So, I was in Suncoast the other day and I noticed that some FUNimation DVDs were going for 3 for 12/5 for 15 and do you know what the shelf was mostly consisting of?

Lupin the 3rd movies.

While it was awesome that I got to pick up 5 Lupin the 3rd movies for $15, it's sad that such a classic series like Lupin gets ignored while utter shit like Naruto, Inu-Yasha, and Bobobo-Bobobobo gets all the attention.

I mean Lupin only lasted for one season on [adult swim], making way for crap like Tom Goes to the Mayor, Squidbillies and Perfect Hair Forever. And why? Probably because the people watching saw the 70s animation and decided they hated it without giving it a chance.

Just like how Original Gundam failed on Toonami because everyone was too busy being on Gundam Wing's nuts. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy GW and own the series, but Zechs Merquise pales in comparison to Char Aznable/Quatro Vagina (or whatever his name in Z Gundam was).

Anyway, rant over. Discuss, if you care.

EDIT: I just now realized why the Lupin DVDs are so cheap. Because FUNimation is discontinuing them in favor of the two movie boxsets. Oh, and Dragon Ball GT belonged on the $3 a DVD rack. You couldn't pay me to watch that shit...

Naruto and Inu-Yasha are cool shows! Bobobo-Bobobobo does suck though, along with whatever other crap CN has been airing lately.

It is a shame Lupin the 3rd got such crappy treatment, i've only seen what CN has aired and i wish the show would've gotten more episodes at a better timeslot. Same goes for Case closed!, another underrated show that deserved better.

Perfect Hair Forever is one of the funniest shows Adult Swim ever aired. It is sad it only ran 6 episodes.

PHF, Sealab 2021 and the first 2 Seasons of ATHF were amazing. Adult swim has really declined IMO.

I am indifferent towards Lupin. I like the show, but not enough to care that it is on a bargain bin. It is better then Bboboobbo and Tom Goes to Mayor for sure though.

The funny thing is that I was all about InuYasha before it started airing on Cartoon Network.

I still own 28 of the 30 volumes of InuYasha, but around the time CN started showing it... for some strange reason, I stopped caring about the manga and the anime. I didn't want to watch the anime because at some points it got further than the manga and I didn't want to be spoiled, yet I stopped caring about the manga around the same time.

I dunno, I mean Rumiko Takahashi, while having her downfalls (Ataru & Lum = Godai & Kyoko = Ranma & Akane = InuYasha & Kagome, for example. I wonder if her personal relationships are like this... if so, no wonder she's not married...), is usually a lot of fun to read. And I'm sure that if I started reading IY again, I might get back into it, but right now: Fuck InuYasha.

Lupin isn't mainstream because it's old animation. The kids like stuff from the here and now. Why do you think Gundam Wing had a lot more success than 0079 Gundam? Because it had better animation even though the show was crap.

Anything from the 70s and 80s era of anime will be looked down upon in this day and age. I'm still amazed and shocked that DBZ was the only old anime to actually be accepted. But then again, mindless action is never a bad thing.

It's a tossup between the two for me. At the end of the day, I just ignore both. I remember having to debate why Gundam Seed will lose your interest within the first 20 episodes and people were like, "But it gets better after the Desert arc!"

BITCH! THAT'S THE FIRST FUCKING TWENTY EPISODES!!!!! Since then, I've told them their show sucks without any sort of justification.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that a GW based username?

It's the only Gundam in the series that actually intrigued me. =/

Plus, to know that they actually said 'Deathscythe' on American TV was just too good. Since then, I adopted the name. Plus, the Gundam names in that show weren't too bad.

Oh, and Deathscythe is a monster hunt in FFXII as well.

The manga and anime are completely different, though. The Akira anime is more streamlined for the audience that never read the manga, so you end up reading two completely different stories in the end.

Oh, and how is Akira not appreciated when that's usually one of the first 5 anime movies ANYONE watches? I do find the movie to be overrated, though. But, that's just me.

for some strange reason, I stopped caring about the manga and the anime. It's like the show forgot the damn point of its own existence. This annoyed me enough to also stop caring about Inuyasha. Nothing was ever happening concerning the search for Naraku or whatever the deal was with those jewel stones/whatever. They go on tangent after tangent after tangent, and you begin to wonder if the writers actually forgot about the main plot points. Kagura and Kagome's hotness isn't enough by itself to maintain my interest. It's depressing actually to think of how disappointing Inuyasha is.

How can one hate on Bobobobo though? I'll admit to being in the minority on Lupin though. A lot of folks here seem to love it. I tried time and time again to give that show a fair chance. It made me smile occasionally. Bobobobobo, on the other hand, that gives me a good laugh within a minute or so of any given episode. In particular, any time Jelly Jiggler is on screen, you can count on something hilarious happening in the next few seconds. In fact, I'm usually already expecting to laugh just when he appears, because the character is just that great.

Welcome to 1979, where anime worked on a tighter budget than anime in the new millenium. So yeah, it's obvious it's gonna look like that. Also, a lot of today's anime wouldn't look as good without it being digitally animated.

I like InuYasha (alot actually), but I've always loved Rumiko's works, so it's a given. You could put UY on a random television and I'd be drawn to it like a kid and be fixated on it until the tv stopped working.

Ataru & Lum = Godai & Kyoko = Ranma & Akane = InuYasha & Kagome

Ataru & Lum and Godai & Yoko are vastly different from one another (and the other two couples), but Ranma & Akane and IY & Kagome are pretty damn similar so I'll give you that.

I loved her work in One Pound Gospel though.

I haven't had much of a chance to watch Lupin, but I loved what I saw.

I'm a big fan of old school. 0079 was fantastic work, and while the visual quality may have been "grainy", it had some beautiful mechanical designs and was a top notch show.

Seed was, ya know, 0079 but "shiny", and I just couldn't justify paying for it all over again.

Akira, when the dust settled, was pretty some lame. I love the bike, love the tank shell bit, can't handle the rest of it, though I've not read the manga. Also, TEDDY BEEEEARS!

Inuyasha pisses me off, though the dude rockin the black-hole in his fist (VORTEX CRACKA!) is pretty raw.

Also, while we're on the subject, DBZ is gangsta. The anime ran far too long, but the manga has no filler and lots of crazy fighting. The movies with budgets are also ridiculously cool. DBZ is the logical conclusion of all anime. Golden Pinecones = Rapture. Deal with it.

Lupin, Big-O, outlaw star, cowboy bebop, tenchi muyo
Good shit right there. Too bad some of those shows never even got past 30 episodes..... Outlaw Star, Big O were way too short. Tenchi Muyo was pretty lengthy with 2 or 3 seasons and a couple movies and OVAs (suprised a Japanese pimp wasn't received in Japan ... that deserves the Naruto filler treatment right there!). The original Lupin was good but I haven't seen one ep of Shin Lupin yet (heard it was over 100 eps). Oh yeah what about Ronin Warriors? I used to watch dubs on CN back in 98 when Toonami was still the shit (and on weekdays ).

First off, I'll give you the fact that the dub fails when it makes references to Shaq, Who Wants to Be A Millionaire, Steve McQueen (the Japanese probably don't even know who he is in 2007, let alone 1977...), but the dub VAs are on point. Hell, one of the big reasons I watch the dub is because of the voices for Lupin and Zenigata. Compared to the FUNi dub where Lupin (which is pronounced Loopin, bleh) is voiced by... Krillin.

Eh, I'll also grudgingly concede that older animes belong on a network with older cartoons. Lupin would stack up better against Scooby-Doo, The Flintstones, & Hong Kong Phooey as opposed to Ghost in the Shell, Naruto, and Bleach.

However, just because it's new doesn't mean it's better. Would you say that Coldplay is better than Jimi Hendrix? Would you say that Maroon 5 is better than the Beatles? Would you say that Alpha 3 is better than Alpha 2? (Well, now wait... I could hear an argument either way on that...)

I would definitely like to see OG Gundam (and Z Gundam because that shit wouldn't make air on CN now) and Lupin make Boomerang. Heck, put Astro Boy, Speed Racer, Robotech and Voltron on that shit and I'll never leave the house...

I agree Lupin, was/is a great show. There is way too much garbage coming out now, whether or not people are gonna defend crap like Naruto and Bleach to their deaths. The animation on these new shows is terrible, and they write the stories so that it keeps on going and going with no point at all. After Dragon Ball, all these shows where they just get stronger and stronger and meet stronger and stronger enemies are getting old. That isn't to say that these can't be entertaining, but at least know what you are watching. It's mindless entertainment and that's it.

I agree that it would be nice if there was a channel for old cartoons (because "anime" is just a cartoon, like anything else, and that's how they treated it back in the 70's) That showed older Japanese stuff as well.

I completely agree with those pics. The lesser the budget, the more you had to work to impress. Thanks to digital animation, you can make crappy designs flow a lot better. And since the quality in animation goes up, the story quality suffers 9 times out of 10. You'll probably get one or two good shows in the latest anime season in Japan.

Anybody that has seen Char's Counterattack would know that CCA looks WAY better than anything in the present. And that's real talk.

I remember when my friend told me the series ended I wanted to flip over some tables and pillage villages. Tenchi Muyo was badass, when did that show that on CN? 2001? Cause I can't remember much of it :looney:, Bleach is pretty good as long as it doesn't go on forever.

^yeah, they finished yuyu a while ago on CN...I always thought tenchi was boring as hell but, to each his own. Bleach isnt as bad as ppl make it seem...episodes 1-63 are top tier.

Yeah, I would have put 0083 up there as well. Katoki Hajime's mechanical designs are just too diesel when animated. Just the attention in detail back in the day made me appreciate old school anime a lot more.

Where did the Japanese go wrong?
I think it has something to do with the next generation of anime and manga creators. technology improves, it becomes easier to make a product faster and cheaper so they get lazy. DAMN KIDS ARE LAZY.

or maybe the previous generations just cared more about quality. its anyones guess.

Yeah, they had this deal when I was in there a few weeks ago. Picked up four Lupin movies and the first volume of Galaxy Railways. I liked the Galaxy Express 999 movies alot, so I definitely wanted to see how the spin-off series was.

Bobobo and Perfect Hair Forever are both very funny to me.

Damn, I was huming the tune to The Man With the Golden Gun since I saw the movie this morning when I remembered this AMV: http://youtube.com/watch?v=13c_aJVwXs4

And this coming from someone who hates AMVs.

And now I come in here. I guess I'm hitting Suncoast soon. :) *changes av*

You're just jealous that you were the only one who didn't have a crush on Tenchi. :arazz:

That was badass! I found a couple Goemon AMV's but they fail compared to that.

Lupin III is always good. The first season > second seson. I mostly stick to the TV specials, OVAs and Movies tho'. Geneon fucked up with the relaease. Only do Season 2 and not even the beginning of Season 2? gtfo. Loved the Hitler scandal, shit was lame.

Off-topic - I thought Akira was lame, sans the animation, but I've come full circle. I can wathc this a ton. Delinquent charcatures(sp?) ftw
