== Kira's 720 Motion Dissected ==

Kinda wish I could edit this info straight into the Wiki :P, but anyway, I did some testing and found exactly how far you need to rotate the joystick in order to execute Kira's 720 super (seems like you're free to rotate farther if you'd like).

The distance depends on where you start and in which direction you rotate. I tested starting at 6, 3, and 4 only. Starting at 4 is the same as starting at 6, but starting at 3 (or presumably any corner) is different from starting at 4 or 6.

Without further ado, here are the necessary motions to execute a 720:

Starting at 6:
* 63214789 632147 A+B
* 69874123 698741 A+B
No matter which way you go, you need to do 1 and 5/8 rotations. This applies to starting at 4 as well.

Starting at 3:
* 32147896 32147 A+B
* 36987412 3698741 A+B
If you go down first (clockwise while facing right), you need to do only 1 and 1/2 rotations. But if you go up first (counter-clockwise), you need to do 1 and 3/4 rotations.

Take note of where the necessary motions end: these tell you how early you can press A+B. There are some simple patterns for how far you need to rotate the jostick that you can use to remember them.

Alternatively, you can just do 1 and 3/4 rotations every time, and it'll always be sufficient.

good gier writeup

orka, good writeup. however, i dunno if youve noticed by now, but...players who are good at games usually cant explain them well, and vice versa. not always, but a lot of the time they are bad at describing how the meat and potatoes of the game really work on a technical level. andy isnt a bad player but i think hes misinformed about this particular topic.

also, about your bhanri opinion..i dont know i could never make this arana work for me. like i can get the clash of course and the 623D followup free but its the dashing in that is the problem. Instead of clashing I'll get hit. I guess I'm too defensive. XD

Maybe I should just learn to be more patient. I'm really, really, really, REALLY aggressive with Kamui, hence the Niptra which makes a lot of unsafe shit worth the risk.
Aren't most Kamui players more defensive, like you and Diddy Wong?

Yeah most Kamui players are defensive (me and Justin, have a very similar mindset, considering we learned from the same person/played in the same arcade for years, so thats kind of a special case.) As for the Niptra example...thats just another example of you using your arcana for antiair options (though it is rather inconsistent, for obvious reasons...)...its not like Kamui has something like Heart 5b to constantly rely on so you gotta mix it up with your defensive options.

orka: im not sure if we are talking about the same thing. what im reffering to is for example:

if you try to hit somone trying to summon lightning (236d) the move will get stuffed (move not coming out period) vs gier were it can get stuffed but a very small window to stuff it. ill try to find a vid to show u what im talking about. but arturo got what i was saying. so its not really speed and start up. its more so that the other arcanas wont have the move come out but gier it still will

andy, from my understanding, if you hit gier and lightning a little bit "late" into the casting period, they will still come out even if you hit them, its not only gier. i see what youre talking about, but from my experience, its the same exact thing. might wanna test it to be sure though.

also, one thing about gier: at the highest levels of arcana, it becomes much harder to make it (gier) work since top players can fight it well. at low and intermediate levels, gier will smash faces in pretty free.

also bhanri clashes >>> gier fish in a lot of situations btw.

Snip.

Agreed on the "good players may not be able to explain well". I suck pretty hard at games, whenever I play other people it seems I have to work twice as hard as they do to succeed. I attribute this to the fact that I am white. However, I have silly amounts of frame data/other information on a high technical level memorized, and I have noticed that I'm a much better teacher than I am a player.

I believe the saying is "those who can, do, those who can't, teach".

As far as gier goes, at top levels it still works, but it has nowhere near the dominance it does in lower level play. Also, top arcana such as Gier can work well for so many characters, whereas other arcana have much more specific character specific needs (Death/Poison Maori, for example).

In all I feel that the arcana that best cover holes in defense (Niptra) or offense (Fire) dominate the game, and those that do both are tops (Bhanri, Gier). Other arcana ARE good (Nature's whack ass unblockables, Poison maori loops, stone giving yoriko free Pents on characters that can hit her before she completes it from her normal BNB, etc) but they're either extremely character specific or provide a benefit that can't compare to the power of the top four.

This is, of course, unless someone finds some silly broken shit or other glitches that push another arcana to the top. I don't see that happening because Japan isn't really playing AH1 anymore, but the game is still in it's infancy.

Theoryfighting aside, will anyone here be at C3 at the end of May? They're doing a rather large two-day tournament and we've got AH1 planned. Last time I got to play Skisonic and I was impressed by his Konoha, but I've really only played a few people and I'd like to get some matches in with others.

you can do stacking of gier even without button bind.

if you see gier appear on the screen, that means that you hit the opponent after the start-up frames (i.e. after the move has already activated). what you need to keep in mind is that gier doesn't immediately jump out on the screen after 236d/623d/236236d activates. the point of activation is when the gier's shadow turns into a 'puddle,' then the projectile will appear several frames later.

so for 236d, it takes 46 frames after command input for the 'puddle' to form; by this point, the move has already activated so the gier will appear on the screen no matter what (unless the player gets hit while charging the gier). so i think it's often the case that you think the move is activating after you hit the opponent, although in reality the move has already activated before you get that hit in.

i hope that was easy to understand.

you can do stacking of gier even without button bind.

i think he's talking about charging multiple giers on the screen at once. 'gier stacking' isn't really putting multiple giers on the screen at once. it simply means that another gier move of choice will appear before the shadow disappears (after the previous gier move is complete) and return to the player's feet.

1) I'm a Lightning Heart/Rock Kira user, and I face off against a Lightning Saki player that seems to able to noob me out at all times. To be more specific, I can't seem to beat her j.C at ALL (whether I'm playing with Heart or Kira), whether I'm on the ground or air. Another issue that I'm facing is if we're both on the ground and I try to do any kind of ground mixup, he seems to mash his way out every single time with 2A, 2B, or 66. Whenever I try to GC or backstep that shit, I seem to get caught anyway. I know there's something that I'm missing, so If anyone's had experience fighting against Lightning Saki with Heart/Kira, could I have a few general pointers? Is there anything Saki has that is unsafe? Can I burst out of certain strings to make them punishable?

2) Question for Lightning Users: Does anyone know how long is the clash window for 66? When does it become active? I feel it's immediate, but I seem to get hit on the startup of 66...

3) Heart players: When is the exact time you are supposed to finish her ground loop combo with 5A, j.A, j.B, j.4B, dj.B, j.2C? To be more specific, whenever I finish the last IAD j.A, j.C and I try to go for the 5A, they are able to jump out after the 5A. Is there something that I'm missing here?

4) For Kira players: How do you fight fucking noobs with Kira? It's incredibly frustrating to try anything, only to get hit by fucking 09173590871235 2As
I read this on the wiki concerning her throws:

"...Unfortunately, it isn't instant (it's actually a 5f attack), so many characters' fast pokes will beat out your throw. It is generally a good idea to clash a couple of times in order to bait the opponent into using a slower string attack..."

My question is: how do you beat someone that does NOTHING BUT MASH?

1) For Heart, you can Homing Cancel backwards (4D) into jab DP. That'll give the attack extra invincibility frames. Tends to like beat out almost anything. As Kira, though, I guess you could do her DP throw on the j.C, but if that doesn't work, you could try 2B. Also, Saki's 2C is a slide-kick that'll leave her vulnerable for a smidge if you anticipate it and 4D. It might be harder for Heart to punish, but it's a free Kira-Sama Driver in Kira's situation.

On a more defensive note, watch out after Saki smacks you around with her BnB. Most likely there's going to be a lightning super set-up.

4) Use everything else she's got? You know she's got loops too, right? <.< Watch a few vids, they're potentially more damaging than a single KSD (though not super version). It's the reason she's so damn good, KSD is used to punish up close, and she's got a solid game everywhere else. Why not respond by spamming 2A yourself to start a clash war and like jump straight up or 4D?

DropGate
05-18-2008, 03:18 PM
Concerning Heart's loop, most of the time you're going to want to go straight into the air combos instead of hitting 5A before. Such as:

Starter(s)
-2A, 2B, 2C, 236A~6D...
-j.b, j.4B, 2B, 2C, 236A~6D... [overheads]

Loops
-iad.B, 6B, iad.A, j.C, 5C, iad.A, j.C [land], j.A, j.B, j.4B, dj.B, dj.2C
-iad.A, j.C, dash 5C, iad.A, j.C, dash 5C, iad.A, j.C [land], j.A, j.B, j.4B, dj.B, dj.2C

I haven't played around with Heart in a while so this is about all that I know.

Concerning the Kira question, yeah going for the loops is probably the best option. Another option would be to utilize 4D [6D for stone or anything with great clashing] ~ 360°+a/b/c if you really want the grabs. Trust me, once they notice how much her KSD's do they won't be as mashy [hopefully].

One thing I have been thinking about recently, is sometimes when friend does Saki's rushdown super while I'm Kira I get knocked down instead of taking the entire super. I think I'm jumping before the first hit or guard cancel it, but anyone care to explain what might be happening?

White Rob
05-18-2008, 03:57 PM
Wing-Zero: Use Rock's super armor on 3[C] and 6[C] to give yourself space. These moves clash right away, and each time the move clashes, you'll get pushed back just a little bit so that jabs won't reach but your throws will. Also, if you can anticipate the clashes, buffer a super throw out of it since it has invincibility at startup that beats jabs too.

Here's a video that'll give you an idea of how ridiculous Rock Kira's 3[C] and 6[C] attacks are: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVx8nlRUFYg

Abuse the forward homing dash with Rock too. Using the dash as an anti-air is particularly useful. If your opponent tries to just mash his way through it, you'll have all day to buffer the super throw.

Also, the back version of the guard cancel is great against 2A since it jumps right over the opponent's lows and leaves you at the perfect range for a jab throw in many instances.

DO NOT try to outpoke Saki. Her 2A is something like 4 frames, which blows your 2A (10 frames) out of the water. You need to assume that you're constantly at frame disadvantage when playing Kira. Anytime you think you should poke, you should probably be going for a reversal timed jab kira driver since it is faster than any of her pokes. If you are out of the range of the throw, or you think the opponent will jump cancel their attack, get in the air too. Kira's j.A is great: very fast, clashes, ticks into throws perfectly, and can start combos if done air-to-air.

Just found this and I know that Lilica's best arcana is considered Time, but she has some pretty stupid stuff in Gier.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=_VcdkEcD-cE&feature=PlayList&p=058AEC37BBFE8E96&index=0

Seriously if I didn't have a broken button now I would definitely be trying that shit out.

HeartNana
05-18-2008, 09:45 PM
Lilica's best arcana has always been considered to be lightning. Gier is good with her because she can end corner combos in 2C and then go into gier into charged 6[C]. It's very similar to what she does with Lightning, except Lightning has all the clash stuff too, in addition to the corner loops. Gier is really good if you're already on the offense with Lilica, but lightning allows her to get back on the offense really easily because of clash, while it's a bit harder with gier because you don't have much of a defensive aspect if you're getting rushed.

Not that time is bad, but Lilica does more damage with lightning, has a bigger bar, has resets, has the clash stuff, etc. I just personally find time more fun, so that's why I lean toward that, but lightning is overall better.

Use your bigass normals to keep them out, and if they do get in, GC 720 them into the ground. If someone's just mashing, they prolly don't know how to beat your j.C or your splash. Hit em with it, and combo accordingly. Repeat until dead.

I think most of these options have already been covered, but anyway:

If you're in close and they mash jab, do 6GC into 720A+B.

If you're at a distance and they mash jab, do 360A: it has longer range than Saki's 5A and 2A and will stuff them as long as you're out of Saki's range.

Edit: Oh yeah, I just realized: if you're at a distance and out of range of her jabs, you can also use Earth's 41236D fist to stuff her jabs. (360A does more damage, though.)

If he's mashing 2A, then 5B should stuff it at a distance. It seems to have a 50/50 chance of either stuffing or clashing with her 5A, though (assuming he mashes A like an HRAP's rapid-fire ). Also, note that 5B's startup clashes with mid/high attacks only, not low ones.

At the proper range, 3[C] (intentional clash) into 720A+B also works. If you ever try Lightning Kira, you can replace 720A+B with 623D for the clash dagger.

Lastly, you can jump up and above their head, then come down and go for a cross-up / fake cross-up with j.2C.

As for Saki's j.C, is it one of those moves that never clashes? If it clashes, then you can spam Kira's j.A safely. If it doesn't clash, then... I suggest either blocking, or 4D out of the way and try to punish.

White-Rob: do Kira's 3[C] and 6[C] have clash frames throughout their startup, regardless of whether Kira is using Lightning? I think 3[C] does but I've never really tested either of them without Lightning. If they do, then I guess that partially defeats the purpose of using Lightning with her.

Personally, I find that Earth Kira never works as well for me in practice as it looks in theory. For example, her super-armoured 3[C] and 6[C] always seem to fail me because there's such a large window between the end of their super armour and the start of their active hit frames, so I often get hit out of them anyway. Also, I find Earth's 6[D] to be a burden rather than a benefit: you lose 6GC (Earth's 6GC has way too much startup to be useful, imo), and apparently the all-powerful shield doesn't even protect you against low attacks. :shake:

It's entirely possible that I'm using those "features" in totally the wrong way. I've just had bad experiences with Earth Kira and admittedly I haven't spent very much time trying to figure that combination out. <_<

During the 421 A/B/C air combo enders, 236236D (Gier super). If you do this more often, you'll get another free combo if you time your 6[C] correctly. And no more of that 5B > 5C > 236A+B BS:bluu:

Don't worry, I'll work on it. I'm new at the commentating business and tend to say stupid stuff. But it was saki vs saki, so what else would you say besides 'OH MY GEEZUS FLASHKICKS!' :|

Maybe at MWC orka and I can do some more stuff if he's down for it.

edit @ Tiggy: It was actually reaaalllllllly late Saturday night. Sunday actually at that time.

Sabin- Yep. Started playing Arcana while waiting for T6, but now I think I'll keep playing this alongside T6 0_o.

Now I have a few more questions for all the Heart players out there:

1) I was watching Ruu vs. Everyone, and I saw 6B linking into another normal WITHOUT a homing cancel...how is that possible? Is that in regular AH or something?

2) Does 236A/B give frames on block?

3) Does Heart have any tech traps/cross up situations like Kamui? I've made up a few...just not sure if they are any good...

4) What do you guys think about Heart vs. Kamui? Are there any advantages that Heart has? I'd especially like your opinion on this, Sabin...

If my questions aren't as detailed as last time, it's cause I'm typing on an iPod touch...which is really tiring >_<

Thanks in advance

Hm...is there a beginner character/arcana to learn the game with?

It's fun, but damn, not that easy.

Go for the generic Shoto characters such as Heart or Saki. Not much to learn about them but they are legit enough to be solid characters in the game. Both of them have abuse-able uppercuts, good normals, and not many specific arcana mixups/game/combos. They're pretty much average when it comes to anything spectacular in game.

Arcana wise is possibly up to you but I would suggest lightning (either Saki or Heart), love (Heart), wind (Saki), or fire (just an ok arcana)
You can figure out which arcana you want by just how you want your character to behave.

Good example would be love and dark (Gier). If you are projectile happy/want an easy arcana then Love would be best for your character. If you want to have useful mixup and crossup game/easy unblockables with 6C/3C involved, choose Gier. Good possibilities between Arcana and Character are everywhere in the game. Try and look for yours. Its a fun process.

Now I will say that there are strong character/arcana possibilities, but dont let that stop you from choosing what you're most comfortable with.

Hmmm well one idea for a "beginner character" would be Heart. She's got a super-easy beginner combo: 2A 2B 2C 236A 236A+B. A little more advanced would be 2A 2B 2C 236B 623A+B 5[D] and then do a short air combo. She also has a dp (623x).

Edit: Fiona is also a good beginner character. In fact, she's probably the S-tier beginner character. Her C moves have great range and deal a lot of damage. You can use 2A 2B 2C 5C 5C as a dead-simple "combo". She's also one of the few characters with an overhead on the ground, that you can combo into a super: 6B 214A+B. I think pretty much everyone gets destroyed when they face a Fiona player for the first time.

Edit 2: Kamui's another nice beginner character. Good range and a dead-easy combo that's still used at a high level: 5B 5C 236A+B.

I used to consider Kira a good beginner character, because you can get nice damage off of a 360x grab, and I found her splash loop to be pretty easy to learn (5B 6D 2A j.A j.2C 2A j.A j.2C 5A 5A 623A). However, she can be difficult to use because you can't just mash buttons when you're up-close or after a guard cancel: other characters' A moves beat her 5A and 2A normals and her 360x grabs. So for a beginner, she has high damage (compared to other beginner combos) but she is also hard to use on the defensive.

As for beginner Arcanas, imo any of the following would work okay, I think: Love, Lightning, Fire, Dark/Gier, Wind, Water, Evil/Poison. Steel is a bad beginner Arcana because you don't gain metre for hitting the opponent, so you'd have to constantly remember to charge your metre. Similarly, Plant doesn't give you metre when you get hit. Time and Earth change your 6D messing up most of your usual combos, plus Time regenerates homing bars much slower than the other Arcanas, and Earth screws up your 6GC as well.

Sup man. Just wanted to say your Nina is sick in DR, as is the rest of ATL Tekken. Too bad you guys ended up beating NYC Tekken though. :P Get at me next Final Round fo sho, and say whats up to my boys Bane and Clint for me, they most def remember me. Now onto your questions...

1) I was watching Ruu vs. Everyone, and I saw 6B linking into another normal WITHOUT a homing cancel...how is that possible? Is that in regular AH or something?
can u show me the vid of what ur talking about? because...thinking off the top of my head, no way should heart be able to link a 6b (you're talking about her medium kick, right) into another normal, you can only link it into a special, or you can cancel it into another move in clash situation. I don't really remember it working in AH vanilla either, but the video would be a huge help if you can link me to it. Kamui can link into her 6B off 2B, 4B, and 5a/2a but i dont remember her being able to actually COMBO after this. Though, there is the slight chance I could be wrong (cant test now.) Link me bro!

2) Does 236A/B give frames on block?
i dont really study frame data that much, but its safe on block. you probably get minor advantage, but its not really enough to do much. keep in mind though, that its still a great move for other reasons, and because of the guardcancel system, using this in a string can be punished regardless of the fact that it's safe on block. Guard cancel is a potential "get out of jail card" that I prefer to 3s's parry system or Tekken's crush system, cause the risk reward is more balanced for it (in my opinion, of course :P)

3) Does Heart have any tech traps/cross up situations like Kamui? I've made up a few...just not sure if they are any good...
Ok, first, theres a few things you need to know about arcana engine:

1) Corners don't really exist, you CAN and WILL get crossed up randomly in the corner during rushdown, due to moves having exaggerated hitboxes. This means that moves like heart air 5a, air 5b (even her air 4b), and her j2c CAN and WILL cross up in many situations, even in the corner, sometimes outside of the corner.

2) Tech trap setups can and do work in this game, and are good. However, when the opponent techs:

- they can still break normal grabs, though they are in a disadvantaged situation. The same does not apply to command throws from the character or arcana command throws (thinking of water's arcana command throw here, so rape rape rape)

- they can cancel their recovery animation into a special move or super, or arcana move...cant really do anything else IIRC. So, you need to be careful.

This is where the mindgames come in..knowing these rules, you can be prepared to rape during techtrap situation. Ok, now check it:

I'm not really a flashy player or stylish player, so I can't give you much in the way of creative tech trap setups. However, i can tell you the ones that do work, and why they work. ill start off with lightning and gier.

standard setup with lightning heart is aircombo (ill assume you know her bread and butter combo by now, if not ill answer next post lol) ending into j2c, XX 236x2+D (cancelling into lighting/gier arcana super), both are holdable. Now, you have a few options in this situation, all putting you at heavy advantage. Assuming they are in the corner. I'm not going to list them all cause theres way too many, but ill show you what i'm talking about.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=KNrjn3Lq6j8 <-- check 8:20 at this video here. Not that this video is a ego boost or anything, cause Justin is on my level in AH now, but just wanted to show you the setup here.

I do air 5a into 5c, 5HC into 2a uppercut super, 5HC, air 5b > air 4b > j2c xx 236x2+D for gier.

Notice how I'm basically...right in the corner...and in this specific situation, I still have a double jump stored, and Gier is right on top of Kamui in the corner. Knowing this, when she gets up, I doublejump (me being in the corner) and let go of gier right on top of Kamui's sprite...which makes it totally ambiguous. (b/c of doublejump, remember what I said about corners.) I got hit by this setup by some dude in Japan and I was blocking in the corner, its hella dirty.

Here's another video (of Reoth) showing craz mindfucking tricks with Gier Arcana. Basically, the whole round during these gier setups, the kira player is expecting Heart to go for the standard option after oki, and Heart goes for something else, every time and she gets mindfucked. Though, that's just imo cause I can't read their minds, but from my experience.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=VdyD_EUz6gM

There's lots of good setups in this video, but check out 3:22 especially (Kira can't tech in this situation!) she got reset with j2c after Heart OTG'ed her..alternatively, he could have gone for 5a into 3c (unblockable reset setup,) but he went for the j2c crossup instead, and Kira didn't block it. Hella dirty.

Standard lightning oki/tech setup:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=CEBw15XJRus

You'll want to be looking at 00:42 here. Neither setup hits, but I dont want to search through every arcana 1 video to find it right now. Rather, I can tell you whey they didnt hit:

For that lightning setup at 00:42 - Time lilica has a full screen ground dash because of time arcana that she can use to get out of the corner to escape disadvantageous situation. Remember what I said about you being able to use arcana moves after tech...Heart player thought Lilica was going to try to escape: the lightning super is holdable, so he let it go early, Lilica didn't take the bait though.

at 02:42 in that video, similar situation, exact opposite thing happens...after Lilica techs, she uses her homing to get out of the corner, but Heart didnt let go.

That was exhausting. But hopefully it helps you brainstorm ideas. That's just for two arcanas, theres waaaay more setups. I could go on forever. I could literally talk about this for a hour or two. Now, for your 3rd question.

4) What do you guys think about Heart vs. Kamui? Are there any advantages that Heart has? I'd especially like your opinion on this, Sabin...

If my questions aren't as detailed as last time, it's cause I'm typing on an iPod touch...which is really tiring >_<

Thanks in advance
its just my opinion, but i feel that heart has a slight advantage in this matchup (i personally think its 5.5 Heart/4.5 Kamui) but I think some other players might disagree. Here are Heart's advantages in this matchup. From what I've seen, rushdown Lightning Kamui works well in this match btw (though other arcanas can definetely rock.)

- Kamui is weak to clash. Heart has nothing but godlike clash moves. 5b for antiair clashes with all of Kamui's air attacks (Heart into 2a after clash, into aircombo - be careful though, Kamui can air counter out of clash situation fucking YOU for this...this is why lightning is so good in the matchup, since you can 623+D lightning instead on clash if you predict Kamui air counter - you dont get massive damage, but you dont eat a fat combo either.)

- Heart 6b, and 5c, fuck with Kamui heavily as well. Huge clash windows for both these moves. Combined with Lightning dash, Heart becomes basically one huge walking clash sprite that's hard to hit, especially for Kamui.

- clash into DP, then super is godlike vs her as well. For example - Kamui mashes 2a (common occurence.) Heart counters with 6b. Clash situation happens, Kamui does nothing, heart cancels into DP off clash into super, Kamui is X_X Since Heart initiated the clash situation, much harder for Kamui to react to this properly (she can superjump cancel, 4HC away, but its hard, and there are counters to both of these as well.)

Kamui has the range advantage though, so if you get reckless, you WILL
lose the match. But anyway, thats why I feel Heart has advantage in that match.

Any more questions? Don't tire me out anymore.

It's a 9 minute vid, but it happens in the 1st match with Ruu vs. Marneto. It happens like 4-5 times the whole match (The first time happens at 0:13). Ruu hits 6B, dash 5A, 2B, 2C, into combo, with NO homing cancel at all...o_o Note that it only happened on Kamui during this entire vid...it didn't occur on Fiona, Heart, or Yoriko...

Also, on google video there are some matches of you vs. Pincho...omfg those matches were crazy as hell...how does he move like that with Heart? Damn...

1) (noob question) How important is homing meter management? Is there even such a thing? It feels like you can burn it as much as you want, since it comes back quickly...

2) How do you land the 214A/B after landing a super upper? Do you have to homing a certain way to get high enough to do the combo? I can't seem to land the 214A/B at all...

3) While watching you vs. Marneto, I saw you jump at him, land 623A before you landed, 2HC to the ground, and attempt the ground loop...is that even possible? I tried doing it, but it seems they float just a little too high...

4) (AH2 question) Is Heart still good? How does she fare against the new chars (namely, Clarice/Catherine/Zenia)? Does her 5B still anti-air clash well? Does she work well with any of the new arcanas?

5) In your post, you noted that 236A/B/C had other uses besides being used as a string ender; what else could it be used for? As far as I can tell, I saw you/Pincho use it as bait for 623A--->super...

That's all I have for today. More than likely, I'll have even more ?s tomorrow :p

Side note: I'm coming to NY early July for a mini vacation. I would love to meet up with the elite AH players and get owned... :) I'm a pad warrior only though =p

1. Homing bars are very important, they can give you a forced recovery off of a wall slam [such as fully charged 6C] or deal a little bit of extra damage. They can also be used for some mix-ups, like canceling a move you usually wouldn't. It really matters most to how you play, but honestly I always try to save one bar for.

4. She's still a good character, she's still pretty balanced and can use pretty much all of the arcana like in AH1/F.

O_O

It looks like it happened after 6B clashed: Ruu allowed it to hit, then cancelled it with a dash. I wonder if you can always cancel it with a dash, or if it's some kind of post-clash late cancel... *heads to go try it out*

Edit: Yes, Heart is cancelling the *clash* into a dash, however she waits a brief moment first to allow 6B to connect before she cancels the clash. She can't wait too long, though, or she won't be able to cancel the clash anymore. You can do this with Heart's 5B as well, and probably with just about any move that hits shortly after it clashes.

(The HRAP's rapid-fire sliders do have a use! :looney:)

By the way, is that Ruu the 3s Ryu player?

Bill307
05-22-2008, 01:38 AM
Well, I just learned/confirmed a bunch of stuff in training mode about clashes.

After any clash (i.e. after the "clash freeze"), there are a handful of frames where you can cancel the clash (as shown in the vid wing-zer0 linked to). These are necessary because when you clash with a projectile/Gier/Maori's top/etc., there is no "clash freeze", so these few frames are your only chance to input something to cancel the clash. I find clashing with a projectile is a good way to get a feel for how long the post-clash cancel window is.

With Kira as another example, when 5B clashes it is sometimes possible to dash-cancel it after the move hits, and go into her usual 2A j.A etc. combos without using a homing cancel. If the clash happens during most of the first animation frame (when her fist is all the way back) then this is not possible. If the clash happens near the end of the first animation frame or during the second animation frame (when her fist is about to bash her opponent's tiny brains in) then this can be done.

To block after a clash, you must SJC the clash, then hold block asap: holding block alone after a clash does nothing. Sabin mentioned this months ago, but you can actually block on the ground during the start-up of a super jump, but not during the start-up of a regular jump. I'm pretty sure you can't regular-jump-cancel a clash, but I don't feel like going back to confirm it. (Note: I don't know if you can be ground-thrown during the start-up of a super jump, but I discovered you cannot be air-thrown during it. If you can be thrown during it, then I guess SJC won't save you from Kira's 720 post-clash: only 4D will.)

As you might've guessed, with Lightning you can cancel into the clash dagger (623D) after any clash, including during 6GC when your opponent hits your red shield.

The clash frames you get with Lightning when you 66 dash appear to start immediately, however they do not necessarily last all the way until the end of the dash! Case in point: Lightning Kira's 66 dash does not have clash frames near the end of it.

Kira's 3[C] innately clashes from its very first frame, however her 6[C] does not clash immediately unless you are using Lightning. You can check this by clashing with the Love laser super.

I believe this was mentioned a long time ago, but anyway: on the ground, if you hold down and press the same button repeatedly while clashing, your character will automatically alternate between 2x and 5x (or between 3x and 6x, etc.). E.g. to clash with the Love laser super using Lightning, you don't need to manually alternate between 3[C] and 6[C]: you can just hold [3] and press C repeatedly. However, if you do not hold down, then pressing the same button repeatedly after a clash will do nothing (because you cannot repeat the same normal twice in a row after a clash, except for most aerial normals).

Dieu Mort's Arcana Blaze clashes! I witnessed Heart's 5A clash with his hand.

On a totally unrelated topic, here's a small bug with Kira's air grab that you guys might find amusing:
http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=BxnuO38SlfQ - fast forward to 1:40 and watch

If you want to reproduce this yourself, then good luck. I spent a couple of hours trying to reproduce it one day (just for fun and to see how easy it would be), and got it to happen only once. Seems like Kira has to be as close to the ground as possible when she does her air grab. I'm not sure if the opponent's position matters, but in the end I reproduced it by grabbing the opponent when they air-recovered (with A/B/C, not with D) on the ground. IIRC, I used Time Kira's 6[C] clone (giving me time to jump and fall down before the opponent gets up) and set the dummy to aerial recover only, then just kept trying to grab them as close to the ground as possible. In any case, I recommend not trying to reproduce it.

Edit:

1) (noob question) How important is homing meter management? Is there even such a thing? It feels like you can burn it as much as you want, since it comes back quickly...
In addition to what DropGate said, when I have 2 or 3 homing bars X'd out, I run away until I get all my bars back. With no homing bars, not only are your combos nerfed, if you try to apply pressure and your opponent does 6GC, then you won't be able to HC out of your move. Wall-techs are really useful to prevent your opponent from getting an extra combo on you after a wall-slam. Ground-techs are really useful to limit your opponent's oki options, e.g. to prevent unblockable setups. So to reiterate DropGate's point, having at least 1 homing bar available at all times is very useful.

As for homing bar management, personally, I always wall-tech and ground-tech whenever possible, partly for the reasons above and partly because, like you said, the bars regenerate so quickly. (These became a lot easier to do once I realized I could just hold D.) I try not to use more than one homing bar when I want to approach my opponent or go for a cross-up, though. When I'm being rushed down, I have a bad habit of using all my GCs up quickly, and if they all fail then I end up still under pressure, but without the threat of GCing. :shake: I would definitely like to be more patient while blocking, although I guess it depends on their ability to mix me up if I block for too long.

Lastly, when I'm debating whether or not to activate my Arcana to burst out of a combo, I take into account (among other things) how many of my homing bars are X'd out. If all 3 are X'd out then I feel extra-inclined to activate since it will restore them all. (Maybe this is actually a bad idea, though, because if I'm going to end up in a long combo, then my homing bars will be partially/fully restored by the time their combo ends, anyway...)

So something weird has been happening lately. I learned Saki in like 10 minutes the other day, and was fighting my friend who's new to the game and playing Kamui, both of us using Gier. He had just knocked me down with teh 1337 Kamui combo (B, C, Super). Upon waking up I tried to do Flash Kick super cuz woof said I should in the tutorial vid, and to my surprise, the rush super came out instead. This happened multiple times over the course of the session. Does anyone know why my controls seem to be reversing themselves?

frank, as you may be aware, there are dozens of moves that cross up your wake up in arcana (mostly directional throws)... and kamui's 236a+B super just so turns out to be one of them.

the weird thing about that super, though, is that it actually crosses up kamui also. this is the reason why people accidentally get the wrong gier move sometimes after 236a+b with kamui sometimes.

you can validate that the move does indeed cross kamui up if you go into training mode, do 236a+b, then try to do her projectile super immediately on recovery; it will not come out unless you reverse the command direction (41236a+b).

Upon waking up I tried to do Flash Kick super cuz woof said I should in the tutorial vid, and to my surprise, the rush super came out instead. This happened multiple times over the course of the session. Does anyone know why my controls seem to be reversing themselves?

But yeah, as Yosh said, whatever direction your character is facing getting up off the ground is what direction you need to do it in. So if saki is facing left, then you need to perform the super as if she's facing left (even if the opponent is to your right)

She'll automatically turn around and stuff when DOING the super, but the input is backwards for some things.

On a totally unrelated topic, here's a small bug with Kira's air grab that you guys might find amusing:
http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=BxnuO38SlfQ - fast forward to 1:40 and watch

I don't think this is a bug...It's just a super low altitude air tech punish done right at the moment when the opponent teched...:looney:

Kickass. I look forward to playing you guys.

Kira mirror matches are definitely in order. ... Man that matchup is gonna be so nuts.

I'm really hoping there will be lots of time for AH casuals at the event. I'm registering for 3s as well, but AH competition is so much harder to come by. (Also, I enjoy AH more. :wgrin:) In addtion, I think this will be a great opportunity to learn a lot more about the game, especially about many of Kira's matchups where I have little/no experience so far.

Reminds me of that one video from SB2 between Keits (Kira) and orka (Maori) where Keits exclaims, "Oh fuck, I've never even played against her before!" *game starts* "She's got assists?! WTF?!" Too funny.

Just so I don't get flamed by SK, question for you all. How does Lilica's flash step loop actually work [notation wise]? I've tried it before like 236A~A+C, B; but I think that takes to long from what I see in the vids of lilica. Only reason I'm asking this instead of practicing this right now is that I'm on a werid button layout for the time being and can't.

 That's what I thought the first time. The notation is 5B > 214A+C. You could also do 5B > 236A+C, I've seen players do it like that before.

As far as the layout goes, I'm sure you know the standard layout. But if not:

Like Tiggy pointed out, there's a short-cut in doing the FS which is to cancel out the recovery frames of a normal on hit with 214A+C or 236A+C where as you need to do 236/214x A+C if you were doing it raw(no hit cancel).
eg. (corner) 2B 2C > 6D > 5A [5B > 214A+C]x3 > dash 5A [5B > 214A+C]x3 etc...

On Saturday (yesterday) I tried to record as many AHF matches as I could after my 1st match. I had to leave before the end of the AHF tourney, unfortunately . I'll try to get more AHF and AH2 footage today as well. I can record matches by request, too. I watched some of my AHF losses last night and I feel like I learned a lot from them, so others might want to take advantage of that as well. (If the loss is embarrassing then I can upload it to someplace like SendSpace rather than Youtube.)

I'll list all the videos I've got and let people opt-in if they'd like them uploaded on Youtube or something, I suppose? I don't know what CappsIndigo usually does. Except for my matches, which I'm planning on uploading by default unless my opponents object. Thinking of uploading the last 2 matches I got as well by default, between Chicken Fat's Kamui and (I think) Spooky's Saki, since they were all close rounds :O.

If I can record any AHF or AH2 tourney finals today then I'll upload those by default as well.

I REALLY hope I can get some AHF casuals in before I have to leave today. I'd like to face HeartNana and JustinW in AHF at least once as well.

Oh yeah, big thanks to Kevin and Skisonic for recording my matches for me!

... Oh shit. I'll write more later. I sure hope the time on this computer is wrong, because if it really is 4:12 then Canada is fucked for missing the 3s Team Tourney... gtg l8r

I don't think Playing konoha really helps out kira, but playing Kira does help Konoha out.
AH2 Konoha is grabtastic and has no useful IAD. Practicing and figuring out Air command grab tech traps, and 720s (without 3 levels) in that game with no training mode really leaves you with only one option.

But i'll leave the rest for the AH2 thread

Then I ran out of time to make a decision, panicked, and pressed 6A+D. I should have just spun!

"I'll be ready next time though." That's basically the same attitude I took after my first AH1 tourney. I haven't had any opportunity to rematch any of those guys who used to destroy me back then (except Nagata Lock), but I'm more than just "ready" for them, now.

I think I am going to make a video tutorial on Fiona Mayfield + Fire arcana and give the combos that she can do..

I know a fair amount of combos, but is there a list of all the biggest ones ? In case I miss something..

Also, anything in particular you would like to see in the video ?

This will be my first combo video, but I have some editing skills.. it won't be overly complicated, just the simple combos. I'll also make a text document to go along with it.

The BnB I use with fire is (optional start with A or 2A,) B, 2C, 6D > B, iad cancel, jA, jB, land > jump, jA, jB, djcancel, djA, djB, djC, 632146D, 214C.

This doesn't work in the corner though (to make it work, you drop the djA and lose like a sliver of damage), so in the corner you skip djA and hit with a 236D (Meteor) after djC. Following the fireball, you do another djC then do the 632146D super. From here you can follow up with another boost straight up (8D) and finish off with 2C. Avoid doing the Heaven's Fall (214A/B/C) because the opponent will tech out before you hit. To reiterate, the notation for the corner combo would be:

(Optional start with A or 2A,) B, 2C, 6D > B, iad cancel, jA, jB, land > jump, jA, jB, djcancel, djB, djC, 236D, djC, 632146D, 8D> 2C

The corner variation eats up another boost, but because the combo takes up so much time, you'll have recharged the boost you burned on the first homing cancel by then so it's... kinda like you only used one homing bar. Damage is almost half a bar.

Err, this is what I use though. If someone can show me a more damaging corner combo I'd be much grateful.

I was thinking to myself, I know I should do Catherine's most damaging combo with 5A 2B etc., but I could never do it correctly in casuals, so I hesitated to do it.

Faight: I was wondering who you were! ... Unfortunately, I uhhh... don't remember what you looked like. Man, I should have just asked who everyone else was when we were all watching/playing AH2. >/.<

I didn't get to play a lot of people. I got only one casual game all weekend long (vs JWong, which looked a lot like my 1st game vs Art), and as far as I know the only AHF casuals lasted for about 10 minutes Sunday evening. Next time, maybe we can organize some way for us to get casuals against each other, e.g. on a Saturday night after that day's tournaments have finished, somewhere off the venue perhaps.

Yeah man the vids didn't help except that they made me feel more discouraged that I can't do those combos:bgrin:

I'll learn sooner or later I guess; I've ben doing it before, unless you have another alternative...

I'm having trouble following up on her combos though every time I cancel and try to follow up I just fall down back to the ground...how the hell you do those follow-ups!?

... It kind of sounds like you're doing the homing cancels incorrectly...? One of the first problems I had in AH was that I kept using 5D instead of 6D. Another thing is, make sure you're holding D for the right amount of time: sometimes you press D quickly, while other times you have to hold D down until you're beside your opponent.

In addition, make sure you're following the combos in the Wiki correctly. (I'm assuming they're correct.)

To be honest, I'm not really sure what problem you're having when you try to do the combos. If these suggestions don't help, then we might be able to help better if you can be more specific about what's causing you trouble.

Also, you're new here, everyone is a dick to you/ignores you unless:

1) You have premium
2) Someone knows you on the boards
3) You won some type of tournament and people know about it
4) You've been here long enough and people see you post regularly

I'm even making a damn combo video for the game to grow and people are ignoring me because they dont know me.
Sorry man, I'm nice though so don't you worry.
Yeah, I figured that. Still sucks though lol.

But whatever, his overall game is way more solid than mine. Theese were some great matches at C3! Wish I could've been there. Since the MWC AH tourney happens to fall directly on my birthday (6/21), I'll be there....hopefullly.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention: during the AH2 tournament a couple of SSBB players were watching. I started talking with them. Apparently they haven't played any fighting games besides Brawl, but they loved AH2, wanting to buy it once it comes out on console. In addition (and more on-topic), I told them about AH1 being released in the US recently on the PS2, and costing only $30, and they sounded very interested in buying it as well. +2 AH1 players!

There's people who are good at strategizing, but just have a hard time implementing it. Similarly, there are some good players who give REALLY crappy advice on how to play.

There's plenty of people who can watch a ton of vids, see what's good etc, but when it comes to playing, for some reason, they have a hard time. Doesn't mean that their advice is any better or worse. It depends on the advice itself.

Tiggy - what kinda advice did you give chickenfat?

AH2 is godlike. Thanks to everyone I played in ah1 as well. (all 2 of you, I would have played casuals but I had to watch my equipment pretty much the entire time I was at this event.)

Like I said, I have no real practical experience with this game.

And now there is video evidence of that on the internets!

Canto

Thanks man ! I learned that combo just now.. damn the timing on that is tough.

I'll be sure to include it in the video and give thanks.

Gier Unblockables are a strong part of Kamui/Gier's game, and without using them, you're severly limiting yourself imo.

Tiggy is correct anyways, as i was saying before, it depends on the advice, and in this case, it's right.

Hey Bill307, got better on the follow ups with Saki, at least her basic ones. I tried to cancel her super move with the kicks (homing cancel) and the cpu still has a tendency to recover before I can continue to follow up. Is there a remedy to this? Or am I just not to fast enough like on the vids? lol:bgrin:

HELL YEAH, that's what I like to hear! I just got done ranting off at the LG peeps for saying "GGsPO" from the Canadian AH scene 5 months ago when they lost their arcade cabinet. (Note to Canto: I feel some of your pain, man: I posted in their LG topic a few weeks ago asking if anyone was interested in some AHF games, and even though I've met these guys IRL, my post was completely ignored. Now the same thing is happening again after I mentioned the C3 AHF/AH2 results. So I'm sorry that we basically did the same thing to you in this topic. )

But I feel a lot more motivated now hearing some Arcana Hype from a fellow Canadian again! Man, I would love nothing more than to show up to G3HQ and have my Kira blown out of the water -- literally -- by you and Rae. And you've got the videos now to see how to destroy me with Kamui, too.

Meanwhile, I'll try to practice a secondary or two vs strakka here in Waterloo, so that next time I'll be able to use a variety of characters, like you can. Maybe he can even come down too, if he has the time.
