View Full Version : SF4 Voice Acting

SF characters have always been extremely vocal. Yelling out names of the special moves that they're doing and such. What kind of voice acting would you want for the new game? Do you want more realistic voice-acting like in the Tekken series, where characters actually speak the language that they would speak from the country they reside from? Or do you want everyone to speak Japanese with some Engrish? Heck, even Virtua Fighter retains the painfully-bad campy voice acting, believing it to be a part of the game's charm.

3rd Strike had the right idea with the voices. But you can't deny the awesomeness of some good engrish. Terry Bogard is a prime example.

If they could get the same voices from Street Fighter III, that would be awesome.

And keep the voices to the character's respective languages [for example, Alex speaks English, Makoto speaks Japanese, etc].

It'd be nice to hear them talk during matches/story mode/etc. :wonder:

Don't particularly care for Engrish, but if it needs to be done, then by all means continue the 'tradition' for that character [nothing comes to mind at the moment for Street Fighter Engrish...?]

Let's start lining up ideas for announcer voices.

For me, the number one choice is obviously Harry Caray, the greatest sports announcer who ever lived.

No Micheal Clark Duncan.

But they'll probably stuff him in there somewhere...as Hugo. :wasted:  :NO!:

And thanks for the Engrish reminder. Gotta have "Sonicu Buu!" and Ryu's choir Fireball!

peak the language that they would speak from the country they reside from?

No, because the english actors they get are always horrible. Listening to Lion or El Blaze in Virtua Fighter makes me want to gouge my ears out. I know it adds camp value, but still.

... and Remy speaks french...?

I always wondered why while most of them do speak their language, some just don't.
Well, I never cared anyway. Just really loved SFIII:3 voices.
go for some "Sonicu Buu!"

Sasmasta

I dunno what Remy is saying when he talks. :wasted:

I hope Makoto mouths off alot. That'd be awesome.

Super arrogant and bully-ish. :dream:

She seems like the type to want to fight more though and is never satisfied when she wins [her win screen says something among the line of "That can't be your best! Stop holding back!" or something like that]. She can be that tough cookie, yet has a soft side at moments when she reminisces about her father...

I dunno. That'd be pretty sweet [in my opinion]. I like chicks that kick ass yet have SOME kind of soft spot [no, that was not a SEX related joke].

i don't mind the fact that the vast majority of street fighter characters speak japanese.

but, sometimes, the characters really should speak their own language. example: cvs2, yun and chun li have a special opening. COME ON. THEY JUST HAVE TO SPEAK CHINESE.

Yes, yes he does:

Да! (Yes! spoken: 'Da!')
Хорошо! (Good! spoken: 'Horosho!')
Большой победа! (Big victory! spoken: 'Bolshoi pobyeda!') (though I'm not so sure this is correct russian)

If they're gonna make people speak their native language, they better do a good job with it and not just say one or two phrases from their languages (i.e. Dhalsim says "Yoga" and "Namaste"..and only those two words. One of his win quotes is "Yogayogayogayogayoga.")

CPS1 voices I liked, CPS2 voices were tiny, CVS voices were engrish OMG, SF3NG and SF3SI started to get good, SF3TS got it right.

Street Fighter III 3rd Strike got it right. Alex finally sounded like a New Yorker, Dudley sound like Brit and that was cool and awesome. Ken, Ryu, Chun-Li and Akuma's voices in Third Strike where also top notch.

I did not like the engrish of ALpha and CVS, especially for the new Guile stuff. He only sounded good in CPS1

No, because the english actors they get are always horrible. Listening to Lion or El Blaze in Virtua Fighter makes me want to gouge my ears out. I know it adds camp value, but still.

That's because most American VAs seem to be only aware of two English accents, and they can't do those well.

Honestly? I'd like to see both.

Have the characters call out the names of their special moves, including the Engrish phrases like "Sonic Buu!," during the actual gameplay. I mean, you gotta have that stuff in a Street Fighter game. Doing Ryu and Ken's special moves just wouldn't be the same without hearing "SHORYUKEN!" or "TATSUMAKISENPUUKYAKU!" as they do them.

Have the characters talk realistically (and in their own language, maybe with the option to add subtitles) for their win quotes instead of having lame text flashing across the screen. SF4 is coming out in 2008 or later on highly advanced video game consoles, so there's almost no reason to still be using text for dialogue at this point.

i think it would be great if they actually got talented voice actors from each country that the actual in game characters are from and have them do the voices.

whatever they do, stay the hell away from reality, this is a game not a simulation. call out your moves damnit!

p.s. we all like to make fun of the engrish in the Japanese games, but lets not forget tha American voice actors not even being able to say any of their lines in japanese and having to make shit up instead.

Bedfast Emperor
11-17-2007, 03:37 PM
They should just make the game entirely in Spanish with voice actors from soap operas

I say that every character speaks his own language for winning quotes, taunts, etc, but just keep the hadoukens and shoryukens original please. I don't mind if ervy non-japanese language is not well spoken, we just want to know they're speaking chinese, russian, english, etc.

I also want 2 almost imposible things:
-the original guile voice, super sf2 guile was a total ***! and alpha/cvs guile is not that bad but he doesn't sound as tough as the original one.
-keep the original sf2 throwing grunt for someone (zangief would be the best), that was golden and can't be lost! "HOO-oh"

The poll is funny but what I think the thread maker might keep in mind is that a lot
of the sounds that came out the way they did was due to the abilities, or lack there
of, of the hardware back then. I think they sounded good still, but dang when I'm
playing an emulator (which would be worse IMO) games like Altered Beast, Golden
Axe....whoa, horrible! LoL
