Finding friends on 360 matches?

Noob question I guess...

My friend and I had a hell of a time trying to find each other using the optimatch with on friends list selected. Does this not work on the 360?

We had to finally create a match with that turned off and then keep trying to randomly connect till we found each other.

How about if One of you create a game, and then send an invite to the other one.
