my board flips easier too, like for double and triple heelflips and junk. I just have more maneuverability when I'm throwing 360 flip anticaspers and whatnot, there's no way I could do that shit on a big ole 8+ inch deck. It also helps that I basically just purely stick to tech flatland, so I don't have to worry about skating at skateparks and ramps and dodgy streets and shit on a tiny board. If I did then yeah, I'd probably use a 7.5+.

I never liked Royal's. I had two pairs. One I just flat out grinded down to the kingpen. The other both kingpens broke on me within a few weeks of buying them. I've been riding the same pair of Krux lowdown's for almost a year now. Really light. Unlimited clearance on the king pen and turns great. Indy's are the best, Royals are shit and the baseplate will fail you

Ah, Chicago sucks for that.

The city is the 3rd largest in the United States and we don't have an b Arcade fighter scene(People's houses in Chicago are the new Arcades). The closest arcade is a two hour train ride away in a Chicago outskirt suburb. No indoor Skate parks in Chicago(Except one exclusive Park that I'll be Skating at), non-existant BMX scene.

its easier to get tricks with a bmx to a certain level. as well as massachusetts has tons of shit to grind...and you can escape police alot easier on a bike.

In Philly I heard its the worst. My boy told me theres mad undercovers everywhere in the city and all around LOVE park. It used to be impossible to even get near LOVE on a skateboard. The new mayor is a lot more lenient, though. You can actually get a good 2 hour sesh around LOVE before pigs come now.

Need help ollieing while moving.

My stationary is respectable. I think, it'll be much higher while moving, but I'm having commitment problems. Best I can do, is pop some pain pills, and throw in a mouth piece for a psychological boost.

Maybe if it was warmer I'd feel more bold, but it's about 35 degrees outside.

Nigga ain't trying to hit the ground when it's that cold outside

Biolink
12-30-2008, 02:34 PM
Okay.

Your favorite nigga is now ollieing

My stationary ollies are fucking on point. I usually get about a 1 foot and 6 inches off the ground on my stationary ollie without bothering to pop as hard as I can and suck as high as I can. I've suck in higher and I've hit 2 feet+, but I just want to work on getting the basic form down before going bigger.

Don't know why I had so many problems with this trick. I could be so much farther along, if I was this dedicated 5 months ago

I'm still having problems with moving ollies, but those will come with trial and error.

Where you mofos at?

I need help.

Like how do you get used to moving tricks? I'm trying to learn the moving ollie, since I can do it stationary and I don't want to waste time.

How do I do the basic shuv-it btw(Not POP shuv-it, but just a regular 70's style shuv-it)?

I either get it 90 degrees, or I overspin it and it keeps turning. I'm not even thinking about landing it. I need the damn thing to spin 180 degrees first

Best way I can tell you to get used to doing moving tricks is to just get used to rolling over things, controlling your board, turning. Riding off of curbs, low drops, etc. Its good to be familiar with basic board control. Riding off of drops will give you a better foundation for when it comes time to catch tricks in the air.

MaDWaK
12-31-2008, 06:42 PM
well the main key is practice. back in the day i remember trying that shit and thinking it was nearly impossible. with ollieing just make sure ur shoulders are square with the board and commit to it. start with one short push and try it. then with one good push, then with 2, then with 3 etc... ( thats how i learned most basic tricks.) with shuvits same thing goes, but make sure you get that spin right. you can catch it still if its a little overspinned or underspinned, so its mostly about that spin your comfortable with.

EDIT: and yeah, final_cut is right. make sure all the basic board control is almost 2nd hand bafore you try to get your tricks down. bomb drops off curbs definately do help.

tindiamond
12-31-2008, 06:44 PM
It just takes practice man. You'll get use to it for sure. I had the same problem when I learned to ollie as well. But after awhile you should get it down. Don't practice tricks stationary anymore, it slows progress sooooooooo much.

For the shuv it, just give the tail a little scoop. After you land you're going to realize how stupid and easy it is. haha

Hahaha I'll have to try Shuv-it tomorrow.

I watched some tutorial video, turns out I was pushing my front foot the wrong way. I didn't know you had to push both feet in opposite directions.

I was kicking both feet in the same direction, so the board had one crazy ass spin in one direction. Let's try Round 2 tomorrow... In some grass.

On second thought, maybe I should do it on the sidewalk. Gotta get used to moving tricks at some point, even if I will be moving slow as hell.

Skating is getting a lot more fun now. Knowing that, I'm close to actually learning the fun stuff, people try spend forever trying to learn, and ultimately end up quitting skate boarding, because it's too hard.

If you actually spend the time, and practice. Shit's not hard at all. Goddamn I wish I was practicing like a mad man, when it was actually warm outside. I guarantee I'd know how to kickflip right now. I feel like shooting myself, when I was stressing over not being able to Ollie, and now the shit's so easy(Stationary at least), it's like "Damn, WTF was I doing all of that time?".

Oh yeah, is there any good way to learn how to Manual?

I guess I can see if I can knock Manuals out of the way as well, since I'm just now getting into the core of the basics of skateboarding.

yeah thats wat skating is all about, progress.

i would recommend u start working on your riding more and developing your balance. start bombing hills amd stuff like that. also loosen up your trucks to the point in which u can take turns without tick-tacking.

as for manuals, you should be practicing tricks like this simultaneously throughout your whole skate seshes.

never focus or get stuck on a single trick, a skateboard has infinite possibilities. don't limit yourself to a small arsenal of tricks. a lot of people make this mistake with kickflips/ heelflips. they learn one and get complacent and discourage themselves, but i just laugh at these kids when they fail miserably at heelflips in a game of skate.

i was like that when i was a kid, i could bang out kickflips but my heelflips were very inconsistent.

when i got older, i lost the kickflip and gained uber heelflip skills, but i got the kickflip back thank god (but not as good as my heelflip still).

right now i'm suffering, i can bang out frontside pop shuvits but i'm inconsistent with bs pop shuv its, i needa practice.

I'm so fucking mad I'm about to go outside, and try shuvits on the sidewalk so that I at least accomplish something, today.

I can do stationary ollies well enough to get about a foot off the ground, but moving ollies own the shit out of me. I whiff retardedly on the pop, and in the back of my mind I'm telling myself I'm going to try and pop and end up leaning back too far and eating shit

Me and some friends have just recently got back into skating and I'm having so much fun. I'm far more adventurous with what I try to learn than I was when I skated as a kid. I've improved heaps over such a short period. Bought some new trucks (cheapo speed demon), bearings (Bones Reds, of course) and sick Darkstar wheels. At the moment the only things I can do smoothly and consistently (well besides ollies, manuals and stuff) are 180s but at the rate I'm learning that won't be for long.

I don't know how SB's fit compared to 6.0's, but I do know that SB's come smaller, so it's recommended that you size up a half size if you can.

Not sure about 6.0's.

Err if you got any Skate shops in your city, I'd go to one that carries SB's and 6.0's and try them on.

It's important that you get the right size, and your shoes fit snuggly around your feet. I made the mistake of coughing up 85 bones for some P-Rod 2's, that were loose, and felt too big for me to Skate. Never again
