If they start doing this like they were in the old days, then the Sci Fi channel just got better.

Tokko was good. I thought it was funny and the zombie things were cool. Macross Pluss is great.

I only caught part of the 1st anime but it didn't seem that great.

No matter how good the anime is on sci-fi, it'll never be as good as their previous saturday anime program. Anime back then was relatively exclusive and inaccessible. IMO that made saturday anime program all the more gratifying to watch. I think I said this before . It's like being rewarded something edgy and outside of the mainstream every week. The moderate exposure of anime + the good choice in anime made that program awesome. Now that anime has boomed and can be found anywhere, the appeal of it's exclusivity has been detracted. I find the paradox troubling. I really want to see more anime but the more popular it gets, the less rewarding it feels vewing them. Sorta like the law of diminishing marginal utility.

That being said, I can't believe i missed it! What time and day(s) does the program air?

Yep, they should the Fatal Fury: Motion Picture.

All this talk has got me interested in tracking down Iria: Zeram the Animation. That was one of my favorites from the Saturday anime block. First time I ever saw a chain/whip/sword and still one of the coolest.

Man....Sci Fi anime brings me back. I remember my first anime ever was Akira - back in the days when it was "Japanime". That and Vampire Hunter D. It's strange, no anime ever since has been quite as gratifying or memorable to me since watching it back in the day. It could be something of what kz said - that as it becomes more mainstream, common, and popular, it loses some of it's appeal.

But I always have to thank scifi for getting me into anime in the first place.

FUCK I owe you. The entire time I was watching Macross I was trying to remember what the name of that shit was.

Personally I never felt cool or edgy for watching anime, was just neat when I was in 6th grade and so used to shitty cartoons to see stuff about robo mechs and shit. That and everything felt cooler when I was in 6th grade.

The Anime Network needs to get picked up as a regular network and not just an on demand thing.

so far it starts on mondays at 11 and if people are syaing macross plus is an ova i guess tokko and oein will be on for the whole summer and the third anime will be a rotating ova series?

DS
06-19-2007, 08:34 AM
Yeah, Macross Plus was a 4 episode OVA. What they should do is show the original Macross. Hell, SciFi would be better off showing the original Mobile Suit Gundam. Granted, I've watched the all the OG Gundam stuff, but it would definitely be something different and actually viewable.

Old SciFi showed Galaxy Express 999. That movie is still too good. It's better than most of the shit that is show on CN.

Ah thanks for the heads up. I hope they have some sorta encore presentation thing. I really hate to miss the first ep. of an anime. As for Mobile Suit Gundam, I think CN aired that on toonami awhile back.

And Since we seem to be reminiscing about the goodness sci-fi brought back in the day, a shout-out to Beautiful Dreamer, Green Legend Ran, and Project A-ko. Though the dated animation aren't as good as todays digital anime, just the old-school feel of it is irreplaceable. Makes me wish some companies would just revert back traditional cel animation and coloring.

Yeah, aired on TV with shitty ratings. Thanks CN, for ruining great potential. They even aired Char's Counterattack. Now THAT was a shocker. Even though a ton of the casual viewers had no idea what was going on.

Makes me wish some companies would just revert back traditional cel animation and coloring.

Yeah, seriously. Too bad good writing has taken a backseat to animation in today's day and age of anime. Hence, why I don't pay much attention to anime. You'll get like, 2 shows that actually stick out in a year. Sorta like Gundam SEED. People are like, "Why didn't you finish it?" Well, the first 20+ episodes are pretty shitty. They say it got good after episode 25. Yeah, no. I gave this show 20 episodes to entertain me, I don't think I want to finish it now.

And people had the nerve to complain that OG Gundam had a lot of pointless shit, but it had good shit from the get-go. The bullshit didn't really come in until mid-series.

The problem with most of the channels not getting good stuff is because ADV and Funimation have their own channels. Well, I know Funi actually wants to start it's own channel for anime. So, just imagine all of the quality shows that the people are going to miss out. I guess SciFi is going to be getting most of it's shows from Geneon, Bandai, and all the other small companies out there.

I'm surprised Crusher Joe wasn't hit up for SciFi. The movie and OVAs are some of the best in anime.

i wish the scifi channel would be more lax with the censoring.

i'm tired of seeing cigarettes turned into lollipops and beer turned into frothy blue water.

people need to realize that just because it's animated DOES NOT mean that it's for young children.

imo.

The censors aren't as harsh as they were back then in the early days of Toonami. There's censoring, but just a slight touch. Nothing too big.

none of these animes are on sci-fi channel..you said sci-fi channel, not cartoon network.

and the only anime that has really replaced the cig with a lolipop is one piece.

oh ok...ya they defintly are. dude in the first 5 min of tokko the dudes sister was trying to make him have a hard on to make him happy lol. defintly more lax. Also their not replacing swear words but bleeping them out.

plus their commercial breaks they do sum raunchy jokes. I think the fact its on at 11 is a sign their gonna be more lax on censorship.

how sad is this? Sci-fi, with three damn shows, has crushed damn near everything on adult swim IN ONE NIGHT!!!! maybe the adults need a new pool to swim in? it just shows that the shit they're playing on CN is, and I think I can speak for ALL of SRK when I say this..........................."OLD!"

haha cn just picks what every has been talking about in the online circles and know whats gonna make the most money for them. They need their new dbz and bleach is was popular in america before it premiered and was the obvious choice...adult swim chooses animes that are generally safe for all ages. sci-fi channel is picking choices that are more adult. I know the irony since its adult swim. its about what demographic are you gunning for. kids have never been in sci-fi channels demographic scheme of things.

what the hell are you talking about? DBZ, ok, it was censored heavily by anyone who got a hold of it, but naruto and bleach are largely (practically entirely) intact. bleach airs at midnight at the earliest, so there hasn't been a SINGLE edit as far as I can tell. naruto has only edited extreme amounts of blood or violence (sexy no jutsu nosebleed, naruto stabbing a kunai into his hand). all the smoking, drinking, and boobs are still 100% in naruto. I haven't caught the early-evening naruto airings, but the saturday showings are all good.

the edits you're talking about seem to target one piece and yeah, it got nerfed by 4kids, but this summer funimation takes control of the license, so hopefully things will change.

as far as DBZ, naruto, one piece, bleach... these are shonen jump titles... they ARE meant for young children.

Because in America cartoons are intrinsically fused kid themes, according to the baby boomers and their offspring who grew up with Bug Bunny in women's clothes and random gunplay.

i still have VHS tapes of saturday morning sci-fi anime... i used to wake up and get so excited to tape whatever was gonna be on. once i caught vampire hunter d one morning my face was pretty much like :wow: it was like a fucking epiphany.

i was damn sure to be there to tape whatever was gonna be on from them on. project a-ko, akira, roujin z, 8 man after, fatal fury the mp and robot carnival are still sitting in my old VHS tape pile. it wasn't until later i figured out what anime actually was, rather than just crazy movies on the sci-fi channel
