I hope this time there's no problems with Saving unlock characters. I know they save on the XBox 360 version, but you have to do some complicated task to keep them saved.

And if there's no button configuration, at least the DS controls are better.

Ghaleon
06-28-2007, 08:00 AM
What a great fucking idea, the controls are already mapped for MK, and online... man. The Big DS D-pad kind of sucks, but I'm sure this will be really nice on Lite.

Can't wait to try this out. I just hope they don't mess up the game. If we get a version like MKT N64 or UMK3 SNES or something, it'll just be sad. Ed Boon says he had nothing to do with Mortal Kombat Advance. But I don't believe him. If this is some garbage port of the UMK3 engine, I don't think he'd even be able to tell the difference at this point.

At least it sounds like it's the same people doing this as the 360 version. Lack of button config, unlocked characters not saving, repeating the first level are all annoying. But at the same time, the XBLA version of UMK3 has fantastic netplay and it is a perfect port of the arcade. Those make it worth playing despite the other annoyingness.

I'm actually excited for this.. Maybe it's cause I've been playing PS2 MKT for the past week or so, I dunno.

But if netplay runs smoothly and the gameplay is as solid as the original, this'll be a huge leap as far as fighters on the DS goes.

IGN has an early trailer up:
http://ds.ign.com/objects/881/881594.html

But this is just footage of UMK3 for SNES overlayed on an image of the DS.

They also have stills that are pictures of UMK3 for the Arcade overlayed on DS images.

So obviously they don't have anything to show yet. I remember they did this before, showing MKT footage as part of an advertisement for MK3 when it was released on Midway Arcade Treasures.

EDIT: looks like there's footage of other version of UMK3 mixed in with the SNES version so I guess they just grabbed whatever footage they had and used it.

The other version shown with Reptile and Jax towards the end is from Genesis, so this is vintage Midway ambivalent trickery at its finest, but I'm confident with the release of XBLA UMK3 being fine, that there's no way they can botch this with that to work with or even refer to since the PS2 version would have been fine if it were powerful enough to do it. It just seems like what it comes down to is emulation of the game works as long as the system is powerful enough. I would definitely be willing to play people on it once I get the means, perhaps a custom DS built into an arcade stick!!!

You guys know where to go when you want to get good!

This game is WAY too fast to be playing on-line on the DS. Besides, I highly doubt you'd be able to find competition halfway decent when the DS demographic consists of more casual gamers than hardcore.

Yeah. They could tone Rain down and add him but I don't know if they know how to balance games any more. It doesn't look like it.

And Noob could be fun if it's the hacked UMK3 arcade Noob. Faster walking, good attacks, good combos, no specials. And it sounds like the Noob in UMK3 Wavenet was actually balanced.

They need to pull that UMK3 W out and start porting that to stuff.

Murt!

Isn't the AI of a hacked noob supposively mimics kano's combos? Or was it Reptile? I don't remember but it would appear that they just might settle with Mileena, Ermac, and Sub Zero Classic combination.

I actually see them including Human Smoke before Rain and Noob, though the hacked version wouldn't be a bad idea at all - just if you're going to add noob of any version, might as well add Rain. And since Rain's move list is broken to a fault, it's hard to take away from it without damaging the character.

Noob does mostly use Kano's combos. I think he has a couple of combos that Kano doesn't have.

Human Smoke would have to be in. They couldn't make a version of UMK3 without him, it would be travesty.

If Rain's roundhouse was a little slower, or was a command move, and it disabled, that would balance Rain a lot. That would keep him from being as broken since he wouldn't be able to do an easy inf off of just about any hit connecting.

It's cool that it's your favorite, but why do random people note UMK3 as being broken? It's one of the least broken 2D fighters there is and I have a lot of experience in 2D fighters. Almost half the cast is usable in high level play, there are obviously powerful characters here and there, but also there are only 3 universal infinites, and none of those characters are number 1, in fact the second most usable infinite belongs to Stryker and he is around 13 of 23 in terms of tier rank. Shang Tsung is almost at the bottom and he also has a universal inf. The difficulty to set it up for sure makes it almost pointless to try. Otherwise, I'm just curious, what warrants the term "brokenness"?

I've never been a really big fan of MK, but I find myself excited for this release. Online 2D fighters on my favorite handheld being released in the US? That's a good deal. I'm hoping that this convinces either Capcom or SNK to revisit some of their classic 2D games with online on the DS. SFA3 on the GBA was pretty decent - upgrade the graphics, add in WiFi and I'll throw my money their way.

I'm the same when it comes to MK, but even I may give this game a try. I hope this leads to more original fighting games like SNK vs. Capcom DS (Wonderswan-style) with Wi-Fi.

I've only spent a couple of hours on it, but online play is pretty fun so far.
I don't usually play MK games, so I suck pretty bad.
Online comp is surprising good when I signed on.
I got owned really bad by some cool combos into run throw set ups.

I hate that there's no training mode.

Yeah, any any time I have to move the d-pad right, down, right, I shake it too much to see what's going on. Left, down, left it doesn't happen cause my thumb can rock. So as Ermac I always stay on the left and KL I stay ont he right X-D

I think I've gotten about 80 matches in so far (my router hates my DS) and it is actually a lot better and more fun than I expected it to be despite already being a big UMK3 fan.

Thoughts about UMK3 on DS

For one thing it is the arcade ver. so no Noob or Rain which is a good thing. People who are new to UMK3 will get there ass kicked since the AI does random things like it knows when to block any special at any time. So doing normal moves into combos might help, also any time you jump back the AI will throw a projectile. So you can jump back and to a teleport move and the AI will fall for it every time. Motaro can be beaten by doing jump in combos over and over. Shao Khan can be beaten by ducking until he does his upwords charge attack and then uppercut him, then run next to him and wait till he starts to get up and uppercut him again, then keep doing that till he dies.

Some times he will block so you have to becareful. Playing WI-FI is fun there are noobs which can be fun to pick on but some times they will disconcet. Thats why I like playing good people cause they will stay most of the time and fight you. Puzzle combat is fun and you can play puzzle combat on wi-fi also. The only down side of UMK3 on DS is there is no training mode.

So over all I give UMK3 on DS a 8 out of 10

heres a vid showing how to beat Shao Khan

And from what I heard, unlocking the secret characters is a less pain in the ass in this version:

-The stylist can be use for UKKs, instead of buttons.
-They stay unlock.

So how's the emulation on it, way better than on XBox 360?

{PFH}-Lake
11-19-2007, 09:15 PM
To unlock characters just get a game over and dont continue, then put in the code to unlock millenia, classic sub-zero, or Ermak, even though Ermak is the only character worth unlocking.

if you go into options menu it will tell you how to unlock puzzle kombat characters, and you can change the controlls and you can pick if you want to play on the top or bottom screen

360 version's emulation was pretty solid. It had the annoying tendencies of not saving hiddens and of resetting the stage. Those things are fixed in this. But, there are other issues. There are a lot of little graphics bugs like pallets messing up, usually only during fatalities but sometimes things can happen like Smoke's smoke turning black. Stuff like that.

Also you can clearly see it's downsized. The DS screens are considerably lower resolution than the arcade was so the graphics suffer for that.

But, the important part is intact. The gameplay is good and quick and the netplay is pretty damn stable.

Here are lots of examples on beating the CPU for beginners against 3x edurance:

http://youtube.com/results?search_query=ewashock+cpu&search=Search

They are done in endurance matches to show various tactics of characters vs many different characters.

I would, however, advise just playing against other people. It's the only way to learn.

The emulation issues with XBL version are because it has to come back to the lobby everytime a match is over and it doesn't hold the gameplay at say, a mock continue screen. This makes the game reset everytime it goes to the select screen, thus resetting the stage. In the DS version, it just automatically takes you back to the select screen, cutting out the continue screen, and keeping the stage order intact. The method of saving the hiddens for the DS version seems to be the same as a standard emu but linked a profile, whereas on the XBL version it's linked to the profile as well, but if you use another profile to start the game it'll lose it for the one you got them on. I've had that happen to me when trying to switch controllers and it asks to login as a different name. All the settings get whiped.
