Does anybody have any links or tips on how and when to apply the clear coat to a painted box,

I built a sexy black box and followed the case mod tutorial and ended up with a nice flawless shine but now the finish is sensitive (worse than a black iPod) it cant be touched without being scratched, lord forbid it rubs up against anything harder than a t-shirt.
so I tried building another box this time instead of wet sanding after the final base coat I tried to apply some clear coat but the paint wrinkles the instant it touches the surface, Im assuming it's because the base isn't sanded when I applied the clear:sweat:

edit: pics of extreme wrinkling arrrgh!

let it dry some more before you put the clear coat on

You will also need to sand the base coat so the clear coat has something to grab on to. A 220 grit will be sufficient. Don't worry about the scratches you are putting into the base coat they will not be seen once the clear coat has been applied. You will also want to sand between layers of the clear coat so they stick to each other.

^^my main problem was somewhere along the line, I got it in my head that I couldn't sand the the final layer of base color, which caused all kinds of problems. after sanding the clear is sticking like a champ now. I think It may also have something to do with the brand of paint I was using. I upgraded to Minwax Clear Gloss Polyurethane to see if theres a difference.

so far with the minwax there's no wrinkling going on, I sprayed one coat on today and I'll wait till after work tomorrow to sand and spray another layer of clear coat

that happened to me when i sprayed a different kind of paint over the primer layer. i think it was Acrylic on lacquer primer? something like that. but it was a stupid mistake.
