Well, you have your Japanese Ryu/Makoto = Shoto. Your Chinese Chun Li = Girly Kung fu. Your Hugo = Grappler. Your 12/Q = oddness. So when you get to the 'African' Americans, you get boxing and capoiera. What else would one expect? Breakdancing? Drive by shooting? American Idoling? Of course you can always go the 'student' route and get someone of color doing something that you wouldn't normally associate with a black person...Black Belt Jones would be a cool character :)

Dunno about that, man... Hugo = Andre the Giant. Sure, he was really tall, but not a "freak", if you ask me. Jus' a big dude. Also; I don't see Urien as "oddly tall", nor strange. If I spent a year going to the gym, I'd bear a close resemblance (if I cut my hair). The thing about Urien and Hugo's height becomes immidiately apparent when you take into account of Ryu, the "traditional, muscular, Karate guy". He's Japanese, so if he's about average Japanese height then Urien and Hugo's heights make perfect sense. I"m only 6'2 but in Japan I felt like a giant. I had to duck to get into the trains and I came close to hitting my head on many things... not to mention, on a packed train, I felt really strange/comedic surrounded by citizens with thier faces in my chest and lower back (packed trains are packed!).

I wouldn't mind seeing a new Black character in SF IV. In fact, I support it whole heartedly. I just don't want for him to be a:

Boxer, Entertainer/Musician, Athlete (and you know what I mean), or Comic Relief.

Elena and Dudley to me were a step in the right direction. Even though they still adhered to stereotypes. In truth SF is full of stereotypes and though that doesn't stop me from enjoying it they are no less visible to me.

Don't believe me? I'll illustrate:

Ryu - A stock japanese hero, initially intended to be a badass, ended up following the Miyamoto Musashi/ Mas Oyama (a modern day korean born Musashi) archetype. Quiet, humble, devoted, and focused in his mission to attain the ultimate understanding of martial arts.

Ken - American and Japanese blonde of hair and blue of eye. Heir to an enormous fortune gained through hotel chains. He is impulsive and arrogant but fierce in his determination to someday be #1. The All American.


Thing is I don't begrudge them that. I just want a Black character I can stand behind. Sean was cool but he was still just comic relief and a fill in for Sakura. Elena is also pretty awesome but for me she's more fun to look at than play with. I want a Black character who's as virtuous as Ryu and as fiery as Ken. I want a real martial artist. The biggest challenge right now for Capcom is for them to create new iconic characters, just like how the original SF2 cast were. Thats the main focus capcom should be thinking about if they wanted to revive SF.
Its going to be difficult considering this day and age, where everything has ben done, and stereotypes get looked down upon. So i dont think capcom could try and pull that stereotype bull that worked for them before.

or on another note, im pretty satisfied with the cast as it is. for the sake of the franchise, i dont think it would be cool to add more new characters to the SF universe. Ingrid just did'nt "fit" into SF in my opinion, and i dont want to see what else Capcom has up thier sleeve for the cast.

Capcom should just focus on developing existing characters who were neglected before, because they were alot of them.

Well... you have to look at it from a perspective of the average Japanese consumer. I don't know why they think all black dudes are Mike Tyson or Dennis Rodman, or Blade (Wesley Snipes).

That being said, I think it goes without saying that the main characters of these games tend to be at least partly Japanese, because they want the home team to identify with them.

As long as he's not a boxer, rapper, "free style" fighter, or uses a sport to fight... then where's all good imo.

SF has always, and will always have characters that are stereotypes. It's not a matter of racism, but an easily recognizable fighter archetype. The black boxer happens to be a recognizable American fighter, as is a black capoeira fighter. Karate and sumo wrestling happen to be recognizable fighter archetypes as well. Maybe when they have a bamboozled negro who throws watermelons and fried chicken at you and gets thrown in jail when he loses you can call the race card, but we're not quite there yet.
