I usually use an adjustable pliers to hold the stick in place and screw off/on the ball...

It works really good, but it leaves permanent marks on the stick!

Any safer solutions?
What does everyone uses?

Are we talkin' Sanwa & Seimitsu joysticks?

If so, they have a slot in the bottom of the shaft. Most people hold the ball top in one hand and tighten that slot using a flat head screwdriver.

Works....

For all Japanese/Japanese-styled sticks or any other stick that uses ball tops.

Shaft eh?.. never checked that out or knew about that.
I'll open it right now and see if I noticed the mentioned place.

As for those scratches you just put on your joystick shaft, if you want you can fix that too.

Here's how:

Go buy sandpaper, or find it, whatever.
You need 120 grit, 220, 320, 400 and as high as you can get or steel wool.

Take the stick apart, all the way. Chuck the shaft into a drill press or a drill. Chuck in the bottom most portion of the shaft, that wont be seen when you’re finished.

Hold the coarsest sandpaper in your left hand kinda curved and spin the shaft in the drill with your right hand. Repeat this process moving to finer and finer steel wool or sand paper and to whatever sheen you are happy with.

I traded with someone once and they sent me an old rusty Seimitsu with scratches all over the stick. This is how I fixed it.

only the most legendary arcade ever. exists in heaven now

you can also use just put some material on the end of your pliars when you grip the shaft. that way you dont have to open up the stick everytime the balll comes loose.
