View Full Version : Manhunt 2 banned in UK

The BBFC has today announced that Manhunt 2 for Wii and PlayStation 2 has been rejected, meaning the game cannot be legally supplied anywhere within the UK.
"Manhunt 2 is distinguishable from recent high-end video games by its unremitting bleakness and callousness of tone in an overall game context which constantly encourages visceral killing with exceptionally little alleviation or distancing. There is sustained and cumulative casual sadism in the way in which these killings are committed, and encouraged, in the game."
"Although the difference should not be exaggerated, the fact of the game's unrelenting focus on stalking and brutal slaying and the sheer lack of alternative pleasures on offer to the gamer, together with the different overall narrative context, contribute towards differentiating this submission from the original Manhunt game. That work was classified '18' in 2003, before the BBFC's recent games research had been undertaken, but was already at the very top end of what the Board judged to be acceptable at that category."
Sorry I don't have a source to link to, but if you google it or something I'm sure there will be plenty more.
Personally I couldn't care less as I'll just import it, no biggie...

Well, the game is rated Adults Only, so most major retailers won't even carry it. I remember when the Hot Coffee GTA material got revealed and it was pulled from Best Buy, Circuit City, Toys'R'Us, Wal-Mart, etc.
So yeah, I can definitely see the first AO rated console game in history to be banned from most of the world. The fact that Nintendo still supports it is a little fishy though, I'm thinking they'll edit theirs.
Rockstar will have to change at least the Wii version's content for an M-Rating. Nintendo doesn't license games that are AO.
I think Rockstar is being controversial for the sake of it.

games rated adults only? guess they're no adults in the UK.... I was looking forward to meeting some fly UK hunnies on my euro trip this summer. But I'm no "loli", so I guess, no fun in the UK for me...

Well I'm definitely pickin the shit up as soon as possible for the PS2 because I was a huge fan of the original, and visceral, brutal killings with things like a plastic bag, pieces of glass, and a hammer appeals to me. Call me a sick fuck, but it's such a sweet sweet release.
Shame on the PC police once again, for supressing expression.

From IGN:
"Consider for one moment that in Manhunt 2 you can, Wii remote and nunchuk in hands, use a pair of pliers to clamp onto an enemy's testicles and literally tear them from his body in a bloody display; and if that weren't enough, you'll take one of the poor victim's vertebrae along with his manhood. Or, if you'd prefer, you can use a saw blade and cut upward into a foe's groin and buttocks, motioning forward and backward with the Wii remote as you go."
Yeah, this had banned written all over it.

The voice acting in the first is some of the best I've ever heard. I'll probably give this a rent to see how it is but I don't know if I'll be buying it.

This is a perfect reason as to why the U.S.A. Owns the UK Horde. Unlike that police state of a country, we have a 1st amendment which bars this kind of retarted behavior.
SO how exactly is this game going to be more vilont then Manhunt 1?? and lol @ not a single one of them even playing the game.

I guess I'll be one of the first to say that I don't really care. My opinion of Rockstar has jettisoned so low that I don't think they could make up for it by buying me a pony.

Its just a game people. This is the same reception soldier of fortune recieved when it was released. I just think its funny how games get all the attention when there are tv shows and movies that pull this stuff all the time.

Well, I can see how the Wii version might arouse suspicion. I mean honestly, I want to make a sawing motion and tear through a man's scrotum. But, think of how a parent will react if they walk into a room and see their 12 year old kid doing that. I know I'm gonna catch a bunch of "Parents need to pay more attention to their kids activities" comments, but you can't tell me that American kids won't find a way to get this game. Remember how hard you tried to get Mortal Kombat because it had blood in it? Well, kids today still have that same hunger. The only difference is that in the Wii version that shit is completely interactive. If I were a parent, the thought of my kid taking a video game controller, and using my hands to emulate suffocating someone with a plastic bag, and then seeing it on the screen happen in front of me is fucking insane. Then again, I'm 21 without kids, so I'm copping this shit, day one.
Looks like Manhunt 2 won't get released at all with the AO rating unless it's for PC. Sony says it's not allowing AO games on any of their consoles or handhelds.
I knew Nintendo wouldn't license it, but Sony denying the game on their consoles surprises me.

What's wrong with allowing AO rated games? How does that hurt Sony or Nintendo. The game should just be a behind the counter affair. I personally want to see just how bad this game is going to be but from that preview on IGN that's damned fucked up. I'd actually be mad to be working on that game.

As much as Rockstar talks shit, you can bet yer ass that one of two thing is going to happen with this game. They'll fall back in line and tone it down so N and Sony'll take the game, or it'll be canceled entirely. Manhunt's fanbase (not that big but still) is NOT on PC. Thus, a PC only release would essentailly be wasting money.
That being said, I go for the first option where they concede. I'd be really surprised if they didn't do this, actually.
I hope that if they do tone it down to appease the ESRB, they'll release an AO version for PC just so we can compare the 2 and see what was cut out.
Can they legally just sell the AO game on their own website if retailers don't want to carry it?
InfiniDragon615
06-20-2007, 10:17 PM
Yup, internet sales are likely the way they'll go about releasing the non-edited product. Only they'll probably release the said AO version later down the road as a "Director's Cut" or something to get more sales.
But yeah, I admire their tenacity, but I don't think they want to fuck with the big chains or N and Sony on this one. Not having places like Wal-Mart and Game Crazy sell your stuff is essentially a death sentence.

it better not be just a bit over the AO line. if a game is gonna go AO, go big and i want to see some truly AO stuff.

Technically yes. The ESRB rating is just a suggestion. But then you've got a few issues (at least for the Wii version)...
- Neither Sony or Nintendo are willing to license it, which means you have no one to produce your discs. Which means they won't work in the system.
- Wii has Parental Controls, and it doesn't even offer the ability to block AO if I recall correctly, as no AO game is ever going to show up (not that this probably couldn't be changed through firmware). I have this idea that every game is required to have a parental control rating implemented.
So basically... for PC yes, for other systems no (and even MS has said they won't do AO games either)
On top of all this, all the comments I keep reading about this (not here, other places) blame Nintendo and Sony and seem to forget that like 99% of stores won't even carry the game. It's exactly like Infinidragon and other places have said it is, a death sentence.

This is fucking absurd. I just played through the trailers and videos on the official site, as well as a few gameplay videos of the original Manhunt (never heard of either game before today), and while the games are violent, it's not even close to what one can see in a movie or video.
At any rate, it's just someone going around killing people, like over 85% of games ever made. This just happens to contain a bit more blood, violence, and the occasional cursing. Not a big deal at all.

This just in, Rockstar reworked Manhunt to the point were ESRB granted it an M rating. It's now on schedule to arrive on October 31 in bastardized form. All I have to say is it had better AT LEAST be as disturbing and sadistic as the first one because that's what I love about the series, and is why I've been waiting for the sequel FOREVER.

Haha! I actually LoL'ed, once again, at one of your posts, Phoenix. If you're serious
Then again, you could be more clever than all of that and are just fishing for a reaction. I can't tell since this is the internet and there are no facial twitches or voicetones.
I have to believe you're joking. There's no way you can still believe the U.S. Constitution still has substance...
Nice job on trying to call someone else "retarted." The correct spelling is retard(ed)* [ or "Phoenix Wright"], by the way.

Well I've been playing the "Banned" version, and I've got to say, it's a shit game. It's all simply about the gorefest with no solid game behind it, the adult themes are goofy as hell and don't even get me started on the fucking control/camera problems.
If you just want big death scenes for the hell of it I guess you can have fun but I've just finished the fourth level and I won't be playing anymore.

No red blur no, it must have been their way, the death scenes aren't really THAT bad though, with the shitty graphics you can barely see anything anyway, about the worst I could think of is ripping a guys windpipe out with pliers, but even then the place on the next just turns red a blood spurts out.
