View Full Version : New York Digital Life Show 2007, September 27-30
http://www.digitallife.com/newyork/flash.html
This is New York's very own mini E3 event. Not all of the gaming companies come out but some do. It's about 1/2 gaming and 1/2 new technology coming out, like I dunno washing machines that can turn into spaceships and all sorts of crazy gadgets lol!
Last year Gametap came through and held a few small Street Fighter II, Alpha 3 and Pocket Fighter tournaments, so we'll see if they do something like that again.
Like every year, just trying to find out who's going and stuff. If you want to meet up at the show just toss me a PM.
I'll be using this thread to talk about what I see and do at the show and it will all end up with lots and lots of pictures!
So if you are in the New York area or are planning to be, come on down and play lots of games.
DAY 1
Man, what happened? There are A LOT less games this year. So far no Sega, no Square-Enix and no Nintendo! No Gametap so by extension no SF or Capcom games! A lot fewer screens and the only systems that were playable aside from PC games were the 360 and the PS3, no PSP no DS and no Wii! What's going on universe, just 'cuz E3 became a much smaller event doesn't mean you have to take it out on us on the East Coast! This is like the first Digital Life Show four years ago, less of a gaming show and more of a technology show - without the free alcohol they were serving year one ah man! :annoy:
Well it is the first day, guess I'll see if more games do pop up...
Anyway, the big guns were there of course. Halo 3 and Heavenly Sword. First time playing Halo 3, the graphics have improved a lot and the AI is a lot smarter than last time around. I have Heavenly Sword at home so I didn't play it at the show but I helped out others who did. Dang, the version they have at the show is super easy. For those who've played HS, remember the part where you have to make a shield hit 2 gongs to open a door prior to fighting Silver Fox? At the show you only had to hit one gong! And Whiptail only sends waves at you one time and after that you can slice her up to death! Man they are having it easy lol!
For fighting Tekken 5 was there but each PS3 only had 1 controller what the hell no competitive playing! I played some of that with Jin and got up to Devil Kazuya who owned me pretty good lol! Someone beat the game, knocking out what looked like an omega strong Satanish Heihachi.
There were quit a few gun games like Resistance Fall of Man, Gears of War on the PC which actually plays quite well and a few others. There was also Oblivion and some other games I am forgetting. Some lady had a jacket on with a kiddy racing game on her chest, gave me a controller and I played the game on her jacket. Video game clothes, what will they think of next? :looney:
Oh yeah, there was a screen that showed a bunch of Upcoming PC games so I saw Spider-Man Friend or Foe there, I was hoping I would get to play that since Activision usually comes through. And they did show Lost Planet on that screen so that, me wearing my Mega Man T-Shirt and spotting someone with an SF2 shirt are just about the only Capcom related things I have to talk about today.
When I was about to exit the show there were a few military guys who wanted me to play a Virtual Army game. So for that you have to walk just about to back of the convention center and go up a level. They wanted a lot of information and wanted to know if you served or am planning to serve in the army, crap I was scared I was registering for war by mistake! They gave me a fake I.D. and they let me play the Virtual Army game. Pretty much the same thing that happens whenever I play an online FPS, wound up getting shot in the back of the head a lot of the time lol! So after a bit I walked out. Later on I encountered another Virual Army guy who told me that I wasn't supposed to leave before turning in a wallet that had a sensor of sorts in it and recieving a demo of the game. They had no idea how I sneaked away from them since you are not supposed to. Hell yeah, I got ninja skills I can sneak right out from the Army's nose. Go ahead and draft me I'm going AWOL!
Namco was there with the same Pac-Man booth they had last year and a Ms. Pac-Man machine you could play for free. They had cell phone versions of games too. I played Ms. Pac-Man on the cell phone and a lady told me there was a competition, if I told her my score when I finished I could qualify. Anyway, my final score was about 10,000 and she told me that was too low, the lowest score they had was 20,000. WHAT??? IT'S A CELL PHONE YOU KNOW HOW HARD THAT IS??? Eh this is what I get for hardly ever playing Super Pac-Man on my phone and playing too much SF2, Mega Man II and the cell phone version of Lost Plantet. :looney:
As for the non gaming stuff, IRobot had a presentation of all the robots they are comming out with. So they have a better vacuum cleaner robot that can go over oriental rugs without messing them up, a robot that can vacuum the garage and pick up sawdust and nails, a robot that can clean your gutters and a robot that works like a web cam. Basically it looks like one of those vacuum cleaner robots but you turn it on with a notepad / PC from far away. With it you can talk to people and see what they are doing and follow them around. Examples they laid out were people on a plane using the robot to read their children bedtime stories at home, or even playing Monopoly WTF? Man technology is getting scary it won't be too long before Dr. Wily starts causing trouble.
Toshiba was playing Deal or no Deal with laptops. If your number was called you were chosen to pick from one of 15 or so briefcases. Two of them had laptops, the rest had other stuff that was a lot cheaper. Prior to opening the briefcase they would make you an offer, open the briefcase or except a handheld DVD player, a new Ipod and so on. No one won a laptop and a lot of people took the gadgets that were offered to them! Ah talk about pressure... Seemed fun though and people walked away with good stuff.
Guess that's it, now on to day 2.

I dunno how, but my father got a free 1GB usb drive from there, and a bunch of other useless free things.
I myself will probably not be going.
I printed up free tickets for me and some friends.
Can't make it today. I have to work early on Saturday if there is time I'll go. Definitely going on Sunday.

Sounds dissapointing. I'm supposed to go Saturday with a couple of friends.
was there anything for UT3??? any playable demo???
I have no idea what UT3 is.... Only '3' I'm aware of is Halo. Seriously, a lot less games this year...
DAY 2
I got complicated on wearing my Street Fighter II shirt today, there you go some Capcom news!
Today was a little bit better in that they brung out some Nintendo Wiis! Only game they had was Wii Sports, but it was cool since I have never played a Nintendo Wii before, none of my friends have one. They had a Wii last year but the crowd to play it was crazy, today it wasn't so bad. Wii Sports was one of those games I always told myself that if I get a Wii I'd try to find a pakage without that game and with Zelda ha ha but I was suprised how much I enjoyed playing it! Got some Wii Tennis and Wii Bowling in oh yeah fun!
Konami did show up today. Sadly all they had was their Dance Dance Revolution machines. Ah man I wanted to try out the Castlevania PSP game waaah....
Not much more gaming for me though. I played some Dig Dug and a Snoopy game on cell phones in the Namco booth. I got at the Ms. Pac-Man machine but they only give you one life ah man, made it up to the third board and called it quits.
They did add a second controller to one of the PS3s that had Tekken 5 thank goodness! But not to all 3 though. As you can imagine the crowd to play on that one Tekken machine was kind of crazy so I didn't bother. At the very least there was some competitive play available. Forgot to mention this but yesterday some people were playing Dead or Alive together sitting on a couch, there are a few places like that at the show but they change the games regularly, didn't see DOA return today but I may have just missed it.
A panel discussion I attended today was called "TV 2.0" and it was all about how things like Youtube are replacing the TV watching experience. Well not so much replacing but there is another venue for your time of course. The question I asked the panel went something like, "NBC has been doing a lot of interesting things lately like airing Heroes only once and instead of giving reruns they put the show online. And the aired only about 4 episodes of The Black Donnellys and put the rest of the series online. With things like this along with Tivo and On Demand, aren't they helping to change the way things are, in that you had to be at your house at a certain time to watch a television show? And if more people are watching shows online, do you think they will ever invent a system like the Neilson Ratings to see how many people are watching these shows that way?" The answers I got was basically it's a mess and they haven't found out how to track/rate how shows are doing online. They said with Black Donnellys it was a good thing that they put it online because the show wasn't going to develop a fanbase anyway at that point. With Heroes I was reminded that they did rerun the entire series during the Summer but no one watched it because they saw the episodes online. So I suppose there's more experimentation that needs to be done... Big up to Black Donnellys I loved that show...
After that not much. Entered a lot of contests so I may win a Digital Camera, a Notepad and a whole lot of bottles of liquor! Well they will E-Mail me if I win and if I don't I'm sure all of these people will be spamming me somethin' fierce! I was walking around the Microsoft booth and some lady rep took my picture. Then with her PC she combined my picture with a bunch of other pictures, did some funny things like give my photo wavy effects and so on. At this point I ate one Hot Dog and drank some ludicrously overpiced beer because so this was probably more interesting than it sounded. I was all like "Whoa... look at the colors...." On the plus side this was all while wearing my SF2 T-Shirt and the panel viewing my picture was a bunch of old people. So if you see a bunch of 60 year olds in the arcade you know who to thank.
Might not post anything tomorrow because I have to go to a party after I attend Digital Life, yeah I have to be an adult for a little while lol! Sunday I'll go back depending on if I'm not super hungover or super tired. Most def will post Sunday though to tell you how everything went.
I'm taking a lot of pictures but even those don't seem as interesting as ones I've taken in previous years. So chances are I'll keep the pictures in this thread since they are not 'new thread worthy' yet. I mean seriously booth babes have been replaced by sort of not ugly women who know what they are talking about and are not showing you any skin what the... Booth babes can't work in Digital Life or E3 what the heck! I'm donating to some booth babe charity... :looney:
Ah, by you UT3 did you mean Unreal Tournament? That was there, didn't have the number 3 though. Still not exactly sure you what that is though, some PC FPS type of tournament? I dunno...
DAY 3 AND 4
Not a heck of a lot to talk about sadly. Saturday I had some Tekken matches and lost ha ha! On Sunday they removed the two joysticks from that one PS3 machine so it was back to all Tekken 5 games having one joystick just like day one. Some games I played were Ghost Recon, some underwater gun game on a 3D moniter and they even gave you 3D glasses, Pac-Man Pinball on a cell phone, Resistance, Lord of the Rings online game and that's kind of it. In the Lord of the Rings game one girl was controlling a chicken throughout the entire game, have to admit that was kind of funny ha ha! On Sunday I did get to play Halo 3 for a good half hour since it was much less crowded so there was that.
On Saturday I wore another SF2 shirt and got complimented on it, some kid just outside the con asked me who I use in the game. I pointed to the character on my shirt which was Ryu and said that he's my favorite character but I use Chun-Li more. He responded by saying "Chun-Li hax!" Um, was that a good thing or a bad thing? :looney: Soon after he put his entire body in one of those red boxes they have out in the street where you can get free publications like the Village Voice or New York Press, um, yeah gotta love generation Z... Sunday I wore my shirt of Pac-Man ghosts that I bought from the Namco booth last year, and naturally I recieved compliments from people from the Namco booth this year.
The craziest thing was Saturday when me and my friend were leaving, someone took a dump on the floor! Yep, #2! And there was a curved trail from where the person would of been walking, like a skid mark! Now, I hope it was a dog poop but it didn't look like dog poop and it was a little too much for someone to of just scrapped that off of their sneaker, me thinks someone had an accident... Me and my friend had lots of fun comparing this incident to the entire show but I'm sure you can use your imagination.
Seriously, this has to be the worst Digital Life Show they've ever had. Still I showed up, tried to have as much fun as I possibly could and made the best of it. I have no idea why a lot of the game companies that were supposed to show up either didn't arrive or came out with very limited exposure. Was it because of E3 shrinking and the companies being forced to hold their own events? Was TGS a little too close to Digital Life this year? Don't know, can't say.
Still, with all of that if they would of dedicated a few panel discussions to gaming that would of helped a lot, last year there was one which was really good.
Every year at Digital Life there was always something for me to enjoy. The first year they brung down Guilty Gear for the Xbox and they held a Guilty Gear Isuka tournament, and there was free liquor! The second year Peter Moore came down and unveiled us the 360. SNKP was there with their fighting games and gave me a gigantic KOF poster that I still have on my wall. And last year was just the best ever. They unveiled the PS3 and Gametap had tons of old school games on top of holding SF2, SFA2 and Pocket Fighter tournies. I also got 2 Final Fantasy posters and a huge Justice League Heroes poster! This year was nothing like that. The only saving graces were Halo 3, Tekken 5, Heavenly Sword and for myself being able to play with a Wii for the first time but it was nothing like previous years sadly. I mean there was no DS or PSP games at all unlike prior years. A heck of a lot less gaming. :arazz:
On the other hand, if I do happen to win one of the many contests I entered and I win a laptop, digital camera and 5 bottles of liquor (yeah there's a contest for liquor) I could change my opinion very quickly. Yes, I can be brought.
Ah well, I'll put up the pictures I took soon but there wasn't even really much to take pictures off....
On the bright side there is still the Anime / Manga convention coming in December, by default that's gonna be great due to people dressing up.

poor Sano... I know you're always looking forward to this show.
My brother won the guitar hero tourney they were having yesterday... Little fucker has been playing GH2 and GHRT80s for 3 months straight. He won one of those gaming chairs.
But yeah this year sounds really disappointing. Any booth babes at least?
But yeah this year sounds really disappointing. Any booth babes at least?
Yeah I really don't mess around too much with Guitar Hero, Dance Dance Revolution or FPS games, if that's what you went for I'm sure you'd be happy.
Booth babes? Not really. Some women fell between hot and kinda hot but most of them were there to inform you about technology and so on and not to take pictures. And they revealed no skin at all, not even tight wearing outfits. There was one girl who cosplayed as Lara Croft on day one and at the end of Sunday only for some strange reason.... Well at least she was pretty.
On the plus side, Sven of Capcom USA said his wife went to the show. Yay, a wife of a Capcom Employee attended! Eeeeh, I'm desperate I'll take it... His post is below, since I very lazily copy and paste all of my posts here onto that board you can really just overlook anything I say over there.

Yep, this year was doo doo. I played some GH3 and 2, and pretty much lost every contest I entered. Some other people I was with got stuff, one won an Ooma.
But I did manage to get one (http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w295/Klizza/Stuff/02faafab.jpg) good thing out of it. I didn't bother to take video this year and I had my camcorder with me.
It's a shame to see how people fiend over free stuff. I saw one lady get hurt as people were jumping for stuff and I was told she also got smacked in the face somewhere else.
We got one of the women from the GGL area to come play cards with us and we gave out cheepo flashlights in the Ooma section on Sun. There was a boxful left and that went in like 3 mins. It's nice to throw stuff at people and have them be grateful for it.
Nice meeting DMC! Working on my pictures now, they should be up later today or tomorrow.
I forgot to mention, someone broke an HD TV screen using the Wii Mote! If you've ever seen a cracked one, you can see a wide range of rainbow colors. Oh and since the game was still running (we saw the TV after the fact) pressing the Home Button changed all of the rainbow colors on the screen for whatever reason. Oh snap Mario Paint on the Wii.
Here are the pictures I took.
Pics of the screens the 360, PS3 and Wii games ran on.

Some stuff around the show. Konami's Dance Dance Revolution banner. You know, whenever I hear Dance Dance Revolution I think of that song that ran after the second episode of SNK's Gowkaiser anime, "DREAM AND REVOLUTION!" I suppose five people know what I'm talking about. :wgrin:

Bumped for morning peeps lol! And I'm out. Here's hoping next year's show will be better. :wonder:
