View Full Version : A different type of fighting gamer stereotype.

I've thought about this a lot of and on, but the other stereotype threads made me decide to share this.
It seems there's some common aspects of players with certain fighting games. Of course, there are exceptions to every stereotype, but these seem universal for the most part.
3rd Strike player:
Complete stoner. Usually hippyish looking (long hair, beards.) These guys can sit at home all day with a dime bag and figure out every single normalfrom every character that will beat Chun's c.mk, clean (then forget it all later.) They can play with stick AND pad because "have you ever played Urien with a pad... on weed?" I also always hear these people say, "wanna chief and play some 3s?" and they also think they play better high.
Marvel player:
I don't know why, but it usually seems like Marvel is nothing but some legit hustlers (cause I'm sure some are) and some not-so-legit wanna be gangsters. These dudes take this game as serious as possible and either put up some real money to play or talk WAY too much shit. These dudes ALWAYS represent their local arcade/scene and usually create the most drama for their respective game.
Guilty Gear player:
Younger goth anime nerds. These dudes are usually pad scrubs and think there game is freaking SACRED or something. Usually roll in pretty tight nit groups for fear of being seen and beat up by the Marvel players. A lot of them are know-it-all smart asses and argue about shit you don't care about (ie, how to pronounce character names.) These players have been known to ban THE dumbest shit from certian GG tournies like "joysticks" and Millia's "hair move." lol
Super Turbo player:
Thirty-something married man that barely has time to make it to tourneis, but somehow convinces his wife this is the "last one" he's attending. Usually the most normal looking of all the fighting game players and always talk about "the good old days." These dudes usually play CvS2, too. I don't know why.
I play all of these games and I know these aren't true for everyone, but this is something I've noticed out of most of the players I see.
Anyone else notice any other stereotypes like this?

the nerdiness of a game's scene is inversely proportional to the number of black people in it
seriously, i dont get it. take any white guy into comic books, video games, anime or whatever and on average (not always but usually) theyll be terribly dressed, unwashed and socially awkward. take black guys into those same things and you get like, ghostface killah, mf doom, del... WHY DONT YOU PEOPLE KNOW HOW TO BE NERDY RIGHT
(RedBeard)

Most of the Guilty Gear players I've met aren't "anime fags", or goth for that matter, on the East Coast. Heh I find the whole Marvel=Big bad bully, GG=Skinny little nerd who gets his lunch money stolen comparison hilarious because it's really not like that.
I think the reason Guilty Gear players come off as thinking their game is "SACRED" is because the game gets bashed all the fucking time for no reason and it's actually a good fighting game if someone took the time to learn it.
One thing you're right about though is that GG seems to have more pad players than any other game :crybaby:

At least like over half of the top US GG players are black lol. I know of people like what was mentioned, but they're all anime con scrubs. 3S is the biggest game in NC and I don't know anyone that fits with the hippy thing. Marvel's just mainly hype, not so much gangster shit.
I think GG having more pad players is just a symptom of it being the younger generation's game. most GG players, as far as I've seen, got into competitive gaming with GG and so they never really had a foundation in arcades/playing stick.
I'm pretty much like that...aside from a little XvsSF and mvc1 when I was younger. Most of the good players around here are stick-only...I'm one of the few decent pad players. Some characters require a stick, imo (I-no, Robo Ky, Johnny..)
You know i gotta say, from my experience people who r usually big fighting game nerds tend to be the most well rounded and diverse folks i know. Almost all the guys in my area r either in university, have active social live good jobs and even in some case"girlfriends". Gaming is like literally something on the side, we only ever play like once or twice a month. I havnt really noticed this for like other groups of nerds, like RPG or FPS nuts.

I will also vouch for the GGXX pad thing, though that seems to be mostly just the scrubs. You DO have Juicy George however - dude's an arcade OG and STILL plays pad! He and Final Showdown are about the only actual good ones I've seen who use it. Well, Kenji/KBnova, but he's retired now.
Tekken scene has more pad warriors than GG, easily. Slips, Spero Gin, Brian H, and some others just on EC alone; hell, back in the TTT days, Honkey#1 could Korean lightdash on a pad! Same thing with Soul Calibur, too, but that's always been a console-focused series.
From all my travels, I really don't see any stereotypes with 3s. This makes sense seeing as it's the most popular game. Marvel & Tekken definitely have the highest black representation from what I've seen. Nerdy Asians EVERYWHERE obviously, with some wannabe thug ones mixed in. GG scene seems to get less anime ***gy as you move up in skill level - see Nevada, Chicago, Cali OGs, etc.
Melty Blood is otaku shit no matter where you are, though. I think they even asked Ruu or Mint at Evo last year and he said pretty much this exact same thing. =P

That is so true!! At least in my case. The only guys i know who are seriously into Guilty gear, are the extremely dorky, anti-social types.
This one group in particular i know of around my campus, they like to hold their own silly GG tournaments from time to time(mainly their own close-nit group) those guys literally broke me of Guilty gear.
The group was composed of such nerdy, up-tight asshats, that i can't bear to even look at GG anymore because it just makes me think of those jerks. They're pad warriors too, and couldn't play on a stick to save their pathetic lives.

I agree, since the group of GG players i mentioned earlier were also big into Melty Blood at one time too.
Melty blood does SUCK, i played it but only because a friend of mine wanted me too. Otherwise i'd rather play a real fighter with characters that don't suck(Only MB char i ever gave a damn about was nero).
Edit: The character selection sucked too. Nothing but one anime schoolgirl cliche after another. Once again only Nero stood out in what was otherwise a retarded cast.

Well, MB you can tell it's pretty obvious by its character lineup that it's H-bait which is kinda why a lot of people see its cast as unoriginal or mediocre at best. :\ The way the characters play is really not that diverse. For the most part like 90% of the characters can follow the same basic formula of poke-hitconfirm into launcher-air combo-air throw. Blockstrings follow a similar formula but substituting whiff cancels here and there. The playstyles really aren't all that fleshed out. But that doesn't mean I don't know how to have fun with the game, because I do. But I'm willing to point out its shortcomings as well as its strengths.

Blockstrings follow a similar formula but substituting whiff cancels here and there. The playstyles really aren't all that fleshed out. But that doesn't mean I don't know how to have fun with the game, because I do. But I'm willing to point out its shortcomings as well as its strengths.
Yeah like i said, i didn't care much for the fighting system. Someone here(don't remember who) once had an avatar that stated: "MB is GG for retarded otakus".
I suppose i'd have to agree with that statement.

God H-F, I know the game has its shortcomings, but the last thing I need is to sit here and actually argue about it with you. I wasn't arguing over it's faults, I was arguing how he decided to address them, ie 'mb not being a real fighter' and what have you.
I mean the faults your talking about are applicable to every fighting game ever with a twist here or there. I also disagree on the playstyles not being fleshed out, I mean what revision are we on now? Don't give me that.

That's fine man, my bad for getting my panties all twisted up over it.
I forgot to just let people be with their hate on the game, regardless of how bad it may be.
I'll just be on my way now ;p!

I'm not here to argue with you man. :\ And I was merely stating what I thought about it. And even if the faults I was referring to are present in every other fighting game, they're pretty subtle or not as glaring. And I honestly don't think the playstyles feel as fleshed out compared to a lot of the other games I've played. That's what I meant. And I'm not hating on the game either. I play it after all. :|

Super Smash Bros Melee-
New age hippies. Gay, peace loving hippies. Gay hippies that need to buy a new purse or more styluses for their pink Nintendo DS so they jack up the prices of their tournaments to unbelievable costs.
3S-
Its probably only around here. But a lot of the people playing the 3S machine have been very professional looking, wearing nice business suits and shit. WTF. Third Strike = Business Suits.

Anyone else notice any other stereotypes like this?
ps - SNK players:
Cross hand.
You're definatly right about that Marvel stereotype. Nothing but du-rags and baggy pants at Marvel, specificaly, MVC2.
I remember when i hustled this kid 20 bucks from that game. I challenged him. pride got the best of him, so he accepted.
he was good, too.
but i cheated on his ass. my man grabbed him and lifted him up off his feet, allowing me to waste him with some cheap ass throw.
he knew we cheated, though. he was like "no, i dont wanna pay you cheatin ass niggas".
so we threatened him. he payed me REAL quick then.

XvSF: pretty casual, laid back nice guys who occasionally wear sandals. Aren't as mysterious as the MSHvSF players: lurking in the shadows, thinking they're badass because their game has a Japanese tourist in it but are probably much more nerdy than the MvC players- they themselves being just as cool as the MvC2 players...only with 1/2 the shit talking and 1/8 the gangstadom.

"This forum requires that you wait 150 seconds between posts. Please try again in 56 seconds." Jesus, am I an eager beaver :-\
But I'd have to agree with the "GG anime" thing. The reason why most play it is because they geek out on how the graphics are anime-esque.
