I will posit that the world is not actually getting worse, per se, but that it's just that we more easily see how shitty things actually are. But, then, the availability of new technologies can make more heinous acts possible today that no one in prior decades would have even dreamt. So who knows.

I do know that I don't like or respect more than half of the premium members these days, though.

I will posit that the world is not actually getting worse, per se, but that it's just that we more easily see how shitty things actually are. But, then, the availability of new technologies can make more heinous acts possible today that no one in prior decades would have even dreamt. So who knows.

I used to think like that a few years ago, especially when I hit that point in life when I wasn't a kid anymore, and people didn't go out of their way to kind of keep shit from me, but now I truly believe the world just gets worse as time goes by. It seems like people just don't have any morals these days. I mean, there's always been the bad apples, but now it's like, the majority. At least that's how it seems to me. Like what I mentioned about the media.....the kind of music you couldn't buy back in the day if you were a kid is basically played on the radio now. Small example I know, but it's surprising just how many weak-minded people there are out there, especially young ones, who allow something even as petty as music to have an influence how they carry themselves in life. Same goes for stuff on basic cable. There's a number of shows I wouldn't want my kids watching if I had any. I don't even wanna get started on girls. When I was a teenager there were still a few good girls here and there. Now I'm convinced that every female on the planet is a whore. It's just a matter of time before you find out, and that's just from observation. No personal bad experience is fueling that.

I agree, where I grew up if a kid tried to listen to that music or if a girl was to dress or act like a whore then they would get beaten with bamboo sticks until they learned their lesson. Actually, they would probably learn their lesson way before the beating ends.

EDIT: I can't believe this didn't come to mind, but when you consider state of race relations in America a couple generations ago, I think that trumps any "degradation" you might see in TV/music.

More and more young adults rush into relationships(or even worse marriage) with someone they "love". Most of them never take a look at what their situation is and ask themselves "Do I really want to be with this person in 5 years? 10 years? Forever?" My parents have been married for over 25 years; and although they fight from time to time, their love is stronger than ever. All the while my cousin gets married two years ago to a woman he REFUSES TO TALK TO NOW.

Of course it was all there before, but music and TV are ways of reaching everyone with whatever influences they may carry with them. Even to those who otherwise may not have any exposure to that sort of lifestyle. The fact that negative shit is glamorized and easily accessible makes it that much more common for kids and hell, even stupid adults to make role models out of complete idiots & criminals. Most people aren't born violent or with a criminal mentality. It's life experience and surroundings which lead one into those kinds of situations and state of mind. Bad influences in the media simply add fuel to the fire for those already living around it by making it seem ok, or by making a hero out of a fucking loser. You think most rap music isn't responsible for 99.9% of the wanna-be gangsta wiggers in white suburbia? Come on, man. Get a clue. ^ crap :bluu:. this was EXACTLY what i was about to post, though Zor has some good points. it seems now that people in our "modern society" have a hard time taking responsibility for their own actions- which leads to this sort of overwhelming apathy towards everything. i guess logically, if the end result to an action is the "buck getting passed," fighting becomes futile. look at politics; look at media. almost everyone says many aspects of these things suck shit, but don't try to change them because "you can't change them- it is what it is- blah blah blah." the world is so fucking emo right now; but hopefully things will get better.

Haha, yeah. Although I listen to pretty much anything except country, my two favorite genres are rap and classical/opera. Two completely opposite ends of the musical spectrum :rofl:. Top it off with the fact that I wear typical southern college attire (flip flops in the summer, lots of khaki shorts, t-shirts of any kind, jeans, some polos, button-ups, and anything cheap and comfortable heh), and I don't really fit in anywhere! :sad:

If you really want to figure out if things are getting worst you can't just look at things with a local mindset. Yes there was slavery in the u.s... but is that even comparable to worldly problems such as poverty? Last I heard, 20% of the world owns about 80% of the wealth, and that 80% will just keep increasing.
Gang violence is hardly the issue. Almost any local problem with in a first world nation is the issue.
