Security of LAN

What are the security mechanism (materials and software) that I can put in place to secure my LAN (a server on Windows 2000 adv. Server and 10 stations under Windows 2000 pro) connected to Internet?

And what way can I detect an intrusion....how can I identify the intrusion?
