Neither of my parents drink. I see them take maybe 1 or 2 beers a year. Wine is totally diffrent but win-alcoholics are much rarer :wasted:
Uncles/aunts on my mom's side aren't alcoholics but very quick on the booze.

Yes on both sides of my family. Oddly enough though my parents don't drink that much. I don't Drink that much either I only drink If I'm out with friends and only if I am not driving. Even then I limit myself to 1 beer or 1 mixed drink. But my brother, sister, aunts, uncles, cousins, and Grandparents all drink themselves into a stupor on the regular. It's freaking weird.

Have they found the genes that affect alcoholism at all?

I'm not sure if alcoholism runs in my family genetically or were there just a couple drunks that had nothing to do with genetics.

Yes to both sides. That, my friends, is why I have never touched a drop of alchohol in my life. My kids will not deal with the same crap I did.

Yeah. Growing up around alcoholics/addicts might have a negative impact on you and make you more likely to do drugs, but there's a genetic aspect to it, also.

It's like being allergic to something, and it is an inheritable thing, though not always- your parents being that way doesn't automatically mean you'll respond the same way, but it's sort of a crapshoot.

Not really. I occasionally get fucked up on purpose because it's fucking fun and because I can handle my shit... but I wouldn't consider anyone in my family "alcoholic", just on a few occasions people have made asses out of themselves.

edit: I forgot my dad used to be an alcoholic before he quit cold turkey or some shit when it started affecting his health...so I'm not sure if I'd say it "runs in my family" but there are a few here and there. I've never personally saw the negative affects of drinking before like losing a job and straining your relationships with people...which is probably why I have an overall positive view of responsible drinking.

Yeah, I can tell from the replies that most of your guys are horrible at judging if alcoholism runs in your family.

Hint: if one or a couple of family members on one side of your family has issues with alcoholism, that does not mean that it runs in your family.

On both sides, but my mom doesn't drink and my dad restricts himself to a beer every few weeks or so. Smart habits.

I myself am a conservative drinker.

Addictions have already been exposed by Pen & Teller to be BULLSHIT. :)

If alcoholism is hereditary/runs in family, then so is weedism and crackism and opiumism.

And to answer the question, no.

Alcoholism on my mother's side; my grandfather to be exact.

Besides social drinking, my whole family seldom drinks.

And to answer the question, no. Do crackheads even parent any kids they might have anyways? And I'm pretty sure weed has no addictive qualities anyways, but beyond that, one has to wonder what "addiction" truely is.

That said, yes, on my fathers side. Thing is, neither of my parents drink beyond one beer or wine every holiday or get together. It's just his siblings and his mother.

I'm the only child out of four that doesn't drink, not because I look down on it (okay, a little, but I understand people are different), but because I'm a health junkie.

Actually the Penn and Teller show on addiction was fucking HORRIBLE. The quality on that show is very VERY hit and miss...

I have friend that are alcoholics. One went as far as to barter his time playing video games for a drink . I like to drink and get drunk but not that much. I also think that alcoholism like any other addiction is purely mental.

Sounds like somebody's a crackhead.

You can stop any time you want, chief.

Really.

Edit: Not believing addiction is real is more of a philosophical viewpoint (a self-serving one, naturally); it's like saying the earth is flat or some other thing that you choose to believe, but have put no real effort into actually finding out it whether or not it is true.

It's ironic that people do it to inflate their own egos or lay full blame upon others; like if someone's dad was an addict/alcoholic so magically this person who hates their dad for treating their family like shit doesn't believe in any sort of addiction- do believe that this person they've demonized in their own mind wasn't totally responsible for his actions (or, much worse, was in a disease state) complicates things, and that's really where the objection comes from.

Likewise, people like to point at random homeless people or random other people who abuse substances- David Hasselhoff, Nicole Richie, whoever- and laugh. "Oh, they can't control themselves, haha! That won't happen to me, because I'm a better person than they are." Addiction doesn't exist to those kinds of people, because they don't get to pat themselves on the back. Those people just lack your fortitude, your strength, that's the problem. You've been drunk before, but you don't drink like THAT. You get high, but you're not one of THOSE people.

Don't hurt yourself. You might injure yourself, sucking your own dick like that. Better do some Tae-Bo first.

Consequently, people who have substance-abuse issues do the same thing; I heard a guy who does meth on a regular basis talk shit about people who smoke it. Because "it was never meant to be smoked," he said. THOSE guys have the problem.

....etc.

I voted 'no' despite the fact that on my Father's side, my Grandfather as well as my uncle are always quite drunk off of Ouzo at just about every holiday get-together (yes, Greek family... every Greek family runs on Ouzo and spinach). My Father drinks Ouzo, gin and/or scotch atleast twice a week. Just feel like adding that he smokes pot with me every now and then and does cocaine once in a blue moon. He's also the CEO of an educational software company -- go figure. Lastly, I used to drink excessively but have toned that down a hell of a lot in the past year.

My vote of 'no' is because my family seems to have a great amount of control over substance abuse. We enjoy, we do not abuse.
