View Full Version : UFGL: Underrated Fighting Game League

*****NOTE: THE UFGL IS NO MORE, DUE TO VARIOUS FACTORS. IGNORE EVERYTHING BELOW THIS POST*****
I've been planning this for about 2 years now, but I didn't have the resources (money) to be able to tackle this on. What this thread is about is trying to form a tournament league for fighting games that could stand toe to toe with some of the tournament games that are being played presently, but just weren't popular enough. I have consistently talked with various players on trying to get an ideal list; the criteria was that the game couldn't be broken, the game play level didn't stall or get boring when reached at a certain point, and that there is a variety of characters to be chosen in the cast of the game (not necessarily balanced, but not a one-character show.) Now, I plan on hosting these tournaments as side tournaments for most of the major tournaments, I don't expect these games to get that many entrants (some of these games are almost 10 years old, if they weren't popular then, they won't be popular now,) but I would like for them to at least get a decent turn out where competition is strong, and not just about a person who practiced a lot and destroyed everyone else who never touched the game; all I'm doing is just trying to give these games the missing credit that they deserve, as well as spawn some diamond in the rough players (players that might not be heard of, but are waiting to burst out of their bubble.)
MAJOR EDIT: I can only host so many games. There were 22 games on the list before, but I won't be able to hold all of them at a tournament. We have to choose from the best of the best ones. Keep in mind that the people that are going to be playing these games are coming from different communities that are already playing fighting games with so much depth, that they won't have a lot of time to be able to play these games, so that is another big reason why I have to cut the list of games short (to 8 games at the most).
Some games will automatically be on the list, here are the games:
Akatsuki BLITZKAMPF
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters (SNES)
Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3
Vampire Savior
There a few ways to decide which games get the last 3 spots to team up with Akatsuki BLITZKampf, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, TMNT: TF, UMK3, and Vampire Savior. One way is see if there is any sort of international scene; as I said in my previous posts, I would like this to expand where not only are we competing amongst ourselves, but the world. Another way is do determine the availability of each game; how hard is it to get it? The 5 games in line don't really have that problem, although DCs are getting more and more harder to find, do to them wearing down easily.
The best way to see who gets in is to let people view (and play/test the game); obviously, opinions will fly about a game sucking due to something that is either meaningless, or not as broke as they think it is... but that is one of the reasons why games like Arcana Heart, Melty Blood, SSBM, and others have succeeded. People tried the games out, they liked them, and now there are scenes with consistent tournaments of people using their hard trained skill against many other opponents. This was probably one of the reasons why games like Budokai 3 didn't really succeed... people can like a game, but is it likable enough to be taken seriously, or how about in the long run? If you ask these questions to games that are still being played all around the world, they will fit that criteria.
I'm going to post some clips of the 5 games that have a chance of getting in 3 will make it (although it might be reduced to 1 or 2 later):
Project Justice: http://www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user=kanewarhead123
Psychic Force 2012: http://www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user=fjt32
Street Fighter EX3: http://www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user=IHX
Touhou IaMP: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=5AC6E0251EA539EF
WeaponLord: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=WeaponLord&search=Search
From the the order of 1 to 5 (1 being the best, 5 being the least), rank what you think of the videos. This won't be the only factor, there are other factors I will tkae into account... I'm just trying to gauge the interest.
Specialty Games (Games to be ran after these games are done)
----------------------------------
Some SNK games (5 at the most, depends on what Dark Geese hosts)
Some games I didn't include, like HF, A3, TTT, the reason why I didn't include them on the list, even though they are some of the best fighting games ever made, is because some of the best players for those games don't even play the game anymore. It is hard (In my opinion) to play a game where it is obvious that the best players don't even play anymore, and because of the lack of competition in the said game isn't there, it is likely that you won't ever reach that level. I do hope that these games get some sort of revival, especially A3, which finally has an arcade perfect port.
If you want to suggest a game that isn't on the list, or you think a game on the list shouldn't be there, then please respond with your reasoning. If you suggest a game that is obviously broken, then I'll read past it, if you suggest a game without any reasoning, then I'll read past it, but if you suggest a game that should be on the list and be detailed about it (stating the pluses and minuses of the game,) then I will take it into huge consideration.
Another thing that will be the main reason I am doing this, is to have a unified power ranking. If you check Dark Geese’s thread (http://forums.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=134703), on the first post, you’ll see a ranking for different kinds of games, and this has so far been proven successful (it’s been one year.) The only place rankings are to be done is in where major tournaments are located at (won’t count local tournaments, not sure about the regional level either.) After each major tournament, we will recalculate the rankings for whatever games were played, and then there will be a new list.
Here are the major tournaments so far (in North America,) if you think there are any majors that I am missing, or you want to add a major, but it is from other country, please suggest it.

About SNK Games, I was going to include SNK games, but Dark Geese is handling that. If Dark Geese doesn’t mind or needs extra hardware to share the load and make the tournaments run faster, I will help host some SNK tournaments (Especially a couple of the games that he hasn’t hosted yet.)
I am going to evaluate how this was handled overall at the end of the “season,” and determine whether to continue this, and if I do continue, where I went wrong… there is nothing really to lose doing this, and many to gain. I plan on posting this in selected websites to get the word out, if you have any website suggestions, then post them up. Also, when there is a tournament, it would be helpful (but not required) that you bring your own hardware (and label it as your own, so you can track it.) It would make things run faster.

UPDATE: I have made a thread about netplay for UFGL games in the online discussion board (the thread here: http://forums.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=144350 ). Although online isn't a great indicator of whose better than who, I believe it is important to start here, so that the games on this list can become more popular and produce better talent and better players at major tournaments. Look at XvSF and Melty Blood, those games have got 40+ players in a tournament... so this is something that can be big for this league.

Tournament Plan: I'm going to get in contact with the tournament organizer well before the tournament starts, to assure that I will be able to host my tournaments. I plan on having the games near the major tournament games are, so people have an easier time to run back and forward to the major games and side games (unless there is a designated BYOC area, which I have no choice but to use that area.) What should be available is at least one TV, some converters, the respective systems to play each game on (as well as a Computer for the doujin games, as well as some of the games that can be emulated, to make resources easier.) There will be a decent-sized marker board near the games being played where I will constantly write down what games are going to be played, when the tournament for a specific game will start (people can have warm-ups to familiarize themselves with the system,) and when the games are being played, what stage the tournament is at (winners finals, rgand finals, etc...)
I will try to get some sort of contact info with the player (but this is going to be hard, so I might have to just run to them, and tell them they are up to play, or yell at them. By the way, I guarantee there will be people who just outright quit, so that will make the tournaments run faster. I will make sure all the hardware is labeled, so that people don't lose their things and blame isn't passed on.
The tournaments are going to be ran as double elimination, 2/3 matches, 3/5 for grand finals (it will be 2/3 grand finals if a certain game takes too long to play.) I will try and be strict (although accommodating) with the tournaments; people are going to be playing at the major tournaments, so I will skip on to the next competitors. I will try to track how long it takes for their game to get done, and if they are standing around after they finished their game while it is their turn up, and they aren't playing a major game at that moment (or already did,) then they will be sent to losers, or be DQed (that's how it will be, if you were in winners, you will be sent to losers, and if you were in losers, you will be DQed.) I will accommodate bathroom breaks and food breaks, but they will be timed... bathroom breaks are 5-10 minutes, and for food breaks, it will be 10-15 minutes, but it is expected that you should have been eating or bought a snack before then. I will tell players when their next match should be up, so they know how much time they have before they play. After the end of the grand finals of each game, I will give about 5-10 minutes to start the next game; as I said before, this time could be used by familiarizing themselves with the game.
Edit: I initially said that if I can't host the games in the major tournament rooms, that I would host them in the hotel; I won't be doing that anymore. If I can't host the games, then I won't host the tournaments in the specific tournament. I'll at least have casuals in the hotel room, but since I want this to become more serious, I won't be able to host the games, if I'm not allowed to hose them at any specific tournament.
I'm going to post up a Q & A about the UFGL, so people have an easier time reading that, rather than a bunch of paragraph text.

I don't think MBAC should be on your list. The game actually has tournies and with decent turnouts, compared to everything on your list, which doesn't.
And also, you should really mark off stuff that people don't have a chance to play. You already have obscure shit, and now you alienate your small audience by trying to play a game on format that's hard to get (arcade). It makes no sense. Word on Tobal 2 and VS though. :bgrin:

I've read reports that this game has too many problems
Sonic the Fighters falls in this list I think. Ha here before Giza.
I've read this one has problems too. I've read Giza's posts about Sonic the Fighters, and one of the main problems with the game is that is has a catch-up system (which is similar to NBA Jam, as in, when you are in a considerable lead, the game actually punishes you and rewards the other player.)

I took Melty Blood off the list, and I agree about some of the games there, it will be very hard to run them if there isn't any boards available (which are expensive,) I will leave them on the list, but they most likely won't get any tournaments going for them, which in this case, is Battle Fantasia, and SC3:AE, which will most likely be done when SC4 comes out.
i'll be at NEC hopefully, i'd love to see tournies go down for all of these.
ESPECIALLY with Monster, I have a bone to pick with some people over that game.
you really should add Big Bang Beat though, the problems people have noted really aren't of
huge significance seeing as how the game hasn't been played at tournament level in the US.

I suggest the original Marvel vs Capcom. The game had a pretty big tourney scene. Now the best
players still play it for fun from time to time and I think they would play it in tourneys. It is huge in online gaming and maybe some online players are hungry and willing to show up to tourneys (we cant judge everyone based on TKimura and Emil). It seems a pretty solid choice, and I think it has the potential to be the best played of all games on that list.
Xmen vs Street Fighter coould be there instead for similar reasons, but this one already have several tourneys going on, I think.
If those games are not underground enough, Marvel Super Heroes could be nice. At the time there were not huge tourney scenes and videos teaching us all over the Internet, so maybe the level of play today can get even bigger.

I think you underestimate the skill of unknowns. All the well known Japanese players abandoned A3 as well, but look at how guys like VER and Mustache and Krasher stepped up.
Ricky, Valle, Wong and them might've been top when the game was at its peak, but I can guarantee there's people out there better than them now. The game's changed a bit since they were at the top of the heap.
It is generally harder to get good at games with little available competition though. Still, that applies to pretty much every game on your list.
You don't have to cover Arcana Heart at the majors or anything, I am pretty sure myself and the rest of the Arcana Heart crew can cover it. We've already got things planned for NEC, which will be the first major where Arcana is covered. :)

I'd only switch out EX2+ for EX3. The load times in that game are gonna be brutal for a tournament.
That and I can't think of many players off hand that play EX2+ that don't play EX3 as well, however most EX3 players won't play EX2+.
The only players that I can think of that'd support Ex2+ in the USA would be Valle (played its arcade release), Afrolegends, and some select members of the empire (Jeron, Justin, Sabin and Sanford... possible a few more). But most of those play EX3 as well, or would if they could.

you really should add Big Bang Beat though, the problems people have noted really aren't of
huge significance seeing as how the game hasn't been played at tournament level in the US.
I added Big Bang Beat on to the list.
Glad to see you doing this Tarkan..we need more leaders stepping up doing shit..it took me a while to gather my resources together too..so it takes time.
Let me know anyway or anything I can do to help!
This certainly gets my stamp of approval!!
Yeah, I really wanted to do this last year, but no one in the whole city would hire me (I only had a temp job that lasted for a month,) but I think it is good that I was able to wait till now, since the "season" has ended. I've learned a lot just by looking at your threads (and still do), I'm seeing what I should do, and what I shouldn't do. I wanted something like this to happen, but it seemed that no one would do something like this, so I had to step in.
As much as I like MvC1, and XvSF, these games have problems: 1. Infinites (relatively easy) 2. MvC2 is better. I think of it like this, why play WW or CE, when you can play HF, or why play NG or 2I, when you can play 3S; granted, that XvSF, and MvC1 don't play like MvC2, but it comes down to what makes people want to go back to XvSF or MvC1, when they can play a superior version. But if this game is suggested and gets a good turn out, I'll probably take it into consideration.
That's true, but let's take an example of say, HF, the game has pretty much been "figured out" by the best players, but the best players don't play anymore (Tomo, Schaeffer, Ngo, etc..) these players played in a time where HF was literally the biggest game in the world, and they played it hours a day. If a new school player stepped in and challenged them, they would get whooped, even if they were really good, although they might win a few (which can be blamed on lack of practice or lost enthusiasm for the game.) ST tells a different story, where you have new school players being able to hang with the old school players, and the Japanese players.
By the way, if there was a tournament that didn't host Alpha 3, and I had time to host some more side tournaments, I wouldn't hesitate to host it, especially if it means having a revival of the game.
It is generally harder to get good at games with little available competition though. Still, that applies to pretty much every game on your list.
I know, I don't expect these games to pull in 100 players, not even 20. These games are being represented, because they are games that are very good, but were never looked at. I know you are a huge fan of Last Blade 2, so you must understand where this is all coming from. Also, the top ranked players for these games are going to come down to "whoever spent time with it more, or whoever can quickly adapt," moreso the former.
You don't have to cover Arcana Heart at the majors or anything, I am pretty sure myself and the rest of the Arcana Heart crew can cover it. We've already got things planned for NEC, which will be the first major where Arcana is covered. :)
I understand that Arcana Heart is going to take off, and that it most likely won't need this topic anymore (like Melty Blood,) but I'll leave it on here just for now.
yo tarkan, while youre thread is a great idea, and i support it 100% i had o remove the youtube links that had SBO content in it. But yah, not trying to fuck up your thread. Can't you use the youtube search links to point to a specific game instead of a specific account?
Sorry about that bro.
No problem, I didn't even look at any of the videos, it was just searching, then skimming, then copying and pasting. I'm going to just post the "youtube search URL" for all the games, so that I don't have to stress myself over trying to find videos, would that work with you?
what about Fighters History if thats possible or is that under SNK?
Yeah, that would fall under SNK, even though it wasn't made by them, but I wouldn't take the game too seriously; the random dizzies really mess up the game, and Karnov is too good (he's even worse than CE Bison.)
Garou is definately underrated, underplayed, and is actually GOOD.
Check out Dark Geese's thread, he's the man for SNK games. If he doesn't host certain SNK games, then I would probably host them.
I'd only switch out EX2+ for EX3. The load times in that game are gonna be brutal for a tournament.
How long are the load times for each game? I've only played the Arcade version for EX2+, but can Arcade EX2+ be emulated without any faults? Also, I know you like EX3 a lot, but that game plays like it's nothing but combos, supers, etc... I might add it in, it's past midnight here, so I'll be able to think clearly in the afternoon.

I would suggest that you replace Senko no Ronde SP with Senko no Ronde Rev.X -- the latter is a much more recent update and is actually playable in the US (that's what the X360 release is).
One other game I would suggest would be Ehrgeiz (or however the fuck it's spelled). Game is severely underrated imo, mainly due to having one of the most complicated and counter-intuitive sets of mechanics I have ever seen in a fighter. However, once you 'get it', the game allows for some truly crazy shit.
I like the idea, and will probably enter a bunch of tournaments at NEC if they go off.

sadly they don't come out to play :(. There was an Ex2+ tournament on Friday at Evo north (before the quals started on saturday) and only 6 people entered (myself included).
And half of it were staffers of the event so they didn't even have to pay. So out of everyone that attended Evo North only 3 people were willing to pay to play Ex2+ in a tournament setting.
though I do agree that Ex2+ did sell more than Ex3, if none of those players come out to the tournament then whats the point?
If you give us enough of a heads up I can get my group from chicago to enter (4-5 people), Tennesse (another 5-6 people), NJ (used to be like 5-6 but now more like 3-4), Cali (8-10), and thats not counting some top name players like Wong and Afrolegends. So thats at least 31 people. and I forgot about BurningFist group of people, and noisetanks group, and obviously like 6-8 members of the empire play as well.
however it being the end of the year my work isn't likely to let me get off for any more tournaments (november to january)

Tarkan,
XvSF is ruined in tournament play by infinites. I'll give you that. But to say MvC2 is a "better" game is not entirely accurate. The games, and the way they are played, are significantly different. The assist factor and tiering is a big part in Marvel. You don't have those factors in XvSF. Every team can beat every team, with the exception of say Storm vs Juggs, Cyke vs Gief, and other apparent one-sided matchups.
XvSF has gained a tremendous resurgence these last few years in the United States and now in Canada. At EVO 2k5 and EVO 2k6, the unofficial tournaments had approximately 25+ entries (which surpasses some tournouts that games like CvS2 and ST get at various majors). I had the super gun at EVO2k7, with XvSF, Alpha 3 and Vampire Savior. All three were on casual play. XvSF showed the most interest, followed closely by Alpha3. Vampire Savior had a few US diehards playing.
I think you should reconsider adding not XvSF, since that game seems to be doing well on it's own and the dastardly infinite factor. BUT consider that Marvel vs Capcom 1 still has a strong and untapped fan base. MvC1 has old schoolers that are still good, ie Sabin and Dasrik, as well as new Kaillera players that have have any real turney venues to see this game at.
That game could be treated like MvC2 little brother. It's relatively easy to learn. Has a lot of the flash and combo-potential like MvC2. And I think could get the fallout of MvC2 players, who might be say eliminated from their matches, or who like playing their favorite MvC2 charsters with six buttons.
I'll tell you that when I had Vampire Savior on freeplay and EVO2k7, a lot of people stopped to check out the game. Unforutunaely many hadn't played before, so I think you having a turney scene for that game could be exactly the kind of kick in the pants that game needs.
All in all, I think you should look at the possbilities with Marvel1 and I also think Vampire Savior is an excellent choice. Cyberbots? Hmm. I loved the game on my Saturn. But in my eyes, it's so much like COTA, I don't know if people can go back to it.
Good luck with this.

I've read this one has problems too. I've read Giza's posts about Sonic the Fighters, and one of the main problems with the game is that is has a catch-up system (which is similar to NBA Jam, as in, when you are in a considerable lead, the game actually punishes you and rewards the other player.)The catch up system doesn't effect too badly but it still causes some problems, but it still cuts down skill advantage. Still I think it can be run in tournaments. But for something like this it makes sense to leave Sonic the Fighters out because of it. It seems the only Sonic the Fighters tournaments this year are probably going to be held (and more than likely won) by me.

As I said before, if you are going to suggest a game, please give a reason for why it should be there, stating the positives and negatives about it. I looked very hard and tried searching for every game and this is the list I got; I know I probably missed some, but this is where you all come in, so try to give some points to why the game should be in.
i love UMK3, but its far from various characters and not being broken. Kabal is god tier in that. There are some rediculous broken combos in that game and a few infinites as well. I still <3 it though.
A good percentage of the cast can win tournaments, Kabal is definitely the best, but he's not unbeatable, and the infinites are rarely ever going to be done in a real match.
I've always read that the gameplay was crap, but since I've read this post, if you can give me more reasons why this game is good, maybe what characters can do, and other positives and negatives about the system, then I'll think about adding it in.
Post by dog-face
You are right about XvSF, there are already decent sized tournaments for it... I wanted to know how the revival started for it, when the game was ditched around 1998. I can do MvC1 if there is enough interest, and about Cyberbots, it does have that COTA feel, they were created in the same year; every match video I see with the game it seems that Warlock runs over the other characters... I'll probably get rid of it, unless someone objects to it with reason.

Bloody Roar Extreme or Bloody Roar 3. The main problem might be the lack of people playing these games at high levels in the states. I don't own either... I play Primal Fury (like extreme with minor differences). It has a bit of a following and matches are rather exciting. They aren't really too old either. I leave out 4 since it was a disappointment.
or
Power Stone 1... its gets quite a bit of love but I know buddy really took it serious. It can be quite intense but its gonna be hard to find players willing to look at it in a serious way. Item placement advantages and high hitting ground combos add quite some strange points to the game. Unfortunately most of the battles will take place in a air to avoid some of these, but you eventually need to land. The whole cast is arguably usable (Rouge being the one that falls short).
and even though I responded to this once I think I am gonna do it again in a different way... since two other people have kinda requested it but havent given details on why
I've read this one has problems too. I've read Giza's posts about Sonic the Fighters, and one of the main problems with the game is that is has a catch-up system (which is similar to NBA Jam, as in, when you are in a considerable lead, the game actually punishes you and rewards the other player.)Alright, it doesn't actually push you and reward the other player for hits. You still get the gain from the hit. It just makes it so the opponent can catch back up easier... recently when testing out on the rom it turns out the catch up system does not retain power during combos... so it just makes catching up easier. Overall the game can still be played on a relatively high competitive level (one of which I still haven't come close to reaching but I suck at learning fighters so...). The game doesn't punish you for getting damaging hits in on the opponent (as long as it doesn't allow the opponent to quick recover and punish you). For this reason I think the game could be considered, unless you already made up your mind on it for sure.

Well I can defend JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. For the most part this game plays like VS combined
with elements of marvel. If you ban petshop (the bird that flys and owns the whole cast 9-1 on
match charts) from the game you have a game were multiple characters can be used. The games
only flaw is that its difficult to learn due to too many one hit frame link combos being in the
game overall though its underated and needs to be played.
- Vampire Hunter is also a very underrated game. The gameplay is solid overall and pretty
balanced as well. The game has no real bullshit shenanigans that keep it from being played
seriously (like dark forces, unblockables that are not already moves, etc). It also has better
music then Vampire Savior. Its just that Vampire Savior is a much better game though match
are fast and furious, rounds end quick (good for tourneys), and it is much more deeper than
Vampire Hunter. That is my case for all three games. Peace Out

yo tarkan, while youre thread is a great idea, and i support it 100% i had o remove the youtube links that had SBO content in it. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about when you see the edit. since it's banned from srk. not trying to be a dick cause i support your thread...100%, and everyone who wants to get them can get them obviously, but cant link to them here. But yah, not trying to fuck up your thread. Can't you use the youtube search links to point to a specific game instead of a specific account?
Sorry about that bro.
Youre the best, nicest mod ever.
though I do agree that Ex2+ did sell more than Ex3, if none of those players come out to the tournament then whats the point?
I think EX3 sold more. Ray Jimenez told Bunkei it was the most lucrative fighter Capcom made in many years or something like it. It as a launch title, so it sold a lot of copies.
Dogface made a great post. MvC1 is great. Infinites are not that much of a factor. The only character that revolves too much around that is Red Venom, and maybe WM to some extent. But even MvC2 has Magneto and IM. The game has rushdown and runaway, really advanced stuff, had a tourney scene at the time, and it can spark some rivalries. Look at ECC 2000 videos on YouTube or even online videos on GodWeapon and see how nice the game looks like. It can get the numbers and, as a plus, maybe it can get the online players out of their houses, which makes for a bigger community overall.

MvC1
Weapon Lord
Gundam Wing: Endless Duel
TMNT:TF (SNES)
SF:EX3
Sonic the Fighters
Newest Bloody Roar (even though I hate the game)
ERGHIEZ! (just kidding)
Vampire Saviors
Cyberbots
UMK3
A lot of these could be cut too. I like what you're doing but you don't want to over-load on games.
Also, Mike Z has a Cyberbots combo exhibition on CV. So, check it out. It's pretty good.
But my main general picks would be
Sonic the Fighters
TMNT:TF
WeaponLord
Gundamn Wing: Endless Duel
Cyberbots (just cause I'm really interested in this game for some reason)
Even though we WANT a scene outside of Kailera for, UMK3, XvSF, MvC1...and others...I doubt it'll happen. Can't really explain why...but I really doubt it would happen.

Newest Bloody Roar (even though I hate the game)I'd advice against that... most of the bloody roar community doesn't like BR4.... 3, PF, or Extreme would all be better choices because people actually play those games.

When you say states, does that mean there was international competition? It's been known that Bloody Roar isn't known for it's depth, which is why I'm skeptical about it.
Yeah, I don't think Power Stone is that serious, fun game, though.

Okay, I think I'll add Jojo, I remember how Petshop was said to be way overpowered, but if he's banned, then I think that justifies Jojo being on the list... by the way, does Jojo have any easy infinites?
About Vampire Hunter, I want to represent the best in the series for each game, even though the gameplay isn't as similar as Vampire Savior, Vampire Savior is regarded as the better game, and I want to have room to do other fighting games as well.

Like Dog-Face said, the best time we can do this would probably be after Marvel ends. If I'm able to finish up on the games (I think these games can run by quickly,) then this should be able to go down.

I've already had this planned; I plan on posting this on as much as 15 websites (from what I count.)

Where is Primal Rage??
As I said before, if you are going to suggest a game, then please give reasons. Anyone can name a game, but explaining why it deserves to be played is another thing.
Here are some games that have a chance at being added to the list, although I've prioritized the games.
1. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
2. Street Fighter EX3
3. Marvel Vs. Capcom
4. Sonic the Fighters
Here are games that are in danger of being taken off the list, unless someone is able to step up to why it should be on there:
Cyberbots: It's feel is too similar to the VS series, and it doesn't seem to do it as good as the VS series. Was made during the year that the VS series kicked off, so that is probably the reason why.
Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai - Another Road: This is considered to be the best of the "Budokai" series, but handheld fighters don't translate well as fighters. This probably has more potential to stay on the list.
Soul Calibur 3: Arcade Edition: This game, unlike Arcade only fighters like Battle Fantasia will probably become obsolete in the next few months, due to SC4 coming out.
When you say states, does that mean there was international competition? It's been known that Bloody Roar isn't known for it's depth, which is why I'm skeptical about it.Some places Mexico has held tournaments for Bloody Roar in the past. I have no idea how good they are. I am not good at this game but it feels like it has depth so far. I don't know though... maybe its retarded at high levels.
Yeah, I don't think Power Stone is that serious, fun game, though.Yeah... *sigh*. There is some unexplored depth to the game but thats probably best settled in online matches... if I can get that to work. It is probably not serious enough. I just thought I would at least give it a shot.
Okay, I think I'll add Jojo, I remember how Petshop was said to be way overpowered, but if he's banned, then I think that justifies Jojo being on the list... by the way, does Jojo have any easy infinites?
JoJo has VERY VERY strict timing on its infinites and loops.
Petshop is soft banned.

Okay, now people are saying that with all these games, that it will be hard to run all of them, which I don't agree with. Now, matches will be double elimination, best of 3 for everything, and Grand Finals will be best of 5 (or shortened to best of 3 if certain games run too long.) I plan on having strict (slightly lenient,) disqualifications, the only excuses will be for bathroom brakes (which you should tell ahead of time, so that we can move on to the next players in line, while you are still qualified) or if you are playing an "official" game at one of the listed majors (which we will also move on to the next players up, while you are still qualified.) I will give about 5 minutes for you to come back to your match after you are done with your official match, or when you should be out of the bathroom.
While this is not likely going to happen (unless I get some help,) we would have more than one television, so that there is less waiting and less time wasted (again, this probably isn't likely to happen, but it's a suggestion.) Since the majors are usually spread out to 2 days (some are even 3 days,) this will give us even more time to finish tournaments, and leave more room for games like SFA3, MvC1, etc; also, looking at the list, some are most likely not to be hosted, due to lack of availability (Battle Fantasia, SC3: Arcade Edition, Shin Budokai,) a couple will be hosted by others (depending on the tournament,) and more importantly, most of these games won't pull that many numbers. I don't see Psychic Force 2012, EX2+ and/or EX3, or Super Dragon Ball Z getting that many players. The most I see would be Arcana Heart (which is probably going to be off the list, since the game is expected to be as popular as games like Melty Blood and Guilty Gear,) I estimate the highest would be about 18. By the way, does anyone know how long it took to finish the SFA2 side tournament at EVO East 2007? I believe there were 25 people in that tournament.
If we aren't able to finish these games in time, then we will probably do some of them at the hotel rooms.

Bleach DS 2 is the only legitimate fighting game for the DS, imo. While most games need space and TV's and such to have tourneys, all you need is 2 (heck, even 1 person) with the game and 2 DS's and you can instantly play. Granted, the game is somewhat unbalanced, but compared to the infinite fest that Bleach DS 1 was, bleach DS 2 fixes a lot of those and has a decent size cast of usable characters. Its overall a lot of fun and really solid as a fighter (assuming its 1v1 and no cards are used).
Rumble fish - Out on JP PS2, its nothing fantastic, but it has its following (heck, JWong even asked me if i played Rumble Fish when i visited New York and saw him at CF in June). Small cast yea, but it has its fun points, and its even being played in tourneys in Japan at places like Ko-Hatsu. The attendance isn't huge, but there's people who play the game hardcore, so it could be a good addition.
Spectral vs Generation - Out on JP PS2 and PSP, this game is pretty fun, fast paced etc. However, the downfall is that its chock full of infinites, but that's part of the fun, is how crazy broke it is. If you play it expecting a really good game, you've got one, up until the infinites. This is for underrated fighters, and there are other people who would join SvG for shits and giggles, its kinda new, so its not completely obscure and hard to get at, but its also not popular and not that good.
In all seriousness tho, the only one i think is deserving to get a spot is Bleach DS 2. Portable fighters FTW...at least in this case.

JUMP! SuperstarsYa know why no one mentions it? The game is broken. I think EX3 sold more. Ray Jimenez told Bunkei it was the most lucrative fighter Capcom made in many years or something like it. It as a launch title, so it sold a lot of copies.
IIRC a few years ago there was a site that had fairly up to date sale charts for the games.
USA SFEX3 I believe sold like 283,000 copies. USA EX2+ sold like 350,000.
However compared to the rest of the capcom fighting releases on the PS2 it spanks just about everyone but CvS2 which sold fairly equally. Marvel sold like 50 - 100,000 less (but most players burned the DC version anyway so -shrugs-).
I posted the numbers in the SFEX3 thread a few years ago but I won't go through it because the point's been made.

Yeah, I've read that the easy infinites and the card system (where people couldn't agree on how to regulate it) were huge problems with the game. It would definitely be compact to hold tournaments for this game, but I'll have to look into it.

I'm afraid that this game is in danger of being off of the list (read the end of the first post, and you'll see why.) If you can, please explain why it should remain on the list; also, I understand that most of these games won't get that much of a turn out, but more people will take notice of these games, and play them for themselves. When they see the ranking system, they will either think "I want to be number one in this game, so I will take up this game," or "That person is number one? I can destroy all those people on the list," both of which will make people want to play these games.
TarkanX: the a2 tourney took more han one evening to finish (started friday eening) because people were in soooo many other different games and had problems finding people. I think it got finished on Saturday
Okay, I understand that getting people to play these games while they are playing other official games are going to be a problem, but with my plan, I believe that we can get all of the available games to be completed, with some time to spare for games like MvC1, and especially SFA3.
the tourney in northbrook is gonna be at nickel city right? Hope it's not too far from O'Fallon
Yeah, the Midwest Championships/EVO North is almost always held at Nickel City. There might be changes next year, depending on what the EVO staff does, but it is likely that things won't change.

man you and i both know i'm trying to come up in that game and i'm not the best at all..... but that last line of your paragraph bothers me because for one, getting games like Monster accepted at tourney level is going to take a lot more action than just listening, or just sitting in a IRC channel knowing you can beat everybody and not coming out to events like this to prove it in a latency free setting where there would be no question that you're damn good at the game, like me and you both know you are. people who are just involved in the tourney crowd, the truth is, they're hungry for new games right now. what i'm proposing is come out to the event, show people who play games like Guilty Gear, Melty Blood and all that, show them what's similar about Monster that would make them want to pick it up. the idea is to get NEW players involved, the more the better. and no matter what you're feelings are about what actual exposition of the game itself is going to be, what counts is the actual level of involvement.
tl;dr: i know i suck at Monster and i play too many fighters to have developed actual mastery, but goddammit if yall don't actually show up for this and make it happen i'll be very disappointed.

Tarkan,
You asked about how we revived XvSF? Well, I moved to Socal in 2003 from Arizona. In AZ we had a handful fo about 12 players who played XvSF. So when I came to CA, that was probably my best game.
I played with a lot of the SoCal Family Fun regulars. In 2003 we had an impromptu team turney at EVO at Calpoly. About 12 people entered. XvSF was definately a cult hit and not a lot of new blood. By 2005, a lot of the original SoCal regulars had vanished.
I started playing A LOT with Family Fun Marvel Player MegamanDS. FFA players would see his crazy Storm, Mags and Cyke and starting watching XvSF when Marvel was busy. Slowly a few people started picking up the game, and by 2005/2006 we averaged about 25-30 entrants at EVO. This year the bubble burst, a lot of the new SoCal payers got tired of playing the same people, the imbalance of infinites, and some just generally outgrew the arcade.
It was an amazing revival. It even lead to a handful of Kaillera and Canadian players having turneys for the game, and players in Australia having turneys.
I think the best way to do something like this with Marvel1, would be too post in Fighting Game discussion, see how many people are interested and announce having some gatherings or turneys. Gatherings are still a great way to gauge intereset before running a turney.
Marvel1 is definately ready for a revival. There's some exciting OG players (Valle, Viscant), youngbloods (let's say Justin and Sabin) and Kaillera heads. For any game, people need a place to play. So another thing would be seeing if the few remaining arcades have this game. I know CTF does. FFA doesn't.
If I was a little more into the SF scene, I would definately run Marvel1 turneys. But after the big XvSF boom we had, I'm done.
Like I said, good luck with this. Keep your list small. Have 5-7 games. Games that most likely, the people that play one, will play the other (ie CPS2 games like MvC1 and Vampire Savior and Jojo). I know those games are drastically different but for the sake of this issue, they're kind of the same family.
Ultimately, games need a fan base. And in order for those games you listed, some which are relatively small and obscure, you have to think about how people can play these games.
Also, the EX games seem to have a few diehards too.

Dog-Face's post
So what you were able to do was basically play, while people watched on got interested? That's great, what I want to do is have people play in the tournaments, while they are able to network with people they know and make them get interested in the games that I have tournaments in. I know the list is a little long, but I believe I can finish all those games with enough time to spare for other special games; but if I don't finish them on time, then I might have to cut some of the games out of the line-up (hopefully it won't come to that.) I don't really expect the obscure games to draw that many players, but it will make for faster run tournaments (and maybe later, draw more people, due to the attention the game is receiving.)
About MvC1: I will try to find a time slot to run this game (probably after MvC2 has ended, or if MvC2 runs too deep into the night to be able to hold tournaments after the game, then I'll do the MvC1 tournament just before the MvC2 tournament.) I also want to slot in SFA3 somewhere, that game really needs the hype it deserves. Sad to hear about the XvSF situation, I remembered about a couple years ago, where every week, there was a tournament result, and it's been a while since I have seen one... maybe Dark Geese's plan with that game can be made into reality.
Does anyone know the consensus on these games? Can you explain them in detail if you do?

Monster is clearly the most underrated game. Look on the last page, there is already arguments about it. Just a few more people and some death threats, and it can be mvc2 all over again. HYPE.
P.S. I'm better than everyone at Monster (except that I haven't played since about...April). The end.

if you're talking about DOA3.1 it would be best to get ahold of Tom Brady, Perfect Legend, Swoozie, Dahlsim or Sorwah of DOACentral. Those are the names who will get you the numbers and the hype you would need to get entrants in that game. ( actually it wouldn't hurt to get ahold of PMS Clan either, having girls at your fighting game event seems to always spark some form of controversy for some reason or other  )
It's kind of funny to note, but I was going over the numbers the other day and just underneath 500,000 people play DOA4 online EVERY DAY. of course this will obviously pale in comparison to the number of people you could get interested in an event that had an older DOA game, but yeah, 3.1 was probably the best revision ( in 3.2 i think Bass had really screwed up infinites with 6PK and ground tech infinites on a lot of stages between walls - the cave one I remember Sorwah showing me at Otakon once )
Naruto GNT4 is pretty balanced for what it is and definitely moreso than EX for Wii, a lot of people tend to ban CS2 Sasuke and OTK Naruto but for tourney specifics you'd have to ask The Will / Willvolution staff since they've been running the game for years now. I think HeartNana from this site plays it as well, maybe he can elaborate?
Primal Rage: The game was very fun and was far from broken. Though it lacked many characters it had a wide variety of good techniques. It featured overheads for every character to combat turtling. The game has fun and interesting combos (featuring cancels, juggles, air combos, and more) and no infinites. The characters were somewhat balanced and it definitely didn't lead to a one character show. The game does not slow down at higher levels (from what I have seen and understand of the engine). It definitely deserves to be on this list.

Talon, Blizzard and Vertigo owned Primal Rage
Everyone else was garbage.

Last I checked Vertigo was bottom... and Blizzard wasn't high up there either.

The problem with DOA, from what I understand, is that the players that play online don't even attempt to play offline. I believe Perfect Legend posts here, so I can tell him about the situation (although I think he hates the game and prefers DOA4.) Do you have any idea on how the offline DOA scene has improved? It was pretty abysmal at EVO World 2006, where 64 people showed up and 25-50% were first time players, playing for the money.
I added Primal Rage and Dead or Alive 3.1 to games that I'm greatly considering. Expect Primal Rage to be on the list, maybe tomorrow.
Nevermind. I still want it to have a chance. I just need to build hype.

man you and i both know i'm trying to come up in that game and i'm not the best at all..... but that last line of your paragraph bothers me because for one, getting games like Monster accepted at tourney level is going to take a lot more action than just listening, or just sitting in a IRC channel knowing you can beat everybody and not coming out to events like this to prove it in a latency free setting where there would be no question that you're damn good at the game, like me and you both know you are. people who are just involved in the tourney crowd, the truth is, they're hungry for new games right now. what i'm proposing is come out to the event, show people who play games like Guilty Gear, Melty Blood and all that, show them what's similar about Monster that would make them want to pick it up. the idea is to get NEW players involved, the more the better. and no matter what you're feelings are about what actual exposition of the game itself is going to be, what counts is the actual level of involvement.
tl;dr: i know i suck at Monster and i play too many fighters to have developed actual mastery, but goddammit if yall don't actually show up for this and make it happen i'll be very disappointed.
You know what, I am sick and tired of you talking about me not supporting monster. I have done EVERYTHING for monster. I brought players in, I talked to the japanese players, I wrote blog entrys, I talked to the creator and got information, I annoyed bellreisa to allow me to make a wiki for monster and i did the majority of the wiki work when it was made(contributions were made by alot of others however) If not for xenozip and myself. There wouldnt be a game worth considering because we put forth the same effort as bellreisa did with iamp. So dont talk to me about coming out and supporting the scene when that is ALL I DO when it comes to monster.
What did you ever do chibita? Who did you ever bring in? Who did you ever get to come to the room and play monster? When did YOU support the monster scene. All i even remember you doing was showing up for 2 weeks or so and playing it and then leaving. Because your sorry ass couldnt play the game properly, You didnt take the time to learn it and constantly gave up on it. I know i get pissed off with iamp but i also take the time to step my shit up. You have done nothing of the sort for monster. I cant remember one single time where you brought someone in to the chat room. I dont remember you bringing in any combos, Any informations and any replays of people playing monster. I dont remember you doing anything for the game other then bitching and complaining. So you tell me, Who isnt supporting the scene here. Me or you? I think we know the answer. Step your shit up.

I think HeartNana from this site plays it as well, maybe he can elaborate? The only banned characters are the dog, and there's some contraversy about the puppet, but i think he was made legal recently since Sakon/Ukon is legal and a way better character anyways. Balanced tho? Nah, its about marvel level if marvel was 1v1. OTK, Kisame, Itachi, Temari = Storm, Sent, Cable, Mags pretty much while Tayuya, Sakura, Anko = Dan, Servbot, and Roll
Yeah, GNT4 kinda has its own site and community and stuff, so its not that i'm not advocating tournies for it, but there's actually a decent amount of tournies going on for it already. If the league is supposed to be able games that DONT get played in tournies, then GNT4 shouldn't be on there. Gamejunkie in Ohio has majors for it every 4 months plus the one major in florida a year in addition to smaller tournies that each respective community runs. Its died down a bit recently, but its a somewhat niche crowd, so i doubt it'd be worth it for some of them to go to NEC for a side GNT4 tourney, you know what i mean?
By the same token, MB and Arcana shouldn't be on that list either...

Random question. When did you start playing Monster? Because I don't remember you from back when I played.
EDIT: Oh. Ok. You did a name change for some reason. I was about to go off on you for taking credit for other people's work. But, I guess I can't now. Ghey.

what in the ever loving HELL
in no way shape form or fashion have I EVER said you did NOT support Monster
if anything you were the main reason people started playing. you were the one talking to ShoK PERSONALLY.
see, the problem we have here is a failure to communicate. how in the FUCK is me saying that you should come to an OFFLINE TOURNAMENT the same thing as saying you DON'T support the game?
seriously, WHERE are you getting that notion from? help me fucking understand.
you know for a fact i was there for more than two weeks. i ran brackets for two of the ranbats, i got people offline to try the game, i went to numerous anime conventions with it, i had burningfist / tobemorecrazy posting the vids EVERYWHERE and showing all the local heads the vids, i gave shouts out on the blog- hell, i spent an hour debating with gwyrgyn blood saying he should try the game out when he was in fact the main detractor for a while ( he still doesn't like it, but i've accepted that ). YOU, for one, were saying you didn't like him because all the area guilty gear players "followed him like they didn't have a mind of your own", i believe was the terminology you used. what kind of shit is that dude? i know you tried to get Dustloop heads into it, but i talked to them in PERSON about it.
but i'm not saying this because i'm trying to compare track records because that's unfair, and i believe you're being unfair by trying to bring that up. i'm not trying to have some kind of spotty ass argument here, and i don't know why you are.
what i'm essentially saying is, all you have to do is show up and you basically win for free.
look man: i don't know where you get off attacking me like this, i've tried to use newchallenger.net to push Monster, I WAS THE FIRST ONE TO POST THE OFFICIAL 8105graphics trailer on Youtube, i've gotten people to see it who might not have otherwise considered it. i contributed Siely stuff for the wiki because i honestly love playing that character, even now when you all tiered her as shit ( next to Aleksander of course ).
as far as getting the crowd to accept this game: fact of the matter is, you're trying to push a product onto an audience. and it doesn't matter what product you're talking about, if you don't have a damn good reason for someone to try it, they're not gonna be interested. have you talked to ShoK about pushing the product for XBL? PSN? console?
nobody is saying you don't support Monster, come off that shit because wherever you're getting that idea that's bullshit, people understand you've sacrificed time you didn't have to for that game. if you want recognition or whatever, then what i'm saying is we can all do better to push the games we wanna play in tournaments like the ones Tarkan has on that schedule, in a competitive setting. that's all. please, let's not shit up this thread with random ass hate, because that's the last fucking thing we need in here.
and as for you spootz, and you xenozip, both you motherfuckers, if you really think you're on aya's level because i'm sure he's got shit he has NOT shown you, then please set aside time for NEC.
and that's all i gotta say.

well what that MEANT was that the players i mentioned were good at the game, and should actually SHOW UP FOR the damn game. don't get it twisted; nobody's pseudo-"confirming" anything, all i'm saying is what TarkanX has here can only get more people into the game. what the fuck happened to trying to build hype for an event?
and see that's another thing, why you gotta go and say some shit like that about Harem? he may not be the best but he's trying to come up, and at the very least HE stated he'd BE at NEC. saying shit like that about newer players or lesser skilled players DOES NOT make new players want to play the game when they see how newer entries into a community get treated like shit, homie. have YOU actually freed up the time to come out? if you don't try and make time to show the tourney crowd how the game can be played at its limits then the game's still gonna be in the dark, simple as that. put up or shut up is all it is.
Look familiar chibita? I think it does. Its funny cause i did what you couldnt do offline, While i was online, I got people interested in the game and playing it. You sat and debated with ONE person about getting into the game and ultimately he didnt do that. All nonsense asside. Ive taken enough time to do ALOT of shit for this game. As for people being on my level. Xenozip and Fooligar were the only 2 people who came close to me. Rogueyoshi did too but he stopped playing due to personal issues. Rogue is still a heavy supporter of monster and will be at NEC for it. Spootz was ok but had delga carrying him for the longest time. When delga got owned. Spootz ditched him to play maya. And then that failed and he stopped altogether.(Don't get mad at me, Thats how shit happened) Everyone is waiting for the new patch, Thats understandable. As for what i have talked to shok about. That is none of your business. Ive talked to Shok about so much and if you were sooooo into monster as you say you are. You would be in IRC ALOT more because Shok actually JOINED our IRC channel for a few days. The main heads who support monster are always in IRC and where are you chibita? hmmm....
Do not give me that "personal issue shit" because we all have personal issues. Seperating video games from personal issues is something everyone does. Unless somehow video games are a part of your cost of living.
What i am telling you is. If you want to support the scene. ACTUALLY SUPPORT IT. Dont just talk about shit. Make shit happen. I dont have any beef with you, I just have a problem with how you decided to come on here and make yourself look like a complete moron making stupid statements about shit you know nothing about.

Nah there isn't. The big combos involves alot of super bars, kind of how MvC2 is.
