No one, and that was my point. You stereotype people based on appearance all the time. You would look at someone dressed in thug or biker gang attire and stereotype them as someone who would find anime stupid, or that dropped out of high school, or that is just plain ignorant.

Someone dressing like a "thug" obviously wants to look like a thug. And there's no exception to that (unless maybe they just don't have anything else to wear), the only thing is that we might confuse dress styles with one another.

But the color of someone's skin isn't a style and it doesn't theoretically say anything about that person. The only reason some race groups may seem alike is because we pretend that race matters. Race is just genetics... stereotyping people with blue eyes is just as pointless.

Stereotypes are necessary to exist in day to day life. If we didn't have stereotypes, it'd be almost impossible to function. Stereotypes are what help prevent you from walking up to a heavily tattooed Hells Angel and asking him if he has a copy of Naruto to loan you. There are good and bad stereotypes; everyone uses both regardless of what they claim, some moreso than others. People stereotype southerners as ignorant rednecks, Californians as gay liberal pussies.

Sure, there's some physiological differences when it comes to the various outside, supposedly even going all the way down to the bone, and there's obvious telltale signs like all black people having huge dick-sucking lips, but it's that concept is really there to make life far more "convenient" at least on a visual level, especially in a so-called "melting pot".

I mean, look at the term "Asian" for the moment. Is that really a race? Is there really something that ties all the people on the "continent" of Asia together? Even just one single thing that makes it so that all the Russians and all the Indians and all the Chinese and all the Japanese and all the Laotians and Filipinos and what not are "Asian"?

We'll definitely want to avoid Russians as well or the fact that China and Japan, just to grab each other, not only hate each but have their own internal minorities that are also Asian but don't look like the majority in that nation. (In the case of Japan, I speak of Ainu; think Nakoruru. Chinese has more far more significant minorities than that, especially with all that land and the mountains that its long-standing Islamic minorities.)

There's plenty of truth to the notion that we have to live by stereotypes to function. Certain stereotypes are useful, so long as they are based in reality.

I don't believe Weeks was talking about when he said that we need stereotypes to function that he was talking about those racial stereotypes, especially when agreed with several anti-racist sentiments there after (and we've both been here long enough to know that's it unlikely he was just saving face).

But, of course, that's what you're getting at, Shador: Why the fuck would I side with someone over you when said someone is seemingly not-on-topic?

It's probably due to a very minor thing (and I will admit that I might have misread what you elaborated with more clarity here) when it comes to me viewing things as unconveniently synonymous.

As I asked at the very bottom of what was supposed to be my own racial stereotype counter example, one I believe that's valid for "functioning" or, rather, (and this is the interpretation of my that probably causes our "problems") simplyifing our lives/realities, why would anyone care would somehow someone else was functioning in regard to a "love life" (or lack thereof) that is based primarily on everyday experiences?

I mean, sure, the original thread poster's not "right" in simplifying that "all black women are ghetto, and bitches", at least when it comes to everywhere. However, in his situation, he sees it as true and it doubtless is (to him). He's not even to attempt to change it (at least directly), which is what he's largely been bombarded with, but if it was "bad".

And, really, is it "bad" to use "stereotypes" so that we function in way that will make the seemingly most efficient use of one's limited time (if we're not hurting anyone [important])? I mean, I'm sure you say again that you're depriving yourself of options, but I ask again if that doesn't mean more options for other people.

But, hell, the original poster's initial post was confusing and wasn't detailed; he didn't even say why he didn't like Black women until he hinted at it later. All the "ghetto bitch" stuff came from other posters IIRC--I don't feel like looking back through the thread at this moment.

This is why I do not fault you for replying as you did, especially since you kept it civil outside of yours and Weeks' (still existent?) spat.

yes Weeks, Damned, et al, stereotypes are fine and help us define our world, sure. the next logical step is to choose our preferences based upon those (ostensibly true) definitions. but if the OP truly believes that All black women are like the ones he sees, then he is extrapolating the stereotype into a universal in which there are no deviations from the rule - which is pure essentialism (as if all black women have some sort of inner, unalterable "essence" that necessarily makes him unattractive to them or vice versa).

i'm willing to go to the end of the road with The Damned and not cast judgement on someone who has an explicit and open preference for women who are not of his own race. but thats only because i can see where race and moral judgements tend to intersect where they perhaps shouldn't; and not everyone is comfortable with that type of thinking.
