Ninja Warrior is awesome. I am so addicted to that show that I can't help but watch it even if I've seen that Episode already. Heck a few friends of mine are setting up a training course so they can try to compete on the spring Sasuke tournament next year. I might even train with them and try to take a shot at it.

I don't think it's fair to compare the two. American Gladiator is about direct competition, both between the contestants and the contestants vs the gladiators. Ninja Warrior is one person vs. the obstacle course and there's no competition between contestants. Of course the obstacle courses are more challenging in Ninja Warrior because the challenge of the show is can you complete the whole thing, American Gladiator is can you do these obstacle courses better than your opponent/can you do these tasks with a 300 pound gladiator on your back.

As excited as I am about this, the following statement from the article made me pause;

The great thing about the first run of American Gladiators was that it was all action; no extended interviews with boring, mumbling contestants, no emotional backstories, just lots and lots of running, hitting, and swinging.

Now, they want to change a proven formula to further appeal to sexually frustrated 50 year old white trash housewives who married a redneck with a beer belly.

In the process, guys are simply going to get bored waiting for the actual events, all while being bombarded with this emotional bullshit.

The emphasis on the background story is also the same reason the Olympics on NBC were damn near unwatchable; instead of showing the fucking sport, the viewer is treated to a five-minute clip of the tragedy of Third-rate Athlete's pet cat Fluffy dying, followed by poorly-done highlights if the event is over three minutes long.

I mean, if you were watching the football game on Sunday, would you want to be subjected to constant video footage of players talking about their lives and families? No? You say you couldn't give a shit less about them as human beings, and just want to see some fucking football?

It's a shame the American Gladiator producers haven't figured this out.
