Cheat Sheets! aka Character Pages for Beginners!

Look at it from the perspective of someone new to the game: how are they going to get started fast with a new character? Especially if they don't have anyone around who can advise them in-person for their new character?

For one thing, the Wiki pages are definitely not suitable for someone who wants to pick up a character quickly.

Here's an example of a cheat sheet for Kira aimed at beginners:
(Note that there's no command list because it's available in the game already, but we might want to include one anyway.)
(Also note that we'd need a quick intro to the notation as well.)

Appearance: Has a giant blue blob.

Strengths: Easy damage w/ 360s; long-ranged attacks; simple high-damage combos; easy mixups between attacks and 360s.

Weaknesses: Slow; on the defensive, can only block and guard cancel or try to jump away; enemy's A attacks are faster than all of her (non-super) moves, including her 360s.

Best Pokes: 2B, 2C, j.A, j.2C
Worst Pokes: 2A (slow), 5A (slow), j.B (slow)

Recommended Beginner Arcanas:
- Fire (236236D invincible explosion; 3C and 6C become unblockable)
- Wind (6GC becomes pushblock)

Best Pro Arcanas: Lightning, Earth.

You may notice that there are no-homing combos and no "Arcanas to Avoid" section. That's because, in my experience, beginners rarely/never use the D button because it's not really an attack button. So they're probably not going to use any Arcana moves at all unless you give them a handful that are particularly useful for a beginner (the Pro Arcanas are just FYI more than anything). Similarly, the no-homing combos allow them to mash-out combos without having to learn how to homing cancel effectively.

Also, the reason why I described the worst pokes but not the best ones is because I expect players to try out the best pokes in-game and learn by themselves why those pokes are so good. In contrast, I don't want them to have to try out the worst pokes in order to see why they are so bad, and it'd probably take them longer to realize why those moves are so bad compared to how quickly they'll learn the benefits of the good pokes.

So, is anyone else interested in helping to make introductory pages like these for the Wiki? I can make cheat sheets for Kamui and Konoha as well, for a start.

Personally, I dislike Time Lilica because it's harder to start her BnB without 6HC and because Flash Steps are so difficult (and strenuous). So when you said you were dropping the Arcana, I figured you were switching to Lightning, or maybe to Fire, Gier, or even Plant. But instead, you switched to the only other Arcana that messes up your 6HC, and you are learning another combo that relies on Flash Step. So from my perspective, I think you're still crazy, lol. :wink: :looney:

Hmm... to me, what you describe sounds like what the Wiki should be: the existing stuff plus easier combos, easier strategies, and tips for intermediate players.

I'm thinking of something even simpler, that someone who's looking at the game for the first time can look at to get a quick feel for each character and to learn some simple stuff they can do once they've chosen one. :smile:

By the way, my friend Fareed (who learned the game last month) found the greatest Heart gimmick: 236C blocked > 623C, then he started mixing up the dp with neutral grab. It's hilarious how many times people get hit by the uppercut. :lol: He's also mastered using 3[C] and 6[C] with lightning to initiate clashes and clash repeatedly, then doing 623C or 623A+B if the opponent tries to win by mashing. He made two people quit the game with that cheat; I wish I'd never told him about it. :looney:

To be honest, I don't like the idea of cheat sheets. The Wiki was more than enough for me to get started, and I generally learn very slow when it comes to reading notations. Any new players should just play the game and look at command lists or something instead of being spoon fed...THEN they can get some help once they run into a specific problem.

If I can learn, they can most certainly learn. But the whole thing about writing up easier things to start out with is fine. And if all else fails, there's always woof's vid which is still the golden grail of AH video tutorials.

My goal with the cheat sheet idea is to allow a newcomer to have some idea of what they're doing when they first start playing, so that their first day playing can be a little more meaningful than "pushing random buttons". Keep in mind I've taught 7 people AHF from scratch (so far), so I have a lot of experience teaching people how to play for the first time (comparatively-speaking).

Thanks. I was actually gonna post those vids anyway 'cause I felt they were good games (the first two, I mean). And honestly, almost all of the good stuff you see in those vids comes from the players thinking for themselves, not from my instructions. In fact, as you can hear in the vids, I usually end up giving them waaay too much advice to the point where they don't remember any of it and just do their own thing. :looney: (Another reason why I want a short and sweet cheat sheet: to avoid information overload on day 1.)

Keep in mind that Fareed and JED are both very good in ST, C&C is good in GGAC, and Broly is learning GGAC and has used AH training mode on his own, so it's not surprising that they can pick up the game so fast. Notice, though, that Fareed is the only one who makes good use of guard cancelling, because that's something you can't carry over from any other game, and he's the one with the most AH experience.

So about those IPS patches I uploaded: it turns out the IPS format doesn't work for large files like ISOs. -_- But apparently there's something called "PPF" ("PlayStation Patch Format") that was developed for this purpose. So I'll try making PPF patches for the ISOs and see if they work.

Edit: Bah, why is this format apparently intended for .BIN and .GI images only?! There should be a program to compare ANY two files, find the differences, and then apply those differences to the original. Screw this, I'm just going to write my own program to do this. :arazz:

I'll post the patch file URLs once I've uploaded them. I can pretty much guarantee this will convert Tiggy's mix into mine successfully, however I'm not completely sure if it'll go from the original AH US to either Tiggy's mix or my own: the ISO file sizes are different and I don't know if that'll be a problem.

If the patch doesn't work, then I have a solution in mind that'll work 100%, but it'll involve remaking the ISO for Tiggy's mix from the original AH US... =/

Okay, first of all, here's the program I made:

Note: you need to have Java installed to run it (version 1.4.2 or better). I am able to run it by simply double-clicking on the .jar file, but I've heard sometimes people can't run it this way for some reason. o.O

Next, here's the file that'll patch AH US into Tiggy's mix version (and I actually tested it this time: it works perfectly :bgrin:):

How to apply the patch:

1. Have the .iso file for the AH US version ready.
2. Extract the patch file, "ARCANA_HEART.iso__to__ahv1_lba.iso.bindiff".
3. Run the program (I just double-click the .jar file and it runs, but I don't know if this'll work for everybody).
4. For the "Original File", click Browse and select the AH US .iso file.
5. For the "Patch File", click Browse and select the .bindiff patch file above.
(leave the third text field blank)
6. Click "Apply Patch to Original".
7. Enter a filename (Tiggy named his iso "ahv1_lba.iso", but you can call it whatever you want) and click Save.
8. Wait 10-15 minutes and once the program is done, it'll pop-up a message box.

And that's it! :smile: Next, I'm going to upload a patch file to go from Tiggy's mix to my own.

Let me know if there are any problems.

In other news, I've created a "favourites" AH remix: it combines some of my favourite VS tracks from Tiggy's remix with my favourites from my own remix.

Ideally I'd like to create a mix using the most popular tracks, but so far the only stage-specific feedback I've heard has been from using Tiggy's remix at one gathering, and it mostly consisted of "I've heard this track before! :bgrin:" So if you guys can post stuff like, "I love the track on so-and-so's stage!" then I'll be able to create a more informed remix. :smile:

Suggestions for new tracks are also possible. Just keep in mind that they have to be either under ~1:30, or editable so that they fit under 1:30 and loop without sounding weird. This is a really important and unfortunate restriction on the tracks that can be used. :sad:

Thanks for the feedback, Necrosis. :smile: By the way, you changed your sound in AH from Stereo to Mono, right? Because most/all of the tracks from my remixes sound like crap if you have AH set to Stereo :annoy:, whereas for some reason Tiggy's tracks sound okay.

(This is partly because "Stereo" in AH is actually mono and vice-versa.)


So H-F Blade PM'd me about suggesting new custom tracks, but I figure I'll post the response here in case other people are wondering the same thing, and for future reference.

In short, if you can send me the ADX files to put into the ISO image, then I'll do that no problem. :tup: But going from an MP3 to an ADX is relatively time-consuming, which is why I'd prefer not to have to do that part myself.

To accomplish the latter, here's a summary of the things you need to do:
1. Convert the song from MP3 to WAV format.
2. Edit the song to make it smaller than the track you wish to replace (generally ~1:30).
3. Apply dynamic range compression (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamic_range_compression) to raise the overall volume of the song.
4. Output the edited, dynamically-compressed song to WAV format, at 48khz.
5. Use the WAV editor to determine where you want the song to start and end its loop.
6. Use adxencd.exe to convert the song from WAV to ADX format.

Here are the programs I used to accomplish these tasks:
- Winamp v2.95 (to convert to WAV format)
- Stream Player v0.38 plugin for Winamp (to play ADX songs)
- Sound Solution v1.1 plugin for Winamp (to apply dynamic range compression)
- Creative Wave Studio (to do WAV editing)
- adxencd.exe

For me, the hardest part to learn by far was using Sound Solution v1.1 to apply dynamic range compression. It took me hours of reading, experimenting, and even consulting a friend who's into professional audio production before I finally understood what I was doing with that program. :sweat: However, I can write up how I used that plugin so that others can use it too without having to learn how the whole damn thing works. :razz:

The other steps should be a lot easier to learn, although it might take several hours if you've never done anything like this before. But in the end, the feeling of accomplishment and having your own remixed AH makes it all worth it. :woot:


So anyway, I'm really not in a position to take requests to do all of the above, plus I think it's beneficial for other people to learn how to do most of these tasks as well ('cause you never know when knowledge like this will come in handy :razzy:). The only exception is if someone posts an exceptional song that makes me go "OMFG THIS IS AWESOME!!", in which case I'll probably end up adding it to my own future remixes myself. :wink:

Arcana Tourney was pretty un-epic to say the least. :(

But there were some pretty impressive surprise performances, particularly from Hal and BB Hood. Hal beat Noel and Frank the Tank, and lost a very close match to Capps. BB Hood pulled off a first round upset against Ken's Kira. HF-Blade had a very nice Saki, despite limited match up exp.

I lost the Fiona battle to Chibi. We were pretty close (although I'm sure Chibi would say otherwise). I expect Fiona to go for 2c when 2b or 5b connects, so that's when I burst and go for Gier rape... but Chibi likes doing 5b > 214a+b so I got drilled to failure instead.

I also discovered D'Nyc3 plays Arcana and loves random doujin games. I guess now we have more common interests beyond shoes and clothes. :rofl:

My favorite match in the tournament was the game I won against Ken (if I even did win an entire game, I can't remember), it probably the one I played at 100%.

Agreed. So far I've only played like one or two matches with the people who were at SB3 and there's several others I haven't played at all. I especially want to play Arturo and Rob sometime (tho with Rob in Japan that may not happen :sad:) because when I first got into AH those are the names I remember the most from the vids that made me want to actually get good at the game. I think it's more accurate to say that AH1 is on its deathbed, and it has 3.5-4 months to live. We COULD choose to pull the plug on its life support but some people can't accept the death of AH1, even if most if not all of them will be able to move on.

Why stop playing before AH2 is out? Obviously I REALLY want to play AH2, much more than I want to play AH1, but I kind of can't until PS2 release.

Okay, first of all, here's the program I made:

Note: you need to have Java installed to run it (version 1.4.2 or better). I am able to run it by simply double-clicking on the .jar file, but I've heard sometimes people can't run it this way for some reason. o.O

Next, here's the file that'll patch AH US into Tiggy's mix version (and I actually tested it this time: it works perfectly :bgrin:):
ARCANA_HEART.iso__to__ahv1_lba.iso.rar (http://www.sendspace.com/file/kb7ult) (84 MB)

How to apply the patch:

1. Have the .iso file for the AH US version ready.
2. Extract the patch file, "ARCANA_HEART.iso__to__ahv1_lba.iso.bindiff".
3. Run the program (I just double-click the .jar file and it runs, but I don't know if this'll work for everybody).
4. For the "Original File", click Browse and select the AH US .iso file.
5. For the "Patch File", click Browse and select the .bindiff patch file above.
(leave the third text field blank)
6. Click "Apply Patch to Original".
7. Enter a filename (Tiggy named his iso "ahv1_lba.iso", but you can call it whatever you want) and click Save.
8. Wait 10-15 minutes and once the program is done, it'll pop-up a message box.

And that's it! :smile: Next, I'm going to upload a patch file to go from Tiggy's mix to my own.

Let me know if there are any problems.

After I installed Java 6 I couldn't get the program to work on my main drive. Ubuntu Linux seems to think the .jar is an archive file and wants to use archive manager instead of java to open it. I copied all the files over to my XP drive (which was reformatted a few days ago), downloaded Java 6 for windows and a free .rar archiving program, extracted the .bindiff files and followed your instructions for using the program. First I used the one to go from the US Arcana Heart iso to Tiggy's mix, and then used Tiggy's mix to make yours. I burned a DVD for both Tiggy's and yours but as I said they both still have the original soundtrack. I'm going to try one more time, this time I'll use Ubuntu's unrar to extract the .bindiff files because I know it's reliable, while the the windows program I downloaded may be complete trash.

edit: I got the BinaryDiff program to run on Linux, apparently being tired was making me stupid last night.

Heart is awesome. She has some of the prettiest looking combos :bgrin:

dj means double jump (i.e. j.A > j.B > dj.A > dj.B > dj.2C)
For Arcana choice, I personally use Gier. But I would advise staying away from Time. And IAD does indeed mean Instant Air Dash.


I didn't mean to make fun of Hal Ken, I haven't even met the guy yet. But I guess making fun of Yoriko means making fun of Hal....? I'm sorry Hal :sad:

Yin: As far as the US scene for AH1 goes, I'd say that Gier, Lightning, and Fire are probably the most popular arcana for Heart. Don't let that limit your choices though, I recommend playing around a bit with each arcana to see how they feel. If you find a different one that mixes well with your play style then by all means go with that.

So far I'm liking Wind.
The boomerang reminds me of Bridgets punching bear, as in you can jump around it and keep it going so it becomes an annoying element at least for the opponent...
The super is welcome as a range/in-air-forward super.
Instant Drop might be useful... And more jumps/dashes are always welcome.
But I'm going to play around a bit more, some arcana certainly seem to take some practicing to get the hang of.

The computer was giving me a hard time with the Lightning arcana, spamming those lightning bolts all over.

I really love Heart now, after playing some story mode... "A PUPPY!" :lovin:
