what do you guys know about the faiths of the many popular superheroes out there?

I dug deep into something interesting according to this weird website (http://www.adherents.com/lit/comics/comic_book_religion.html)

Here is a list of some of the higher tier heroes
Superman Methodist
Spider-Man Protestant
Batman Episcopalian/Catholic
Wonder Woman Greco-Roman Classical Religion
Aquaman Greco-Roman Classical Religion
The Hulk Catholic
Captain America Protestant
Invisible Woman Episcopalian
Nightcrawler Catholic
Shadowcat Jewish
Daredevil Catholic
Hawkman Egyptian classical religion
The Thing Jewish
The Atom Jewish
Zatanna Dianic Wiccan
Elektra Greek Orthodox

Batman is an Atheist, he has said so. Many characters have commented on how interesting they find the choice, considering he fights ALONGSIDE, and AGAINST Gods, Demons, and Angels.

that list is SPECULATIVE at best.

Superman, for example, was created by two JEWS, to be the ideal Jewish messiah character.

Furthermore, I don't think religious threads are allowed HERE, anymore than they are allowed in General.

It's fun. And there are some characters whose religion is an important part of who they are, like Nightcrawler and Matt Murdock , so it's germane.

Pre-Crisis Kryptonians revered their sun, and Supes was no different.

I understand where you are going but the difference here it isnt a war debate of whose religion is better. I just wanted to post something that I found was strange while going through the net.

Arg, another judgement call... The thread is fine so long as this doesn't go the way of this religion is better than yours or evolution, buddhism, shintoism is the truth and so on. So long as it remains talking about comic book characters its all good.

fair enough.

There's debate that the Power Pack is Mormon, despite no concrete evidence.

Nightwing is a Contempoary Christian of some denomination, or at least has an interest in it, as he owns a NIV Bible, and listens to a lot of Christian Rock.

I think the only reason Nightwing owned a Bible and DC Talk albums was because Chuck Dixon and Scott McDaniel are Christians and they probably thought it'd be funny to toss those details in the backgrounds. But I don't know. Who knows what Nightwing really believes?

I always assumed Superman worshiped Rao. Back in the day, when Superman got upset and felt the need to unleash a choice religious epithet, he'd be all, "Great Rao!" and "By Rao!" and so on. Likewise, Perry White worshiped Great Caesar's Ghost. I think it's also possible they both worshiped Cyclops at some point, because sometimes they say, "Great Scott!"

King Peacock from Top Ten is Yezidi. It's some sort of ancient religion that involves devil worship, or something that nonbelievers think is devil worship.

Peregrine from Top Ten is a Protestant Christian.

Conan the Barbarian worships Crom.

I read an interview with Chuck Dixon where he said the reason they tossed those in, was because it kinda makes sense.

I kinda agree.

Jesse Custer: Uhm....that's a tough call.

- Magneto is most likely Jewish but may be a Gypsy.
- Wolverine is an Atheist but has been a Buddhist and a Protestant in the past.
- Ra's al Ghul is the leader of the Assassins (who where an actual Medieval Islamic death cult wiped out by the Mongols. In the DC universe, the Assassins are just Ra's al Ghul's goons that carry out his agenda)
- Cable is a member of some future religion that I forgot the name of.
- Apocalypse believes in transhumanism and social Darwinism.
- Alfred is Episcopalian/Anglican
- Ogami Itto is a devout Zen Buddhist.

I don't think that was Batman. I think that's Mr. Terrific you're talking about. They even devoted issues to his atheism

Nah Batman believes in himself. Just ask Frank Miller.

ROBIN: So Batman are you going to contempory christian church with me?
BATMAN: I am not going to no Goddamn church! I'M THE GODDAMN BATMAN!
ROBIN: Holy Athiest Batman! You see, this is why I'm going to grow up to become the Joker in Dark Knight Strikes Again....
BATMAN: Shut your Goddamn pie hole I'm the Goddamn Batman! Now bend over and take it like a man you lookin' good in those shorts... Wait a second is that Goddamn Devin Grayson writing this Goddamn line? WHERE'S THAT GODDAMN FRANK MILLER? I'M THE GODDAMN BATMAN! :looney:

Anyway religion isn't a major issue with Batman. Unlike Mr. Terrific.

Jeezus, the more I research that site, the more I see people seem to think I'm some kind of authority on the religion of comic characters.

in Bart Allen's entry, there's a discussion I posted at allspark.com (Under the moniker "Alvatron!")

it would seem I debate this topic more than I realized!

ever since the infinite crisis i was wondering about the religion thing for the characters. But the site I posted was just out of luck while I was researching for the black comic characters thread. I guess the point is that each hero was probably a certain faith where one day the writer would just say oh he's jewish.

That one Jim Starlin limited series, Infinity Crusade, "revealed" a bunch of different characters' religious beliefs as well. You may want to check that out for more info on Marvel characters.

negative. i can't believe i'm trying to correct you, but i remember (not sure what issue, but i can check on monday at work) him claiming to be an athiest because of his wife dieing in a car crash, by a drunk driver i believe. reason being was that up until that point him and his wife attended some type of mass every sunday.

after she died he basically renounced god and the only way for him to even consider going back to his church/faith was if he could just see his wife smile one more time for him. harro foreshadowing. of course later on in the book something happened (he got knocked out/near death experience/something) and he saw her smile at him one more time.

in conclusion, dude went back to church.

edit: i forgot, his unborn child died w/his wife, too.
edit2: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mister_Terrific_%28Michael_Holt%29 under religious beliefs... looks like you were right afterall sano. that's what i get, huh. lol. oh well.

looking back on it though, that's pretty much some ol bullshit for him to SEE his dead wife and prior to death unborn son yet still act like he doesn't believe in some kind of afterlife.

that doesnt mean he's not athesist just cause your born to a religion or go to a certain church doesn't mean your like christian for the rest of your life. he's athesist because he chose to change his affiliation.

you missed my entire point. he switched from whatever he was to his current athiest status due to the fact that his wife and unborn child were killed in some kind of car accident.

all he wanted to do was to see his wife smile one more time and next thing you know, he's in the spirit zone looking at his wife and son (that was killed before she even gave birth to him).

if you would have read anything i typed or the link i provided your post wouldn't exist.

In the Infinity Crusade, the Goddess rounded up a bunch of marvel heroes who had strong religious beliefs to fight for her cause. Everyone else that didn't have strong religious beliefs were left on Earth. I'll have to dig up the issue again. I don't remember much other then the fact that most of the higher-tiered characters in terms of Intelligence rating (I.E, Reed, Tony, Beast, Hulk, Prof X,) were left on Earth.

Sorry to "Rez" this thread, but the list offends me. Where the hell is Nightcrawler? He's a damn priest for christ's sake! I wouldn't think some people on this list to be the most religious (Or entertaining) to stick in here (Like Puck...god what a shitty idea).

On the Mr. Terrific topic, it was Infinite Crises during the death of some crap heroes, he was discussing the topic of religion with Ragman who is Jewish.

Blue Devil is Catholic I believe, and attended the mass funerals, despite the fact that stepping into a church physically burns his skin.

Ah, Nightcrawler was with Excalibur when all of the Infinity stuff was going down. Alan Davis Excalibur. The book untouched by omega crossovers. Gotta love that book.

Yeah he wasn't a priest back then either, that came YEARS later. Having premarital sex, getting drunk at bars was quite the norm.

Honestly most of the religous stuff flows from the 90s cartoon, where they made him omega religous as an act to not scare the kiddies away. At least that's where I can trace it. Cockrum's Kurt Wagner was never that religous. He could get through a sentence without mentioning God you know.

He should still be up there, maybe even rank the top spot. Though yeah, Excalibur in England - Forgotten in most of the 90s.
