Historically, Ken & Donovan were the best because they have the least horrible drop patterns. Well, actually, Akuma nd Devilot have the best, but they dish out reduced damage, hence, Ken & Donovan being the 2 best characters to pick.

Sirlin changed the drop patterns of almost everyone (except KEn & DOnovan). Go to sirlin.net for more info

Acesmith - maybe, i dont really remember, dc happens all the time, sometimes my connection sucks, other times its the other persons connection, whatev.

I just get annoyed when people wont play me cause im beating them. If i got owned by someone, i'd be all "run that back, yo" and i try to get another game with that person. Otherwise, only people i dont play against are people that lag.

Yea it has to be 5 x 5 or 4 x 7+ or 3 x 9+. Try against the first couple opponents & especially against Ken & Sakura since the computer likes to toss red on to your side. They don't attack much so it's easier. If you get too far, reset the game. If you get to COM Dan then this should be a breeze. :) Of course getting to Dan is extremely difficult if he's even in this version.

I'm still working on that 7 chain.

I played against CPU Morrigan and ALL I got were double yellows and double blues. That's it. So I was able to do it and knock her out in the first attack.

What I did was put only 2 colors in the middle (based on the opponent's pattern of course) with everything else to the side. Destroy any unneeded crap the CPU sends you that can mess things up. Then unload a diamond on the one of the colors and everything will just fall down and form one huge gem. Don't even bother trying to build blocks till after the diamond, at which point you'll just need to patch up the holes/make it the right size. That'll just mess up the formation if they fall and don't fit right in with the other blocks.

Also, I'd do it in X mode because the diamond does less damage in that. The computer likes to die cause it sucks. Still needs luck, but it helped.

I'll let somebody else do a full list for this, but here's my impression of the top tier...

Chun/Akuma/Ken/Donovan

Chun: The new damage scaling makes her combos hurt. it matters less that her counter gems aren't the best.

Akuma: best counter gem pattern. hes been highly buffed in that he does 100% damage now. slight con is that he now takes 120% damage.

Ken: Same ol ken. a nice balance between Chun and Akuma in that he has a great counter gem pattern, and that he takes/gives normal damage.

Donovan: Slightly worse counter gem pattern than Ken.

I completed the motherload achievement a few days back. I ended up using Dan, using Ken I was killing off the CPU far too quickly. I had to allow the CPU to send a reasonable sized combo my way before I could build a block that was big enough to unlock the achievement. I found 3x9 the easiest to build most times. Then again, people with previous experience with the game could probably build that twice as quick as me!

Fun games to Edybox if you post here, I had to double my play speed to last those extra 40 seconds against you!

Im enjoying this game, come at a nice time now that I dont play GeoWars, Zuma or Lumines anymore.

I dunno, Ryu seems up there for me, more so than Donovan. when people pick akuma...just pick Chun li 120+120...nice nice nice.

I don't play as much as I should, after oen night I was top 100, but I fell out since then I'm sure.

As for achievements - pick Devilot, she drops 80% - makes it MUCH easier to 'not' kill the computer. Only achievements left for me are the host a 4 player match *always do ranking* and the 5/7 chain. There is a trick with the motherload gem. It doesn't have to be one huge gem. You can chain together 3x3 to a 2x2 to a 6x2, etc.

Anyone else get the gltich where you get justo ne color for a match? I got all double yellows until the piece before the diamond *red bomb/yellow* then a yellow/diamon. Happend other times with blue and green.

I dunno, Ryu seems up there for me, more so than Donovan. I agree with this. Ryu is definitely high up there. I have more trouble fighting him now than the rest of the cast. He's easily higher than Donovan and I think he may even edge out Ken. The reordered colors in Ryu's 3rd row breaks up a lot of his weaknesses that he had in the original. It's tougher to build really tall blocks uninterrupted because of it and a yellow in the columns 3-5 won't take out all of column 4 to protect you anymore because there's always a green after 2 or 3 layers of yellow.

If I had to rank them I'd probably go:

Ryu
Ken
Chun-Li
Donovan/Anita
Akuma
Hsien-Ko/Mei-Ling
Morrigan/Bat Morrigan
Devilot
Sakura
Felicia
Dan

Right on...and yeah, I use Ryu to counter Ken...there are couple of ppl that I've played who try to counter Ryu pretty well, only because they know his pattern very well. Just got to hit Ken hard in the beginning, if you dont succeed with a victory, its still your advantage at times when they try to break small for safety, then its RED RED RED! hehe. What really got me hooked on Ryu is his different SUPERS that they added. Its really just for amusement but his dragonpunch super is sweeeeeet!

Counter-drop wise, Devilot and Akuma r0x0rz your b0x0rz, but the problem is that:

Akuma = he counter drops @ 100% normal drop rate, but takes damage at 120%.
Devilot = Drops at 85% norman, takes 100%.

That's why they aren't God Tier.

I was playing this game against my little brother, he like to use sakura, lei-lei and devilot. goddamn its tough to counter devilot. is it a smarter option to just try and roll with it as opposed to going out of my way to counter her weird diagonal pattern?

A little of both actually...players who use akuma and devilot often break quickly in the beginning just because it gets in their way for building patterns or just to confuse your build. But what its all about is being able to build fast...when the other player breaks small on you, build on that if you seem comfortable with it...if not, then just focus on your own built patterns...if you play slower than the other player, just make sure you have several big gems to break as a counter...and most importantly, just keeping the middle open and build on the sides...its not always about building the gem at convenience spots, you have to worry about defending yourself from the quick big attackers.

p.s. everyone has their own strategy and a style of playing...this is just my point of view. I play differently against different players. GL!

i didnt play much when this game was in arcades but i know for a fact that they didnt have instant drops...
so what i do now is if i see someone not using them i wont use them, and if they do use em then i go all the fuck out.

the instant drop kinda changes the game a bit(maybe alot?)

You're right the instant drop was introduced in the DC version of the game. So the ps1 version doesn't have it either. It does affect the game in quite a big way as well. It allows you to play a whole lot faster and you can get toyour diamond a whole lot quicker as well.

One problem I noticed was there was huuuge lag on many of my games. Why? Is it just me? At first I thought it was because I was downloading XBLA games in the background, but I cancelled all of them and lag was still awful in some matches.. so bad that it was slow just to rotate and drop my own gems.

Jinrai, you have over 2800 wins and I have over 3400 wins yet the guy in 9th is 20-1. If he/she were to avoid all the top weekly players and just beat up on people they could easily be number 1 by the 50th win. The Overall ranking sucks because after about 700 matches it tops out. If you are number 1 or 2 weekly every week then consider yourself one of the best regardless of the ranking.

If the All Time rankings had a 1 point daily decay on rating that would solve the problem with people who have played a few games & left.

I think based on this system, what is significant is your losses & not as much your wins. Your all time ranking growth is tremendous at the beginning & slows down immensely as you rack up your losses. A lot of rating systems are like that since you get the benefit of the doubt when you're new. When you've established capped win/loss ratio as ShadowBlanka pointed out, only people close to your rank are worth any points. People more than 1000+ rating points under you are worth 0. This is where the system fails since there's no incentive to play anyone who's worth 0 points to the top ranked players.

I wonder if it would be possible to reset the rankings and have a variable like games played. Say 100 a week which is 15 games a day. Using the current system everybody would be calculated when they start but once week 2 starts anyone with less than 100 games would not show up on the rankings until they exceeded that. If they did something like this then new players would have to play more. An example would be a new player joining in week 6. They would need 500 games before there ranking shows up. It seems unfair but in the overall it would be good. When they first start they would not be visible and possibly highly ranked. But if you force new players to play more then you keep the rankings close. I hate this ranking system anyways and I see my progress in the game so that is enough for me.

Hm, I don't an Xbox but I played online for the first time at a friends place. Only person who I really had trouble with was Jinrai. I'd like a rematch I'm sure I can beat you =p I'm guessing my low ranking turned you off from it, but it's kinda hard to have a good ranking from playing 1 day when you don't own the system.

Oh god. I bought 2 versions of the same game on 2 systems I don't own. I never thought that would happen.

What really pissed me off was the fact that it took me like 10 tries to get a proper name on XBL. I swear a few times I put random letters. It has to be a bug. Patch Proposal

Xbox360 is dead and can’t play much Puzzle Fighter, so figured I’d rally the community & let’s fix some things up!
Here is a current summary of Patch Proposal I'd like to push for. There is actually a much more detailed list.

1. Fix Friends List
2. You are unable to view the profile of people after the first 8 people on each leaderboard. Basically the top 8 have viewable profiles while any rank 9 & under does not work. When you try to view their profile, your profile pops up instead.
3. Take out the gem pattern that gives all 1 color ie every single pair of gems for both players are all red, yellow, blue or green.
4. Rating should decay.
5. Disconnects in game lobby should not equal lost to any player.
6. Players who are using a free trial Gold account & subscribe after their trial expires are removed from the X’ All Time list. During ranked matches, they are worth 0 points and treated as an unranked player.
7. Fix glitch with Donovan’s character? (Not sure about this one.)
8. A. Under Custom Match or Create a Match, Players should have option to play only people worth at least 1 rating point (or the minimum point value currently in the system > 0) for winning. You will never be matched with someone that is worth 0 points to you.
B. All players under 1000 rating points away but less than 2000 should be worth at least 0.1 point. Players under 2000 rating points should be worth 0.01 point.
9. Player matches should not affect All time rating, Ok to affect win/loss record or Weekly rating. Better if it didn’t affect any stats at all. (Need more info on this. Anyone else played any Player Matches & knows exactly how it’s affected?)
10. Weekly ratings were not reset on Feb 3 last week. First time I’ve seen this glitch.

Most likely for the ranking system, I will suggest for them to switch to Microsoft True Skill ranking system which will solve majority of ranking problems.

Beef up Felicia, Morrigan & Sakura patterns and maybe weaken Akuma. haha
Show rating & ranking of opponent after match.

My friend who is a Software Test Designer at Microsoft says that the Friends List failure in game is actually a certification violation so I'm going to push for that. I don't know if they will patch but I can't play right now so I might as well try. haha My friend also believes that Capcom currently does not have the resources to fix these problems as they're all working on SSF2 HD so we'll see.

Donovan glitch is just his art sprite not coming out correctly. It doesn't affect the gameplay. But I'm not really sure since I read it from someone but didn't really take note of it when it happened.

I play all the time with vgta702 and johnfran but on player matches and not ranked. Ranked is ok but the system that they use to rank players is faulty and doesn't represent an accurate reflection of skill. if you ever see me on it will be in a player match.

Ah man, it was great to finally play you. You have to teach me the idea behind your builds because I am really quite newb to the game and I am relying solely on my puzzle intuition to play the game. All I really do is match colors, I don't really prepare myself for chain breaks or anything like that. It was fun though, finally, I want to get good at the game after all the random I've been playing (who obviously don't compare) it's great to see the best players play it.

On top of that, what is this demonic speed you guys play the game at? The times I lost really bad I didn't even get my diamond yet. :shake: You guys have to let me on the party. =)

someone resurrect jinrai, i havent ran into anyone good in a while. i dont know wtf is wrong with the rankings but when my 360 crapped out on me for the 2nd time i got back on after probably 4 months and all my wins/losses were erased. recently i started playing a lot more and noticed somewhere in the last month or so my wins/losses were reset. wtf i wasnt that upset this time but the first time it happened i was ranked #2 in original and somewhere between 11-15 in x'...fuck stick
