The best part is that they still expect that you'll have your car.

Step 1) Park a car on the coast of England.
From what I understand about Google, they're a fucking badass company. They make all of this just great shit (Google Earth, Google Search Engine), and provide it free to the world. They said they were going to have wireless internet access up ALL OVER CALIFORNIA by 2010. Free.
They don't have any public spokespersons, they just have an incredibly modern-thinking environment. They hire the best people in the Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, etc. fields and give them things to help them work. For instance, Microsoft gives their employees energy drinks to keep them awake and working. Google teaches their employees to understand what their body actually needs to stay alert physically and mentally. They give them specific fruits and whatnot.
I'd love to work for them. They're also possibly the first big logo that I trust.

They make TONS of money.
somehow.
I haven't quite figured out how providing so much cool free shit translates to buckets of cash.
but I guess, once I do, I'll be set to rival Google, now won't I?

Google is top-tier indeed.
Google, from my understanding, hire top-tier people as well, people who actually know their stuff as oppose to scrubs with high GPA (high GPA does not correlate to knowledge/intelligence)

Is this old wives tales or can you provide evidence to further cement your statement?

Google makes tons of money with their adwords program. we have people at my job whos only task to preform is to write those annoying google ads for customers. those ads you see before you log on to the forums on srk, or the ones you see on the right when you make a search.

Thats a false on the phd thing. A friend of a friend got a job offer there, and I don't think he had even graduated from college. Degrees in the software industry mean less than they do in most other fields. I think most of the time, if you want an interview as an engineer, you need a masters, or something really kick ass on your resume.
What the hell would a secretary get a phd in anyway?

Google are probably the best people to work for. Almost made me consider changing my major. But even if I went to CS and all the other computer stuff, I doubt I'd get hired by them. Damn those guys have it made.

It's ironic you are the one using that smile. Acting like that when called on something, only proves you to be even more foolish .

Google, from my understanding, hire top-tier people as well, people who actually know their stuff as oppose to scrubs with high GPA (high GPA does not correlate to knowledge/intelligence)That's really old news in the computer field... degrees are nice, but computer science is an applied art. When I interview people (for MS), I quickly scan their resume (usually I only care about their areas of proficiency) and then just interview/analyze their brain for an hour.
but these guys are so fuckin smart... they talk like they do this and that, come late, play volleyball, blah blah... It's about 11:20PST right now (I was reading a good book last night), and I'll be taking my shower in a bit and then heading into work. My boss works out of Olympia and only shows up two days a week, one guy works out of Virginia so only comes in one week a quarter... it generally makes sense that if you can produce given your own schedule, go for it.
I won't be heading to the MS sports fields (soccer (often used for ultimate frisbee), baseball, sand volleyball) because I'll be busy, but -- yeah, those are nice amenities.
I do like the new style of employers who provide so much more in terms of employee benefits and flexibility.
I don't like that Google relies on selling advertising to make $$$. I highly prefer the offline/direct PC. They do make some excellent products though, and I'm glad they're still keeping Deja around in life support mode.

Purported "Life at Google" from an ex-Google, supposedly filtered through the analytical lens of MSFT: http://no2google.wordpress.com/2007/06/24/life-at-google-the-microsoftie-perspective/ It seemingly focuses strongly on the positives and negatives so that anyone reading can learn and make their area better. There's a variety of comments to the post with further reading about similar jobs at other companies.
Slashdot article on the subject: http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/06/27/1314219
It seemed kind of interesting/relevant if people are curious about this subject.
If this truly DID come from internal emails, the employee is subject to being fired. Internal-only emails are ... internal-only. I used to have just a webcam from my desk, and got a warning about that.
