View Full Version : Geeks are being stereotyped in movies worse than Asians

I have watched 3 movies this year with a "Best hacker in the world that must be sook out to solve a problem no one else can solve" character, only upon arriving he lives in his moms house.
At least 10 movies in the past few years have had a Geek character with a large collection of action figures. That's nearly every geek character appearing in a movie.
These 2 stereotypes alone are almost inextricably tied to the character archetypes, and it's starting to piss me off. Jeez, this week alone-
Transformers- Super hacker lives in his moms house, fat guy eating donuts playing DDR
Live Free or Die Hard- 'Warlock's 'Command Center' in his moms basement, must be sook out for uber hacking purposes. Forgiveable, barely, because it's Kevin Smith.
2 movies with the freaking stereotype. Both of those characters have action figure collections, and both are manic about someone touching their shit. This is getting ridiculous. Not as a geek, as a movie fanatic, I can already see the stuff permeating the screens for at least a year. The thought pisses me off.

It's not that it's not true. It's that it's boring and annoying to watch.

i would just like to point the irony in you misusing the word "sook" while bitching, since that would make you a "sook (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/sook)".

worse than asians? pls asian males on TV:
1. they always do kung fu
2. they cant speak english
3. if they dont do kung fu, theyre huge feminine pussies that are soft spoken
4. they never get any play. at most they get a hug, and if theyre really famous, like jetli or jackiechan maybe even a kiss.
5. watch docilely as the actresses who play their sisters and daughters have wild hot animal sex with the white man
6. never get roles as lawyers or doctors on those lawyer shows or doctor shows even though in real life, how many asian lawyers and doctors are there? HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
so who gives a shit about how geeks are being stereotyped? 99% of those movies the geeks then bang the shit out of the asian woman midway through

True, but the 'uberhaxx0rinbasement' is always a fat white/black guy. I guess asians don't really show up for the most part in these kinds of roles, which I don't think is such a bad thing, at least they avoid one stereotype by not being fat.

Ever notice asians are starting to take over commercials? Seriously, what used to just be white people, now there will be a few asians thrown in the mix.
Someone must be realizing asians are slowly taking over. In toronto anyway.
Why do you care? You act like this is new. Hell, nerds should have cried a river when Revenge of the Nerds got a sequel.

I'm deeply offended by the manner in which women are portrayed in films.
In movies, they're smart, reasonable, good-natured, sentient human beings.
In reality, they're a piece of property designed for male recreation and cooking food. (Yes, I'm aware that most of them malfunction)

How do you expect Geeks to be sterotyped? If its too positive they wont be geeks.
I can think of of a few "Geek roles" where they were suave/cool/heroic thou....like that movie 'Stay Alive'...Hackers.....Antitrust....

You're trying to bait out a geek (i.e. me) to correct you and tell you that it was WoW and not Everquest, right?
People have come to expect the archetypes though. Someone should make a movie and cast people in roles that are the opposite of their racial/social archetypes - that would really mess with people's heads. :P

There is so much creative fertile ground to use from the internet/gamers and people just make action figures and moms basement jokes.

If there WAS a graphical interface i think i'd be more willing to learn that shit :shy:
Honestly though, stereotypes exist in movies for a reason, because they're fucking true for a lot of people, and it's something you can relate to.. everyone knows at least one nerd with a shitton of action figures, or one anime fan with a wallscroll... or a hacker who is overweight because he eats breathes and lives for his computers and shit.
All my nerdy friends have figurines and models and wallscrolls and all this other stuff, it's charming and cool to me, not a horrible misrepresentation of a classic nerd, geek or otaku.
I mean shit, I have some figurines too (Lulu/Kimahri from FFX, a couple of Shaman King figurines), but i'm not self-loathing over it..

Every once in awhile, a tv show/film shows something vaguely resembling what real hacking looks like. It's always much more enjoyable to see a huge block of code than the freaking drag/drop bullshit.

I agree with this, If you don't live at home with your parents, don't have a bunch of action figures around and other things mentioned.....maybe your just not a geek.
I don't disagree that its cliche and annoying in movies of course.

But do you know any real 'hackers?' That was my point, that none of us know any, so how could you really determine what the stereotype is of a computer hacker.

I know rom hackers, people who come up with AR/GS codes for games, a few dataminers, and a bunch of people who spend about 99% of their waking time finding any and all flaws in the code of a "Metaverse", known as Second Life. All are pretty remarkably nerdy people. I mean they're not so extravagant as to say, wear tinfoil hats and scream about the government and shit, but they're pretty kooky. You know when people are all book smarts and they're just stupid when it comes to handling people in person? Most of them are like that.
