Im seeing more and more people come in and not have the ports open, and try to open them on the spot.
Post your configuration here, and we will assist you to get the ports opened.
Closing a firewall, will only close the ports, not turn it off.

wizard, i highly recommend submitting ggpo forwarding tutorial to www.portforward.net. that site is priceless for people that are rookies to this. either that or they can use PFConfig. which might work well too. its like a frontend for every router out there and makes it much easier apparently. i havent tried it yet tho.
edit: actually ill submit one

well until a guide comes out specifically for ggpo, just go to www.portforward.com. go to the port forwarding section, find your router model. and i would just select a random program from the list and use the instructions, except, instead of forwarding the ports they ask, you forward the ports that is shown on ggpo.net

Damn it. My router model would not be on there....
i have a 2wire 2701HG-B. i tried forwarding my port, but the lag is still there. also, i keep getting the black screen from time to time.

forwarding ports does not get rid of lag. it makes the program work
so then i'm pretty much screwed with lag :(
it's so horrible to play with.

I have a d-link di-524 wireless router(though the pc I use is connected directly via wire) and I have tried to open up ports on this thing multiple times now.
I've tried so I can have clear connections with bittorrent, Host a listen server in counter strike and freespace 2. Tried so I could host in monster, Guilty gear online and now with ggpo.
I've tried multiple tutorials including the one on portforward.com multiple times. I've had others help me and followed their instructions completly and still have it not work including taking screenshots of my settings and them saying i've done everything just fine and being baffled that it doesn't work.
One more thing as I am wondering if it is more than a coincidence.
I use to be able to open up ports just fine as I use to play freespace 2 online and had no issues hosting and my bittorrent would be all clear.
I didn't start having issues till about 2 years ago when my internet company merged with AT&T.
Though I have never heard of an isp being able to stop you from accessing certian ports and nobody else i've told that too has said it was possible. But im putting that out there just in case.
At the moment, it has got to the point where I have stopped trying to open ports and I no longer bother with anything that makes me have to.
Anybody have any clue to what my problem is?
Have you opened ports on your software firewalls as well?

Have you opened ports on your software firewalls as well?
The only other firewall I have on is the windows xp one no other software firewalls and yes.
I'm just trying to get some more info on your situation.
You opened ports 6000-6012 udp and 6004, 7000 tcp on both the router and windows xp firewall?
Edit: I made a quick guide for ShinGief, but it may be relevant here. It's how to open ports on the Windows XP firewall. Oh yeah, this isn't direct at you Rhythm, I just thought it may be relevant for this thread.
If anyone finds inconsistencies or discrepancies with this please pm or let me know on AIM (German Whoosh) and I'll fix it promptly. I don't wanna hand out shoddy advice.

Sounds good. I dunno about ports 6011, 6012 udp or 6004 tcp. The GGPO site says 6000-6010 udp and 7000 tcp. But for some reason I remember reading about the other three in threads somewhere...
Regardless I opened the other 3 and it works for me, you can try it with just the originals if you don't wanna open the other ones, you can always open them later.
Extra info never hurt anyone right?!?

This might be considered a double-post but I really want to get this working, you know?
I've got Windows FireWall, Norton FireWall, and LinkSys Router and all have been configured for GGPO, I have all the software and a working SFA2 rom and yet I get nothing but black screens of death. I honestly don't know what I'm doing wrong.
I get DCed after about 2 and a half minutes of nonactivity, I'm beginning to wonder if my connection itself is just eff'd.

Got this shit to work today finally. Got AiRiC to help me out. I went to my network configuration and I didn't even really mess with the port forwarding thing. I just went to the dmz and enabled something in there and it worked. Had to type in my IP address and then I was playing some gg's from then on. Some people were laggy but playing against caliagent (who lives near me) was good. Funny cuz I also played against AiRiC who's in Hawaii and the connection was even better. Good stuff could definitely come from this.
Using DMZ is like opening ALL your ports, leaving you without protection. If you weren't aware.

If are still having problems after opening the ports through your firewall and your router, make sure that you're assigning your computer a manual/static IP address. I was having problems (even though I got the correct ip through DHCP/automatic settings), but after I manually typed in my IP and set it as a static address it started working great. ;P

If your user name has spaces in it make a new user name without spaces. Take this to the bug thread btw.
Anywway, I'm looking at the Port Fowardi ng part of the page and I am uncertain where to put the information I need.
I assume for the Name field I'll put GPPO.net but as for application name not sure what I put. Port Start will be 6000, Port End will be 6010. Traffic type I assume is UDP? So what do i do with the IP address?
http://img517.imageshack.us/img517/913/testinipgp0.png
That's what I have managed so far. And the checkboxes are checked lol.
EDIT:::
Alright so I got it fixed. What I changed was that I checked the checkboxes (duh lol) and in the application name field I put in ggpoClient.exe. Before I was just putting in GGPO.net and it wasn't working. So for those of you still having trouble that should help a bit.

AmbiguousCrosup: You see for the program name you're putting GGPO? What I did to fix my problem was that I right clicked the .exe of GGPO, looked at the target location under properties, checked out the last part of the target directory, and copied that into the application/program name field. So for me it was: ggpoClient.exe
It should be the same for you. If that doesn't somewhat fix it then I got nothing. :(

I'm having some trouble with this....
I tried the program without doing anything and I'm behind a linksys. I get connected fine, but when attempting to start the game I get the black screen that sits, and then the "your opponents connection has disconnected. exiting" error pops up. So I opened ports 6000-6010 UDP and 7000 TCP - and I tried enabling DMZ one time as well. After this, at the black screen, the game will start to load to the point where the title appears after all the packed files are read, and then I get the same error.
I'm stuck. Any help is appreciated.

ok, how do we know if we have a port/router problem? I'm just assuming that's what my problem is, heh.
Right now after I hit login I'm treated to nothing followed by an eventual "Connection to the GGPO Server has been lost. Exiting Application." I've a added the ports on the windows firewall (even though I disabled it) and I did all the port forwarding stuff on my router. Still assuming I'm doing something wrong, though.
EDIT: And now it seems to be working fine (a few hours later). ok, heh

EDIT: guess I should go into why I can't get in if it isn't IP problem. I configured the ports both under network connections and my firewall software (using comodo firewall pro). I even added the other ports mentioned on the first page. I still get "opponent has disconnected" or something similar after trying to synchronize with opponent. I haven't done anything to my router simply because I don't know how. I have a netgear FA311 if that makes any kind of difference.
mastermind

A quick google search on Netgear FA311 tells me that the FA311 is actually your ethernet card and not your router.
If you have access to your router's IP address (usually default, it's 192.168.1.1 or 0.1) and know how to log in, you can forward your ports from the Port Forwarding option there. You can access it through a web browser window. To figure it out in Windows, go Start > Run and type in cmd. From there, a DOS-like window pops up. Type in ipconfig and hit enter. It should bring up your IP address and Default Gateway. If you share your internet connection, then the Default Gateway address is usually your router.
Just open Intarweb Exploder or Firefox and type in http://(your router's IP address) ... if you know your administrative login for the router, then you should be able to forward the correct ports.
derr, I'm dumb - yeah that was my net card.
my router is a d-link DI604.

what if i can't access the router? is there another way to forward the required ports?
Ambiguous, the screen shot from your router, is that the "virtual server" Screen? because you should be editing your FIREWALL config on the router, not the virtual server

Just finally got this to work.
I finally got around to just dmz'd my router and finally everything worked perfectly.
I see there is somebody else with a d-link di-524 who despite opening up his ports just fine it still didn't work.
Something is wrong with that particular router that it just refuses to realize ports are opened on it.

Hey guys, when configuring your routers, you most likely don't have to worry about outgoing traffic. NAT port forwarding only applies to incoming traffic, which you'll need to direct to your PC. Just forward ports 6000-6010 UDP to your PC and you don't have to worry about the 7000 TCP part. Any software firewalls that block outgoing ports will still need to be configured in full, but most routers only need to worry about the incoming traffic.

To anyone having problems forwarding ports with their particular router, visit the following site to find tutorials catered to your router model:

It would also be helpful if perhaps Ponder could add the above URL to the FAQ.

I haven't really been on GGPO since build 16/17. Back then there were times I could play people and times when I'd just get that black screen for the whole time I was logged on.
Since then I've moved to a dorm that provides free road runner and such.
So I downloaded build 20 today and I'm not sure if it's a real problem on my end or if it's just a matter of being patient. Here's the situation:
I can watch other people's matches fine but I can't seem to play anyone when I try to connect. About 20-40 seconds after it says "Starting client synchronization" The other player will quit/disconnect. I figure this means it's taking a lot longer than it's supposed to since I've watched some of them play other people. I checked the firewall and all the ports are still open from before.
Is there anything else I need to do? Any new tricks people use to increase the chances aof playing a match (like the "double challenge" from before)?
...God I wanna play Marvel with someone.

Is it possible you can disable the software-based firewalls (Windows and McAfee) so we can just focus on the router? Secondly, can you tell me what revision your router is using as seen here (http://www.dlink.com/products/support.asp?pid=316&sec=0#quickInstallGuides)?

10-26-2007, 02:27 PM
best solution imo:
1. set up dmz/ip passthrough from your router to your computer
2. disable everything except your windows firewall (windows firewall is exactly as much protection as you'll need unless you're insane and love downloading random programs and running them, but even then a normal antivirus with a resident shield will be enough)
3. allow ggpo to get inbound connections when windows firewall bitches
4. profit

same for me I need help!!!!!!!!!! ahhh
Ok, the first rule in troubleshooting anything is to eliminate the most obvious causes first:
1) Make sure you have the correct ROM version. Remember, there are a few different versions of both Street Fighter Alpha 2 and Marvel vs Capcom 1. If you've never gotten GGPO to work, this is most likely the cause. If you use the wrong rom, you will always get a black screen.
2) Once you have verified that you have the correct rom and revision, the next thing you want to do is to disable all software-based firewalls (e.g. Norton, Mcafee, Zonealarm, Kaspersky, etc). I noticed a few users here who use two or more firewalls at once, this does not increase the security of your PC. In fact, almost every major firewall vendor discourages users from doing this since this will cause the Operating System to behave strangely and will crash without warning.
3) If you use a router, and have set up port-forwarding, you MUST use your private IP address, not your public one. I have written a short essay on this subject here (http://ggpo.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=52).
4) If you need help setting up port forwarding, I do NOT recommend opening all ports, as that would be like having your front door jammed shut, so you open every door and window in the house, leaving your house vulnerable to intruders.
5) Every router is a bit different in setting up port-forwarding (although the premise is the same), but Google is your friend! Do not hesitate to use Google by typing something like "D-Link 524 port forwarding". You will most likely find a site and/or forum that has an easy-to-understand tutorials. Alternatively, visit the manufacturer's website and see if they provide instructions. Some of them even provide the user manual to the router as a download.
6) Some have complained about lag with GGPO. Keep in mind that wireless connectivity by its very nature have latency issues. Again, each individual's experience will vary greatly depending on several factors. If you are experiencing serious latency issues, then consider using a ethernet switch/router that is not wireless.
7) My small opinion is that if you use software-based firewalls, I recommend Zonealarm for its effectiveness, it's cost ($0 for the Zonealarm free) and poses no problem for GGPO users that I can see. I can't speak for the others.

I absolutely know that I have the correct ROM version because I am able to watch peoples matches. I have turned off Windows firewall on my computer, and forwarded 6000-6010 UDP, and 7000-7001 TCP, and I STILL cannot connect. I have ICMP commands blocked on my routers firewall, but I turned THAT OFF too. I have a 128-bit WEP key but I am not sure if that matters. I tried the virtual DMZ for my specific IP to no avail. What else could I possibly do?

My problem is this. Im using a wireless router. I can get on the server sometimes I get a msg saying if you want to continue GGPO might not work properly. I also downloaded the port set program PFConfig. Now I did set the port numbers to 7000 and 6000-6010 in the correct places. When I did that the msg that kept poping up went away. However I can only watch matches but not play them? When someone has challenged me it goes to load the game but sticks on Connecting to opponent. It never gets to the game. And I can also chat with the person. So I dont know whats going on. My last problem is I have the correct file for KoF98 (kof98.zip) and its in the roms folder as GGPO ask for. However when I want to switch to that room it tells me that I have to have it in the roms folder, But it is. If anyone does understand whats going on with my 2 problems thanks in advance for the help.

Hey guys,
I have followed the million odd tutorials out there and am havin no luck.
I have my modem plugged into my router via cable, which then shares the net to the other computers on my network. I haven't been able to play for over a month just out of the blue. Before, I was able to play most people that I challenged or that challenged me but for some odd reason, I'm stuck with the black screen of death.
I've read this whole thread and have done everything I could to no avail.

I can't seem to connect with anyone on not only NFBA kaillera p2p, but apparently ggpo as well. I've forwarded my ports, turned my firewall off, turned off my AVG anti-virus program, and still nothing works.
On NFBA, I can't host, but I can connect to a friend of mine who I usually play and he's in Europe.
On ggpo, when I connect to someone, it just gets stuck and doesn't go anywhere. Or when I try to spectate, it worked for this one match, but then for another the screen was completely black.
Am I missing something here?

what brand modem and router. you cant host on nfba if the port you are hosting on is closed. this could be in your modem if it has a firewall your router has the wrong ports forwarded or you have another firewall on your computer.
try turning off the windows firewall if it isnt off.
on your regular firewall make setting for your ports.
check your modem and firewall to make sure you have it set up correctly.
make sure you have a static ip address.

I've got a Linksys wireless WRT54G.
Let's see, I've forwarded the ports. turned off windows firewall, and turned off my anti-virus program.
So there's a firewall in my router? And there's a seperate firewall on my comp besides Windows firewall? Little confused.

Allright, so I ended up making a static ip, setting it up in the settings, enabling it in the router settings, and then I turned off the firewall in my router settings.
I tried to host a game with a friend on kaillera, but he couldn't connect to me. Might be due to his school connection, cuz we've connected before when he's been at home.
Then I went onto ggpo, and I was able to connect to the first person that challenged me. So I think my prob might be fixed. I'll give it some time to see how it goes with others.
Thx for the help James, and I apologize for being a knucklehead before. Appreciate your help. :wgrin:

Ok so my DSL modem is routed through my Motorola VOIP, then to my Linksys router, and then to my comp running VISTA.
I DMZ'ed my IP on the VOIP, and forwarded 6000-6010 on the linksys. Nada. Then I DMZ'ed both... nothing. GGPO is set to allow on my Windows firewall.
I scanned 6000-6010 on my ports, some website said they were still closed. Fucking frustrating.

ive seen this problem with voip stuff before. try running modem->router->voip if you can.
and remember u MUST have a static ip or your port forwarded does NOTHING.

Iv gone through many routes seeking help for my port opening problem with no success but I will throw it out here and see if anyone has any suggestions.
First off,Im currently using a Belkin router, model F5D5231-4.I followed the directions at portforward.com to a T.I set up a static IP and opened the proper ports and I have no success.I know it is definetly a port problem because I am also trying to run an everquest server and am having the same problem.
Now,I have a linksys router, model # WRT54G,that I bought hoping my old router was just completely kapoot.I want to get the linksys running no matter what but here is the problem.
When trying to setup my linksys,it does not detect internet connection. Now,I say,ok,I will directly connect my computer to my modem to access router setup(192.168.1.1).Now here is the problem.ANYTHING CONNECTED DIRECTLY TO MY MODEM GETS ZERO INTERNET CONNECTIVITY.THE ONLY WAY I CAN GET A CONNECTION IS TO CONNECT MY OLD BELKIN ROUTER.Sorry for the caps but that is the root of my problem.I dont care how many times you tell me to retry connecting directly to my modem,it doesnt work.I know it makes zero sense, but the only way I can get an internet connection is if I run my comp through my old router.Everyone who has tried to help me with this insists I am connecting it wrong or I am doing something wrong.I assure you,a direct connection to my modem results in no internet connection, but running a connection to my old router, then PC results in it working.
I am far from a computer wiz,but also far from not having a basic knowledge of what I am doing.I have tried reseting both router and modem, powering down everything for over half an hour and connecting and repowering in the proper order>modem>router>comp.I am at my wits end with this problem and I am sure the route of the problem lies with whatever reason I am getting no internet with a direct modem connection.I am ready to call in a friend who does this sort of stuff for a living, but if anyone can help me,it would be tremendously appreciated. But I can assure you,Iv tried all the basic troubleshooting methods. Thanks for any input.

Not sure if this is a horrible suggestion or not.
Maybe if you're having trouble and don't know where the issue is you can try turning your Windows Firewall off completely and see if GGPO now works. If it works then you'll want to turn your firewall back on anyway, but at least you'd know that the problem is with the Windows Firewall, not the router settings. The reason it might be a horrible suggestion is turning off your firewall even for a few minutes might be a bad idea security-wise. I'm not really familiar with internet security issues so I wouldn't know.

Hello.
I use ggpo beta rc3 latest and the problem i'm facing is that while i play a few ok matches at the beggining with no problems after a while i can't play anymore. Made a few restarts and now i can't even play matches unfortunately, though i log in with no problem.i use the following:
--> Linksys Router wag354g v1 (port forward ok!)
--> Comodo firewall 3 (maybe the problem is here, but maybe!)
--> GGPO latest
Has anyone faced any similar situations with these configuration?
Any help with the comodo firewall?
I'm not intending to close/turn off my software firewall for security reasons!
Any help would be appreciated!thanx!

I don't know what happened to GGPO RC3 when it was down, but now I can't connect to anybody.
Router: Trendnet Wireless N Gigabit Router (port forwarded for her pleasure)
Modem: Motorola something or other- pretty sure this isn't the problem if I can connect anywhere else on the internet
Firewall: Windows (GGPO is allowed)
I've done everything but enable the DMZ (not something I'd really like to do)

start > run > type in "cmd" (no quotation marks)
ipconfig/all (this will show all your net stuffs)
look for "default gateway" and remember that number
ex: my default gateway is 192.168.11.1
now open your browser and enter in that number and you will then get a lil screen that asks for a username and password. wether you do this via CAT-5 cable or wireless shouldnt matter. i configure my router via wireless.
about the password. i have used 3 japanese routers in my life, and here are the default passwords that i remember:
user name:root
password:
*note that the pword is just blank
user name:admin
password:
*note that the pword is just blank
user name:admin
password:admin
other than that, good luck on finding the pword if you cant guess your self. also try the company's name, the room number ie tech302.

from what i have experiance and possibally the same for you, is when the game starts up and stops when it says [waiting for server] or stops when it says [connecting]. I THINK it is from the large amount of ping that both players [or one] have. but i dont know for sure. just a thought.

Re-Edit: This was my first time using GGPO.
I was challenged to 3S on GGPO. I accepted. It never gave me control; it apparently had the computer play for me. So, I wanted to know why.
I heard of this port forwarding madness, and looked at SaBrE's link on the first page. I did not know my router model, so I went downstairs to check. It's a Netgear, and said: "Model GS108". Hard to be more clear than that. That model isn't listed. So I'm lost. I have no idea how to proceed; If there's info on configuring the router I have, I'd love to know. Also, what exactly does port forwarding do?
Third Strike, I mean Edit: The Netgear site, with some info on the GS108: http://www.netgear.com/Products/Switches/DesktopSwitches/GS108.aspx?detail=Specifications
Edit: I knew I needed a ROM, so I got one. sfiii3.zip. Then it told me I also needed sfiii3n.zip. I got that too. It still says: "You need both of sfiii3.zip and sfiii3n.zip". Maybe one of my ROMs is incorrect? Also, what are the chances the ports are set correctly already? I'd like to believe it's an issue with the ROM/s.
Edit Fighter IV: Ports are forwarded.

Edit Fighter IV: Ports are forwarded.
first of all, you have a "switch" not a router. so the process is slightly different from the guide that you were reading.
forwarding in very dumb terms (no complexity involved) is where you tell your computer that "here are the door(s) that you will use these doors when you want to go outside (GGPO)". if pc dont know where to go in or out, pc keeps running into the wall (you not connecting)
i am reserching your switch now.... i will post when i can/cant find the solution
edit: i FULLY read your post now. you dont need my help in that.
BIG NOTE: NO TALKING ABOUT ROMS ON SRK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

static ip is such a big fix for so many connection issues i was having.
ya..... if you dont have a static ip, then the ip addr that you opened the ports to wont work if you ip were to change (like it does in dynamic ip) so the only way around that is if you check your ip from time to time (upon disconnect and reconnect) and then change your ip addr in your portforward settings.
all in all, use static ip, i never have any other problems with my net when i have static. note that i do alot of GGPO, azureus, etc. so static ip is a 100% must do for me :)

well, the first thing you should do is get the exact wording of your error message (not msg synchronizing plx) and go to google.com and put in, "ggpo [your error message]" and you can find the answer most likely.
about ports, it is tcp 6000-6100 and udp 7000. or atleast taht is what i have and i have no problems at all. utp/tcp 3866, am i missing something from your message or am i not doing something in this case?

wizard, i highly recommend submitting ggpo forwarding tutorial to www.portforward.net. that site is priceless for people that are rookies to this. either that or they can use PFConfig. which might work well too. its like a frontend for every router out there and makes it much easier apparently. i havent tried it yet tho.

Ok, I got the new version of ggpo last week and whenever I try to connect to someone or spectate a match, I get this:
"Assertion: false @ ..\source\network\tcp.cpp:210"
Someone told me it means that my TCP isn't forwarded right. I have 1 port (6000-6010) with UDP protocol. And then another (7000-7000) with TCP protocol. Is there something wrong with those? Do I need to forward another port? If so, what's the port? I can't figure this out. Any help would be appreciated. Thx.

I can't seem to get it to work. I am using a netgear MGR614 V6 router, but I already have the port forwarding setup. UDP 6000-6010 and tcp 7000-7000.
The exact error that I get is "Login failed."
I would assume that this might be a connect problem, but I can't think of anything else to do. I already made an account with no spaces too.

Ok, I have a Bell Modem, connected to a Linksys WT300N, running Vista Ultimate.
I'm not new to port forwarding, and forwarded all my ports right (I think). I unlocked 6000-6009 both, and 7000 both. I forwarded it to my dynamic IP. Couldn't connect.
Ok, so I tried sticking my wire directly into the modem. No router at all. Still coudln't connect.
Vista firewall is off, and there are no anti virus programs running.
Any ideas?
