Word of advice
Im no expert at skating but I enjoy myself. You can find tiptricks virtually anywhere on the net. Skating is pretty much balance, timing and commitment. If you cant do a trick you are probably lacking one of those three.

<3 Skateboarding. I can only do a fraction of the things I was able to do several years ago, but can't beat the thrill.
Anyways, my setup:
Deck: Generic 7.75 Blank w/ Black Magic grip tape (never really a fan of brand boards)
Wheels: Toy Machine monsters 54mm
Trucks: Independent regulars (I hate riding on lows)
Bearings: Bones Reds (fuck paying $40+ dollars on Black Bones Swiss bearings; pretty much exactly the same for 1/2 the price)
Risers: some blue Habitat
Hardware: generic phillips hardware (again, no need for brand hardware)
Shoes: Usually some regular Vans or Circas
360 flips and Laser flips > any flip trick

Usually i skate school hallways that have overhangs. they tend to provide shade and good bench areas to hit up. Also there is the whole skate with lighter clothes, shorts and nice alleys where the heat doesnt bunch up.
Also you gotta have gatorade or some sort of beverage. all this talk about skating makes me want to go skate.

Hey, do you remember a pro Named Barry Floyd? he's of my good friends and my girlfriend's uncle, actually. we used to skate all the time at Kona, I remember he did pretty well at a few trashmore contests back in the day. I remember hearing about that time people were saying gator raped a maid at the hotel, but he said 'its a misunderstanding' and they were working it out. wtf. dude was crazy near the end. (of his free life anyway)
Anyway, I ran/run a skate zine called "Alley-Oop!" that I put out when I feel like it, and I used to be the editor of 904Skate here in jacksonville. I mainly shoot photos and write editorial now, but I skate at least twice a week and with my kids about every other week.

nah, I don't remember a lot of the big names from back then, the only reason I remember Bam was because his name was "Bam".
If I've EVER seen Gator skate, I didn't know who he was (though I used to watch skaters every weekend at Trashmore) at the time, and only really knew about who he was after he was arrested.

I've skated for about 5-6 years before stopping (full time work and full time school @.@). Just got a new setup and I plan on skating around the neighborhood again at least~ I remember back in the day when every trick I could do regular I could do switch (on the ground at least).
Keep on the lookout for Shaun Gregoire (Birdhouse AM). I used to skate with this (http://youtube.com/watch?v=RFn3qjdB_WA) guy.
I have some shitty complete bought at a crappy record/skate/smoke shop. It probably is a sporting goods complete and so the store bought it, threw in a sticker pack and got a sucker like me to buy it as a legit skateboard. The deck has no pop what so ever, but I mostly skate the local micro pipe anyway that is if I am skating at all and not on my bmx. My bmx on the other hand, that's custom built by me.
Speaking of John Cardiel his part part in Sight Unseen is one of my favorite parts(besides the earlier Toy Machine videos) Check it out:

Been skating since I was 13. 18 Now. Still going strong. Still having fun. So overjoyed to click on the topic and the first video I see is John Cardiel part. Amazing skater. Legendary part.
I got two favorite skaters who I really look up to their attitude. First being Tom Penny. Amazing skateboarder. Most graceful flip tricks ever. Best FS Flip both regular and switch. Completely lazy style. He is so good but the entire time it looks as if he is just messing around as if he doesn't care that he even there or something.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yQK2wgAwas
Second being Jeremy Wray. Very powerful style yet still very technical. Huge pops on everything and yet still buttery smooth. Guy has been beasting for years and still remains one of the best street skaters. Check out his part from second hand smoke.

Jamie Thomas' part from Welcome to Hell is still the part I watch to get me hyped to throw myself down some shit. The opening runs is easily one of my favorites. So good. Just looks as if it is a a part of his every day thing or something. Just cruising down the street. It's runs like that is what makes a good part imo. Not some *insert grind*, 360flip, *insert grind* then it's over. Some people can make it look good but a lot of times it just looks like filler.

06-22-2007, 11:28 PM
It took me a good week to learn how to kickflip. I just learned to STOMP on the board when the board flipped to the grip tape side of the board. Heel flips, is another story, it took me seriously almost a year to get those shits down for some reason. It took me like 3 months just to get the board to flip all the way. Something about kicking with my heel part of my feet was just something my brain would not tell my feet to do correctly. I would kick it and the board would just fly like 5 feet in front of me. I got down my 360 flips before I could even put one foot on a heel flip.
I never really liked grinding rails, well, for the most part, ROUNDED rails. I find it very difficult to just grind on one for no more than a quarter of a second before I start losing my balance or already bailing out of the board. I like my rails flat and squared....that or random ledges.
Oh and like Josh Kasper, I was always a HUGE fan of ollieing off big ass shit (ledges, stairs, etc.)
MrBuster
06-22-2007, 11:32 PM
^^^ When you hit rails all you got to do is just relax and do go stiff legged because you will over correct and bail the trick. I know it may soind dumb, but you have to somewhat chill on the rail to hold the trick down.

Also, if you want to learn how to kickflip, just go on the grass and try...it actually works, lol.

I was much more of a grinder though. I loved doing 50-50s and 5-0s near the apartment I used to live at...damn, that street got fucked up, rofl.
The only thing I couldn't do was board slide a circular rail :crybaby:
I would somehow put too much weight on one side and pwn myself.
I wish I still skated - I weighed like, 130, when I was still skating. Then after about 2 years of not skating, I went up to 180 :xeye:
Skating was a great way to keep in shape, but getting hurt sucked ass...lol.

Impossibles used to be damn near impossible when they were first popular, cause of those big ass boards and crap.

The way I learned kickflips, my main problem was I could never get the front foot back on to the board. Later I found out this was because I was flicking down and not out, so I got a blank deck with no trucks and just practiced on that. I would try to flick and just flip the board half way over and land on it with both feet. Once I got that down took it to a real board and landed it in a few tries. Still can't get them to look the way I want them, but I got them every try.

now learn front foot impossibles. kids around here had never seen one until i popped one at the new park they just built. too funny. they may learn their tech shit, but seeing them tryin to melon over a can is too good. oh well different generations. just glad that old shit is a part of most pro's trick set these days. It seemed to disappear for a long while there.

Skateboarding use to be my life back in 01-03. Tournaments started creeping up and before I knew it, I hadn't set foot on a board in years.
But now that I got a job, and more importantly - a car, I 've thinking about getting back into it again. I was decent enough, and one of the few vert skaters out here at the time.
Thing is, im too lazy to relearn. I'm sure I can still ollie(which was a journey in itself learning...I'll be damned if I ever forget)...but everything else

I skated mongo for almost 7 years.. Bad thing was that I had less time to set up for a trick (anything off tables or small ledges with no space were hard for me), but I did have a lot more control of the board when pushing.

Snowboarding :looney:
Is it easier or harder?
Snowboarding :looney:
Is it easier or harder?
ya know...their is a bit of a transition period. i would say alot harder....because your locked into the board. Your using alot of different muscles than a skateboard. you use more thigh muscle but on a skateboard its more ankle muscle. harder to turn cause its almost like using your lead foot and even though its locked it...u move it to move the board.
skateboarding, in just a riding sense is alot easier. but i think tricks would be easier on a snowboard since u use speed and gravity for your advantage.
i'm a bit weird cause i ride goofy and regular and i constantly switch when im snowboarding. like i do a lil dogtown style snowboarding when i will lean low into turns and use my hand to slow me down and switch sides. lol.

turning is different but will be an easier transition than say someone who never skateboarded before. also you will already know your a goofy or regular because of your stance on a skateboard. stopping is completly different. that will feel alien at first. crashing is about the same...though i think it might be more dangerous on a snowboard due to it being attatched to your ankles. i though i broke my butt last friday when i crashed lol. ollies are easy.
wuts also different....alot more people on basic mountains. like because its sooo fucking mainstream everyone does snowboarding...its whored out to the max. old moms and lil kids snowboard. so you gotta deal wit them plus skiers who already hate us.
snowboarding is alot smoother due to the surface but when u crash...it fucking hurts. this would be on smaller mountains wit more compact snow for smoothness...bigger mountains have bigger fluffier snow..but im not at that level to be fucking wit black diamond stuff.

It'll take a day or two to maneuver correctly on the skateboard. I encourage you to fall because it'll get rid of the fear early.
All tricks depend on how determined you are to learn them shits. It took no more than a week for me to pop good ollies, but it took me about a year to kickflip because I just didn't think I could do it. I know cases where it took forever for someone to learn how to ollie but the kickflip was natural.
Another thing that took me forever to realize is skating is more than ollies kickflips and grinds. Learn some shoveits and boneless and other quircky moves, they give you style.

Nollies you can pick up on your own, just make sure you aren't doing fakies (which is a regular ollie but your skateboard is going backwards). Someone had to tell me how to do correct manuals and even then they required mad practice.

I can frontside air ok, but not grind. when I get both trucks on the coping in frontside posistion, I'm fucked, like I'm gonna fall down the ramp. On ledges and street stuff, though, I can ONLY grind frontside. Well, except for k grinds, but those don't really count anymore.
Speaking of ramps, if you learn how to ride on small mellow mini ramps, working your way from the bottom, learning how to pump transition, turn, and whatnot, it'll make learning to control your board on street surfaces a lot easier.

Yeah, man, Tony Hawk is more like the fuckin' Jeff Hornacek of skateboarding. Sure, he's makin' some money, but god, sometimes he looks a fucking kook. I dunno. Maybe MJ is an accurate comparison... I mean he is right there on the box of Bagel Bites at the store, is featured in like 10 videogames or something, he appears in commercials for everything from breakfast cereal to deodorant...
The difference is how the people who are into skateboarding look at him. Talking about his style. I mean you can call Tony Hawk a sellout or whatever, but here are some key points.
1. The 900. One of what, two people that have ever done it? 3 if you count D. Way?
2. Do you call Shaq a sellout for appearing in Radioshack commercials? Ok bad example. Do you call Lance Armstrong a sellout for being in a USPS commercial?

Do you call Lance Armstrong a sellout for being in a USPS commercial?
haha them fools got bills to pay. he's got a family...i dont consider him a sellout when he didnt sellout his initial reasons for becoming a boarder. sellingout to me, means you had this totally different mentality when u started and exchange it for money. but this can easily be confused with just growing up and having more responsibilities.
Biolink: kook=bum
Black Chanler: thought u meant image wise not skill wise....well i sorta got the impression. but really mj changed the image of the sport but not exactly on the style it was played...that more belongs to guys who came to the nba playing from the streets like kobe, vince carter, and allen iverson. so my streetball analogy still stays. mj changed how people viewed the sport and was a rebel but didnt play the actual mechanics of the game beyond more dunks.

Yeah, Tony Hawk really did change the way skateboarding was going, in a major way. He basically invented the vert ollie. Well, actually it was Allen Gelfand who did it, but TH would ollie into every single trick he did cuz he was a small guy, he couldn't get enough speed to pump his way into high airs like the bigger dudes in that time. He got fucked with hard, but now you don't even see people doing airs without ollies unless they are in a pool or something.
Tony Hawk changed vert, Mullen changed street skating, so yeah, either one is good.
Rodney Mullen was actually the first pro I ever saw in person, I remember making fun of his socks. I remember my brother was like " I didn't come to watch some goofy kid do a dance, lets go skate!" We had never even seen anyone freestyle skate before.
Edit: Dammit, I sound like a freakin' almanac. I really should be working right now.
fuck you snow..i wanna go skateboarding..and fuck you impending snow..and fuck this snow on my screen.

No, dude, he has always just been lanky as hell. You can tell how skinny and tall he is when he tucks for a spin and then stands back up, he's like Jack Skellington. Back in the day he used to look super fragile, he was just a super tiny kid. He turned pro when he was really young, too.

Just find someone who likes you and is willing to pay you some money to get into a contest or put you in an ad, basically. Pro just means you get paid, there isn't really an organized union or anything, no NBA or NFL. (I mean I think the XGames tried to do some thing where you could only skate in their contests or something, which was a mistake) I mean you could pretty much just say you are a pro, and there you are.

Just try out an 8" and see how it feels. As long as the board you're using is comfortable then it doesn't really matter what size. The main reason I'm suggesting 8" though is because they're easier to find compared to bigger sizes.

it just depends on what kind of grind/slide you want to do. if you hit the rail with your trucks it's a grind, if you hit it with your board it's a slide. after that it just depends on the position. if you're just starting out i would recommend trying boardslides on rails and noseslides on ledges. 50-50's (both trucks on rail) are pretty easy to learn on ledges as well.
as for blanks it's a pretty good deal, when i was skating often i would snap at least one board a week. don't know when they got so cheap though. cheapest i've seen is $25 w/o grip.

what kind of styles do you guys skate? (and for the guys just starting, what are you interested in?)
i really like freestyle skating. since when i started all i had was the tennis court flatland to skate in. eventually i found a park and can do stuff like pogo stalls on quarter-pipes and darkslides. boneless is also the best trick ever invented. eventually i started skating stairsets and whatnot but it just isn't as creative (but fun nonetheless).
anyone here into vert? as awesome as it is it's just so hard to find a good park nowadays.

Just street for me, there's no good parks where I'm at so I just roll around downtown hitting up spots that look like fun.
I dunno.maybe around 4 or 5 bucks on Regular shipping, maybe a lil more or less.
I don't have Paypal yet,so I wouldn't be able to pay the shipping to you though :(
well if you can think of a way to do this, maybe we can work sumtin out.

I'm so jealous of everyone that can skate year round. I only get about 4 or 5 months of decent skate time a year here ><!
If you have a Garage or shaded porch you could build some round rails and boxes to skate off of.

I skate street. I guess my style is more of technical street skating style.
I do ALOT of manual variations.

That is funny. One time my cousin (who is a woman of 39 years of age) saw me trying to learn hardflips or something and started making fun of me. She's this total soccer mom type... but yeah she was like "all these years and you still can't skate for shit" and I was like what the hell do you do? nail filing competitions? and she was like "let me see that stupid looking thing". she stood on my skateboard and was like "your trucks are too loose" (I basically ride with them as loose as they will go without falling off)
Then she pops it up into Primo stance, does one of those freestyle kickflips, and then does like 3 freestyle spins... I was just like WTF. Turns out her ex husband that I didn't know used to be a semi-pro freestyler and they had a surf/skate/wake shop together, and she would compete in freestyle comps in the 80s.

But yeah, that would be a great scenario to meet up with some skaters. There's a bunch of guys at the indoor park.so if/when I get a car it would be great to meet up with them, and then network from there.

I was all into skating when the first tony hawk came out and I got this wal-mart star wars board. I thought it was going to be easy and I couldn't even do an ollie. I hyper cancelled for a LONG time and stopped. I saw some vids recently, and I thought I still had a chance, so I decided to go to the local board shop to get a deck. The guy was DICK and he laughed and said I was too old to start skating, and I did feel a lil silly, there were all these 12 year olds and I'm 20, but I still can't believe that dick said that, I got this habitat complete because I didn't (and to a degree, still don't know much about the technical stuff about the board) and I've been boarding since. It's nice now, I finally figured out ollies, I can sorta kick/heel flip and 360. im nowhere near where I want to be, but hopefully I'll get there. I don't know any skaters personally, but I guess it's because I don't want to embarrass myself in front of people who have been doing it for 5-10 years. Hopefully I'll get there, but boarding is awesome, I recommend it to anyone, I think anyone can board, don't let some *** tell you you can't.
